julesG This one hit different than when I first read it, even than when I last read it for #OokBOokClub, thanks to the current events. 1d
BookmarkTavern Yeah, this one hits differently. So one of my favorite things that sticks out to me was Adora Belle saying “It's not a lie. It's what ought to have been true.” It reminded me of the idea that we read nonfiction to learn facts, but we read fiction to learn truth. 15h
julesG @BookmarkTavern Adora Belle might not have the biggest roll in the book, but she has a lot of wisdom to share. 7h
BookmarkTavern @julesG She does! And after Sybil and Vimes, she and Moist are my favorite of Pratchett‘s romantic relationships. And it‘s because of how it‘s set up in this book. Adora Belle is a puzzle Moist can‘t figure out, a person he can‘t charm, and it evolves so beautifully into him caring what she thinks about him. That scene in the restaurant where he calms her down by teasing her about the proper knife? Chef‘s kiss. now

Pickpick

Someone recommended this book after I complained about third act break-ups. This one doesn't feature this plot-trope.

Chloe and her father are getting by by making an "unnamed sauce" and selling it in their little village. Jeremy has been visiting the village for a few days every year, except the last three. She's just a village girl, he's a duke. He's going to leave again after a few days, she's going to pine for him. Or maybe not?

Chapter 13 - would someone who's read this please tell me this is going somewhere?

I'm bored. Close to Cumberbatch-Sherlock levels of bored.

#buddyread @Leniverse @Caroline2 @RaeLovesToRead

LeeRHarry Short answer: no not really. 3d
julesG @LeeRHarry I thought so. Thanks 3d
RaeLovesToRead I've read this before. I loved it. I'm re-reading so I can finish the trilogy. I remember Glotka being a great character. I also remember that it's not great as a standalone. 3d

LeeRHarry Enjoy!☺️ 4d
Caroline2 And of course it‘s a buddy read so I‘m struggling already!! 😂 it proper drops you in at the deep end at the beginning huh….? 4d
julesG @Caroline2 I read the first 6 chapters then went on a review bender. Seems to be a "Yeah" a "Meh" or "Nope" - not a Marmite book though. Some reviews say it's more like a prologue to the next two books. Some reviews say it's more about the characters than plot... I'm kind of just going with it, but willing to bail if too bored. 4d
julesG @Caroline2 I missed some explanation at the beginning. And there's no map. 4d

Was about to pull the hoover out. #BookMail saved me. 😜

Unfortunately this is not a yellow cover. I might have to extend the #YellowNFShelf into a #YellowAndOrangeNFShelf - doesn't have quite the same ring to it though. 🤔

AnishaInkspill this looks interesting, I had a look, wow over 900 pages but added to my wish list 5d
julesG @AnishaInkspill it is a door stopper, but I'm actually looking forward to reading it. It's a part of history that wasn't really covered in school or uni. I did a lot on the Antiquity, the Middle Ages and then anything after the French Revolution. It's time to catch up on the Medici and Borgias and... 5d
AnishaInkspill @julesG this does looks like a very interesting read, and also my kind of read, it's impressive what you have covered, wow!!!, in comparison I haven't done as much but I am really enjoying the journey. 5d
See All 6 Comments
julesG @AnishaInkspill Trust me, I wasn't too happy about the list of compulsory courses while at uni, but I'm glad that I was forced to cover this wide spectrum of European history now. Growing up in Germany meant I was confronted by some parts of history wherever I went. A castle here, a renowned uni there, a formerconcentration camp in the next town, a medieval bridge with houses on in the next town over... And I asked so many questions 😁 5d
catsuit_mango I am really curious about that book, I loved the Terra Ignota series and loved even more see Ada Palmer (and Jo Watson) conversation in my town, she is funny and full of the kind of weird knowledge that I enjoy. 4d
julesG @catsuit_mango I haven't read her fiction yet, but the non-fiction (first two chapters) is good so far 4d

Second novella in trilogy - third is supposed to be published in April 2025.

Ada and Rian meet again. Months after the events at the Roundabout Ada is tasked with stealing something from a museum during an important gala (think Ocean's 8 with the Met Gala, lots of VIPs,...). Rian, knowing Ada won't let this opportunity pass her, is present to stop her. What is she trying to fit into her teeny tiny purse? A canopic jar?

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC Pub Day: 14 January

A mysterious tower appears in the sky above England. Since neither the military nor any other form of investigation with drones, helicopters, cameras etc reveals anything about the tower, the British do what they do best: Carry on. Then a "countdown" appears on the outside of the tower, as well as the word 'Ascend' and thirteen people from all works of life are beamed onto the base of the tower. ⬇️

julesG It's pretty obvious what is about to happen now, the thirteen have to enter the "dungeon" and work their way up.

The story has good pacing, the action is good too, yet throughout the book I was expecting a different twist on what I had read and seen before. Sadly plot and characters were rather basic, stereotypical even. To me it was a mix of "Arrival", "Saw", "Cube", "Resident Evil",...

kwmg40 After working through the Rincewind books, many of which were heavily dominated by male characters, it was refreshing to see a more diverse and interesting cast. I especially liked Igorina and Jackrum. I also liked how Pratchett poked fun at the conventions of warfare and at the propaganda that tends to surround wars. 1mo

Mehso-so

Cosy fantasy romance between a ghost whisperer and a ghost hunter.

I really liked the idea of a sentient inn that helps spirits to move on to the afterlife and its new innkeeper, who can see ghosts, and needs to learn the ropes. The atmosphere of the inn was incredible, I wish I could have joined the spirits for one of their tea parties.

julesG What spoilt the story for me was the pacing. All the wonderful descriptions and the atmosphere created took time and it wasn't until nearly the halfway mark for the love-interest and with him some conflict to arrive. Since the romance had to move at a faster pace now, it felt like insta-love. 1mo

Pickpick

Finished early this morning after I admired the aurora (background picture).

It could be penned as an epic love story between an angel and a demon. It is much more. The story explores grief and memory and the transformation of a city, its people and cultures over centuries.
