Nancy Drew 12: The Message in the Hollow Oak (Revised)
Nancy Drew 12: The Message in the Hollow Oak (Revised) | Carolyn Keene
56 posts | 46 read | 2 to read
A group of professional detectives challenge Nancy to tackle a mystery that they have failed to solve: find an invaluable message hidden by a missionary centuries ago in a hollow oak tree in Illinois. While searching the woods for the ancient tree, Nancy and her friends live with a group of young archaeologists who are excavating prehistoric Indian burial mounds on a nearby farm. A shadowy enemy stalks Nancy and harasses everyone at the dig. The young investigator pursues her dangerous adversary to an outlaws' cave, and is threatened when she discovers an unusual treasure. How Nancy, with few clues to go on, solves this complex mystery will thrill all readers.

I am late as usual for the monthly Nancy Drew book club. I will be up to date tomorrow though. 😜 This ND novel seemed somewhat chaotic to me - it was a lot of back and forth going on. At least this time there only seemed to be one story line, but it was clear from the beginning what everyone was aiming for. So, it wasn‘t quite a mystery. I understsnd it is not easy to keep the level of quality through tour a series with over 100 books, …

MariaW … some of them must be less good. 1w

I have to say I am bit annoyed of the repetition of the short introduction of the different characters at the beginning of each book of the Nancy Drew series. A few lines further along Bess and George are described again and shortly Nancy‘s first and latest adventure are mentioned. And somewhere in the book Bess is shamed for her eating habits at least once as well. 🙄🙄🙄

JenlovesJT47 They do this in Sweet Valley books as well. I think it‘s for those who haven‘t read the previous books. I agree it can be tiresome. I just finished the 4th Nancy Drew book so I haven‘t seen Bess or George yet but the early Sweet Valley books did a lot of fat shaming as well. 😳 1w

3✨I found this one hard to get through. It didn‘t catch my interest as much as most. It followed the same pattern that Nancy is really amazing and she gets herself in some dangerous situations with not super great people. #NancyBR #SeriesLove #TeamFlurken #HauntedShelves

I see that I‘m not the only one that recently finished this instalment for the #NancyDrewBR. 😅 And from the reviews of others, I‘m also not the only one that gives this a weak thumbs up. Of all the books so far, this one seems the most far fetched. The story kept my interest, but some things seemed just strange and pointless. Like the jealousy subplot, what was that about? Still, I give this 3/5⭐️ for nostalgia‘s sake.
(October 28, 2024)

Librarybelle Completely agree! 4w
kspenmoll I agree too. Too much going on & the side jealousy thing was there for what? 4w
PurpleyPumpkin @Librarybelle @kspenmoll I kept wondering if the jealousy thing was going to turn into something more sinister. In the end, it just felt like we were reading about a bunch of moody teenagers. 🙄😂 4w

My least favorite Nancy Drew book of the series so far. It just felt very ridiculous and unlikely. I also don‘t think the ebook was 100% accurate. I felt like I was missing something or there were typos and stuff. Hopefully the next one is better.

I enjoyed the book‘s setting on an archeological dig sponsored by a local college.Enjoyed farmer Clem & the fact the girls boyfriends played a bigger role this time. More knocks on the head, a goat, treasure hunt,a college student with a motorcycle smitten with Nancy. Between a Pick & a So-So.

A little late finishing this one for the buddy read. This installment felt light on danger and suspense but had plenty of car accidents! I‘ve enjoyed my time getting to know Nancy and the gang but this will be my last book in the series. I promised myself to do one year of books and goal completed. Like many of the other buddy readers, I found this one to be one of the weaker entries of the series so far. The plot felt jumbled and unrealistic (more so than usual haha) and the whole “jealousy“ side line definitely felt like padding. Definitely not my favorite.

If this had been the first Nancy Drew I read, I'm not sure I would've tried another one. The mystery feels so pointless. Random dangerous things keep happening, with no effect on the plot, so it's just, "Oh no! But it's fine!" The villain is straight out of Scooby Doo. There's an unnecessary side plot where a boy has a crush on Nancy and she seems, at worst, mildly inconvenienced by it. Oh, and Nancy digs up a baby's grave. Hard pass on all that.

Librarybelle This one is definitely not the greatest 1mo

I'd read both the 1935 and 1972 versions of this book for #NancyDrewBR. The two stories were completely different, the first set in the Canadian North and the second at an archeological dig in Ohio. I much preferred the 1935 version, which had more action and a somewhat more plausible storyline.

#LittenDetectives : I finally managed to post 5 questions! I normally use the Litsy website to do these, but the site was causing me major issues this morning. Yikes!

Please find the questions on the book‘s feed, my feed, or by searching #NancyDrewBR .

Next month‘s book is The Mystery of the Ivory Charm, and it appears that both editions are similar in plot.

I will post next month‘s info tomorrow!

Librarybelle I forgot to mention that this is another book written by Mildred Benson. The 1972 edition was revised by Grace Gote and Harriet S Adams. 1mo

5. Every month, we talk about the dangers and adventures that Nancy and her friends face. The 1972 edition had a goat hit Nancy‘s head (not a danger per se, but an unexpected moment). I shuddered when Nancy fell into the quarry.

Any standout episodes for you in the book? #NancyDrewBR

Sace The car flipping over in the river was a little shocking. 1mo
DGRachel I was disappointed the goat didn‘t actually knock her out. I was all excited to add to the #NNK count. The fall into the quarry was terrifying and I did not expect the car flip, either. 1mo
DGRachel Oh! I nearly forgot about George‘s fall of the boat between the barges. That was just as scary as Nancy falling into the quarry. I hope these kids are up to date on tetanus shots! 1mo
See All 17 Comments
Ruthiella OMG, I thought of all the things you can contract from pools of water! Polio! Giardiasis! Typhoid fever! 🤢 1mo
Bookwormjillk The train wreck in the 1935 edition was pretty thrilling. There was also a scene when Nancy flirted with a guy to get a key to a shack. I'm not sure 1960's 1970's Nancy would have done that. 1mo
dabbe Nancy being stuck on the elevator flipped me out. 😱 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement Yes, all good points. One other thing I got hung up on in this story was they don't seem all that worried about Bob. They take care of other errands, etc instead of focussing on finding him. Rude! Then when they find him after days of foul treatment, instead of feeding him & cleaning him up & allowing him to rest, he & Burt are in charge of driving the kidnappers to the authorities. @dabbe @Ruthiella @DGRachel @Sace @Bookwormjillk 1mo
DGRachel @dabbe I‘d forgotten about the elevator but to be honest, that part kind of cracked me up with her being shocked at the new fangled self service elevator. Of course it gets stuck between floors. 😂 1mo
DGRachel @CogsOfEncouragement Poor Bob. 😂 1mo
Ruthiella @CogsOfEncouragement Bob was remarkably unscathed by the ordeal! 😂 1mo
Sace @DGRachel oh yeah! That was seriously dangerous! 1mo
Sace @CogsOfEncouragement 🤣 excellent point! 1mo
dabbe @DGRachel That's the part that flipped me out. I kept thinking of the opening scene in the movie SPEED. 😂 1mo
kwmg40 I thought there was much more danger and excitement in the 1935 story, from the train wreck early in the book to Nancy setting off explosives at the end. 1mo
lauraisntwilder These incidents normally seem important to the plot, but a giant log flew through the window while they ate dinner and they just cleaned it up and went on with the weird plot of Art being jealous. What was the point of Nancy getting stuck in the elevator?? I normally enjoy the silliness of these books, but this one didn't work for me. 1mo
mrp27 The car flip flipped me out. What?! You just flip it back over and drive away?! Also George falling in the water was scary. 1mo
MariaW I wondered whether the „new“ elevator being stuck is some sort of hidden criticism regarding new technology. And the moment the entered the quarry suspecting something might be hidden at the bottom of the lake, it was clear that somewhat would somehow have to check it. I just did not expect it to be an accident. I have to say I am becoming somewhat inured to the dangers now because they all end well and/or seem to repeat themselves. 2w

4. Both editions include Bess and George! Think about the other characters Nancy and her friends meet. Any thoughts on them? Personally, I thought there was one young woman at the site in the 1972 edition that was awful! #NancyDrewBR

And, barely any Carson Drew or Hannah in the 1972 edition!

Sace Oh yeah. I know who you are talking about. 😂 1mo
DGRachel I think the mean girl was thrown in there as a red herring. I kept waiting for her to be in cahoots with Kit Kadle. I didn‘t like the jealousy storyline (dude, you just met Nancy. Did you not think to ask if she was single before you got all possessive?), but I did like Ned‘s “swell gal” of a cousin. The head of the dig was questionable-untrained people I just met want to dig? Sure! Come trample sacred ground with us! 1mo
DGRachel I also really liked that farmer guy whose name escapes me, that drove them through all the backcountry in his ancient vehicle that was apparently amphibious and the tow boat captain. 1mo
See All 11 Comments
Ruthiella @DGRachel Clem was the farmer. He was a hoot and the lone voice stating that it wasn‘t cool to be digging up the graves of the indigenous… 1mo
Bookwormjillk Carson Drew was in Canada with Nancy in the 1935 edition. He's different though- much more hands on than in the later versions. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement @DGRachel Interesting that you suspected Claire. I obviously have trust issues because I was concerned that Clem was going to be a bad guy lol. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement About Art - I hope young readers are paying attention to how easily Art was pointed in the direction of another young, smart, attractive girl and he easily became most fond of her rather than Nancy. Exactly. I thought that was one of the most realistic happenings in this tale! 1mo
bookandbedandtea Ok, I don't remember the 70s version from my childhood reading at ALL but you all have me interested in reading it now. These comments made me laugh. 😁 1mo
kwmg40 I too missed Carson Drew in the 1972 edition but he does have a significant role in the 1935 edition. I liked many of the supporting characters in the 1935 version but didn't think much of the jealousy storyline in the 1972 version. 1mo
mrp27 I too thought the annoying mean girl Clair would have a hand in the mystery. 1mo
MariaW I agree with @DGRachel and @mrp27 on Claire being suspicious. Her behaviour was going on my nerves and I kept on wondering why she did not leave or was sent away by the captain of the dig. 2w

3. The 1972 edition features Nancy on a hunt for a treasure in the “hollow oak.” She participates in an archaeological site in Illinois; this storyline received backlash from the archaeology community.

There are a lot of good resources out there to learn more about the Indigenous communities in each area. I have just one link below that briefly mentions the community near modern-day Cairo. #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel Yeah, there was so much that seemed wrong, just based on other books I‘ve read (both fiction and nonfiction). 1mo
Ruthiella Obviously professionals wouldn‘t let newcomers just start working like that with no training, etc. It‘s all part of the Nancy Drew fantasy. (edited) 1mo
See All 10 Comments
dabbe And what about these NYC detectives? Just upon hearing Nancy's aunt say, “Hey, Nancy could solve that,“ and you go and tell her everything and give her the so-called case? Then the diggers say, “Sure, come join us!“ without Nancy having any expertise--which actually was surprising since she's our female MacGyver. And while I'm at it, why aren't she, Bess, and George in college? Their boyfriends are! How about detective school? 😀 1mo
DGRachel @dabbe OMG! I thought the same thing about the girls and college! It hadn‘t really dawned on me before, but yesterday I was like “why does Nancy have all this spare time? Why isn‘t she in school?” 😂 1mo
bookandbedandtea I'm always surprised (as an adult reader) that various police departments and professionals are so ready for Nancy to investigate and join in working at any number of jobs which should require education and training. None of that ever bothered me as a kid though! 😉 1mo
kwmg40 Normally, I enjoy stories with an archeology element, but there were too many troublesome aspects of this one, as others have pointed out. 1mo
mrp27 Agreed this plot line had many problematic plot lines that I had to really suspend my disbelief. 1mo
MariaW Not only that they are allowed to work the jobs without training, I am pretty sure the excavations would be seen as a violation and robbery of the graves nowadays. I don‘t think that any First Nations community would allow it. 2w

2. The 1935 edition is the first time Nancy travels outside the US. Not only is Nancy chased by men in search of the gold rumored to be on her property in Canada, but an author she meets asks her to deliver messages to loved ones.

Speaking of gold, how familiar are you with gold mining in Canada? The link in the comments balances out the history we know with the voices from the Indigenous groups whose lands were plundered. #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel I know nothing about the gold rush in Canada, so I will definitely check out the link after work! 1mo
BarkingMadRead I had no idea Canada had a gold rush! Seems like a lot of the behavior is the same 🙄 people behaving badly for a little money 1mo
See All 9 Comments
Ruthiella I knew a little about the Canadian gold rush from reading about Jack London, but that‘s it. Very cursory. 1mo
Bookwormjillk I didn't know much about it either. I guess it makes more sense though why Nancy would be excited about winning a random lot of land in a contest. 1mo
bookandbedandtea I can't say I knew anything about the Canadian gold rush but, as @BarkingMadRead mentioned, this story certainly seems in line with other stories about riches being found and possession being 9/10ths of the law. 1mo
kwmg40 Being a Canadian, I did know something about the history of the gold rush. I tried to find out more about the setting but I couldn't figure out where “Lake Wellington“ was located, as there were few details provided. I was amused by the fact the references to Canada making it sound like it was all forests and mountains with rugged people living in log cabins! 😂 1mo
mrp27 I knew nothing about the Canadian gold rush. I must say the earlier version sounds more interesting. 1mo
MariaW While traveling Canada for three months I came across the information of the gold rush. And there are a lot TV shows regarding the search for gold nowadays, like Yukon Gold, which my partner watches frequently. 🙄 2w

1. Once again, we have two very different plot lines for this month's book.

In the 1935 edition, Nancy travels to Canada after winning a suspicious contest. In the 1972 revision, Nancy visits an archaeological dig site in Illinois via a request from a NYC detective.

Which edition did you read? What did you think of the book overall? How does it compare to the prior books we've read in the series? #NancyDrewBR

Sace I read the 1972 edition. As I said in my review, this one was a bit of a slog for me. It just wasn‘t that interesting. 1mo
Bookwormjillk I‘m almost done with the 1935 edition. It started off with a bang (literally- there was a train crash) but now they‘ve been in the woods forever and I am also finding it to be a slog. Hopefully I‘ll finish at lunch. 1mo
Sace @Bookwormjillk that sounds more interesting than my edition. 1mo
See All 12 Comments
DGRachel I read the 1972 edition. I liked the general concept of the mystery, the scavenger hunt aspect of it all, but the Native American burial ground setting was…not good. 1mo
DGRachel …and yes. @Bookwormjillk I definitely want to read your edition! 1mo
BarkingMadRead I have the 1935 version this time, which is a first! 1mo
Ruthiella Such huge differences in the editions! Nancy and the oak seem to be the only common denominators! 😅 I read the 1972 version. It was fine. I try to read these uncritically - different times and different intended audience. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement I read 1972. When we start off with Nancy being stuck in a broken down elevator for absolutely no reason. I hoped that was not a sign of things to come, but it kinda was. George falling into the water was silly, and Nancy didn't really seem to have any reason to fall into the quarry. It didn't even have her uncover a clue or anything. Eh. 1mo
bookandbedandtea The 1938 version had Nancy behaving/responding a little differently than I'm used to. She was still brave & moral but her focus was less on solving mysteries (though she did some of that) & more about protecting her land & the gold on it. Usually Nancy is completely indifferent to material gain but she was intent on her rights & ownership in this one. Not that she should allow herself to be swindled! But this was a different Nancy IMO. 1mo
kwmg40 I finished both versions and I liked the 1938 version much better. There was more intense action, more interesting characters and fewer moments where I had to completely suspend my disbelief. I agree with @bookandbedandtea that Nancy seemed a tougher character than in the later books. 1mo
mrp27 1972 version. At some point I would like to try an earlier version of ND to see the difference. 1mo
MariaW I‘ve read the 1972 version as well, but the 30ies version sounds definitely more interesting. 2w

I missed Carson Drew and Hannah in this one! Nancy is in search of a hidden treasure in an oak in Illinois that NYC detectives (yeah, kind of a weird plot line) could not find. There‘s a goat, talk of pirates and ghosts, an archaeological dig of Native American burial mounds, and a shady guy who is out to get Nancy. Not the strongest in the series, but a breeze to read. I‘m giving this one a pick with serious reservations. The mystery itself, finding an unknown object in an unknown oak tree, was fun. The desecration of Native American burial grounds? Not so much. I‘m also pretty anti-angst in most of what I read, so the jealousy subplot was annoying and the damage to old oak trees was heartbreaking to read. Finished #12 last night for #NancyDrewBR this was on my #HauntedShelf TBR & really, the cover is the spookiest thing about this one. Nancy ends up going to Illinois to a college archeology dig site to solve a centuries-old mystery that a bunch of professional detectives couldn‘t solve because she‘s Nancy Drew. This one was fine, probably not my favorite but ⬇️

DebinHawaii …good. There is only one knock to Nancy‘s noggin from a cookie tin, involving a goat but it doesn‘t seem concussion-worthy so I‘m not sure whether we should add it to the Nancy Noggin Knockout counter or #NNK 🤷🏻‍♀️ but feel free to vote here in you think it should be included. 😉

Book #12 in the ND series did not disappoint, though get ready to suspend your disbelief. When NYC detectives can't find treasure missing in a hollow oak in Illinois buried by a missionary, Nancy is given the case due to her aunt knowing one of the detectives. If you've ever heard the words “Indian burial ground“, then you get the idea. Only one #nogginknockout for Nancy that I found, and that was due to a goat's passion for cookies. #NancyDrewBR

Librarybelle You gotta love a goat passionate for cookies! 😂 2mo

Spending my #HyggeHour with Nancy Drew for #NancyDrewBR along with some dark chocolate mints.

My mood is happy that I have an extra day off tomorrow & that the book cover goes well with my blanket.💀

#weekendreads

A bunch of library ebook holds came in today and instead of postponing a few, I downloaded them all (cue nervous laughter). 🤭 still plugging away at Sundiver for #ClassicLSFBC and The Message in the Hollow Oak is for #NancyDrewBR this month.

sarahbarnes The same thing happened to me! 📚 2mo
Ruthiella @sarahbarnes a classic library patron dilemma! 😆 2mo
BarbaraJean 😂Library holds are one of the reasons I‘m in the middle of nine books right now 🫣 2mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraJean The pressure is real. 😂 (edited) 2mo

#LittenDetectives : 2 weeks until our next #NancyDrewBR discussion! What will Nancy find in the hollow oak? Whether in Canada or at a dig site in the states, you just know Nancy will run into trouble (and possible head ouchies).

Discussion on the 15th!

DGRachel Have to buy this one - my library doesn‘t even have a copy at all! 2mo
Librarybelle @DGRachel I better check my library! 2mo
Ruthiella Awesome! Looking forward to Nancy‘s next adventure. 2mo

Starting my #nancydrewbr book today as well, likely reading 2-3 chapters a day

Librarybelle Yay!! 2mo
Ruthiella That‘s a very different coverage from the ebook I have from the library. I like Nancy‘s outfit, though! 2mo
Bookwormjillk That‘s the cover I have too. Really digging the snazzy pant suit. Perfect for lunch with the girls or solving mysteries. 2mo

October's book also features very different storylines:
1935-Nancy gets a piece of land in Canada!
1972-NYC detectives ask for Nancy's help that leads her to a dig site in Illinois.
Discussion on October 15th!
All are welcome to join.

TheAromaofBooks Good grief, those don't even sound like the same stories! 😂 2mo
Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks I know! At least both involve a hollow oak somehow. 😂 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I just finished reading the discussion questions for the Broken Locket, and can't believe how different those editions were as well! Apparently the “update“ instructions were just... find a way to tie-in with the original title! 😂 2mo
jlhammar I don‘t have this one, but I think I have 13 & 14 so might jump back in Nov & Dec. 2mo

Loved this Nancy Drew mystery story. Such an unusual premise for a great tale.

An interesting case involving an old riddle, a missing treasure, and a criminal who will stop at nothing to have it.

I loved learning that whirlybird was apparently slang for helicopters when this book was written. How cute is that?! Of course, reflecting the time period, super problematic handling of Native American/American Indian burial grounds in an anthropological dig, but that‘s to be expected.

WTH??? Your killing off Nancy Drew!!!???

NataliePatalie This happened in the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys comic I started reading but I haven't gotten to this part yet. I have a theory about how the story will play out which will end in her not being dead. Either way though it's a stupid way to "celebrate." 5y
rubyslippersreads Maybe they‘ll introduce “Baby Nancy” the way they did with Mr. Peanut. 😏 5y
