Night Watch | Sarah Waters
[A] wonderful novel Waters is almost Dickensian in her wealth of description and depth of character. "Chicago Tribune" Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, "The Night Watch" tells the story of four Londoners three women and a young man with a past whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event."

Soft pick. I really like the writing style where the story works backwards 3 parts - 1947, 1944, 1941. This allows reader to both realize how things got to where they were in the future (earlier) chapters and also have a strange sense of retroactive anxiety for what you know is coming.
I wish the overall story was more entertaining, I was a bit bored, Sarah Waters has a writing style that can only be described as overwritten

One of the characters mentions that people‘s pasts are more interesting than their futures, and this book is told with that in mind, introducing the characters after World War II and telling their stories in reverse. I had mixed feelings about this format, but Waters‘ writing is, as always, in top form, her many characters and often bombed late-war London are brought vividly to life.

Mitch @Soubhiville @bookzombie @quietjenn It was good - they dealt with the wonky timeline well and the set was incredibly atmospheric of post war London. I didn't love it - and if I hadn't of read the book, not sure it would have been as good. Waters books are so great at building layer upon layer of character - you get to know each person intimately - that didn't translate well to the stage. But a fun afternoon! 5y

“The Night Watch” is the third Sarah Waters book I‘ve read. I didn‘t enjoy it as much as the previous two and didn‘t feel such strong connections with these characters, but don‘t let that put you off, Waters is an amazing writer I‘d highly recommend.

Pains me to give a Waters bk less than 4 stars. Unclear why she told it in reverse, didn‘t seem necessary & left me unsure about what had happened for the chars. Also had hard time keeping relationships clear & didn‘t care abt Duncan. Maybe I‘m a cranky queer bitch but would‘ve liked just the women, maybe just K & H. Still loved the writing & queer rep & the experiences of women during wartime was poignant, but overall my least fave of hers 3/5 ⭐️

Another wonderful novel by Sarah Waters. I will admit it wasn‘t my favorite by her but I think that‘s due to my own personal idiosyncrasies. The novel has an interesting backward time line structure that isn‘t usual of her writing. However, as usual there are twists and the character‘s timelines intertwine in that unique way she does. As always, Historically accurate and a great view into being LGBTQ in a different time period.

This uniquely structured novel, moving backwards in time, follows the lives of four Londoners as they endure the blitz of the 1940s. Waters nails the tricky timeline and provides in depth character studies for each of the characters as you get to slowly see how and why their lives take a turn after the war, for better or worse.

During the WW2, London was bombed by the Nazis for 76 consecutive nights, known as ‘the Blitz‘. Those who survived watched for the bombs that would start to fall just after dark. Hence the source of the title. The bombing raids impact all the characters in the story, one way or another.
