Girl with All the Gifts
Girl with All the Gifts | M R Carey
The "USA Today" bestsellerMelanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius." Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. "The Girl With All the Gifts" is a groundbreaking thriller, emotionally charged and gripping from beginning to end.

Loved this book. Great beginning and setting up of the story and from around 100 pages in this story takes off like a freight train ! I surprised myself and absolutely loved it.

Finished this right around midnight bringing my book total this year to 30. My goal had been 18 because last year Reading wasn‘t great so I wanted something doable. This is the most I‘ve read in a year in adulthood! Haven‘t decided what the goal will be for next year, want it attainable but also want to push myself. How do you pick your goal number?

I didn‘t do it 👎🏻 I‘ll probably finish the tagged book by Tuesday and officially be halfway done.... but oof, what a year. I hope I find the time again next year to indulge in my favorite hobby.

And...I honestly blame Paul Tremblay 😂 I read Head Full of Ghosts at the end of 2018 and STRUGGLED to find a fix better than that read (I know there is better/equal...but it did something to me mentally.... It broke me 😭)

Reviewsbylola I‘m not going to make my goal either. Here‘s to a fresh start in 2020! 🥂 1mo
Amiable Reading is the goal — the totals are not important! You done good. 👍🏼 1mo

Stephuhhnieee @Amiable @TrishB @Reviewsbylola Thanks 😊😊 honestly just trying to get through my tbr in this lifetime and this number won‘t cut it 😂🤣 1mo
Amiable @Stephuhhnieee Here‘s the stark reality: You will never reach the end of your TBR. Because as fast as you finish books off it there will always be new ones to take their place! So like @trishb says, just enjoy the ride —and the reading! 🙂 (edited) 1mo
TrishB I don‘t even day dream about getting through my tbr! But love it anyway ❤️ 1mo
RvnclawWhovian I had the same goal and will finish about the same as you. I had the opposite problem though lol. I started the Night Circus in December and didn‘t finish it until almost February, I really should have bailed. I was bummed about not reaching my goal but ya know what? Reading that much is still a great number. Like @Amiable said, reading is the goal. 1mo

Really enjoyed this one! It‘s a very original take on the zombie genre, and really forces you to think morally and philosophically about the ramifications of the events. Manages to maintain a cinematic feel throughout, though. Overall 4/5, would definitely recommend!

I finally have a day to just (sort of) sit in a comfy chair and indulge in a book and a show. Unfortunately, it is because my little one has food poisoning... but she is finally asleep after a rough night; so my coffee, my book and I are on watch.

This was an interesting take on the typical zombie apocalypse—definitely not an ending I saw coming but plays well in terms of how nature really works. It was okay, but I probably won‘t be looking for the sequel...

One of the better zombie books out there. I also watched the movie. No surprise that the book is better. The film retained most of the flavor or the book, but none of the richness. Like fat-free dairy.

I thought this was an interesting take on a perhaps not so new sci-fi idea. I liked Melanie, the “gifted” girl and I found the philosophical question of the lengths one might go to in order to save the world interesting. However, I think there were a few logic errors when it came to the science of how the fungus worked which ultimately kept the book from being being a great read for me. Suspenseful in places but dragged a bit in others. 4⭐️ #2019

This is one of my favorite books, so I had high hopes for the film adaptation. Sadly, I thought it was one of the worst adaptations I‘d ever seen. Now I‘m going to have to read this again to wipe all traces of the film from my mind.

What a fantastic novel!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Although the story is quite heartbreaking, there's a glimmer of happiness and hope for the second generation and the possibility of a brand new world!

I really loved how M.R. Carey portrayed the virus and how it takes over, it had a very realistic outlook which could even make it seem possible.

On a different note, i was just beginning to like Sergeant Parks then his part in the story came to an end.. Gutted.

A pretty darn good book about a zombie apocalypse with it's own take on what survival means and what humanity is willing to do for it. Melanie and Parks were the real stand out characters which made the ending sorta...bad? Squidapus thought throughout that the book steered away from Blockbuster Movie writing and had deep characterization which it then threw away at the end to make each character fulfill their zombie movie trope. Still worth a read

Clare-Dragonfly That‘s a great description! I hate zombie movies which I guess is why I gave this a worse rating. 9mo
Squidapus @Clare-Dragonfly Squidapus neither loves nor hates them but finds you can often predict a character's fate in movies/books like this because they rarely play away from the tropes. This book did a good job of it up until Melanie finds THOSE people and then it literally turned into a zombie movie mad lib. 9mo

In true #blameitonlitsy fashion, I borrowed this #audiobook because I‘d seen it in my Litsy feed several times. I had no idea what it was about. So now it‘s official: I have survived my first (and hopefully last) zombie apocalypse! Thankfully, it was fictional. Not really my fare, but the author took an interesting look at what it means to be human, at the power of education, and at an alternative evolutionary step into the future.

CocoReads Yeah, zombies aren‘t my thing either but I did enjoy the book. Haven‘t had any desire to read any more of them though. 😁 9mo
Louise @CocoReads Exactly! 😆 The interactions between the characters and the philosophical questions were interesting, but I could have done without the feeding frenzies on human flesh! 😳 9mo

Louise @nosferatoos I felt the same way for a lot of it and nearly bailed but figured I‘d see it through to see how the author handled some of the themes. Still, I wouldn‘t recommend it to anyone who isn‘t a fan of zombie stories. 9mo
Geeklet I really enjoyed it but I love zombie stories, lol. If you want the story without reading the book, the movie is on Amazon Prime. From what I remember, it generally follows the book pretty well. The sequel to this book is pretty meh though. 9mo
Louise @Geeklet If I may ask: What is it about zombie apocalypse stories that you love? I‘m really curious because it‘s such an “alien” genre to me. Thanks! 9mo
Geeklet @Louise I think it‘s just a general interest in apocalyptic stories. I was also raised around older teenage boys so horror movies and such have always been a big part of my life. Weirdly enough, I don‘t like vampire stories. 9mo
Louise @Geeklet Thanks. Yes, I know from experience that the influence of older brothers is strong! 9mo

Not sure I would have picked this up if it wasn‘t a book club read. I ended up enjoying it more than I though I would.
