Weird, maybe bonkers, definitely ingenious dystopian fiction. It's unlike anything I've read before.

It's 1926, Ringmaster and her crew of Sparks (people with magical abilities) travel across the US to bring people joy and to help "special guests" in which ever way possible. This also includes Ringmaster, her wife Odette and their friend Mauve to travel through time (⬇️)

It's also 1917, Edward was just rescued from a WW I trench by Ruth. The two run away to join the circus.

Out already

Debut SF novel with a bit of romance. Unique cultural approach: Korea is the leading nation for space exploration.

Found family, enemies-to-lovers(?), cliffhanger ending.

Nothing much happens in the first 3/4 of the book, unfortunately. Secondary characters are mere plot devices and can only be distinguished by their quirks.

julesG Okay, I'll start. 🤣🤣 Sourcery isn't my favourite Discworld adventure. Rincewind isn't my favourite hero. But, I love how he's bumbling about and accidentally saving the world. 4d
See All 16 Comments
TheAromaofBooks This was my first Discworld book, and while I liked it, I didn't love it. So I was glad to see a lot of reviews saying this wasn't one of the best 😂 I did appreciate the humor and unique characters, so I'm excited to read more. 4d
julesG @TheAromaofBooks Glad you liked it. 3d
Deblovestoread I‘m the same as Sarah. My first Pratchett and it was ok. I am looking forward to the next one to get more familiar with Discworld. 3d
willaful I'm not a huge Rincewind fan (nor is my mom, a huge Pratchett fangirl. ;-) ) so I suggest the newcomers try again, perhaps when we get to the Witches or the Watch books. Or Death, Death is great. Lol.

I read this last month by mistake and don't remember my thoughts much, except there seemed to be maybe some inspiration for “Good Omens.“ Anyone else agree?
3d
julesG @willaful I agree. There are some things that appear in Good Omens. But not only from this book, there are elements from other Discworld novels (especially the ones set in AM) that made it into GO in some way. 3d
BookWrym The Death books are my favourite. Does anyone else here want their own real live luggage? 3d
TheSpineView Not quit finished reading but close enough for discussions. I agree with everyone that this is not my favorite book. However, I thought as I was reading that it reminded me of the movie Pink Panther. Thinking specifically about Inspector Clouseau. There are some similarities between the two. Sorcery was first published in 1988 according to GoodReads. Which is after the first movie with Peter Seller's. I wonder if he drew inspiration from it?? 3d
kwmg40 I'm still working on my reread of this book but thought I'd jump into the discussion anyhow. Rincewind isn't a favourite, but I love all appearances of The Luggage. The Librarian is also a great character. 3d
julesG @BookWrym I'd love to have my own Luggage. 3d
julesG @TheSpineView Now that you mention it 🤔 I see the connection. 3d
julesG @kwmg40 Ook! 3d
BarbaraJean This is my first foray into Discworld outside of Tiffany Aching and Mort, and I agree--not my favorite. It was fun and it made me laugh, but Rincewind felt lackluster. It took me until the upside-down magic carpet and the half-brick-in-a-sock before I was really on board with Rincewind. 😂 @TheSpineView The comparison to Pink Panther actually endears Rincewind to me a bit more! Maybe he just needs an outrageous French accent. 😆 2d
TheSpineView @BarbaraJean Too funny!! 🤣🤣🤣 2d

Well, this was steamier and smuttier than I thought. And a good 150pp too long, or say 2-3 hours too long.

Layla is a successful business woman who has been on 120 first dates. She doesn't seem to be able to interest a man in her. Her friends/neighbours Luke, Zack & Josh, who do a relationship advice podcast, offer to take her out on fake dates to give her advice. There won't be any feelings involved, just dates and 🌶️

#AwesomeApril @Andrew65

julesG All have issues they need to work through. There's a huge third act break-up (when can we get over those?) with a very public and rather lukewarm reconciliation. Some of the triple/quadruple 🌶️ scenes read very porny. I honestly asked myself whether I was getting old and prude?

Also, I am over the dead lover/partner excuse.

Not saying it's a pan, but it's definitely not a pick.

The Colorado Rockies, a billionaire with a vision to de-extinct the large animals from the pleistocene period and making them the attraction of his lodge and camping resort. What could possibly go wrong?

If you liked Jurassic Park, think of this as the low budget version where two gruesome murders lead to an investigation with ice-age creatures in the background.⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

julesG I had an inkling what went on before the second person was killed, which means in chapter one. I knew I was right before the chapters moved into the double digits. From then on it dragged and I wondered how no one even came up with the motive for the murders (which doesn't makes lot of sense anyways) until the evidence was right in front of them.⬇️ 2w

Second book in the Scarlet Revolution series suffers from #MiddleBookSyndrome

The plot dragged on. It was too much about Eleanor being in her own head and asking the same questions over and over. The second half of the novel picks up the pace a bit, but by that point I was tired of reading "What would Sir Percy do?" or "If only Sir Percy was here," as well as reading about Eleanor getting into trouble just to prove her point.

How to write a fantasy-ish computer game recap with lots of gore, sexual content/violence, self-harm/suicide from a female POV and fail at it.

Davi is the centre of her universe. Whenever she dies she respawns at the beginning of her adventure and has been doing so for over a thousand years. Yes, that would blunt the edges of any of us, but she was too blunt to be likeable.

A small island. About 125 inhabitants. One is found dead. It could have been any inhabitant. Because everyone's memory of the night had been erased including the AI's who was the only one capable of doing so.
The murder collapsed the barrier keeping the island safe. If the villagers can't find the murderer and get the AI to raise the barrier again they'll all die. It's a race against time, they have less than two days.

Pickpick

Demoted to a small dark office in the basement of the bank in Baker Street, Harry now has to answer letters sent to Sherlock Holmes. She comes across a letter from her home village and decides to not only write back as assistant to Mr Holmes, but to investigate herself. Of course she finds the missing maid, but also much more.

A short cosy mystery. Perfect palate cleanser.

The one with the long legs is at home and #GhostCat is blissfully conked out.

I guess that means I'll be able to get lots of things done around the house while listening to an #audiobook.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1) I live in Germany. My kids go/went to a German school, but it's a very different school system from my own East German primary school experience: basic sewing skills, basic gardening skills, basic DIY skills. Yes, they learnt that at home, but it's different when they learn it at school among their friends.

2) Wow, tough question. Claire might be able to sew wounds and improvise a splint, but she can't cook.

TheSpineView Great answers! Thanks for playing! 1mo

Chrissyreadit I‘ve not read any Discworld books- should i read The Color of Magic first? 1mo
julesG @Chrissyreadit No. Pratchett himself said to start with Sourcery and read the first two novels later when you know your way around the Discworld a bit. 1mo
Chrissyreadit ok- ordering now. 1mo
BarbaraJean Somehow I missed this post, but I'm seeing the tag pop up on Litsy and so I investigated. 😁 Would you add me to the tag list? Thank you! 2w

Dear #OokBOokClub-ers,

I am proposing a #Discworld re-read based on the above reading guide. #SirTerryPratchett himself suggested starting with Sourcery, so that's what I'd suggest too.

I can draw up a reading schedule.

Your thoughts?

Let me know if you want to be tagged in future postings.
