Serial Killer Games | Kate Posey

Pickpick

Surprised, but in a good way.

Loved the humour, the serial killer vibes and discussions, the two social weirdos finding each other; the secondary characters were fleshed out, and there were a couple of twists I actually did not see coming.

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

Dunk It sounds pretty good. Is it more of serious tone or comedic? 14h
julesG @Dunk a bit of both - some tough backstory, a current serial killer, but also good banter 11h

#sundayfunday @BookmarkTavern

Murderbot is not a mother, it doesn't have a gender or sex related part, but it's more of a mother than a lot of mothers I've read about lately.

You may tell me I'm wrong. 😉

Ruthiella Definitely agree. Murderbot cares for and protects their humans! 4d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have read the series, and agree…and sadly some of that is our socialization about what mothers do, should do, and fathers should not. But although Murderbot is genderless, I often find myself thinking of her as a her. And in my brain applying female pronouns. Which is not really a good thing, it does not want that label, they like themselves the way they are….my imposing a mental “she” is probably a factor that I need to work on. And ⤵️ 4d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ how sad is it really, when you think about it, that caring for other humans well-being is considered a feminine trait, and female traits are considered less than in our society. 😬. Ok, now I have depressed myself. Sorry for the ramble. 4d
See All 14 Comments
ImperfectCJ Nurturing is (or should be) genderless. And I agree...Murderbot is one heck of a nurturer. I love being a mother and celebrating motherhood, but I wonder what things would be like if we had a day to celebrate nurturing regardless of gender? 4d
ImperfectCJ @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I find myself thinking of Murderbot as "she", too. I've talked with my elder (nonbinary, adult) kid about this, and we hypothesized that maybe it depends on which aspects of Murderbot a reader relates to, and that perhaps the genderlessness of Murderbot makes it so the reader attributes their own gender to Murderbot. I think it's something to be curious about rather than feel bad about. 4d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ImperfectCJ Thank you. I appreciate that. I do not have a non-binary adult to discuss these thoughts with….and have found myself wondering when I mentally gender a non-gendered fictional character if there is not a parallel between forcing my mental categories on someone fictional and forcing real live humans into a binary pattern they did not ask for either. Basically if I can not make that mental leap with a fictional character in a ⤵️ 3d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ Completely different world… it makes me worry a little about myself. And I am a the English speaking person that points out to people that “they” has been a singular pronoun forever when you do not know a specific gender. 3d
Kitta I agree Murderbot has some mother-like characteristics! I can hold the duality of being a mother and being genderless together in my mind somehow. I don‘t really think of Murderbot as anything but an it? Maybe slightly male or masculine based on its presentation of itself? Interesting you both use female pronouns sometimes for it, that had never occurred to me! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ImperfectCJ 3d
BookmarkTavern I can see that! The exasperation and fondness as Murderbot has to take care of its humans! Thanks for posting! 3d
julesG @Ruthiella @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ImperfectCJ @Kitta @BookmarkTavern - oh wow, didn't expect such interesting responses. As a speaker of German my mind often goes to the masculine pronoun when talking about Murderbot. The German word for "robot" is masculine, and that -sadly- also translates into English. I try to catch it, but it sometimes slips out. My children love to make fun of me for saying "he", but they know I know. 3d
julesG Also, yes, it's sad that we associate nurturing mainly with the feminine. This needs to change, but it's a battle that won't change in my lifetime. 3d
BookmarkTavern I never even considered how translations into languages with gendered nouns would shape someone‘s perception. That is so interesting! 3d
julesG @BookmarkTavern I haven't read Murderbot in German. My son did and assures me the German "es" is used - gender neutral singular pronoun, like "it". But that darn word "Roboter" (robot) is masculine and keeps scrambling my brain. 3d
BookmarkTavern I‘m going to have to hunt down a French translation and make my dad read it! 😂😂 3d

What a ride!!

Rhiannon is trying to be a better person, but it's hard. And life keeps throwing lemons at her.

The book ends with a cliffhanger and it's the beginning of the pandemic. That means book 4 is going to show her being stuck in lockdown and I don't think this will be good for her.

@Oryx - thanks for introducing me to Rhiannon

Pub Day: 17th July 2025

It's been some time since I read a book that pulled me into the story so much that I forgot I was reading about fictional characters. Yes, sure, it's unlikely I'll meet a speaking fox in my life and there might not be real magic out there, but all the characters felt very real. Believable backstories, believable problems and struggles.

I want to visit Batty Hole Inn and hug all of them.

julesG Guess I'm the only one who read this? I listened to the audiobook which had some fun effects, like public announcements sounded like you're actually at the train station. Other than that it was mainly commentary on different places and people on Discworld. 7d
kwmg40 None of the libraries I have access to had a copy and I wasn‘t sure this companion book was worth purchasing, so I‘m skipping it for now. Hope to get to it eventually if I can get hold of a copy. 7d
julesG @kwmg40 You didn't miss much. Honestly. Mrs Bradshaw travels the Disc by train and writes her travel log. I didn't have the impression it added a lot to my knowledge of Discworld 7d

1) both? Neither? I often listen to audiobooks when I do "fun" stuff around the house or run errands, I'm mostly standing. But I get to sit down sometimes. And lie in bed when reading in bed.

2) ARC, 3 chapters in I'm slightly annoyed by the "coincidences" that will certainly lead to what's going to be the embarrassment-meet-cute any paragraph now. ?

Low pick.

First book in trilogy that suffers from Middle-Book-Syndrome. Could have been shorter (#audiobook was 24+ hours, I listened mainly at 2.0x); could have less POV (bit confusing and I'm saying that although the narrator did a good job); could read less YA - it's NOT YA, but the dialogue often reads like YA. Why a prologue plus some chapters from the POV of a character that doesn't play an active role in the rest of the book?

⬇️

julesG Liked the writing style, but again, it could have worked with less detailed backstory/history/descriptions. Villainous villains, court intrigue, some snide remarks about politics that is absolutely fitting for the current time. Bit of a romance subplot. TW: mildly gory details 3w

BarbaraJean I actually finished this one on time! To refer back to my earlier comments on Terry's use of chapters: I was sad he reverted back to no chapters here! But I did really enjoy it, chapters or not. I loved seeing Moist discover new sides to himself, and the interplay with Adora was fantastic, even if there wasn't a whole lot of it. I also liked Dick Simnel and the way Harry and Moist kind of mentor him. And the reveal about Vetinari at the end! 1mo
julesG @BarbaraJean Still wondering where I read about the chapters and what. My mind is a sponge when it comes to soaking up information, but a bank vault when I try to get the information out. I know that chapters were discussed pre writing the Tiffany Aching books. Guess I'll remember it when I least expect it and don't have anything with me to take notes. 😁 1mo
BarbaraJean @julesG Haha--yeah, these days my recall of where I read something or how I know something is a bit diminished. 😆 1mo

I did not dig Digging Dr Jones. Not at all.

I'm not going to write a TLDR post. Here are a few points why it didn't work for me:

- American FMC with daddy issues

julesG @quietlycuriouskate Fairly sure you sound more British than the hunky Dr Jones. Guess even I sound more British than he does, and English isn't even my first language. It's not just the "posh" accent ??? and a few mentions of "loo" or "knickers". There are differences in grammar and syntax, too. It just read like an American trying on some British English words. Like if I spoke to my children in an affected Austrian accent replacing ⬇️ 1mo
julesG some terms for their Austrian counterparts doesn't make it real. There is more than the vocabulary that is sometimes different. Just like the differences between British and American English. 1mo
CarolynM You‘ve mentioned 2 of my pet peeves in light fiction (I‘ve encountered them in mysteries as well as romance) - daddy issues and fake English/Scottish/Irish. So irritating! Interestingly, I don‘t think I‘ve ever encountered fake Welsh 😆 1mo
julesG @CarolynM I feel like I need to find a fake Welsh one. But also, no better not. 1mo
CarolynM I‘ll be looking out for one now😂 1mo
CaramelLunacy What a shame! I am fond of adventure romance, but sounds like you found this one more frustrating than fun. 1mo

A historical fiction novel with gothic mystery elements set at the time of the French Revolution.

There are three points of view, the sisters Sofi and Lara and the aristocratic young woman Hortense. While Sofi and Lara's POV is that of working class women who had to upend their lives after the death of their father, Hortense is the poster child spoilt young woman of the aristocracy, who believes the dirty peasants ⬇️

Sofi, Lara and their mother work at the wallpaper manufactory owned by Wilhelm Oberst. Oberst's wife died under mysterious circumstances when his son Josef was a child. Wilhelm Oberst had everything connected to his wife destroyed, except for the contents and the wallpaper of the tower room of his chateau. Of course, Sofi and Lara want to know more and soon find out that the titular ⬇️

julesG Woman in the Wallpaper was Josef's mother and strangely looks a lot like Lara. Why? And why do the wallpaper images change and show different scenes?

Meanwhile in Versailles, Hortense lives a spoilt life, until her parents decide to marry her off to Josef. How will the young aristocrat deal with married life, to a factory owner's son no less? ⬇️

julesG History takes its course and sweeps up the three women in its wake. The Revolution might upend their lives in ways neither of them envisioned.

It took me some time to get into this debut novel, but once my attention was captured I flew through the many short chapters in one sitting.

1) Yes, but very lazy. I made it through school and university with reasonably good marks. Could have been better if only I had not had my nose in books and computers. 😁

2) aye 😉

I ran through those two books at the weekend and wanted shelf trophies. The next book in the series is expected late 2025.

Ana and Din are in Yarrowdale to investigate the disappearance of a treasury officer. What seems to be a locked room mystery that might be solved relatively easily, given Ana's skills, turns into more victims and a case of political intrigue.

The world-building continues to be good. Yarrowdale is not part of the Empire, but the Treasury officers working there are, which is why Din and Ana had to be called in. This means that there are some ⬇️

julesG issues of jurisdiction that might complicate the investigation. Furthermore, we get to see a different part of the fantastic world; different people, different languages, and different socio-economic and political problems.

I liked this sequel to The Tainted Cup, although I could see some of the twists long before they happened. Maybe I am too much of an armchair detective.

I liked the story of how Lord Christopher Eden is not only forced out into society to find a wife. In order to secure a wife Christopher needs a valet. But as much as Mister James Harding might be helping Christopher, he's also a huge distraction.

I enjoyed having Christopher's POV only. This way I found out about James' thoughts and feelings alongside Christopher and that made the slow burn romance much sweeter.

peanutnine Is this the UK title for A Gentleman's Gentleman? I like this cover a lot! 1mo
julesG @peanutnine I think it is. Or it was supposed to be A Gentleman's Gentleman and they changed the title? 1mo
