Ultra-Processed People
Ultra-Processed People: Why Do We All Eat Stuff That Isnt Food ... and Why Cant We Stop? | Chris van Tulleken
THE NUMBER ONE SUNDAY TIMES BESTESLLER 'If you only read one diet or nutrition book in your life, make it this one' Bee Wilson 'A devastating, witty and scholarly destruction of the shit food we eat and why' Adam Rutherford --- An eye-opening investigation into the science, economics, history and production of ultra-processed food. It's not you, it's the food. We have entered a new 'age of eating' where most of our calories come from an entirely novel set of substances called Ultra-Processed Food, food which is industrially processed and designed and marketed to be addictive. But do we really know what it's doing to our bodies? Join Chris in his travels through the world of food science and a UPF diet to discover what's really going on. Find out why exercise and willpower can't save us, and what UPF is really doing to our bodies, our health, our weight, and the planet (hint: nothing good). For too long we've been told we just need to make different choices, when really we're living in a food environment that makes it nigh-on impossible. So this is a book about our rights. The right to know what we eat and what it does to our bodies and the right to good, affordable food.

“It‘s not food. It‘s an industrially produced edible substance.”
Every so often a book comes along which stays with you long after you‘ve read it. For me this is one of those books. Just looking through a food product‘s ingredients list and feeling empowered to know what specific chemicals could be doing to my body is life changing. I am going to be thinking about a lot of this book for a long time to come.

ChaoticMissAdventures I think empowering is a great word for this book. I love how he framed things and I never felt like I was being shamed for my choices. It was a book that made me really mad though! 4w
Mrs_B @ChaoticMissAdventures I understand! I‘m absolutely incredulous that this just isn‘t common knowledge and how much he has had to dig to find things out. 4w
ChaoticMissAdventures @Mrs_B for sure so much of it feels like common sense after he goes through it, and also like "of course companies hide this as much as possible". The baby formula chapter - I knew about but didn't KNOW about it and it made me so angry. 4w
Mrs_B @ChaoticMissAdventures for me it was the revelation of how much “food science/research” is “funded” by coca-cola. 4w

This books is seriously challenging everything I thought I know about diet.

I‘m learning a lot reading this book, and think this paragraph really helps to distinguish UPF(NOVA) vs nutritional classification.

I am worried that a lot of the implied good vs bad will only be accessible to higher income households.

ChaoticMissAdventures I thought this was so well done. I think he addressed income issues at some point? I remember it being really constructive. 1mo

This is an incredible read about why ultra-processed food is so damaging to our health and society at large. Amazing research to back up the author's claims. Highly recommend if you're interested in learning more about health.

I didn‘t think I was going to get through this book this weekend, but I‘m knocking things off the to do list. This is a well researched, comprehensive, non-judgmental, eye opening look at ultra processed food and the ramifications of it playing a big role in our diet. I appreciate the inclusion of the UK, USA and Canada in his research

Super Bowl Sunday #gotaylorsboyfriend my doughnut was made by a local whole grain bakery so in this one instance I‘ve avoided UPF 👏🏻👏🏻 to quote Graham Norton “if anyone is going to have an army, it might as well be Taylor Swift. She uses her power for good” 😊 if I had young daughters I‘d have no issues with them being a Swiftie

marleed Kanzazzzzz City. Now, I hope she shows up for the parade on Wednesday! (It will be the first of 3 in above freezing temps!) Taylor has generated so much money for this city since the night she first turned a friendship bracelet from Travis. Even local artisans are having a heyday. Go Team Taylor! 9mo
mcctrish @marleed I know she has a concert in Melbourne on Friday so 🤷🏻‍♀️ but she does work miracles with the traveling 9mo
marleed @mcctrish Yea, I think she‘ll have to skip this drunken mayhem. The real question might be when does Travis get to Melbourne! ❤️❤️❤️ 9mo

Im so glad I read/listened to this book. I thought it had several interesting parts i had not heard about such as the experiment in the early 1900‘s with infants and toddlers and food, and the Nestle Barge in South America. But most of all it reinspired me to remember that there is a way to feel better, and that my brain and body are being hijacked by ultra capitalist companies. I love the “was this made to nourish me or make money for someone “

Bag 8 of my Family Reunion Celebration Lego set ( honestly I might not ever eat ice cream again 🤢)

ChaoticMissAdventures I read this last month and even though I "knew" I feel like I didn't know and it was such a good reminder to watch what I put in my body better. 10mo
mcctrish @ChaoticMissAdventures it is certainly a good reminder. I feel like I make a lot of food from scratch but I have gotten lazy and stopped making my own salad dressings and pasta sauce - guess what better get back on that 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures As someone who hates the kitchen, I really appreciated his no-shame approach to it all. I am child free but the chapter on formula made me the angriest. 10mo
See All 16 Comments
mcctrish @ChaoticMissAdventures I remember when I had my first baby, I nursed him and he was finally old enough ( according to all books to take one feeding by formula) He was 6 lbs at birth and a voracious and frequent eater, I was so happy for the break. He hated it. It took FOREVER to set that routine. Then we both got colds and my paediatrician said cut the bottle til he‘s better. I started crying on the spot. One bottle so I could get dinner ready 😭 10mo
Zuhkeeyah I want to read this book...but am also terrified to read this book. What food will I never look the same at again?? 10mo
Tamra I haven‘t read the book, but I think being mindful about food choices is good goal. At this point I am a tad more worried about all the microplastics we consume. By just opening a plastic bag we inhale microparticles of plastic! 10mo
Tamra As an adoptive mom, I hope the author wasn‘t bottle/formula shaming per se. Nursing isn‘t an option for everyone. 10mo
mcctrish @Zuhkeeyah so far ice cream is cementing it‘s only on special occasion status 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Tamra not at all, the author is incredible throughout about not shaming. The focus is on how terrible the companies are, how they have worked their way into remote villages and give misinformation, and push formula onto areas that may not have access to clean water then they start charging after they have established a culture. He is very open and honest about how we as consumers often cannot avoid processed food for a number of reasons. 10mo
mcctrish @Tamra 😳 plastics really should be banned. I‘m barely into the book, so far it‘s only ice cream and all the foods with carrageenan, Palm oils, and guar gum getting talked about ( there goes my cottage cheese) so far my take away is if you can‘t buy the ingredients you should limit the foods that have these things in them - that‘s just common sense imo 10mo
mcctrish @ChaoticMissAdventures I remember Nestle being in the news for the formula and bottled water debacle. They are awful! 10mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @mcctrish Nestle is a horrible company, they have taken over and drained so many natural water sources only to sell the water back in plastic to the same community. I have been boycotting them for over a decade, but like the author talks about it is really hard because they own so much you do not realize they own, like cat food and cleaning brands 10mo
Tamra @ChaoticMissAdventures that‘s reprehensible. 😢 10mo
Tamra @mcctrish it‘s extremely difficult to get away from plastics & processing. Nigh on impossible! 10mo
mcctrish @Tamra how fitting I say plastic should be banned while I build Lego 🤣🤣 I meant with food but yeah, it‘ll be hard 10mo
Tamra @mcctrish bah! 🤣 I didn‘t see that until you pointed it out! Fortunately Lego‘s are not single use! (edited) 10mo

#JumpStart2024 #ReadAway2024

Read for #Naturalitsy #MidwinterSolace it‘s a soft pick. I knew much of the info on UPFs (Ultra-Processed Foods) it was a good refresher & while I knew about Nestle‘s role in baby formula scandals, I wasn‘t as familiar with the floating junk food supermarkets they took down the Amazon River.🤦🏻‍♀️🤯🤬Still, it drug a bit with repetition, especially in the middle. But as a food & nutrition geek, I‘m glad we read ⬇️

DebinHawaii … it. It was also interesting to get the U.K. Perspective on things as most of my reading in this area has been U.S.-based authors. 10mo

daena I unfortunately need to ask to be removed. My school work is overwhelming right now. Thank you for including me, and hopefully I can jump back in at some point. 10mo
rockpools I think a lot of the final conversation about this book took place last week. However, I‘ve just finished. I am glad I read it, I find I am much more aware of ingredients, including those that are so prevalent that you don‘t even think of them as weird (maltodextrin for eg), and am trying to focus on more ‘real‘ food. HOWEVER. Lots. I think he‘s basically arguing for a shift away from the entire capitalist system, and while I don‘t necessarily 10mo
rockpools disagree, I‘m not too sure it‘s helpful from where we‘re at.

Actually, that might be my take on most of the book! I don‘t disagree (and it has improved my awareness) but I‘m not too sure how it helps. Worth reading, especially in the context of a group discussion like this.
10mo
Bookwormjillk @rockpools that‘s a good way to sum it up 10mo
AllDebooks @rockpools that's a perfect summary. I think the whole premise comes down to societal change and that's never going to happen. If we haven't fixed global food poverty by now, we never will. 10mo
AllDebooks @daena sorry to hear you're snowed under. Hope to see you back when things calm down x 10mo
AllDebooks I'm glad I read it, as it has made me rethink the whole food process. Certainly made me re-evaluate my shopping/eating habits 10mo
ElizaMarie @rockpools I agree. I feel like this helped me mostly by being more aware of things. Like you mentioned, “real food“. 10mo
ElizaMarie I am glad I read it. I don't think I “learned“ a whole bunch (as most of this stuff was either common sense - prepackaged foods aren't super healthy). I think what frustrates me the most, was I couldn't really help develop a better plan of action after reading (other than a general, more whole/raw foods, more fruits and veggies). I found the most interesting aspect of it was the reminder that packaging claims aren't really that reliable. Bummer. 10mo

It was a little long and reiterated points multiple times. However, this book made me more aware of how much UPFs have invaded the food system. If nothing else, it will make me read food labels a whole lot more and reduce my intake of fizzy drinks. The audiobook did have chatty /interview sections between the author and his brother, which helped ground the book a little. #naturalitsy

This book is about the dangers of eating ultra-processed food. I'm not sure how to feel about this book. I agree that the ulta-processed foods are unhealthy however I think most sensible people know this and what he doesn't cover is what to eat now.

DocBrown I once heard Joel Salatin say only eat it if it existed in 1900. Which means that hot dogs make the cut! 10mo
TheAromaofBooks I haven't read this one, but I am always low-key frustrated by books that spend a great deal of time telling me about a problem, but then offer me no alternatives or suggestions for what I can do to help tackle said problem. 10mo

Probably better as a podcast, with interviews from other people.
In reading this for #naturalitsy I found the author pedantic + repetitive. I liked what I did learn, but mostly feel I read padding and strident reiterations. My takeaways: avoid emulsifiers, avoid artificial flavors/smells, trust yourself to know when something's bad for you. Me? I will continue to eat my fav ketchup chips... But will also pay better attention to ingredient lists.

Librarybelle I‘ve seen a lot of mixed reviews for this one 10mo

RamsFan1963 I love Miss Vickie's chips, especially the Salt & Vinegar, but I've never seen the Sweet & Spicy Ketchup ones in my area. I'd easily eat the whole bag. It must be a Canadian only kind of flavor. 10mo

This was okay. I feel like a lot of the reasons van Tulleken shared for why we should avoid processed foods were things I was already aware of and why I try to avoid them. He did add a few more that were new to me and gave me even more motivation to cut them completely out of my diet. I tried to finish this one quickly as there were quite a few folks waiting on the library hold. #naturalitsy #BookspinBino @thearomaofbooks @alldebooks

Any thoughts on this week's section? 🤔

See All 25 Comments
TheBookHippie I finished it. Had to be back to library was only 7 day loan. But I did not learn one new thing or like the tone 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😬😵‍💫. Could be just me. Seemed all preachy with no clear path and was quite elitist in what the thought was in what we can actually control. Not everyone has time money or resources even if they wanted to adhere to eliminating types of foods. Not sure why this book rubbed me wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️. 10mo
jenniferw88 @TheBookHippie I didn't enjoy it either, although I am looking at labels more. I only learnt something in part 2 - the non-influence of sugar & exercise! 10mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I agree. He implied that he didn‘t have a moral stance on what others should do and that he understood structural inequality but neither of those things really rang true. He reiterated facts I knew and when I thought about if I could actually make changes in my life based on hearing this all again realized my circumstances don‘t allow me to. Maybe this would have been stronger if he‘d focused more on next steps in public policy. 10mo
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie @jenniferw88 I am definitely taking a different path / using a different lens i think. I‘m enjoying the book and recommending it- i do wonder how we can get out of this without advocacy- to change this. I know i was really dependent on quick meals after getting sick and blamed my weight gain on lack of movement but now wonder how much was the change in my diet too? (too significantly more processed food) 10mo
Chrissyreadit Ultimately I feel like having this reminds me why i feel so frustrated about food and that i‘m not crazy. 10mo
Chrissyreadit @IndoorDame I agree but also wonder if this is a way to identify lobbying efforts and ways to support movement in that direction. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit there is but nothings getting done in this political time. Many FDA things got gutted and have no one watching and many environmental things got cut ..So to try and get them back plus more is a big mountain. 😳😵‍💫 and not high on the list as we don‘t even control our own bodies currently. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit not crazy and the little things do make progress . More water, less processed no fast food, just keep making little simple changes. Low impact exercise, walking, etc. 10mo
BookwormAHN I've also finished it and I have mixed feelings. I agree with how bad processed food but I'm not to sure what to eat now. Also I'm feeling rather defeated on his views of exercising. 10mo
IndoorDame @BookwormAHN most of the current science is trending towards his view that exercise doesn‘t have a significant impact on weight loss, but he really failed to emphasize the other aspects of the research on exercise that show the deep degree of importance it plays in overall health and longevity 10mo
Bookwormjillk I finished too. I thought the information was important, but like a lot of you the delivery rubbed me the wrong way. I always get irritated when someone presents a lot of problems without solutions though. (edited) 10mo
JenReadsAlot @TheBookHippie I felt the same way. Did not enjoy this one. 10mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame walking is so essential as is any movement we can do. It‘s paramount to health. That got missed entirely. 10mo
TheBookHippie @JenReadsAlot it just made me angry 😂😳😬 10mo
Julsmarshall This was my least favorite section. It feels like he is too focused on his own point of view rather than holistically which feels short sighted. 10mo
Bluebird Also my least favorite section. Kinda preachy & not very helpful! I‘m with @Chrissyreadit it just reminded me why I am so frustrated about food (& not crazy) My take aways so far are the same as when I started. Do the best I can to reduce processed foods/eat fresh foods when possible. I disagree with him about weight and exercise.I think exercise is critical to health and weight control. Can‘t change the industry, but can try to make small changes 10mo
PageShifter It's comforting to read your comments. I have not read about these things before, so I liked how this book got me to think more what I am really eating. And got me to understand more what's happening in the backgroung (food industry). But I also got the feeling that this book wasn't offering solutions, and it seems I wasn't the only one thinking that. 10mo
Larkken You could really tell in this section that this started as a podcast. I agree that it was preachy and redundant. I'm with you, @jenniferw88 that it made me start looking at labels again rather than just buying the thing with the "best" health claims, so I guess there's that! 10mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie super infuriating how he only seems to be speaking to people with money/access. I'm still confused what he says the dif is between a food desert and a food swamp, but i know I've lived in a food desert and the struggle is real for people who live closer to ten fast food restaurants than to any grocery store, and he is clearly not speaking to the people without cars or who can't otherwise leave the area. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Larkken Exactly my point. He preaches something that only ppl who have money, privilege and access. 10mo
Larkken Maybe the wrong section to talk about this (I've finished and returned the book already so can't check) but I did find interesting the parts on smell and how additives esp those related to odor is hampering our natural self-selecting abilities. I've always felt really strongly that cravings should tell us something about what we need, and have had that feeling supported during pregnancy, so liked seeing some sort of science behind it. 10mo

Listening to the audio for the #naturalitsy buddy read and this comment jumped at me: “Was the food made to nourish you, or was the food made to make money for a group of people?” I know there would be nuances to this- but there can also be some clear cases of items labeled food that really should not be sold or eaten but are.

IndoorDame I thought about that idea too because most of the UPC I eat is genuinely both, but every so often I reach for something that‘s what my mother would have called junk food and those things were always only business ventures 10mo
Chrissyreadit @IndoorDame yes! And i genuinely wonder how much the change in what is eaten has impacted health in many ways- and am not disregarding the need for processing. 10mo
Kenyazero That sounds like a really solid question to ask while at the store. I‘m definitely going to hang onto that. 10mo

Tamra Great reflective question! How does the author define “ultra processed” food? 10mo
Tamra Right now I‘m also concerned about the microplastics in food, given just opening a bag distributed particles in the air & on/in food. I‘ve been reducing plastic at home for a long time, but it‘s nearly impossible at the grocery store! 10mo
Clare-Dragonfly That is an excellent question. I‘ll be pondering that one. 10mo

🥫How did you find this section?
🥫 Did you find it more political than nauseating?
🥫 Given the multitude of diet/food books available; often with conflicting advice, would you change your eating habits based on the information in this book?

📚 Don't forget to get your copies ready for February's #buddyread tagged in comments. 📚

jenniferw88 This section had the only interesting chapters for me - the sugar and exercise ones. 10mo
See All 17 Comments
IndoorDame I wouldn‘t make any drastic changes to my diet. But having been advised to cut out wheat and gluten several years ago even though I‘m not celiac, I might do a trial of adding them back in to see if it was easier to reduce UPF that way, and to see which seemed to make me feel worse… 10mo
TheSpineView I have tried to eat organic foods for a while. I am trying harder now and eating out has almost stopped. 10mo
Bookwormjillk I have been trying to cut out processed foods for a while, so I probably won‘t change the way I eat. I thought it was interesting though to learn how some of those foods are made. 10mo
BookwormAHN I've also been trying to cut down on upfs but I don't like cooking so it's not easy. And yes it was more polical than nauseating. 10mo
rockpools There were a few bits in this section that I found intriguing and/or surprising. The idea that we burn the same calories pretty much, however active we are - I mean, REALLY?? In some ways I quite like it as a theory- it means if I‘m not losing weight, the exercise is doing me good in other ways, and that‘s kind of reassuring. (And obvs, food is even more important) But it feels like it goes against everything we‘ve been taught ever. 10mo
rockpools The stuff about food poverty, and food deserts/swamps was quite tough to read - the sheer numbers (almost a million people in the uk lack a fridge, almost 2 million no cooker 🤯)! It‘s a complete tangent to the purpose of the book, but (especially after conversations about some of our young customers) I feel like I need to find out more abt food poverty locally, and what support there is. 10mo
PageShifter I maybe wouldn't change anything based on this book only, but I love how it made me to think more about several things. Yes @rockpools that was quite something :D I don't believe that's true though. I know people who run maratons and they eat a lot - still being thin. That wouldn't be possible if they really would consume the same than those who doesn't work out. 10mo
TheBookHippie I didn‘t learn anything new although I had to study this in depth when I was diagnosed with RA . Food deserts are awful, we have massive fresh foods here but they cost way too much for most ppl. I use this book for the young people I mentor https://www.amazon.com/Good-Cheap-Eat-Well-Day/dp/0761184996?nodl=1&dplnkId=4d69... it‘s good. 10mo
ElizaMarie 🥫I do like his “voice“. I am listening to the audio version, so I am enjoying hearing his voice and words and is passion re: this topic. 🥫 I was aware of the food desert concerns, and it's just sad that some of our most richest nations have such food poverty. 🥫 I have such a horrible time with diets. I struggle with my relationship with food/body/etc. I have been making small lifestyle changes to help, need to work on empty calories. 10mo
Bluebird @rockpools and @PageShifter i also took issue with his theory that we burn the same calories regardless of exercise. Evidence supports otherwise. It actually made me question all his other theories! This book hasn‘t inspired me to make lots of changes, but I‘ve always subscribed to the theory of everything in moderation and fresh foods are better whenever possible. Just do the best I can-which means I still eat a good amount processed foods. 10mo
Bluebird I agree there are concerns with ultra processing and look forward to more research. And now with the information about the prevalence of micro-plastics, which are also found to be in higher concentrations in processed foods makes it all that much worse. 🤯 10mo

I found this really eye opening and fascinating - particularly the bits about food regulation (or lack of), how and why UPF is so addictive, how some ingredients in UPF are made and what goes on without our conscious awareness really as we eat. The author states his intention in writing the book was so people can have knowledge and awareness and make their own informed decisions about what to eat. My other half is glad I‘ve finished reading it 🤣

Bookwormjillk I was trying to read this during lunch today but had to put it away for another time. 10mo

#naturalitsy The science here was sound, easy to follow and the author was occasionally amusing, but he didn‘t present any facts or ideas or draw conclusions that I wasn‘t already familiar with. I‘d recommend this for people who don‘t have much background knowledge of current nutrition science and are interested in an overview.

I struggled with this and ended up skimming a lot. Not helpful.

Tamra I think I‘ll cancel my library hold. I‘m guessing it ultimately says what we already know. (edited) 10mo
AnnR I'm listening to the audio now & pretty much having the same reaction. 10mo
IndoorDame My hold came in today on audio. I didn‘t actually learn anything in the first 2 chapters, but I found the author more amusing than I expected. Not sure if I‘ll still with it… 10mo

This was just ok. It didn‘t hold my interest. I read a book I normally wouldn‘t have picked up so I‘m happy I tried something different.

Bluebird I‘m enjoying the audiobook. The author narrates…and his enthusiasm for the subject matter adds a lot. I think I would find it a bit too dry if I was reading it. 11mo
JenReadsAlot I'm struggling with it as well 11mo
Read4life @Bluebird That‘s good to know. I had both the ebook and audiobook on hold but the audiobook is still saying it‘s a twelve week wait. 11mo

Bluebird I got the audio as a ‘skip the line‘ loan, for 7 days—I have 3 days left. Don‘t think I‘ll finish. Both my holds for print and audio are also a long wait. 11mo

Finished Part 3, can't wait to hear what others thoughts are so far. I know one thing that has really hit home, I really need to limit (eliminate) my coke intake. I used to never drink it, it was water, coffee (black), or wine (red); but then I got hooked back on the soda.

#NaturalLitsy
@AllDeBooks

TEArificbooks I started by switching to Coke Zero sugar to reduce the sugar intake at least. I just like flavor to much. I drink water and tea mostly. But I don‘t drink coffee and need the caffeine from coke sometimes. I do like sparkling water with flavor but it goes flat so quickly. 11mo
ElizaMarie @TEArificbooks I do like Coke Zero. I used to only drink soda when out (like part of going out to dinner). Great idea :) 10mo

This was an interesting read - thought-provoking!

Basically this had same things told over and over again, but from different views. But the author explained at the end why book had to be this long: you have to tell what are the facts that your opinions are based on.

I loved how this wasn't preachy, it just wanted to open my eyes. I knew some things already, but I also started to think some things more and got new things to ponder.

Interesting paradigm shift here. Focusing on individual nutrients grew out of deficiency- caused diseases like scurvy and pellagra and we‘ve stuck with that framework.
#natrualitsy

Tamra I am interested in this book. Processed food is so ubiquitous that it‘s hard to avoid now. The worst part is schools make it nearly impossible to help kids develop good eating habits. 11mo
Lcsmcat This sounds right up my alley. Stacked. 11mo
Aimeesue @Tamra Van Tulleken points out early on that almost all food is processed in some way, except for maybe some wild berries, mushrooms and oysters. The bigger concern is the ULTRA processed, commercially-driven foods, designed for low cost manufacture and stability for transport. I‘m looking forward to reading about the health studies focused on those kinds of foods! 11mo
Aimeesue @Lcsmcat It‘s super interesting so far! 11mo

Pickpick

This is not the type of books I normally read. I usually avoid food and diet books like the plague, but I had heard good things about this and thought I would give it a try. Van Tulleken reads the audio book himself which was great, he even has recorded conversations w/ his twin about their experiences and experiments. I love his approach around processed foods - we cannot avoid it, there is zero shame, but we all need to be educated on where 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures It comes from, the history of it, and what it does to us. I really appreciated his look in how most research we have is funded by big food corporations. And while I went in knowing most of what he would say (processed foods are bad) he laid things out in a fresh and enlightened way. 11mo
jlhammar Agree! Great review. 11mo
Tamra I have this stacked. I‘m glad to know it‘s worth the read. 11mo

Discussion thread - week 1

Well, this is a 🤯-er! It should lead to interesting discussions.

🍩 Do you like the author's writing style?
🍩 Has it put you off your dinner yet?
🍩 Early days, but would this book change your perception of food and your eating habits?

See All 50 Comments
jenniferw88 Struggling with writing style. I'm definitely going to try to change some things in my diet - some of the diseases he's listed I have, so it will be good to try to improve them. 11mo
jenniferw88 I have not been put off my dinner yet, but I think it might do! 11mo
IndoorDame Neither of my holds for this one have come in yet, still hoping they materialize before the end of the month though because I‘m interested in the comments that I‘ve seen popping up! ☹️🤞🏼 11mo
Bookwormjillk I‘m finding the writing a little difficult and repetitive, but the content is interesting. I don‘t really think about food as much as I used to, but this book is inspiring me to pay more attention. Full disclosure though- I read the first part of this on Thursday and then ordered a pizza. 11mo
wanderinglynn @Bookwormjillk 😂 love that! 🍕 That‘s totally something I‘d do (but my hold for this book hasn‘t come in yet). 11mo
Soubhiville I‘m still waiting for my hold too… I‘ll join the live 😆. 11mo
TheBookHippie My hold just came in!!! 11mo
JenReadsAlot I've finished the first 2 sections and I'm looking at labels a lot more! 11mo
rockpools I‘m finding this very readable so far, if gross at times, but the author is a tad heavy-handed - feels like he‘s justifying every example, whilst attempting to explain all of science. The idea that there‘s a type of food that exists primarily for profit is just dystopian! It‘s certainly making me think more about labels, and put things back on the shelf. I‘m interested to know what happens to his body at the end of his UPF ‘diet‘. 11mo
julieclair Sure hope my hold comes in soon… 11mo
ElizaMarie 🍩 I am doing the audio version, which he narrates. I find that makes him very passionate in his explanations. He really wants me to understand what he is saying and why he is saying it. 🍩 With the broken leg and inability to really pick my meals or read labels, this hasn't changed our dinners. I don't really eat a lot of “prepackaged“ food - my husband likes to cook. But from hearing this information I know the ingredients would be UPF.
⬇⬇
11mo
ElizaMarie 🍩 I feel well, as a society, know that food companies are trying to sell a product. I think the packaging is so confusing thought. He talks about high UPF content but then has labels stating “low fat“ or “low cholesterol“ and stuff like that. I think, if anything, it confuses me even more. UPF is “needed“ d/t our lifestyles, our refrigerating needs, our home lives, and stuff like that. We can't 'not“ have them. I don't know... Confusion. 11mo
Deblovestoread Hoping my hold comes in soon but I really struggle with information that deals with food in a gross way so hopefully it‘s not too explicit. 11mo
BookwormAHN I just got back from Walmart and am admittedly feeling screwed 🤷🏼‍♀️ 11mo
BookwormAHN I'm almost through with the audiobook and honestly I'm pre-diabetic and overweight and more confused now about what to eat and if exercise works, than ever. I get his point and I agree with alot of his ideas but it's like what do I eat now. 11mo
BookwormAHN Also I just saw an add from Idaho potatoes suggesting that growing your own potatoes is wrong. Really, growing your own food frowned upon now 🤦🏼‍♀️ 11mo
Bluebird I agree with @rockpools that the author seems a bit heavy handed. The definition for UPF is too broad & too convoluted. the NOVA system is not fully tested and I think more research needs to be done before we can say that ALL these products are the problem. I think a huge % of UPF fall into the high fat, high salt and high sugar categories & still believe these are major contributors-and those seem to be mostly what he was eating. 11mo
Bluebird Not surprised to hear that the big food co‘s develop products that are as cheap as possible to drive up their profits and to get us to eat more of the items/get hooked. Who can eat just one cookie, chip, etc.. Am interested to read the rest of this book. It hasn‘t changed my eating patterns. Still believe whole foods and eating lower fat, salt and sugar items are best. Hope this book spurs more research into UPF so we can determine what to avoid 11mo
PageShifter I like how he explains things, but yeah there is quite much repetition. I have not changed anything for this book, but actually I have been aware of some things even before starting to read this. I think this is making me think about what I am eating even more. And that's a good thing. 11mo
AllDebooks @jenniferw88 I hope you get more used to his style 11mo
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk haha, this did make me lol 😆 11mo
AllDebooks @JenReadsAlot me too 👀 11mo
AllDebooks @rockpools I know what you mean. I am enjoying it tho, certainly is eye-opening 11mo
AllDebooks @ElizaMarie I saw an ad for the book where he recommended eating UPF (if that's your norm) alongside reading the book. It will soon put you off, he cheerfully says. 11mo
AllDebooks @BookwormAHN I don't think there's any easy answer at all. It's a case of trying out what works best for your health and lifestyle. 11mo
AllDebooks @Bluebird Yes, here's hoping more research is done on UPF. I had never heard of the NOVA system before. 11mo
AllDebooks @PageShifter 💯 Anything that makes us think about our food is a good thing. 11mo
TheBookHippie I‘ve read labels since 2006 🤯😅 but I don‘t think any one person can say this is it or not it. Too many variables of ppl dna autoimmune systems etc we all know we should eat whole food -then you look at what‘s in the ground the soil etc. Perfect food scenarios are for the people who have time money access. Cannot wait to read more. 11mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie It certainly makes you think about the complexities of the food we eat. I've read similar books before, but I've never really sat up to take notice, as much as with one 😳 I'm learning so much, I can't stop reading. 11mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie Oooh 👌 11mo
ElizaMarie @BookwormAHN I hear you! It's so confusing what to eat. If I had a personal assistant/dietician/health coach/lifestyle coach, I would be more than happy to eat whatever they put in front of me.

And the packaging that says “fat-free“ or talks about the health benefits of certain foods, just ugh! It's like his whole discussion on cereals. I know portion size is a crazy thing where we are now.

Ugh, what do we eat!?
11mo
ElizaMarie I think I t has been inspiring me to ask my husband to incorporate more whole foods into our diet (I am not able to do any of the shopping at this time). My nutrition is atrocious; part of why I passed out, fell, and broke my leg was because my iron intake is so low (I am severely anemic and pass out often); so... I know I need to work on the proper foods. @AllDeBooks - I love the discussion aspect of this book! 11mo
TheBookHippie The first thing that went in 2006 was anything labeled fat free or sugar free or low fat -all of it a no no. 11mo
rockpools @TheBookHippie Your comment above re perfect food scenarios - YES! I‘m getting a lot from the book, and I think it will change how I eat, but it‘s very all-or-nothing, this good, that bad. Meanwhile, in the real world, life‘s complicated, and balancing family health/diet requirements adds a whole other layer. I‘ve taken a step back and will be attempting a slightly better job, rather than guilt-tripping about not doing a perfect job. (edited) 11mo
TheBookHippie @rockpools my nutritionist told me if you switch one thing or ten percent it‘s a start, try to work to 50 percent change and stay there awhile- see if you feel the difference. So I‘ve lived by that until 2022 and got Covid and then long Covid. I‘m just now starting new way to eat and move again. All or nothing isn‘t for all of society. It‘s just not applicable. 11mo
rockpools @TheBookHippie oh goodness, sorry to hear you‘re dealing with all of that. Hope you‘re beginning to feel better. And yes, small changes are infinitely more doable! 11mo
TheBookHippie @rockpools it‘s much better than last year for that I‘m grateful. I can smell off and on too! 11mo
Smarkies I like how he explains things though there is a bit of repetition. The facts are there and I am learning alot! I didn't actually know what xantham gum was! I do read food labels and have tried for more whole foods... here js to trying harder. 😁 11mo
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie thanks for the tip on the Netflix show. I'm on episode 3. The industrial animal farms are horrific 😢 11mo

Reading this book the other day and my partner says he knows when I‘m REALLY liking a book as I “find every minute of the day to read it - even if it‘s 1 minute. Talk about it …. A effin lot. Talk about it and tell me I should read it, or read a paragraph or a sentence. ALOT.” 😂

It‘s such a fascinating and absorbing read - learning a lot from it!

jlhammar I‘d be more than happy to have a full #NaturaLitsy list for the year ahead chosen by you. I love to plan my reading in advance. Looking forward to some wonderful reads in 2024! 11mo
IndoorDame I definitely participate in the solstice events. I find them very grounding. I‘m likely to pop in and out of buddy reads during the year whichever way you structure them, so I‘ll let the group decide that. 11mo
Chrissyreadit i do have a possible idea- (but ultimately am ok with anything you choose) maybe ask for recommendations, add your books have everyone select up to 12- then those 12 will be the ones used in your order? a little bit the best of both worlds? 11mo
TheBookHippie I like a list of the whole year 🤣 it‘s easy to have the books that way. I like @Chrissyreadit idea!! Pick a list top 12 win. The solstice events are the best! 11mo
BookwormAHN I like @Chrissyreadit idea for choosing books, but ultimately I prefer them planned ahead of time. I'm enjoying the #MidWinterSolace. I find them relaxing. I'll partipate more when the winter games are over. Any consideration for something around the summer Solstice? 11mo
Larkken I enjoy the low-keyness, and even the challenges for midwinter solace have been relaxed and kind to my brain and emotions 😌 having the books ahead of time might make it easier for me to get them in time, but maybe not since I can be a bit scattered. I appreciate the time you've put in so far, so I'm in as long as the changes are something you're up for! Thanks for hosting! 11mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I like the suggestion by @Chrissyreadit Either way it would be easier to plan my reading if I knew the books for the whole year ahead of time. I look forward to and participate in the solace events as best I can. I have noticed quite a few posts escaping my attention because I don‘t think to check, so I just need to be better about that. An annual challenge could be fun depending on what it is. Thank you for all the work you put into this group! 11mo
vonnie862 @Chrissyreadit I like this idea too. Any books you suggest are great. I did not participate in the solstice event but maybe I can next year. 11mo
wanderinglynn Having the list in advance would be great because I check out from the library & many months, didn‘t have enough time because of hold times. I like Chrissy‘s idea too. Ultimately, whatever works best for you. I loved the winter solstice events, particularly the card swap—it was low key and I didn‘t feel stressed about participating. I‘m also happy to help out if you need help/want to expand for the summer solstice or fall/spring equinoxes. 11mo
Graywacke I‘m not sure what would best. Tricky because you want buy-in but also high quality and most of us probably don‘t know what the better books are. (I never do with these nature-themed books.) 11mo
Deblovestoread Having the year planned is a huge help as I participate in so many buddy reads and pop in out depending on that month‘s book. I have no preference to how the books are chosen but like @Chrissyreadit ‘s idea. 11mo
Bookwormjillk I agree with the crowd that having the list ahead of time would be helpful. I‘m new to this group but have enjoyed participating in #midwintersolace 11mo
Faranae I'm completely new and only joined with the MidWinter event. I'm looking forward to next year (all of it!), since my participation this month got a bit derailed with life events.

I like Chrissyreadit's idea, but I also like the general idea of knowing the books for the year ahead of time so I know which month's I'll be joining the buddy reads and which I likely won't.

I like the solace event! And I'd probably enjoy annual challenges or bingos!
11mo
yourfavouritemixtape I would like a list for the whole year - chosen by you or the group. I am not taking part in #MidWinterSolace because I was a bit hesitant to commit to something in this busy time. But I am looking from a distance and it all looks very nice. So I might take part in the next event. 11mo
jenniferw88 A list in advance would be helpful. But open to anything! 11mo
AllDebooks @Chrissyreadit This is a great idea. I'm happy to sort this out as I prefer to have an annual list of planned reads. It will be a bit of work initially but then it's set up for the year. 11mo
Soubhiville Hi! I am fine with books being chosen any way! I tend to only join reads when I have the time due to being in several bookclubs 🤪📚. I don‘t do the winter/solstice challenge or events, and I probably wouldn‘t participate in one here, again just due to time. I have enjoyed reading along and chatting about the ones I‘ve read! Thanks for organizing! 11mo

ElizaMarie I love the idea of knowing books ahead of time so I can schedule them in. But also, I am not the most huge participator when things get super busy. But that‘s why I want to plan things better 11mo
DebinHawaii I am new to the group with #MidWinterSolace as I was looking for a quieter, easier group to join in & help brighten the holidays which it did immensely, so thank you for that. I would like to continue & join in the readalongs & always appreciate knowing titles in advance so I can plan & source books. How they are chosen is not as important to me, I will join in on those I haven‘t read. I would also be up for other events throughout the year.💚 11mo
Read4life I like knowing the books ahead of time so I can get a copy. 11mo
Hooked_on_books I agree with the crowd about the benefit of knowing the books in advance. Especially new, popular titles with long holds (like the January pick, which I can‘t get in time). I don‘t participate in the other activities and don‘t expect to and I‘ve already overcommitted myself to challenges for next year, though in general I do think challenges are fun. 11mo
Bluebird @AllDebooks whatever works best for you is fine for me. 😀 I appreciate all your efforts in organizing these. Even announcing the books quarterly will help in planning. I too get most books from the library so I often have a 1-2 month wait to get the loans. I am trying to limit my commitments this year in order to bring down my TBR list, but I‘ve enjoyed reading along with you all when I have the time. 11mo
julieclair Like others, I enjoy having the books planned out for the year. And I like Chrissy‘s idea for choosing the books. I love participating in the solstice solace events! The winter card swap was especially fun and meaningful. 💙 11mo
kspenmoll Can you add me to your list? I loved the activities etc for #midwintersolace- grounded me to nature & slowing down- transformed my negative attitude toward winter. Would like to continue all year! I felt so much joy. As to books, I am up for anything- a list for 6ths, year helps w library holds. (edited) 11mo

#Naturalitsy January #buddyread

Our joint winner, for the food category was Ultra-processed People by Chris Van Tulleken. It has multiple nominations for the Science Book of the Year. A thorough investigation on the impact of processed food.
I'm really looking forward to reading this. Please let me know if you wish to be added/removed from the taglist.

Pickpick

Listened to our potential December #NaturaLitsy pick early since my library hold came through. This is not a diet book. Explores how ultra-processed food is changing our lives and bodies (and planet) and looks at our flawed, complicated food system. Interesting, shocking, disgusting, enraging—definitely worth a read!

Tamra 🤔 I already have to wage a losing battle with my kids re: junk food. This might send me over the top. 😝 13mo
Aimeesue NPR had a good piece on this subject last week. Really interesting. 13mo

December #buddyread - Food

We have a tie!!! It's a draw between the tagged and Salt, Fat, Acid and Heat: Mastering the elements of good cooking by Samin Nosrat.

I am happy to run with both, staggered over Nov/Dec. Let me know your thoughts.

All welcome to join us. Please let me know if you wish to be added/removed from the taglist.

jlhammar A tie! Well, I'll be reading Ultra-Processed people for sure whether or not we pick it for December (my audiobook hold just came up so I may start it early). Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat I own and is a good cookbook/reference, but probably won't join you all for a reread as my December TBR is already a bit crazy/unrealistic. 14mo
Hooked_on_books The holds line for this one is a mile long at my library, so looks like I‘ll be sitting out this one as well. I look forward to the January pick! 14mo

julieclair I a probably a “no” for this one, because… December. But please add me to the tag list, as I‘d like to follow the discussion. 14mo
dabbe I'm a “no“ for December but a “yes“ for November. Do we have a discussion date? I've never read with the lovely #Naturalisty folks before. So excited! 🧡🎃🧡 14mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘ll have to sit this one out. December is absolutely nuts for me. 😅 14mo

I've been watching documentaries about Big Food and the sugar lobby in particular lately....an important read that I'm sure will get my blood boiling too.

Pickpick

"It's just a thickener." "It stabilizes the product." "It improves mouth feel." "It boosts protein content." We hear these kind of things, justifying the ever-increasing list of ingredients in packaged foods, and we are helpless to do anything about it because we're already hooked. Convenience, cost, availability, and the insidious rewiring of our brains that make us crave ultra processed foods that will never satisfy.

(cont)

CampbellTaraL We underestimate the resources corporations have at their disposal to ensure profits continue to grow. And the only way they do is if we buy more. Of course they're going to configure the product so that we want more of it, it's capitalism. The worst part is what is happening in poorer countries: displacing cultural food systems, indoctrinating people as babies, and leaving them entirely dependent food-like substances that are killing us all. 1y
