Mr. Dickens and His Carol
Mr. Dickens and His Carol: A Novel of Christmas Past | Samantha Silva
129 posts | 81 read | 4 reading | 118 to read
A charming, comic, and ultimately poignant story about the creation of the most famous Christmas tale ever written. Its as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; its all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps. Anthony Doerr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All The Light We Cannot See A debut novel with the wit of Shakespeare in Love and the evergreen charm of A Christmas Carol For Charles Dickens, each Christmas has been better than the last. But when his newest book is an utter flop, his publishers offer an ultimatum: either he writes a Christmas book in a month, or they will call in his debts, and he could lose everything. Grudgingly, he accepts, but with relatives hounding him for loans, his wife planning an excessively lavish holiday party, and jealous critics moving in for the kill, he is hardly feeling the Christmas spirit. Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace and inspiration in London itself, his great palace of thinking. And on one of his long walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets a young woman who might be just the muse he needs. Over the next few weeks, Eleanor Lovejoy propels Dickens on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambitionand Christmas. Laced with humor, rich historical detail from Dickens life, and clever winks to his work, Samantha Silva's Mr. Dickens and His Carol is an irresistible new take on an adored classic.

A lovely book. I enjoyed it immensely. Of course, I also love A Christmas Carol; and have to admit I know very, little of Charles Dickens' actual life.. Although, now I might have to find a good biography on the man. And this a work of fiction, but I found it charming

This is between a pick and a so-so for me. I almost bailed after beginning section two, but glad I stuck with it for the outcome. My favorite parts were the descriptions of the setting, London at Christmas. I was looking for something festive to read and this mostly is. I adore the book A Christmas Carol and so it‘s probably best for me not to know too much about Dickens personally because I don‘t want to judge his works based on his personality.

jessinikkip Lovely. This is a book ive been wanting to get and read for a while now. Glad to see it wasnt a bad choice. 3w

I finished this Christmas Eve and unfortunately I found it to be a disappointment. The premise was silly. The book dragged significantly in the middle. The characters were mostly unsympathetic. This is a 276-page book and it took me a full week to read because I never felt compelled to pick it up. I would say watch The Man Who Invented Christmas and call it good. They cover the exact same topic and the movie‘s explanation is much more plausible.

How delightful to finish this book on the road on Christmas Day! Since I finally read A Christmas Carol this season, I could read this Christmas present from last year!
I loved this book and the big emotions I experienced, the care Silva took to keep true to Dickens and his world, and for a debut novel, I'm excited to see her future work. I absolutely recommend this, but have a hankie ready.
Happy Holidays!

This was a fun and interesting read for the holidays. It was delightful. However if you are interested in learning about Charles Dickens I'd read this book first, then do your research, you'll find he was quite an ass.

2/5 ⭐️s This was a disappointing read. The story was not very plot driven and I found it to be very slow. Plus Dickens was selfish and had such a big ego, which was annoying. Not the Christmas tale I was looking for. The ending was nice at least.

It's a nice Christmas story for the whole family to enjoy. Charles Dickens is having a midlife crisis at Christmas time, and his publishers are demanding a Christmas novel when everything in his life is falling apart. When Silva is not decorating the page with her verbosity, she tells a pretty good story about Dickens‘ internal struggle.

I suppose someone who takes Dickens a lot less seriously than I do might enjoy this cozy, sentimental novel around the holidays. I thought it was lame. It didn‘t start out too badly, but as soon as Mrs. Dickens left London with the kids it went downhill and got progressively dumber. I skimmed toward the end and then read the end, to see if it finished well. It didn‘t. 👎🏻

5 star read for me! This was an absolutely charming novel about Charles Dickens and his creation of A Christmas Carol. The author describes it as a playful reimagining of how this beloved Christmas story came to be and the fiction is masterfully blended with plenty of biographical info about his life. It‘s such a beautiful love letter to Charles Dickens! My only regret...I wish I had read it around the holidays.

A Christmas Carol: the perfect Christmas read! Can never get tired of reading it! 5/5

Holidays on Ice: I definitely prefer Calypso. Some stories in this collection were a little too twisted for me. 3.5/5

I expected something warm, cosy, & perhaps fluffy, but somehow this was more fluff, less warmth. Dickens was a frustrating character in terms of his fictionalised relationship to a muse figure, & I found this aspect trite & overly-sentimental. I wanted more details about his writing process & the publishing industry in the Victorian era but the book was short on that. The lack of the good stuff makes me want to read The Man Who Invented Christmas.

I debated between pick & so-so, but this did not wow me. I truly enjoyed the details of the setting and the literary references. However, I found the character of Dickens very frustrating through much of the story, and I don‘t know enough about the facts of his life to know which parts are accurate. Overall, I went in looking for a heartwarming Christmas story, and I felt it took too long to get to that point.

Enjoyed this for the most part. Occasionally found characters annoying but that's kinda was the Christmas Carol redemption point. Beautiful descriptions of Victorian England. Liked references to the 'new' traditions such as afternoon tea, and Christmas cards. #winterholidayreads

I'm DNFing this after 110 pages. I know this is meant to be a redemption piece and that he learns a valuable lesson in the end, but dammit, Dickens is such a JERK in the first part of this book (especially to his wife) that I just can't go on. I adore Dickens as an author too much to keep going. 😔 I very rarely leave books unfinished, but being this close to Christmas I'd rather read a better holiday tale-like A Christmas Carol! 💕📚

batsy I should have bailed. Now I'm more that 3/4 in and I feel compelled to see it through :/ I thought Dickens' disregard for his wife once she was out of sight so infuriating... 13mo
