Ghost Bride | Yangsze Choo
Now a Netflix original drama! From the New York Times bestselling author of The Night Tiger, a Reese's Book Club pick, Yangsze Choo's stunning debut, The Ghost Bride, is a startlingly original novel infused with Chinese folklore, romantic intrigue, and unexpected supernatural twists.Li Lan, the daughter of a respectable Chinese family in colonial Malaysia, hopes for a favorable marriage, but her father has lost his fortune, and she has few suitors. Instead, the wealthy Lim family urges her to become a "ghost bride" for their son, who has recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, a traditional ghost marriage is used to placate a restless spirit. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at what price? Night after night, Li Lan is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, where she must uncover the Lim family's darkest secrets--and the truth about her own family.--Publishers Weekly

5 🌟This book sat on my tbr shelf for too long. I wish I would have picked it up sooner because the fact that this magical book hadn't been read by me and just sat there waiting truly breaks my heart. It's a very atmospheric read with a lot of Malaysian-Chinese folklore intertwined with a ghostly adventure and loveable characters. If you are debating on reading this one, definitely go for it. I couldn't imagine how anyone could be disappointed.

This one is a reread of a favorite book and oh yeah, it holds up. Tho honestly i wonder if maybe i appreciate it more now. I decided to reread bc of the Netflix drama and oh no, i like both do much even tho they're so different. The book is very nuanced. It's historically and culturally (i assume) accurate. Li Lan is such a cool character and her adventure is more high stakes and long in the book. Def recommend! Er lang x Li Lan forevaaaaaa ❤️❤️🤣

The writing style suited the genre and the setting. I struggled to enjoy the plot, especially in the middle of the book because the pace was relatively slow. I couldn't connect to the female lead character as she appeared very naive and didn't seem to learn from mistakes. Though I was intrigued by the historic facts and culture woven into this fantasy story.

1. I consider anything before 1960 to be historical fiction. I was born in 1963, so anything after that seems contemporary to me.
2. Tagged. It takes place in 1893 Malaya, and is a beautiful but eerie read. It's not my usual kind of book but a friend recommended it.

This was a very atmospheric book, the author transported me to several different places and each of them felt distinct.

I like that the romance was secondary to the main plot. I've been burnt by paranormal romance books that have an interesting plot that gets forgotten about when the romance starts

I liked the main character too. Excited to see how she translates onto screen in the TV adaptation

Kind of a slow reading week for my #BookReport - the tagged book, while enjoyable, bogged me down early in the week. I finished the first two Sentinels of the Galaxy books in the last couple of days and started Defending the Galaxy this morning. Can't wait to find out how Snyder wraps things up!! So even though it was a slow reading week, I enjoyed them all, so that helps!! @Cinfhen

TheAromaofBooks PS All the apples are in at the orchard - we had a record-breaking year, and actually there are still apples on the trees, which felt so wasteful, but we just don't have any place to put them/won't be able to sell them! So the deer also get a banner year of snacks! 2y

Do you ever read a book where it's interesting enough that you don't want to bail on it, but not so interesting that you want to pick it up instead of doing other mindless activities like playing Two Dots on your phone?? 😂 I did like this book overall. The concept was really interesting and I liked the MC. I also felt like the author did a good job explaining parts of the afterlife on a way that felt organic to the story. ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) But somehow, it just was kind of a slow story?? It never felt very urgent, and even though it was only 350 pages, it took me almost three days to read, which is a pretty slow pace for me. It was a book I enjoyed whenever I was reading it, but never particularly wanted to pick up when I wasn't. However, it's been on my TBR since 2014, so it's nice to finally get it off the list!!! A soft pick for me, mostly for the unique concept. 2y

This book could have done better with another 100 pages minimum. It moved along so fast. The love plot seemed like insta-love and overall very weak.
It felt like reading an overview of a soap opera at the end of a season rather than a novel.
Not my taste, but may be a nice quick read for some.

This is a really enjoyable mystery set in late 19th century Malaya. Although the cover seems aimed at Historical Fiction lovers this is more Paranormal Mystery. Li Lan‘s father considers an offer for her to become ghost bride to the recently deceased heir to a wealthy family. His ghost appears in her dreams and she is swept up into a chase to find the source of his power, the mystery of his death and her own past. ⬇️

Centique My favourite aspect of the book was the detailed portrayal of the Chinese concept of the afterlife - absolutely mesmerising. This is more rollicking adventure though - not the lush prose of most historical fiction. 4y

This is why I ♥️ #MyTBR! I asked for recs for spooky books, preferably haunted house stories. And I got 3 picks I may never have found on my own.
In The Stopped Heart, 2 families are haunted in the same place a hundred years apart.
In The Good House, you follow the Toussaint women and their connection to their land for generations.
The Ghost Bride isn‘t about a haunted house, but spookiness abounds. It was my fave - couldn‘t put it down ♥️

3.5/5
Li Lan, the MC, is propositioned to be a ghost bride for the deceased son of a very powerful family. And as she is haunted by the ghost of the groom, she finds herself pulled into the afterlife. Choo‘s world-building and description of 1800s Malaysia is vivid and rich. There are a lot of cultural references in here that I found very interesting. I did wish for more development in side characters and a better ending!

I heard this is a show on Netflix, so I picked it up. Li Lan was asked to be a ghost bride for a prestigious family's dead son. She declines, but he starts visiting her in her dreams. She overdoses and spends a third of the book in the Spirit World, where she meets a man who needs her help to prove a judge in hell is corrupt. It was an interesting concept, but it dragged in some places and some plot points weren't resolved.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. The plot meandered somewhere between mystery & fairytale, two genres I usually love, but it was irritatingly predictable at times. Also, I never felt fully immersed in the setting (I blame the italicizing of non-English language for this, tbh. It‘s totally & unnecessarily jarring). That said, I enjoyed Li Lan‘s narration, & the romance turned out to be a pleasant surprise. ★★★☆☆.
