The Lion in the Living Room
The Lion in the Living Room: How House Cats Tamed Us and Took Over the World | Abigail Tucker
By turns funny and disturbing, The Lion in the Living Room is full of surprises. Like all the best nonfiction, it will make you think twice about the world around you. Elizabeth Kolbert, bestselling author of The Sixth Extinction Dig deep into the history, biology, and science of house cats in this charming, highly informative read that explains how cats came to rule. B&N Reads Eminently readable and gently funny, Tuckers blend of pop science and social commentary will appeal to cat lovers as well as a broad general audience with an interest in natural history. Library Journal (starred review) A lively adventure through history, natural science, and pop culture in search of how cats conquered the world, the Internet, and our hearts. House cats rule back alleys, deserted Antarctic islands, and our bedrooms. Clearly, they own the Internet, where a viral cat video can easily be viewed upwards of ten million times. But how did cats accomplish global domination? Unlike dogs, they offer humans no practical benefit. The truth is they are sadly incompetent rat-catchers and pose a threat to many ecosystems. Yet, we love them still. To better understand these furry strangers in our midst, Abby Tucker travels to meet the breeders, activists, and scientists whove dedicated their lives to cats. She visits the labs where people sort through feline bones unearthed from the first human settlements, treks through the Floridian wilderness in search of house cats on the loose, and hangs out with Lil Bub, one of the worlds biggest feline celebrities. Witty, intelligent, and always curious, Tucker shows how these tiny creatures have used their relationship with humans to become one of the most powerful animals on the planet. The appropriate reaction to a cuddly kitten, it seems, might not be aww but awe.

A fascinating book, it has cured me of ever wanting another cat, as they are not only vicious killers, but also carry an extremely scary disease who effects are just beginning to be understood. Cats are adorable and the perfect companion for humanity as we raze across the planet destroying the animal kingdom as we go.
4/5 stars, this book completely changed my understanding of cats and their role in human history, and the history of the planet.

An interesting look at the history, biology, and science of house cats that attempts to explain why we let them live with us even though they offer no practical benefit to humans besides cuteness. Or is it more that they let US live with THEM? 🧐

Tacy,my napping model. An Interesting read on how cats came to be our companions.Ms Tucker writes in an entertaining style and covers a wide range of cat facts. She covers cat shows and internet obsessions plus daily life with a pet cat.She doesn‘t shy away from difficult topics like the struggles of abandoned or feral cats and their effect on bird populations.Other topics include the ancient Egyptians obsession with cats and Hello Kitty fandom.

Though this book was a lot slower than I'd like, it has vivid prose and lots of #catfacts. Tucker is a loving cat owner herself, but she does take a critical eye to cats‘ role in our lives and our planet that may make cat fans defensive.

Despite being a lifelong "dog person", I really liked this audiobook! Tucker discusses the anthropology, science and culture behind humanity's relationship with cats. She explains the phenomenon of social media cats, and why dogs haven't had the same effect on the digital world. The parts about feral cats and how cats look like human babies were especially interesting.

I'm thinking about putting one of them in my bedroom to keep them separate at least until I get the kittens stiches removed. #littenkitten

This pop science book is fascinating and highly recommended for anyone interested in animal domestication and specifically cats. It certainly has made me look at my boys a bit differently. Easy-to-read writing with a sense of humor, Tucker delves into the history of animal domestication, evolution, social behavior, internet memes, animal rights groups, ecological issues. There is some filler but at 190 pages, it's still a short book.
