Child 44
Child 44 | Tom Rob Smith
Now a major movie, directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman. For fans of Robert Harris, John Le Carre and Martin Cruz Smith comes a gripping thriller set in Moscow, 1953. Under Stalin's terrifying regime families live in fear. When the all-powerful State claims there is no such thing as crime, who dares disagree? An ambitious secret police officer, Leo Demidov has spent his career arresting anyone who steps out of line. Suddenly his world is turned upside down when he uncovers evidence of a killer at large. Now, with only his wife at his side, Leo must risk both their lives to save the lives of others. Inspired by a real-life investigation, Child 44is a relentless story of love, hope and bravery in a totalitarian world. It is a thriller unlike any you have ever read.

Such a strange book! This might be the first thriller novel set in the Soviet union that I've ever read. I'm not totally sure how I feel about the story. Some parts I liked some parts I wasn't too crazy about. 🤔

I think I‘m one of the few who don‘t like this book, but I was honestly bored. For a thriller, I didn‘t find it very thrilling, nor did I care about or like the main character. Not for me!

This book is actually my #bookspin #doublespin. (I loaned my book spin selection to my aunt. Duh.) Child 44 has been on my tbr shelf forEVER. I have mixed feelings about this one. It‘s a thriller set in Stalin‘s Russia. Lots of Russian names & backstory. When it was thrilling, it truly was. It was also frustrating & dragged in some spots. Apparently it‘s book one of a series, although I likely will not carry on. #covid19readathon

I just finished the book and then watched the movie. A great book about the investigation into a serial killer in 1953 Moscow, when murders were covered up by the state and blamed on the less "desirables" of that time. The movie added some visuals to the story but so much was left out, as is usually the case with the movie vs.book. I would give both ??

TEArificbooks But Tom Hardy🥰 5y
KathyWheeler Excellent book and movie. Did you see Citizen X, which is about the same case? It‘s good too. 5y

It's a serial killer's dream to murder in a country that doesn't acknowledge any criminal activity and does everything to blame obviously connected murders on invalids, drunks or enemies of the Party.
An interesting and well-constructed book; although I'm not sure I'll read the next one in the series.

Book 5 of 2019, and what a book! Full of drama, intrigue, and suspense, we follow Leo as he tries to catch a child killer that his own government denies exists.
Well-written, great character development, would definitely recommend. And I've just learned it part of a series - woohoo!

Day 12 #adventrecommends @emilyrose_x

This first book is a great murder mystery wrapped up in Soviet life and the pressures of living in a communist state. The characters are very real and it was because of them that I read the other books which are equally brilliant. Read the book DON'T see the film despite it having Tom Hardy & Gary Oldman as the leads

Welcome to Stalin's Russia. This is a slow burner for thriller but actually it worked very well. It's quite action packed but it just quite slow to start with. I enjoyed reading about the regime and life under Stalin rather than the actual plot lines itself. An interesting read of an interesting time.

Stalin‘s Soviet Union is “officially”free from crime, but the citizens live in fear of the all powerful State and the MGB. But when a serial killer of children is discovered, Leo Demidov, a high ranking MGB officer loses everything to find who‘s responsible. Chilling, exciting, turbo charged. Couldn‘t put it down! Based on a real life criminal, Andrei Chikatilo (pictured).

Child 44 is a murder mystery set in Stalinist Russia. More importantly, it's a story that teaches the reader what it was like in a hopeless, paranoid, deluded state-run society. It's an amazing book, and hard to believe, it's the author's first.
