Soft pick, but I would've loved this a couple of years ago during my zombie phase. I still can't believe that this is a zombie book. But it totally is and it's well done. I felt emotional more than expected, and loved seeing Melanie grow. Carey talks about some existential questions in this book, and we might be closer to experience something similar than we want to admit. What will become of us humans? Where are we going from here?

I enjoyed this book, which I didn‘t know was a zombie book. It definitely had some I Am Legend vibes but for a new generation.
Melanie and some not so great adults try to make it to Beacon, a city of humans where Melanie might not be welcome but where she might save countless lives.
3/5 I really liked this book until the end - which I I thought was a good ending to the story but was not well explained nor well described.

AmyG I have this book and had no clue it was a zombie story. 7mo
Powered_By_Plants Yes I had the same experience , I also have ‘boy on the bridge‘ sitting on the shelf still to be read , can‘t remember if it‘s a sequel or prequel 😊 7mo
CatLass007 @AmyG @Powered_By_Plants I read Mike Carey‘s Felix Castor series, which was a horror/fantasy thing. I thought it was excellent. This book is on my wish list but I didn‘t know it was a zombie story. I may have to rethink whether I want to read it or not. Fantastical creatures I am fine with, but zombies are just not my thing. 7mo

iread2much @AmyG it‘s a zombie book more in the style of The Last of Us than say 30 days later. The Last of Us part 1 (video game) came out before this book, but I think the TV show was really inspired by this book. It‘s a good read, I couldn‘t put it down, but the ending is not well done. I hope that‘s helpful! 7mo
iread2much @Powered_By_Plants given the ending, I don‘t know if I‘ll ever read The Boy on the Bridge, but I‘m glad I read this one. 😊 7mo
iread2much @CatLass007 it‘s not super scary zombies, if that‘s helpful. It‘s more focused on the experiences of Melanie, the little girl 7mo
iread2much @TheLudicReader I probably should have read it long ago! But it‘s actually better for me to have read it now I think, as I had to stop reading Zombies during COVID, they were too much. It‘s nice to be able to read Zombie books again. 7mo

CatLass007 Thank you for letting me know. I‘ll leave it on my list then. 7mo
iread2much @CatLass007 you are welcome 🤗 I hope you enjoy it if you read it! 7mo

Holy Moly! As a teacher and a lover of humanity; a fan of a great imagination and story, this book brought it all to me in a heartfelt story of survival in a zombie apocalypse. This is NOT your normal zombie book. It's fascinatingly horrible and heartwarming all at once, this is a unique book. I could not put it down.

Melanie is ten years old and lives in a cell. Monday to Friday she is strapped into a wheelchair and is wheeled into class where she learns about Greek mythology, has story time and bonds with her classmates. Saturdays she is confined to her cell all day and Sundays she is strapped into her wheelchair for shower time and is fed grubs. This is Melanie's whole world.

I enjoyed this book so much, it gave me all the feels.

I thought this book was excellent but I don‘t know if I can handle the movie. And now I‘m wondering if I should read the second book...

abookishbutterfly The movie was decent, but I definitely preferred the book. I just didn‘t feel the movie had the same depth and Melanie wasn‘t developed in quite the same way, which was the thing that made her so easy to fall in love with in the book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really liked the beginning and end of this book. It started off really strong and had me really intrigued and excited to learn more about the apocalyptic world of the book. But then it became a “road novel” which makes my eyes glaze over a lot of the time. But the end was worth the journey. And it‘s a quick read. This was my #bookspin book. Still need to read the doublespin book and then work through my bingo board!
