Sleep No More
Sleep No More: Six Murderous Tales | P. D. James
42 posts | 26 read | 36 to read
No one gets inside the head of the murdereror makes it a more thrilling readthan the late, great P. D. James. Fast on the heels of her latest best seller: a new, fiendishly entertaining gathering of previously uncollected stories, from the author of Death Comes to Pemberley and The Private Patient. It's not always a question of "whodunit?" Sometimes there's more mystery in the why or how. And although we usually know the unhealthy fates of both victim and perpetrator, what of those clever few who plan and carry out the perfect crime? The ones who aren't brought down even though they're found out? And what about those who do the finding out who witness a murder or who identify the murderer but keep the information to themselves? These are some of the mysteries that we follow through those six stories as we are drawn into the thinking, the memories, the emotional machinations, the rationalizations, the dreams and desires behind murderous cause and effect.

This collection suffers a little in the compilation, I think. By the end, they seemed like the same story with just some details being changed. It also leads me to believe that everyone in England hates each other. I‘m giving it a pick for the craft, but maybe leave some reading time between stories. In any event, it‘s back in the LFL.

Meanwhile, I‘ve finished one lonely Real Simple issue so far this month.

This was a recommendation by @vivastory and it didn‘t disappoint. Six short and to the point murder stories. Some about who did it, often why or how the murderer did it. Packed in those typical English murder setting, this is a fun and entertaining collection.

Librarybelle I really need to read more P D James books! 3mo

Hooked_on_books Nice! I‘ll have to keep this one in mind for this prompt. 3mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle I had never read her before but now I want to read more! 3mo
BarbaraBB @brittanyreads There is a scene in which a girl takes her old but otherwise healthy cat to the vet and asks him to put the cat asleep. The narrator leaves shortly after - the reader doesn‘t know if the vet obeys. I hope this is of help! 3mo
BarbaraBB @RaeLovesToRead Thanks! It‘s by Gregory Crewdson, an American photographer I like a lot. All his photos are staged and really strange 3mo
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books Not all stories are about revenge but enough to fit the prompt I think 🙂 3mo
brittanyreads Thanks! That helps a lot! 3mo
vivastory I'm glad that you liked this one! I hope to read more PD James in the upcoming months. 3mo
batsy I should read this! I really enjoyed this collection 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 3mo
vivastory @batsy I love that one too. Have you read Ruth Rendell by chance? I have a volume of her short stories that I plan on reading soon. 3mo
batsy @vivastory No, not yet! I have Rendell and PD James as two to discover soon as together they seem to constitute a big gap in my mystery reading lol. Plus Elizabeth George! 3mo
vivastory @batsy It seems like the two of them have somewhat similar vibes. I haven't read Elizabeth George either. 3mo

I meant to use this for yesterday's prompt, but it somehow slipped my mind. As I mentioned in my review of Horowitz's The Word is Murder, I loved James' Sleep No more. I also love peppermint. One of my fave wintry adult drinks is Rumchata Peppermint Bark. Released a little over a month ago I ran to my local liquor store & picked up a couple of bottles with the distinctive #red design for the long winter ahead. One of the final stories in👇

vivastory James' memorable collection involves peppermint & that one piece alone would make the book worth reading, yet the rest is also fantastic. #wishesandblessings @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @eggs 2y
Eggs Great post!! Rumchata sounds delish ❤️🤍❤️ 2y
Megabooks While I don‘t drink alcohol, I am crazy about peppermint ice cream, especially Blue Bell‘s version. The best I‘ve had is a local shop in Sarasota, FL, but I live far away! 2y

vivastory @Megabooks IMO peppermint ice cream should be sold year round. Not just seasonally. 2y

3) Tana French's The Likeness & Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca.

vivastory @LeahBergen That must have been incredible! I imagine you have seen a lot of incredible authors. Do you have any favorites? 2y
vivastory @Bklover They're the best 💙 2y
LeahBergen Of the authors I‘ve seen? Hmm… I once went to a David Sedaris reading here during Stanley Cup season when our hockey team was doing really well. It was spontaneously planned, held in the corner of a local bookshop, and about 12 people showed up. He thanked us for coming out to see him on such an important night. 🤣🤣 2y
LeahBergen I‘ve seen Margaret Atwood numerous times since the ‘90s and she‘s always brilliant. It‘s not always the big names, though; I saw Sarah Waters on one of her first book tours (for Fingersmith) and have loved her ever since. 😊 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen Sedaris has been here numerous times & I always mean to go but haven't. All of the stories that I've heard about him I know it'd be a blast. I would love to see Atwood. Sarah Waters would likewise be incredible. I miss live readings so much. 2y

Masterful. Brilliant from the first word to the last. Shocking. Witty. Sly. Dangerous. Surprising. Each story better than the last. This collection of short stories is ALL those things & more. James plumbs the depths of love, revenge, betrayal, & greed—humans at their worst on full display & it‘s delicious & delightful. I can‘t recommend this book enough especially if you like your holidays/family gatherings/life with a side of murder & mayhem.

When life gifts you a 47 degree day in December, you go for a three mile walk & then treat yourself to an espresso, chocolate & a murderous tale or two or six. Not even overcast skies can dampen such a morning! I absolutely love P. D. James & am excited to read some of her short stories. For anyone looking for seasonal reading, two of the stories take place around Christmas—one is even titled ‘The Murder of Santa Claus.‘ 😮 Time to read...

Somewhere between a pick and so-so, these 6 short stories, while interesting and an easy read, aren‘t quite at the level of PD James series mysteries. Of course, it‘s difficult in a short story to do what James is really good at, which is developing characters and plots. All of these stories have an interesting commonality - but I don‘t want to spoil the stories. Fans of traditional mysteries should enjoy. 3.5/5.0⭐️ #2019

Thanks to my darling daughter for the Jolabokaflod books! I adore this short story collection so much! I discovered PD James fairly recently and have liked her detective series. But oh my I loooved her writing in this book of shorts. I especially recommend "The Girl Who Loved Graveyards." The prose is hauntingly beautiful and the story leaves you a little gutted but slightly terrified. 10/10 recommend.

TiaQueso @Mshookquilts haha... yah but not because I actually have more time 😬😬😬. This week‘s power hour took 3 hours instead of 1. Such a great collection of mystery stories! They were a delight to read each night. Lately I‘ve been more and more drawn to mysteries where the focus isn‘t on who the murderer is, but on why and the events leading up to justice (or not, in some cases). These fit that category perfectly! 🔦🔦🔦🔦
