Would you believe the day started with rain and fog ?
Enjoying the fair weather now and the kettle in every hotel room in Ireland
Just started reading this on my Twitch channel. Glad I read it before starting, I needed to remove some blink-and-you'll-miss-it racism that could be excised without harm to the book. I think it would be creepier reading it in the Victorian era, but on the other hand, there is absolutely no subtlety about the lesbian relationship. It's not coded at all, it's just right there on the page. As I told my chat, “yes, this is a kissing book!“ 😆
I LOVE vampires - for the #scarathlonphotochallenge today it was hard to choose a favourite vampire book because I love so many but this is one of my absolute faves. #scarathlon #skeletoncrew
When the charming young lady Laura & her father take in after a carriage accident turns out to be not who she says she is, things take a dangerous turn.
An excellent dramatization, with David Tennant! A vampire story older than Dracula by 25 years, with some insidious gothic horror & the villainization of female sexuality & queerness. I do need to search out a print copy now though. I hadn‘t realized this was an adaptation. 😅 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I'm enjoying reading this for the first time ever alongside Dracula on my Kindle!
Fascinating! Published in 1872 Carmilla is an early example of a vampire story and pretty explicitly queer! I'm so glad I read the version edited and with a foreword by Carmen Maria Machado, who explained the author copied whole letters from an actual woman to a doctor about a lesbian affair, changing the woman into an evil vampire! A quick and surprisingly easy read, so if you're at all interested in queer lady vampires, I def recommend!
#ScarathlonDailyPrompts #PhotoChallenge Day 8: #Vampire. The original vampire story! I still need to read this. 🤦🏽♀️ 🧛🏽♀️

I started this on audio but couldn‘t focus on it so I switched to a print version. I noticed changes between the two versions and learned that the audible version is actually an adaptation by a playwright even though only the original author is credited on the cover. Once I switched to the print version I was immediately absorbed in the story. The original is a very compelling piece of vampire lore.
I really enjoyed it! #scarathlon22 #challenge
The narration! 🙌🔥🔥🌈❤️
What are you up to?!

About to start this one on audio. Not the oldest #vampire story we have, but it predates Dracula by 25 years. #Scarathlon2022 #ScarathlonDailyPrompt #TeamMonsterMash @StayCurious @Clwojick
A great Gothic horror short story/novella
I actually forgot this was my September #DoubleSpin I just felt like reading it today 😂 This audible edition is nice and creepy. Also I haven‘t done a #BookMusicPairing in a minute but this one goes nicely 🧛🏻♀️🧛🏻♀️ you can listen here https://youtu.be/WLHiYuUnke8
From these foolish embraces, which were not of very frequent occurrence, I must allow, I used to wish to extricate myself; but my energies seemed to fail me. Her murmured words sounded like a lullaby in my ear, and soothed my resistance into a trance, from which I only seemed to recover myself when she withdrew her arms.
Spending the evening reading the tagged book in bed in honour of @sharread for her memorial readathon. Amazing how we could be linked by our love of reading even though I think we lived thousands of miles apart.
Rest in peace 💙

As one of the oldest vampire fictions, this novella predates Dracula! Hugely gothic, with a picturesque and isolated setting, Carmilla describes a surprisingly sapphic central relationship. Though there are precious few frightful scenes, they lit up my imagination like a cat‘s eye in the dark. Not a mystery, as any modern reader will understand what‘s happening from the start, so just come for the fun. (I read this aloud, and we had so much fun.)
Making more progress on my #Bingo card by finishing the tagged classic for a book club. I actually enjoyed this short vampire story.

Having a lovely time reading this, and the illustrations in this edition really bring it to life. I'm also enjoying the introduction and commentary by Carmen Maria Machado. I might have to read some of her work next!
I love buying second hand books that people have written notes in, I‘m always interested in different perspectives of a story. Do you like this or does it annoy you?
Enthralling sapphic vampire tale! I couldn't believe how queer coded it was for 1872, seriously. Loved it.
Found this short novella on @SerialReader while looking for #gothichorror #booked2020 - I enjoyed it! A lonely young woman is delighted when, after a carriage accident, a beautiful stranger is invited to stay & recuperate. But is she who she seems? Meanwhile a mysterious illness is killing off local villagers.
It may have felt a little predictable, but written 25 years before Dracula that probably says more about later novels. Worth a read!
Came across this book cover while i was looking online for something (i forget what it was). I love love love this cover. I have no idea what this book is about ! haha

Finishing up my #owlsreadathon2020 book for potions. I have really enjoyed this book. I'm actually not a huge Dracula fan so I wasn't really sure how I'd feel about Carmilla... I really like it! It's very short, so it doesn't drag like I feel Dracula does at times. And Carmilla is definitely a better vampire, IMO

My new book review on "Carmilla" by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu is up a day early!
Check this video out to see drunken shenanigans and hear about lesbian vampires!

Written decades before Stoker‘s Dracula, I am as astounded as I was in reading Stoker at how modern the story feels. Equally surprising is the erotic nature of the tale and I wonder if reading it rather than listening to the narrators‘ breathless rendition would feel different. Dracula is better but this one is good too and puts a new light on Stoker‘s work. #tbrread

This book was published in 1872 and is said to be the book that later inspired Dracula, it was brought to my attention by a fellow book dragon Salema and I couldn't wait to read it.

This was a great audio book. It would have been a good read, but the stellar voice cast really brought it to life (or death). This audio version definitely did the original vampire novel justice.
I can‘t with this Audible freebie. I picked it because David Tennant, but I‘m not into erotica. I know others may love it. It‘s just not my thang.
I loooooved this book! So creepy and gothic and the performance was phenomenal! Definitely a new favorite. 🥀

I loved that this had a female vampire, Carmilla. It was written in 1872 and predates Dracula. Thanks to all the Littens that posted about this one.
I listened to the audio version, which is a free choice this month on audible. Great recording!

Started this yesterday! This was one of the free Audible originals for October. An appropriate companion to the #DraculaBuddyRead. It‘s also short so I should be able to finish it up today 🧛🏻♀️

Great audio narration for this short vampire story. 🧛🏻♀️
An excellent production of a so-so novella that predates Dracula. I am giving this a borderline pick as I enjoyed the plot and a lot of the gothic feel but not as much the melodramatic writing. A nice quick listen though! #horror #Scarathlon #TeamStoker 3 points!

This vampire story predates Dracula by 26 yrs. Not a huge fan of gothic horror, but I actually enjoyed this short story. #teamstoker #scarathlon @TheReadingMermaid
