Overall, I enjoyed this one even though the town is a little stereotypical and despite the very odd reason that most everyone in town shuns the main character but that I could never really accept as plausible. Even with these shortcomings, the novel makes me want to visit Tasmania.

Solo sunset walk with the tagged book in my ears. I also saw bats out hunting, which always gives me a thrill!

PaperbackPirate When I told a coworker we have bats in our city she couldn‘t believe it and asked me to take a picture of one. 😂🦇💙 2w
PaperbackPirate Beautiful sunset photo! Thanks for sharing! 🦇🌇 2w
TieDyeDude Bats are not super common in Alaska; I haven't seen any yet. I liked walking around at dusk in Colorado and glimpsing the few we had nearby. Beautiful photo! 2w
ImperfectCJ @PaperbackPirate @TieDyeDude Thanks! As always with sunset photos, the colors aren't as vibrant as they were in real life, and yet I keep trying to photograph sunsets! I got a video of a bat, but it's not great. I bet if I had video editing skills, I could improve it. 2w

Kieran returns to his coastal home town to help his parents move. Years earlier a violent storm hit the town and Kieran's brother Finn and two other people died. Kieran has carried the guilt of his brothers death for decades as Finn was coming out into the storm in his boat to rescue Kieran. When a murder occurs during Kieran's visit it opens up the past and what really happened the day the storm hit. Overall a very good thriller. ⬇️

bthegood I have read one other book by the author – The Lost Man - which I enjoyed even more than this one – so far Harper has not disappointed –
Storygraph monthly wrap up –
Make a great day everyone 😎

I really enjoyed this!
It put me in mind of the drama Black Snow, with Travis Fimmel: it's Australian, has dual timelines, a young woman is murdered and the past gets raked up again, to the distress of the inhabitants of a close knit town. (Could wish for greater victim-diversity, but, as Kieran observes, "they don't go after men and babies.")

I ended up having several longer than usual cardio workouts because I didn't want to stop listening. ?

Prompt: TRAGEDY

The locals have never forgotten the tragedy that most people believe was Kiernan‘s fault because he shouldn't have been in the caves when the storm surged.

Just what was the intrigue of those caves?

A haunting mystery with revelations you won't see coming.

This is the third Jane Harper I‘ve read and was my least favorite. I almost bailed at one point, but glad I finished it as I did like the ending. Next up: The Lost Man to wrap up #authoramonth for March.
Think it‘s appropriate to be reading this title as March Madness is all about survivors. Purdue to win it all I hope!

Hm. Well, this was my first Jane Harper, and I‘m not sure how to feel. Seems like such an abrupt ending, with no resolution.

I did like the atmosphere and I think I‘d give the author another try, but I‘d say I‘m just whelmed by this one.

#AuthorAMonth

Eyelit I was underwhelmed by this one, myself. Luckily I had already listened to The Dry (which was so much better imho) that I wasn‘t thrown off Harper completely 8mo

I listened to this in a day while stitching. It‘s an easy read, not a lot of tension with mostly likable characters. The story slowly unfolds what really happened during an unusually violent storm and the drowning of two loved men from a small community. 3.5 🌟

Loved this! A town living in the shadow of a tragedy from a decade ago experiences a murder. The tight knit community keeps its secrets as the detective from the mainland investigates. A strained friend group is forced to confront the events of the past. It did not go how I expected & it was very atmospheric, not too dark or graphic so it was really bingeable.
Would def read more of hers! Thanks #authoramonth

I have loved all of Jane Harper‘s books so far - especially the Australian landscapes and for that this book was no different. The quiet coastal town, a maze of caves and an endless beach. However for me, this was not my favourite. It felt like at times nothing was really happening, then suddenly just at the end all was revealed with no real resolution. More a more about family and relationships than a crime novel. It was good but not great.

My only complaint about Jane Harper novels is that reading them seriously impacts the rest of my life -- it's just me and this atmospheric Australian whodunnit wonderfulness until I'm finished. Although I will say that this is the first one I've done in print, and I missed the Aussie audio narrator ...

Outback-noir - is that a thing? Not in this case possibly, as this is set in Tasmania, but I do love Jane Harper‘s books and the sense of place. The previous three were crime/thrillers perhaps, but this one felt more focussed on families, friends, loss, guilt and secrets amidst the claustrophobia of small town life. Kept me hooked to the very end. (Not feeling the cover of this one though. Disappointing)

CarolynM Outback-noir is absolutely a thing, but I agree this one isn't. Chris Hammer, Sarah Bailey, Mark Brandi, Dave Warner are all writing it. I like Jane Harper a lot, but my favourite in the genre is Garry Disher's Hirsch series starting with 2y
JillR Thank you for the recommendations @carolynm ! Will check these out! 2y
squirrelbrain Gosh that is a very generic ‘red coat‘ cover isn‘t it? 2y
JillR @squirrelbrain it is, isn‘t it? I love the covers of her other books but this one just felt generic. I‘m afraid I do judge a book by its cover, and would never have picked this up had I not known the author… 2y

This was my #DoubleSpin and my first Harper book. This was actually two mysteries taking place 10 years apart on a small coastal town. Kieran and his partner and baby are returning home after a long absence for a short visit to pack up his parents for a move. Ten years before, as a teenager during a catastrophic storm, his life was changed by a family tragedy for which he still feels guilt. When a young woman is murdered on the beach, it brings🔻

robinb up memories of a young girl‘s disappearance during that storm. Are they somehow connected, and if so, how? I enjoyed this story. It was suspenseful, there were lots of secrets/suspects, and it kept me guessing. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the locale and legend of The Survivors. However, I did find Kieran‘s deduction of the villain at the denouement a little surprising given the few clues provided. Still a solid read, and I‘ll definitely 🔻 2y
robinb read more from her. @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 2y

When Kieran returns home to Evelyn Bay after a long absence, reminders of the tragic events that drove him away are everywhere. After a young woman is found dead, long kept secrets begin to unravel, revealing the truth about that long ago day. Grief and guilt mark this slow burn story of loss in a small coastal town.

3rd book read by this author. Not my favorite but still like how author develops her stories in a slowly way, giving you the opportunity to know more the characters. I like character driven plots. Some parts were some kind predictable. I liked Kieran and how he managed his psychological situations. Also, I enjoy reading with the audiobook, for me, the narrator‘s accent amplify the story atmosphere, I feel emerged in the story, region, culture 4⭐️

I‘ve never read 200 books in one year. Never. It‘s been my GR goal for the past three years. In 2019 I almost made it, with 197 books. Last year I was close again, at 194. 2021 started off abysmally with a case of covid and a short-lived reading slump. I remember as the year started, I was feeling so sick and defeated. #2021Book61
I've liked all of Harper's books so far, but this might be one of my favorites. She sets up the mystery so almost every character looks suspicious, and you're also never completely sure who you hope is innocent. She also does a great job in this book of making the setting feel almost like another character. The ending felt slightly abrupt, but I did like how she wrote the reveal of the murderer.

A pick although bordering on so-so. Probably my least favourite of her books so far. Kieran and girlfriend Mia are back in their hometown helping his mom prepare to move out of her home due to her husband‘s rapidly advancing dementia. Of course, Kieran feels immense guilt about an unspoken of until a few chapters in mysterious accident and then there‘s also a disappearance. It‘s a mystery potpourri. Bring back Aaron Falk!!
