Dark Harvest
Dark Harvest | Norman Partridge
Winner of the Bram Stoker Award and named one of the 100 Best Novels of 2006 by Publishers Weekly, Dark Harvest by Norman Patridge is a powerhouse thrill-ride with all the resonance of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery." Halloween, 1963. They call him the October Boy, or Ol' Hacksaw Face, or Sawtooth Jack. Whatever the name, everybody in this small Midwestern town knows who he is. How he rises from the cornfields every Halloween, a butcher knife in his hand, and makes his way toward town, where gangs of teenage boys eagerly await their chance to confront the legendary nightmare. Both the hunter and the hunted, the October Boy is the prize in an annual rite of life and death. Pete McCormick knows that killing the October Boy is his one chance to escape a dead-end future in this one-horse town. He's willing to risk everything, including his life, to be a winner for once. But before the night is over, Pete will look into the saw-toothed face of horror--and discover the terrifying true secret of the October Boy . . . "This is contemporary American writing at its finest."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Dark Harvest

KateReadsYA Would you describe dark harvest as scary? I want to read it this fall and I'm hoping it'll be super creepy. 2mo
TieDyeDude @katereadsYA It is definitely creepy. I might not this year, but I want to read it again. It has a great style to the writing and the voice, while not falling into the pithole of style-over-substance. There are some ambiguous/unexplained aspects, but it's a cool read. 2mo

Dark Harvest had all the right vibes but you have to suspend your belief for this one. The author never really explains what‘s happening. And that‘s where I got lost. I want to know why this pumpkin walks around. If the Harvest Guild controls the town with dark magic say that. Spill that spooky gossip. That‘s what I crave. Don‘t just build something up and then just end it. That takes half of the fun away.I would have definitely liked more depth.

TEArificbooks In the movie it explains that if they don‘t hunt the pumpkin monster down a huge dust storm comes and destroys their fields for 9 years. But they have healthy abundant crops if they are successful. (edited) 13mo
AVChrista I just watched the movie and it was fine, worth watching once. It also doesn‘t get into the why, it just happens. Reminds me of Shirley Jackson‘s “The Lottery”. 13mo

A spooky novel where each autumn, all of the young men in a small Midwest town take part in a ritual to hunt a giant pumpkin-headed creature that arises from the corn. The winner gets to leave the town and his family given monetary prizes. But something very dark is behind this tradition…..this sounds like a perfect read for next year‘s Scarathlon. #scarathlonphotochallenge #autumn #blackcatcrew

We just watched the film adaptation of the book, and I really enjoyed it! It's been about 10 years since I read the novel, so it wasn't fresh in my memory. There seems to be a plot hole in the movie, and some of the details are a bit different from the book, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the film. #horror #film #horrorfilm #horrormovie #Halloween #Halloweenmovie #scarathlon #booktomovie

Pretty good adaptation. I can see myself revisiting both the book and the movie, but maybe not so close together next time. Some things that are spelled out in the book are only vaguely implied in the movie, so some scenes might not make a lot of sense, and some of the changes from the book are questionable, but overall it works well.

This book was just cool! 😎 I'm not sure how he pulled it off. The phrases and imagery were excellent. The majority of it is narrative third-person, but the narrator switches to second person at times, telling a story while conversing with the reader, and it works so well. Lots of unanswered questions at the end, but that rarely ever bothers me (what did bother me was the handful of painful typos in this $40 special edition the library had 🤷)

Book 157 📚 3.5 ⭐

This book STINKS of atmospheric Halloween! In the best way of course.

You feel like you are right there, on the hunt... for him...🎃

If you want to feel the tingle old horror movies used to give you as a kid, this is the book for you.

And apparently it‘s being made into a movie! Which after listening to this, could be SO good.

On Halloween night every year teenage boys of the town have to face a monster with a pumpkin for a head. It‘s a short book (just under 200 pgs), and super fun, and apparently will be a movie. 👍👍

This was such a good, quick listen, perfect for the holiday season! Something truly horrifying happens in this small town every year - a pumpkin-headed creature comes out to cause havoc and the “lucky” boy who kills it gets the future of his dreams. But nothing is what it seems and even more sinister things are actually happening. Great full cast of narrators. Only downside was the somewhat unsatisfying ending. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 #scarathlon #teamslaughter

This was a good, tense novella about a small Midwestern town which holds a hunt for the mythological October Boy each Halloween. If this was even shorter, such as 45 minutes or so for the audiobook, I think I would have enjoyed it more…but the author has a somewhat excessive style that was almost hilarious with how many dead horses he was beating at times. Overall this still makes for a fun action-packed book on a cool fall night! 3.5/5

Ya know how sometimes a book gives you exactly what you want when you see the cover? Yes, Dark Harvest did that for me. Originally published in 2006, this book has been on my TBR for years because of how much the cover makes me think Evil Wizard of Oz Story. If you didn‘t know, Jack Pumpkinhead shows up in the second book and the second movie of the Wizard Of Oz stories. His pumpkin head sits on top of his stick boy, and has magical life.

LibrarianRyan When I see the cover for Dark Harvest my mind says Jack Pumpkinhead is burning and I have to know what is going on. This cover designer did an amazing job.

No on to the story. It‘s Halloween night (sing if you must), and The RUN is about to commence. It‘s 1963, and for decades Old Boy (sometimes called Ol‘ Hacksaw, or Sawtooh Jack) arises from his cornfields, armed and ready for murder.

Pete McCormick has been held as a type of hostage for
2y
LibrarianRyan for the last 5 days. While provided water, he was otherwise starved. Many of the kids in town suffered this same fate. On Halloween night they are released and the hunt or the run begins. One of these boys, aged 16-18, will be the winner. Defeat the October Boy and a life out of the small corn town is possible. Your family will be taken care of: given new cars, homes, money. What ever is needed. But the spoils only go to the victor. 2y
LibrarianRyan October Boy has some trick up his sleeve as well. Ol‘ Hacksaw drops Bit O‘Honey candy those starving boys love. But he is not just a rabbit to be chased. The October Boy is also a killer, after all it is a kill or be killed world.

This book is full of all the things that make a horror novel a frightful read. There is blood, there is gore, there is abuse and assault. It is all in there. I do not think it‘s extremely graphic but to some it
2y
See All 7 Comments
LibrarianRyan it may be. But it is done in such a poetic way. Once started the reader needs to see the run to the finish line.

I enjoyed this book. It could become a staple of Halloween, and the prospect of the movie that is out in September 2023, just adds to the anticipation. This story would work amazingly in film, and I can‘t wait to see if the film is as compelling as the novel. The run has started, do you think you could beat the October Boy?
2y
Reggie The part where he goes back to his old house and has all those memories with his family…😭. I really liked this book. 2y

This was a fun Halloween read. Every year a pumpkin scarecrow comes alive and has to make it to the center of town without the male youth killing it or it killing the youth. Had a strong vibe of Jackson‘s The Lottery, but with a more violent, supernatural, Halloween spin. Decent enough, but nothing special.

This was okay. A quick horror read full of unlikeable characters, a fast moving plot and a writing style that tried to be poetic? I think? But didn‘t quite make it. The most interesting thing in this was the October Boy but aside from that it felt like a typical small town horror storyline just set on Halloween. Overall, I was reminded of “The Lottery“ and The Hunger Games. A weird blend of the two, yet effective in its examination of conformity and apathy, especially in small town cultures. Or, one could read it simply as a fast-paced, somewhat gory #Halloween tale about kids paying for the sins of their fathers... depending on how you interpret the reasons for the ritual.
