I kind of fell of the bandwagon with posting on this one. Things have been a little crazy!!!

In the end, this book was just okay for me. There were parts that were interesting, but there was also way too much wandering around aimlessly - I never was sure what the actual point of this story was. Plus, I didn't particularly warm to David, who seemed conceited and not overly bright haha Some of the adventures were fun, but I didn't enjoy this ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) as much as I have some of Stevenson's other stories. I also felt like I was missing a lot of background since even my Wiki-crash course on the Jacobean revolution didn't help me much 😂

Thanks for reading along with me!!! Today I started The Robe (great first chapter!!) and am hoping to post about it every weekend, about five chapters/week. May's #RandomClassic will be East of Eden!!
8mo
BarkingMadRead I gave it a meh as well. It was so random and then wrapped up so neatly 🙄 8mo

Lcsmcat I found this one fell flat for me too. It‘s an “I‘m glad I read it so I can check it off my list, but I won‘t be revisiting it” choice for me. Thanks for being the impetus for me to read this. 8mo
Lcsmcat @BarkingMadRead In a way it wrapped up neatly, but I also found the ending to be lacking some details. I wasn‘t sure just what happened there at the very end. Did RLS write himself into a corner where, having made the reader admire this outlaw, he couldn‘t do the Victorian thing and have receive his “just deserts” but he also couldn‘t let him be celebrated? It felt very awkward to me. 8mo
julieclair I got so far behind on this one that I kind of gave up. But I do want to finish it at some point, so I can check it off my list as @Lcsmcat says. 8mo
TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @Lcsmcat @julieclair - I had also found the ending to be both too tidy but strangely abrupt. What kind of final sentence to a book is “The hand of Providence brought me in my drifting to the very doors of the British Linen Company's bank.“ !?!?!?! Apparently, there is a sequel to Kidnapped that begins as soon as this book ends. If, like myself, you don't care enough to read about David for entire other book, there is a summary ⬇ 8mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) on Wiki. It sounds like more of the same, except with 💖 💕 💘ROMANCE 💘 💕 💖 😂

8mo
Lcsmcat @TheAromaofBooks I think I‘ll pass on the sequel, even in summary. Thanks for taking one for the team. 😂 8mo

(thru ch21) - I don't know why, but this book just isn't really holding my interest much. There doesn't seem to really be a plot?? Just wandering around from place to place haha And the chapter where David was “stranded“ on the island because he was too dumb to check and see if he could cross when the tide was out... 😑

It's not a terrible read, but I find myself rather ambivalent towards it. What do you all think?

Lcsmcat I‘m with you. I think David is supposed to be about 12, right? But he‘s either precocious (the battle) or ridiculously naive (the island.) I wonder if this needs to be read when you‘re a pre-adolescent boy/tomboy to be appreciated fully? 8mo
BarkingMadRead It‘s it so amazing that I want to keep reading and it‘s not so bad that I want to throw it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 8mo

(thru ch 13) Sorry I have kind of fallen off the face of the earth with this readalong!! Okay, so I literally had to do some research on the Jacobites and that whole deal. Stevenson has a much higher opinion of my historical knowledge than I deserve 😂

While this story is perfectly fine, I'm not in love with it or anything. But I can definitely see it appealing to its target audience with gold! Danger! Shipwrecks! Sword fights!

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Part of my problem is this book seems kind of aimless?? Like David just rolling along from one adventure to the next and I'm not sure where he even WANTS to go haha

Any thoughts?

@BarkingMadRead @CatLass007 @ChelseaM6010 @julieclair @Lcsmcat @Read4life
8mo
Lcsmcat It is a bit Boy‘s Life, isn‘t it? And I had a hard time with the battle scene. First, that one man and a boy could hold off the whole crew, and second that he wasn‘t more traumatized by it. 8mo
ChelseaM6010 I Agree with @Lcsmcat about the battle scene. (edited) 8mo
julieclair I think he doesn‘t know where he wants to go. He‘s been kidnapped and is just taking each day as it comes. I agree about the battle scene. It was so weird that it didn‘t seem to bother him at all, and in fact was even proud of what he‘d done. 8mo

ch 1 - David is off to make his fortune!! Or maybe find out he has one when he meets his rich... relative?? I quite loved his sweet neighbor sending him off with three gifts (round, square, cubical haha) However, I'm seeming to find mixed results when I try to see if you can actually make Lily of the Valley tea, so maybe hold off on using that as a cure-all!

Looking forward to seeing where this adventures leads!!

March's #RandomClassic is Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. I've never read this one, but I'm anticipating something similar to his other novels - quite a lot of rollicking adventures meant to appeal to young lads in the 1880s, with a splash of history thrown in. There are 30 chapters, so we'll read a chapter a day starting March 1 and actually finish by the end of the month for once!!

Let me know if you're interested in reading this one!!

This was a fun story, but I don‘t think it will be particularly memorable. I wasn‘t expecting the whole story to take place in Scotland, but I definitely enjoyed the Scottish setting. It didn‘t hold a lot of suspense for me; I always felt things were going to work out for David, no matter the difficulties along the way.

Not a great month for #BookSpinBingo in April 2021. Left free spaces open and didn‘t make much headway on the rest. On to May.

SamAnne Oh—is the Winterkill on your card the one by Craig Lesley? (edited) 4y
rabbitprincess @SamAnne No, it‘s by Ragnar Jónasson, the last in his Dark Iceland series. There seem to be several books with that title—there‘s one by C.J. Box as well! 4y
SamAnne @rabbitprincess he is on my list to read. The Winterkill I refer to takes place on an Indian reservation near the Columbia, and the drowning of Celilo Falls and one of the most important salmon fishing sites by the Dallas Dam figures prominently in it. I read it in my 20s and it‘s one of the books that lead me to work on salmon restoration and dam removals. (edited) 4y

I was not as impressed by the book as I thought I would be. Maybe, this is because I read this book as an adult and not as a child and hence the plots seem predictable to me.

Today‘s author spotlight: Robert Louis Stevenson! Born today in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, he died at 44. He married in San Francisco & had no children together. He was good friends with Hawaii‘s King Kalākaua. He was a much-loved advocate of the Samoan people, & his adopted Samoan name was Tusitala, or “Teller of Tales”. They buried him atop Mt. Vaea. He was excluded from literary canon until recent decades. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

LapReader If you are ever in Samoa go visit his house and lush gardens. It‘s stunning and the Samoan guide is so informative and sings a song about him unaccompanied by anything and it‘s very stirring. Would have liked to hike to his grave but we had the kids with us and we don‘t think they would have made it. I‘ll post some pics later and tag you. 5y

I love Robert Louis Stevenson's writing and Kidnapped, I believe, is his best book. He gives us the character of David Balfour who you can't help but wish that things would go his way and he would come into his inheritance. It is set in the 18th century Scottish highlands and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction.

This poor little 21 year old library castoff seemed a fitting candidate for my first freehanded experiment in re-covering a book. I don‘t have any glue handy but eventually I‘ll get some so I can make prettier labels for the putting the title on and maybe cover art.
In any case, I figured I couldn‘t make it look any *worse* ...and it turned out pretty well....except that I labelled it upside down.😅

robinb Nice! 👏👏 7y
Smangela And how did you go about this?? I have never thought of doing this before and it is genius. 7y
Purrsistently @Smangela I had scrapbooking cardstock and just cut it down to the size I wanted, snipped it at places it needed to bend, folded the edges over and taped it to the inside, creased the spine so it will open and close properly. :D 7y

Purrsistently When I get some archive glue on monday there won‘t be any need to fold/snip because I can just glue it down, and also make pretty labels for the front 7y
