Tagged book is by a #newtomeauthor and I plan to read it for August‘s #authoramonth challenge. (Matrix was my second read by Lauren Groff and I read it in February.) #aboutabook
Soft pick. I really like the writing style where the story works backwards 3 parts - 1947, 1944, 1941. This allows reader to both realize how things got to where they were in the future (earlier) chapters and also have a strange sense of retroactive anxiety for what you know is coming.
I wish the overall story was more entertaining, I was a bit bored, Sarah Waters has a writing style that can only be described as overwritten
3.5😍

Next physical book plus my new book sleeve.
I'm currently reading physical books in daylight and a different book on Kindle in the evening.
Hoping I will enjoy this as I loved Fingersmith but DNFed and was bored by The Little Stranger
One of the characters mentions that people‘s pasts are more interesting than their futures, and this book is told with that in mind, introducing the characters after World War II and telling their stories in reverse. I had mixed feelings about this format, but Waters‘ writing is, as always, in top form, her many characters and often bombed late-war London are brought vividly to life.
What are you reading this weekend? I plan to start this, hopefully today. I have so many library books to get through as the holds always seem to come in at once 🤦🏼♀️ 😂

I think the black & white cover suits the subject matter very well. (I added the yellow border.)
Set in WWII, this story is told backwards and there is no final conclusion, yet it all makes sense and is beautifully done. I love Sarah Waters.
After reading too many WW2 books, this one was so very different. Female experiences of war is something I'm drawn to for reasons unknown. This one also had lesbian characters--a bit of a fresh story
Settling in for an afternoon play. I love Sarah Waters so let‘s hope they‘ve done a good job! Any Littens in the audience by chance????
I love Sarah Waters - this wasn‘t my favourite ( The Fingersmith!) but I did like it lots. So booked to see the play. 🤞🏼
A gentle plot for Sarah Waters. I enjoyed this book, but the reverse chronological order was weird. I wanted to re-read it immediately in the proper order, but it was a library book and I had to return it. I'll check it out again eventually. #lesbianlit #lesbian 🌈
“The Night Watch” is the third Sarah Waters book I‘ve read. I didn‘t enjoy it as much as the previous two and didn‘t feel such strong connections with these characters, but don‘t let that put you off, Waters is an amazing writer I‘d highly recommend.
My full review is up on my blog now 📚

Pains me to give a Waters bk less than 4 stars. Unclear why she told it in reverse, didn‘t seem necessary & left me unsure about what had happened for the chars. Also had hard time keeping relationships clear & didn‘t care abt Duncan. Maybe I‘m a cranky queer bitch but would‘ve liked just the women, maybe just K & H. Still loved the writing & queer rep & the experiences of women during wartime was poignant, but overall my least fave of hers 3/5 ⭐️
‘Never mind if the girl‘s not queer; apparently I‘m so irresistible that if she‘s not a raving Lesbian when she sits down with me for a gin and French, she will be when she stands up again!‘

She laughed, unhappily. “*Get over it.* What a funny phrase that is! As if one‘s grief is a fallen house, and one has to pick one‘s way over the rubble to the ground on the other side...I‘ve got lost in my rubble, Mickey. I can‘t seem to find my way across it. I don‘t think I *want* to cross it, that‘s the thing. The rubble has all my life in it still...”
I‘ve owned this for a while and I‘ve really wanted to read it because SARAH WATERS but I‘ve been hesitant because once I finish it, there will only be one of her books left for me to read, and then if I read that one there will be NONE and that simply cannot happen so I need her to publish something soon please kthx #nowreading
While I thought the writing was good, the historical details about WWII were interesting, and the backwards timeline was a novel concept, I ended up feeling rather meh about this one. It was too long and left me feeling unsatisfied with the characters‘ arcs.
Another wonderful novel by Sarah Waters. I will admit it wasn‘t my favorite by her but I think that‘s due to my own personal idiosyncrasies. The novel has an interesting backward time line structure that isn‘t usual of her writing. However, as usual there are twists and the character‘s timelines intertwine in that unique way she does. As always, Historically accurate and a great view into being LGBTQ in a different time period.
Had trouble finishing this one. Half way through the second section I started wondering what moving backward in time was teaching us, the readers. I don‘t know if I figured it out.
Suggestions welcome.

I liked this book, but I didn‘t love it. It starts in post-war London and follows the characters backward in time, slowly revealing information as the story progressed . I can‘t imagine this story working any other way.
“Was it crazy, she wondered, to be as grateful as she felt now, for moments like this, in a world that had atomic bombs in it- and concentration camps, and gas chambers?”

I can‘t even. The generosity of Littens amazes me every day. @AmyG This was so thoughtful and sweet and completely appreciated. Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️
I know... I have a problem... but for $5.35 I couldn‘t say no!! 😩🤣📚
This is my second Waters book and I really enjoyed it. The novel begins after WWII and follows the characters backward in time. I thought the unconventional timeline worked really well, revealing secrets and what led them to be the people they are in the first part of the novel.
This is my last book for the first season of #Booked2018 ! #unconventionalromance 🎉
A swim, some sun, and a book! Now if I could just convince my sister to go make us a margarita my afternoon would be just about perfect! 😜🍹

For this prompt I thought I'd list all the historical fiction books on my #tbr list. Some of these have been on my shelf for years. I've heard good things about all of them so looking forward to finally reading them!

This uniquely structured novel, moving backwards in time, follows the lives of four Londoners as they endure the blitz of the 1940s. Waters nails the tricky timeline and provides in depth character studies for each of the characters as you get to slowly see how and why their lives take a turn after the war, for better or worse.
Already digging into this one, out of my #secretsantagoespostal package!
Unable to enjoy the prose, kinda confusing for me plus it goes backwards with a few protagonists going back and forth. It actually gave me a headache!
During the WW2, London was bombed by the Nazis for 76 consecutive nights, known as ‘the Blitz‘. Those who survived watched for the bombs that would start to fall just after dark. Hence the source of the title. The bombing raids impact all the characters in the story, one way or another.

These were gifts and are #TBRsomeday soon. Night Watch is on my #tbrbingo so will get to it soon
Moving story, told backwards, about four Londoners living their live during and after WWII. How they try to get their lives back on track after all that happened. And how everything doesn't work out the way they supposed. Great characters, great dialogues. #booker #manbooker
Although I have many, many books by #lgbtqauthors on my Goodreads shelves, I could only find one (that I'm sure of) on my physical shelves. I really enjoyed the three other books of hers that I've read, so I look forward to eventually enjoying this one from my TBR as well. #junebookbugs
This book wasn't what I thought it was going to be, based on how it was described to me. However, it was still a really book! It's about 4 main people starting after WWII, in the middle of the war, and then the beginning of the war and how they are connected. It was a very intriguing story. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
These are the fiction books I picked up at our massive library book sale today. I'll have to post a picture of the sale itself so you can see how big it really is. The Trigiani and the Waters are both signed. The Bennett is an ARC. As always, I'm excited for all of them! #happybibliophage #bookhaul #lovemylibrary
This is a really well done character study! The book starts in 1947 and then moves backwards through the War to 1941 to show you how our characters are changed in those few years. It's just so easy to connect with these characters. And Sarah Waters pulls off this reverse timeline so well! And as always her period research is on point. I just can't get enough of her works! ❤️💛💚💙💜
