Dragons are not my fictional being of choice (mermaids are), but the more I read them the less originality I find in their stories. Simply seems like they are all facing similar themes, speak similar languages, etc etc. But my kiddo was actively invested so I'll count it as a win and pray he dreams of Green Bay football and not fire holes inside dragon throats and mean boys jealous of their future leader.

Dragons are so not my thing, so if I have to read a book about them, it‘s either gonna be really cute or really sexy. I went with cute! This was such a good little story (which I didn‘t know anything about because I‘ve never seen the movie) and David Tennant did a fabulous job on the narration!

I bought a paper copy of this for the nephew and then decided to listen to the audiobook. David Tennant did a fabulous job narrating. However, I was not expecting this to be so different from the movie and maybe that impacted how much I liked it. Anyway, I‘m going to give this one to him for his birthday next year. In the meantime, I might have to revisit the movie.

Susanita I‘m very fond of the movie because Toothless reminds me of my cat. 🐈‍⬛ 13mo

Listened to this audiobook yesterday - it‘s only 4 hours - and it was so funny! I mean with a hero by the name of Hiccup, how could it not be. As part of his initiation to his Viking tribe, he has to capture and train a dragon. Loved his method. I laughed out loud at the antics of the Vikings and dragons. Scottish narrator was great! #101 #BookSpinBingo #21 #BFC21 #3 #TAILSandTALESforADULTS #28 #AwesomeAugust #ROYALREADATHON Mushu #HSREADATHON

The movie is one of my favorites for the sole reason that Toothless, at different times, reminds me of all my pets. I adore Toothless so I was excited for the original.

The movie is loosely, loosely based on the book. At first, I was disappointed. That isn't my Toothless, but Hiccup is the same boy who loves to study dragons. And if it wasn't for this book, I wouldn't have my Toothless.

PhyllisH How to Train Your Dragon is a favorite of mine. 3y
TheDaysGoBy I too had watched the movies before reading the books and the difference in Toothless was jarring - even though I‘d been forewarned. That said, I‘ve found things to love about the book Toothless and in general I loved the way the series progressed. It just furthered my love for httyd. Have you watched the shows? There‘s a couple Riders of Berk and Race to the Edge. Those are fun too 3y
Butterfinger @TheDaysGoBy I have never been one who likes books over movies or vice versa. I love them both. I love all the Dragon shows and I will continue the books too. I was pregnant with my 10 year old when I went to the movies and watched it three times. I nicknamed her Hiccup because I could feel her hiccuping. I just love HTTYD. 3y

Plus: quick read, marginally entertaining.
Minus: I don‘t get why “boy books” have to be gross. I think it‘s insulting.

So, overall not a fan, but I was told by the young man who lent us these books that the first is something to get through so you can enjoy the rest of the series. I will try the second book on that recommendation. I doubt the kiddo will enjoy them but I‘ll let her have a go.

1) one of my favourite dragons is Toothless. (The top pic is the scary realistic version of Toothless from a dreamworld exhibit I went to in Melbourne).

In a time when dragons are disappearing, Hiccup recounts his earlier years when he had to capture his dragon and learn how to train in. I listened to this on audiobook and had an absolute blast with it. The best part for me though was the level of sass that Toothless possessed throughout the entire book. Very entertaining, comical and good natured.

Listened to the audiobook because the sixth-graders are reading it in ELA. It was a lot of fun—though nothing like the movie. This was a cute story. I‘ll be honest, I would never have read or listened to it if it hadn‘t been read by David Tennant.

My one complaint is the audiobook had music in it and it was SO MUCH LOUDER than the actual story. When I had my headphones in, it hurt my ears.

Glad to have finished 1 Audiobook already! #bookfitnesschallenge Round 2 #SmallSteppers

I did forget to stretch before my walk this morning, but I remembered cool down stretch!

Hooked_on_books I didn‘t know this was a book! I love the movie. I hate it when audiobook sound is like that. I‘ve been frustrated by podcasts, too, when one person is much louder than the other. It‘s annoying. 6y
wanderinglynn Maybe it‘s me, but I hate music in audiobooks. Just get on with the story. I don‘t need musical interludes. (edited) 6y

I need some Audiobook recommendations!

I‘ve been struggling to find an audiobook that I can get into from my TBR. I don‘t like long, slow audiobooks because they can‘t keep my attention.

I‘ve decided to try to break my slump by listening to children‘s books read by great narrators (David Tennant & Jim Dale)!

Let me know if you have any recommendations! I need to listen to at least 5 audiobooks for the next 6 weeks! 😂

#BookFitnessChallenge

BarbaraJean The How to Train Your Dragon series is an excellent choice! The books are hilarious and David Tennant is PERFECT! You might also check out the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood. I listened to the first two on audio during #BFC round one and they were so much fun!! 6y
RealLifeReading Some recent audio books I've enjoyed are Save Me the Plums read by Ruth Reich herself, American Like Me - essays some of them read by the authors 6y
JaclynW I just started listening to James and the Giant Peach with my youngest daughter and we love it. Anything narrated by Neil Gaiman or Bahni Turpin is golden. I loved Born a Crime narrated by the author, Trevor Noah (my older 2 kids listened and loved it too). My son loves the all books written by Jennifer Nielsen on audio. Good luck! I'm curious as to what you end up picking. I need to get the How to Train Your Dragon on audio for my youngest!! 6y

hes7 Good luck—I hope you enjoy them! I‘m not super picky about audiobooks, so I‘m not sure how help recommendations from me would be. 😂 Is the slowness an issue with the story or narration? You could always try speeding it up a tad to see if that helps. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y
Laughterhp @hes7 Haha thanks! It‘s the slowness of the story. I already speed it up to 1.25. 6y
Laughterhp @BarbaraJean Thanks! I‘ve never heard of the Incorrigible children series so I‘ll have to look it up! 😊 6y
Laughterhp @RealLifeReading Thanks! I‘ll check them out! I previously borrowed American Like Me but never got a chance to listen to it before my loan expired. 6y
Laughterhp @JaclynW Thanks for all the suggestions! I‘ve never listened to anything narrated by Neil Gaiman or Bahni Turpin so I‘ll have to check them out. I‘ve heard a lot of good things about Born A Crime! Maybe I‘ll have to finally check it out. 6y

Laughterhp @sebrittain I‘ve listened to Binti and really liked it! I think it was a trilogy.. I should give the rest of the series a listen! 6y
Laughterhp @MaleficentBookDragon I really liked reading You. I tried to listen to Hidden Bodies but didn‘t like it as much as You so I stopped listening to it. I do like Agatha Christie on Audio! I should find more of her books to listen to!! (edited) 6y
Laughterhp @wanderinglynn Oo Ella Enchanted! I loved the movie. I‘m sure it‘s not the same as the book though! 6y
ChasingOm My two favorite audiobook series are THE IRON DRUID CHRONICLES by Kevin Hearne (fantasy) and the VERONICA SPEEDWELL BOOKS by Deanna Raybourne (historical mysteries with a great heroine). The narrators for both are amazing -- I would listen to them read me my to do list if they'd do it! 😂 6y
