A Darker Shade of Magic
A Darker Shade of Magic: A Novel | V. E. Schwab
From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.Kell is one of the last Travelersmagicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universesas such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the thronea place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never seea dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay aliveand that is proving trickier than they hoped.

I think if I continue this series down the line I will read it with my eyeballs, I didn‘t really care for this narrator. Just personal preference.

I liked the multiple Londons, magic system & I even liked the characters …but for some reason the story never hooked me?

DGRachel I really liked the book, and I tried the audiobook for a reread and bailed. I definitely recommend reading this one with your eyeballs 👀 2w
5feet.of.fury @DGRachel glad it wasn‘t just me! He was doing a good job, he was just… cartoony? It was distracting. 2w

There‘s something cynical about Schwab‘s writing style that I‘m very drawn to. Lila is my second favorite heroine now. The intensity of this from cover to cover was great. Very bloody and dark so it does its name justice. Pretty fantastic. The dynamic and chemistry between Lila and Kell was great and the worldbuilding & magic system was perfectly executed. Cannot hype this up enough. If this has been in your TBR for a while consider this your push

I‘ve had this book on my TBR for forever and I finally got around to reading it and I now understand all the hype about it! It lived up to all my expectations and I loved the fact that this book is all about escaping a dull world and discovering a new and more exciting one. The reader feels Lila‘s longing for adventure and need to do something more with her life that sit still. Which I feel a lot of readers can relate to and why we read books.

Magical and engrossing. I loved all the characters way too much. I loved, loved the premise. The world building, the magic that is alive, dark, disturbing, pure. It's a great read.

Hit my Goodreads challenge by finishing this reread!

I haven‘t read this series since it first released and was prompted to reread in anticipation of Schwab‘s new continuation.

I have read a lot of mediocre, overly long, fantasy recently, so reading this was such a nice reminder of how good fantasy can be when it has all the following: a tightly-paced plot, characters to root for, and not too overly-complicated world building.

I‘ve been meaning to reread A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC for, like, six years. Now I‘m on it, with Daisy‘s capable help, and I‘ll finally be able to tackle A CONJURING OF LIGHT and learn how the trilogy ends! Whee!

It took me a little while to sink back into the world, but I‘m hard into it now. I can‘t wait to gulp down the rest of ADSoM and reread A GATHERING OF SHADOWS, which I loved with desperate intensity back in 2016.

I love V E Schwab, I‘m a big fan of some of her other books (the Cassidy Blake series, Addie larue, gallant) but I‘d not done these ones. With the release of the new one in the series I was excited to get this and it didn‘t disappoint. A fantastic story, well told, characters I loved and some I feared, fantastic world building. Looking forward to more. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

TieDyeDude Wow, I just looked and it's been two years since I read this! I thought this was excellent, I just haven't gotten around to the rest of the series yet. 12mo

High stakes fantastical adventure. The right ratio of plot and character development to world-building and magical lore for yours truly. Likewise, the right level of dark to light moments for personal preference. Impressed by how Lila and Kell each feel like complex people I'd be happy to follow in future installments: equals instead of main and sidekick or main and love interest. Eager to continue in the series.

Imagine the feeling you get when you ride a launch roller coaster that shoots you as high into the sky as possible, then returns you straight to the ground. That‘s it, but man were those 15 seconds amazing. That is how I felt listening to this #audiobook

Something different for me, but I‘m already enjoying it. The idea of parallel Londons is fascinating. I don‘t read much fantasy/magic, and I don‘t know why. I almost always enjoy it when I do.

I chose “A Darker Shade of Magic” on a whim from the Audible Plus library. I am a little over 4 hours in when I think to check if the other parts of the series are also in Audible Plus. Nope. Time to head to the library because this will be finished today or tomorrow.
I knew I enjoyed V.E. Schwab, so this wasn‘t a risky choice. The Magic system is interesting and I like the parallel Londons. #audiobooks

Got about 1/3 way through yesterday and the plot is finally starting to come together. Took a bit longer than expected but the world building needed to be slower for this I think and the chapters are super short which helps keeps my attention. Excited to see where Schwab takes this!

Finished rereading this unique, parallel world, urban fantasy. I read this when it first came out and never got back to the series. That was unfortunate because it is very fun. The first half is a bit slow and confusing due to the world building, but the second half is action packed. I also love our main characters. I look forward to reading book 2 this month! 4⭐️

To buy or not to buy? 🤷‍♀️

The facts:
1. I already have at least one copy of all three.
2. I have read the first one (Darker Shade of Magic), but not the other two yet.
3. I‘d like to be inspired to read them before the new one comes out..

Thoughts?

Update: I didn‘t buy them this time. 😄

ChaoticMissAdventures As someone who has box set of multiple series that have been sitting on my shelf for a few years... I don't know if buying would inspire me to read them - Looking at you Shadow & Bone. Also I would be worried if they are not all out yet they might change the covers later, and then my set would not match. 1y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @ChaoticMissAdventures lol! Yes, i‘ve only read the first shadow and bone book too… these new covers match the new Thread of Power series coming out this year. 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @BookHoarder32 you read one! My copies are literally still in the wrapper! I bought the whole series when the tv show was announced and it is just sitting there. But I also feel like buying books is a different hobby then reading books... and I love people supporting bookshops! 1y
See All 6 Comments
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @ChaoticMissAdventures Yes! Two separate hobbies for sure. Did you watch the tv series? I didn‘t. 1y
ChaoticMissAdventures @BookHoarder32 I watched the first maybe one and a half episodes and had zero idea what was going on, so stopped.... but I don't watch a ton of TV so it might just be me. 1y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @ChaoticMissAdventures I don‘t watch much new tv these days. As far as shows based on books, I would want to read them first too before I attempted to watch them. Or if I have read them, I‘m afraid they‘ll massacre it. Like I‘m so scared to watch the upcoming Percy Jackson series on disney+. 😱 1y

I am reading this as part of a read-a-lomg with the author herself, which is really enhancing the experience. I do enjoy her writing, but I often felt like her world building slowed me down as it was so intricate. Having her weekly YouTube videos helped immensely. Her third/and last for this book is on Saturday.

“I apologize for anything I might have done. I was not myself.” (Rhy)
“I apologize for shooting you in the leg,” said Lila. “I was myself entirely.”

I loved how well developed (& imperfect) the characters and the worlds were in this book. The story was rich but not overly wordy. Such a well balanced story.

The book is set in three separate fiction Londons. Red London, a city in which magic is everywhere. Grey London, a dreary version of London, void of any semblance of magic. White London is a city which has been ravished by the use of magic leaving those who live there in poverty. The book follows Kell, one of the few gifted with the magical blood of Antari. Kell uses his powers to travel between worlds and bridge the gap learning of the past.

Still a 5⭐️ read.
