Trail of Lightning | Rebecca Roanhorse
While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dintah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their lastand besthope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much larger and more terrifying than anything she could imagine. Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel to the rez to unravel clues from ancient legends, trade favors with tricksters, and battle dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology. As Maggie discovers the truth behind the disappearances, she will have to confront her pastif she wants to survive. Welcome to the Sixth World.

I read this for the #IndigenousAuthor prompt of the #ReadingWomenChallenge. Maggie is a monster slayer and must grapple with her clan powers and their consequences as well as the loss she has faced in her life. Her world has a dystopian setting after a big flood. There is a lot of action mixed with fantasy and Navajo stories. This is the first book in the series.

This is fundamentally a good read, in its genre. A little too YA for me, but reminds me of the best parts of early Anita Blake books. Roanhorse could improve her skill at writing dialogue. But her vision of a post-climate catastrophe world is unique and interesting, especially the supernatural elements. Might borrow not buy book 2.

I enjoyed this tale of Navajo/Diné inspired rural fantasy with a destroyed flooded American landscape, a walled world where gods and mythological creatures have returned to daily life, and Maggie the monsterslayer has to navigate this new world.

ReadingEnvy At the same time I'm thinking about cultural appropriation and have been reading a wide variety of opinions on the author's "right" to use some of the ideas that she did. Who owns these stories and names? It's something to think about. 2mo
collegecatlady In my opinion, the author being Indigenous means she has the right to the stories and names in the novel. Oral stories such as the ones in the book are owned by certain cultures, not particular people since the stories are spread as tales. I definitely think we always have to be aware of who is telling what, especially when they aren‘t of the culture, in this case Indigenous. Love your review! 2mo
Addison_Reads I just finished this one and I really enjoyed it. Great thought provoking question too about who owns these stories and names. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
ReadingEnvy @collegecatlady I was reading some stuff that said that because she was not Navajo she was giving away Navajo secrets and then some counterarguments to that. I'm not sure I would know where to land but she's definitely closer to the culture than I would be. 2mo
ReadingEnvy @Addison_Reads it's not my usual type of book but I enjoyed it too. She can describe a person's presence very effectively. 2mo
collegecatlady @ReadingEnvy Totally! People felt the same way about Leslie Marmon Silko giving away secrets when she wrote many of her books. It‘s an interesting discussion for sure! 2mo

I'm still trying to read this. It's not that it isn't good. It's just that apparently I've had too much dark lately and need some fluff before I can handle this.

Edited: I think I figured out what the problem is. I don't care about the characters. They're not grabbing me, so I don't care what happens to them. Will try again later. I bought both books, so I'll have them for whenever “later“ may be. Edit: Finally finished this.

First book in what looks like a great series, features strong female protagonist, Navajo history & culture. In the future, the Big Water has wiped out most of the US, with the Navajo nation surviving. Monsters have returned though too and some people, including Maggie Hoskie have acquired formidable clan powers. Part mystery, part thriller, potential for romance. Great fight scenes! https://cannonballread.com/2019/08/trail-of-lightning-elcicco/

I am so mad it has taken me so long to read this book! It was great. A bit slow at the beginning, but once I figured out the charcters and plot, within the first few chapters, I was hooked. It is an inventive and unique dystoption/scify novel. I loved Maggie has a main character, and I loved that Native American cultire was such a huge part of the plot.

This story is what happens when this post flood society has to face the reality of living in a world where the gods and monsters of Native American folklore come back to life and the clan powers that have been dormant for generations manifest in certain people. I like that Maggie isn‘t really you‘re typical hero because she‘s a monster slayer and isn‘t instantly liked. She‘s a face in the YA genre that was definitely needed.

What a great start to a new series. I loved Maggie the Monsterslayer struggling to overcome a dark past and find her place in a world of immortals and monster after a great flood has reshaped the world as we know it. This has a great mix of tense dark moments, humor and the warm emotional moments between friends becoming family. I can‘t wait to read the next book in the series.

This is one of those weird ones where I‘m glad I‘ve read the book, I‘m so excited it exists, but I didn‘t get a whole lot of joy from it and probably won‘t read the sequel. Don‘t get me wrong: I love the world, the culture, the heroine. But it plays hard with some tropes that sit badly with me and right now I‘m just not enjoying bleak reads. I may try a reread when I‘m in a more resilient place.

imyril Specific things that switched me right off: fridging as character development and motivation; fridging as an explicit tactic by the villain to force that development and motivation (woah way to double down); and I never trusted Kai so the romance left me stone cold, slow burn or not. Also, I was happy for Neizghani to die in a fire from the start, so I think I missed on some intended shock value. Total creep. 6mo
imyril Thing I really liked: that Maggie‘s arc is about learning that you can recover from harm, make emotional connections and forge new bonds. The opening had me worried, but I like how her position was challenged and she learned to aspire for more. 6mo
