I finished 9 total books in June, including my #DoubleSpin All‘s Well. I was not enjoying my #BookSpin (tagged), so I DNF‘d at 6%. I might pick it up again someday, but I couldn‘t get into it, and it‘s a very long book, so I might need to be in the right mood.

I can‘t remember the last time I actually had a bingo LOL.

Serious question: does this book get better?

I am 6% in, and that much was a struggle. This is a 700+ page book, so I need to know if it‘s worth powering through. I bought it on a Kindle deal, so while I‘d like to not let it go to waste, I also wouldn‘t feel that bad about DNF‘ing if it‘s not actually worth it.

MrT Yes it‘s wordy, yes it bloody long. I got to about page 100 thinking was it worth continuing it too. It is, stick with it. 6mo
Kimberlone @MrT thank you! In your opinion what made it worth it? So far I‘m just really confused about the world building and the main character isn‘t really appealing. Is the whole book him telling the story of his life to the vampire character? (Reverse interview with a vampire?) 6mo
MrT For me, I really liked Gabriel relating his life to the vampire, and how he got up to that point. Itdoesn‘t always read that way particularly when all the other characters come into the story and for me I forgot mostly it‘s Gabriel talking. I‘m not one for first person point of view narrative, generally it‘s a total turn off but I think the plotting kept me going . There‘s plenty of action along the way with the twists and turns. 6mo
See All 8 Comments
MrT And you‘re right, Gabriel isn‘t a particularly likeable character but the reasons as to why are all there if you keep reading 6mo
Kimberlone @MrT thanks for your input! I think I will take a break and come back when I‘m more in the mood for such a dark story. Could be a “right book wrong time” situation for me. 6mo
BooksNBowls I took a break from it 50% in and never finished it so take that as it is. I might pick it back up, I might not lol I do remember what happened in it though so I guess that says something 6mo
ReadingOver50 One of my favorites. But I liked it from the start. 6mo
BookWrym I listened on audio and loved it but I was drawn in from the start enjoyed book 2 just as much now the long wait for book 3. 6mo

June #BookspinBingo board. This month‘s #Bookspin is Empire of the Vampire and #Doublespin is All‘s Well. I have a couple of longer books still in progress, so to be seen whether I am able to start and finish another really long one before the end of the month.

So far Empire is my front runner. Curious how it‘s gonna match up to the sequel this month. I pre ordered my copy and I can‘t wait. He‘s doing an author signing in Chicago this month but it‘s like on a Thursday and at 7pm and I work 3rd shift 😭😭😭 hopefully he will do one for the third book and I can go then.

Young Gabriel was so stubborn but it still felt believable. He wanted to be a hero, and I was curious to get to know why he was so different 16 years later - what had happened to him?! I loved to follow how his story started to unravel, it was all the time easier to understand him.

I love darker books and this had an amazing atmosphere.

This had some kind of ending, but more was left open than what I had expected.

1. Depends on when I am reading. If it is in the morning it is usually coffee. Otherwise it is usually water. During the colder months I like hot chocolate or hot cider.

2. I just finished the tagged book this morning between rounds of shoveling my driveway. Now onto a new book during this somewhat lazy snowday.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

TheSpineView I hate shoveling. Snow is a four letter word. 😂 11mo

Audio was probably not the best format for this for me, it‘s told through an interview & there are time jumps back &forth.
But, it was really good, like a cross between Anne Rice (atmospheric, ancient vampires) & “The Witcher” (he‘s a 10 but his best friend is a horse)

It is a big book but I didn‘t feel it. It was a page turner for me. I liked the story, the characters, the plot and the twists. It also has beautiful illustrations. Ready for book 2 it is supposed to be an adult high fantasy but in some areas it has some YA elements?🤔 Maybe. But I enjoyed this one. I have two editions because I didn‘t want to destroy the special edition with my annotations. Not a book holder but a book collector
📚😌 4/4.3⭐️

Only a few chapters in and I'm loving it! It's as dark and horrific as I was hoping with beautiful illustrations throughout.

TLuvs My 1st book by JK and man it was like jumping into the deep end of a pool. Super immersive in character development, world building, and a brilliant start for a new trilogy! I really liked the dark atmosphere, the retelling POV, SO much action and detail, good/bad relationships, and theme of although there can be so much disparity in the world there is also still hope/belief. I have always said I do not like fantasy but I may have to amend that opinion because I really enjoyed this epic tale of Gabriel, a silversaint whose mission it is to defend against the vampires who are taking over the world. It‘s part LotR, part GoT, part BtVS and all (700+ pages) awesome. I never read series, but I will definitely finish this one.

The MC, Gabriel, tells the story via interview with his captor but it‘s done in an immersive way.

When the MC discovers he‘s half vampire, he‘s taken by the Holy Order to train to kill vampires. I pictured Gabriel as the Witcher, a dark broody character.

Plenty of action, blood, gore, and a touch of romance. Great world building and stunning artwork throughout.
