Well, that was quite a ride! Robin Hobb is an incredible storyteller (as a rarely-reads fantasy, big books or series reader, I‘ve finished the trilogy in 9 months, which is quite bizarre!). She‘s just kept pulling me back in. And (eventually) we even got dragons.

Time for a few months away, but I‘ll definitely be back to this world and (presumably.some of) these characters.

rockpools Special mention to Paul Boehmer for incredible, never-any-question-who‘s-speaking narration, even at double speed for 39 hours! 1y
TrishB So glad you‘ve enjoyed it ♥️ the next trilogy is as good! 1y
rockpools @TrishB Gah. What have you done to me?! So, which IS the next series? (I may save it for next year tho) 1y
See All 10 Comments
TrishB Ahhhhh, here is the crux of the matter. Fans are split on this. Do you want to read in a linear order or do you want to read the Fitz and the Fool follow ups? Then go back and read the others set in the same world. 🤔 1y
rockpools @TrishB Huh. I KNEW there was a reason I didn‘t know the answer already! I kind of feel like F+F have reached a good pause point - I wasn‘t even sure if their stories continued - so I might try something else. Possibly. 1y
TrishB Liveship Trader trilogy is next in linear order. F&F have 2 more trilogies. 1y
rockpools @TrishB 👍 Thank you! I might try Liveship Trader next. And I might change my mind by the time I get to it! 1y
RaeLovesToRead Read Liveships next would be my advice! I'm on the 1st book of the second Fitz trilogy now after reading Liveships. Liveships was amazing and it feels right reading them in order. 1y
RaeLovesToRead When I read Assassin's Quest I gave it 3 stars in protest because I was like THIS IS NOT HOW THINGS END, but I should revisit that because there are like another 5 books 🤣🤣 1y
Centique Well done you! This is how far I‘ve read too. I seem to really like starting trilogies but i take a long time finishing them! 1y

“You are confusing plumbing and love. Again. “

Yes, I‘m still going with Fitz & (thankfully) The Fool. Robin Hobb is a master storyteller. I‘d decided I was DEFINITELY giving up after this book. Buuut… I‘ll probably need to carry on after a (long) break. She‘s kind of genius.

9 hours left, and 7 days before Libby eats the audiobook. I REALLY don‘t want to be left with waiting for 3 weeks for the final 90 minutes! (Ramps up speed to x2.5 😬)

JULY 2023 WRAP UP

🎧📚 34 books this month. So many 5 star books!

New Reads & Old.

Multiple re-reads that rocked!!

I‘d recommend these 16 for a variety of reasons.

I owe infinite reviews becuz … work … ARGH

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

vivastory I can definitely relate to work. Last week I did 65 hours & somehow still managed to read a couple of full books, go to the movies and start yellowjackets and I'm like, “How?!“ 1y
Twainy @vivastory glad I‘m not alone!! impressive 😁 why is work so busy! How‘s Yellowjackets? I watched current season of Star Trek Strange New Worlds & finally saw the new Guardians 3. I‘d like to see Oppenheimer. There‘s no time for housework or grocery shopping! 1y
vivastory I have to do a lot of professional development for most of this month in addition to my regular schedule for a pay increase. I watched the first 3 episodes of yellowjackets. I really like it so far! The creators do a great job getting the 90s vibe. I'm pretty tired of Marvel movies but I have to admit, I loved Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It's one of my favorite movies of the year. 1y

On one hand, it‘s still keeping my interest.
On the other hand, I keep deciding I‘ve had enough of the series now.
And yet I‘m still going.
**FOR ANOTHER 25 HOURS ⏰**
I‘ve thoroughly dissected my issues with epic fantasy (notably its epicness 🙄. Also, for a book called Assassin‘s Quest, there‘s way too much assassining. And questing).
But my main issue right now, is WHERE ARE THE DRAGONS???

I‘m really not a very good fantasy reader. Sorry!

Soubhiville This review is gold though! 1y

1. Gaaaah! (Actually it might be fine. There should be at least one picture book I can return. Don‘t ask.)
2. What have you done to me? I don‘t read fantasy, I don‘t read chunksters, and I‘m rubbish at series. And yet here we are. And it‘s not even May. I hold you all entirely responsible for this peculiar behaviour.
3. How many hours? Bit scared to look….

squirrelbrain Ha! One day I‘ll try Robin Hobb too, but I *definitely* don‘t do fantasy! 2y
RaeLovesToRead Yes! This trilogy!!!! 🥰🥰 (I'm currently on Tawny Man) 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain It kind of lulled me into a false sense of ‘really very little fantasy‘ at the start of the first book, and by the time it went full weird, I was hooked! 2y
rockpools @RaeLovesToRead Yup! You still enjoying them? ‘m deliberately not going to ask what I read after this one, cos I need a few months reading something else! 2y

Look @TrishB I finished the trilogy and I LOVED it. I‘ve been totally immersed in this world for over a week. In the early sections I sometimes felt so anxious for Fitz getting buffeted around by the forces of evil that I had to take a break and read some middle grade fiction to recover! So so good. I do love a really long fantasy book now and then so I can really live in it - it feels like I was there for every minute of Fitz‘ journey ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finally completed the Farseer Trilogy! What monster books they were at 800 plus a piece. I loved the series as a whole, although I must say the conclusion was more 🌟🌟🌟🌟stars For me. It was a bit of a slog in the middle lots of repetition and for all the journey I went through with them, the ending was rushed, I needed more! That said, I still loved them and my characters, especially Nighteyes and the Fool. Dickens meets Fantasy!

This was an excellent ending to the Farseer Trilogy. Absolutely epic and my favorite of the trilogy. So many people said to keep going, that the series gets better and better and they were right. This was a #Chunkster - 36 hour audiobook but worth the time. This is not a standalone, though Hobb does a nice summary at the beginning of the story. 5⭐️

Im not sure how Hobb does it, this book has almost 900 pages, the pages are far from action packed, there's no build up to an epic ending yet you can't stop reading and its so immersing. I see what people mean about it being a comfort read as that's excatly what it felt like to me.

Once again the world building is minimal but somehow the world is vibrant, Hobb really is excellent at creating worlds with a minimum of on page fuss.

Excellent

I read the Mad Ship trilogy a few years back and found them brilliant... Also enjoyed the rain wild chronicles. I guess this trilogy didn't quite meet my expectations... Although really good in terms of the world created and connecting with all of the characters, I felt it quite drawn out and it took me really long to finish. Glad I read them though!

Third book in The Farseer‘s Trilogy and it was EPIC!
I think it may be my favourite of the 3. But it‘s hard to choose.
It was so satisfying finally seeing some of the big mysteries unravel.
Fitz, as ever, was an absolute pleasure as a protagonist. Superseded only by Nighteyes, who I think is one of the best characters ever written. Awesome conclusion to the trilogy.

Mitch Ahhh - wait until you get onto Ship of Magic! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 4y
Messiejessie I accidentally read The Liveship Traders Trilogy before the Farseer‘s. I hadn‘t read much fantasy, so I thought I‘d just dip my toe in with Liveships, but I loved it, and now I‘m hooked on Robin Hobb. Have been slowing collecting the rest. The way she writes her characters! 💗 4y

Day 4: Assassin‘s Quest by Robin Hobb #7Days7Books

This entire series, for me, explores different expressions of love without placing them in a hierarchy. It was also the first book I read that wasn‘t strictly heteronormative which was somewhat of a revelation to teenage me.

I loved the first two of this series but I found that too much of this one was spent with the characters stuck not doing much. Trying not to give anything away so forgive the vagueness. I felt that more could have been made of this book but a good ending to the story, when it got there.

A strong finish to an excellent trilogy. Difficult to review without spoilers but it‘s gripping all the way to the end, everything ties up nicely with a number of flourishing twists to keep you guessing and I really grew to love Fitz and Nighteyes. I felt like Fitz‘s personality develops nicely in this book without losing key character flaws, which really humanises him as a character. On to the live ship trader trilogy I go!

Started this one on Kobo last night. I'm excited to complete the Farseer trilogy, and am so thankful to all the Littens who have trumpeted their love for Robin Hobb. I don't think I'd have picked up these books without the Litsy love, and I've been so engrossed in Fitz's world. #BlameitonLitsy

As much as I enjoyed this concluding volume of this trilogy boy was it a slog! It would benefit hugely from a severe editing as it got vague & flabby in places. Fitz finally gets out that damn keep though he's still as slow on the uptake as ever. Plot took a slightly disappointing turn into fantasy cliche (enter dragons) & the climax took a lot of getting to which diminished it ever so slightly. Did love the ending though... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️

readingjedi Cont. from above. The explanation of the Red Ship Raiders motivations was seemingly low key but as I fully grasped it it was nothing short of heart stopping. I also loved the resolution of Molly & Burrich's story. Very enjoyable & immersive fantasy - did I enjoy it as much as Symphony of Ages? Not quite but very nearly. 5y

The final installment in the Farseer trilogy was long, sometimes exhausting, but the end was most satisfying! Hobb is a master storyteller - I am completely in love with all the characters (except maybe for Regal). And I think Nighteyes might be the wisest of them all.

Even longer than the previous installment, there is possibly too much of the walking-hunting-making camp-eating element, along with the frequent "hot girl tries to bed Fitz" episodes, but things pick up speed towards the end and everything comes to a reasonably satisfying conclusion. I think the trilogy as a whole deserves 5, if only for Nighteyes, hands down the best wolf in all fiction.

This is the weakest book in the trilogy. There was a large part of the book that was slow and dragged (too much time on the repetitive “we walked, then built camp, hunted, and slept”). That time could of been spent on developing the ending more. But through out the whole book I was completely invested in the world and the characters. Also an odd pairing at the end didn‘t sit well with me.

A diverse reading month - fictionalised true story, two lots of short stories ( book clubs!), a chunkster epic and an award winning novella! Sadly no #onenonfictionamonth though. #septemberinbooks

Pickpick

Wow - Robin Hobb sure can close out a trilogy with a bang! This really is a true quest - a long road trip, adventure, magic, disaster, recovery, disaster again, heartbreak, riddles, puzzles, tests of strength and skill - it has it all! This book really showcases why Robin Hobb is a supreme storyteller. Cant say anymore or it'll be a spoiler!

TrishB Love these 💕 6y

Mitch @Kalalalatja Sunday treats! It‘s been the first real fall day here- so we‘re celebrating with blankets and comfort food! 6y
DivaDiane Good thing I saw this just AFTER I ate. I am not tempted. No siree! So, your thoughts on the first trilogy? I just finished my reread of Assassin‘s Apprentice. Will slowly reread them. I doubt I‘ll catch up, but If you want to discuss, there won‘t be spoilers for me. 6y
Mitch @DivaDiane cool! I read the liveship trilogy first and I now have questions!! I loved this story, but I stayed up half the night to read the Liveship finale and this one didn‘t quite get me so bad! I loved it though and feel Hobb is a genius at closing out a story. 6y
DivaDiane You did it just like I did and I completely missed the Fool in the LiveShip Traders. Otherwise, my feelings toward the Farseer Trilogy were much like yours because the LiveShip Traders Tril is just so mind-blowing. But this time around, having finished the whole 16 book series, I‘m noticing things. It‘s really amazing how just about everything that is important throughout the whole series makes an appearance in Assassin‘s Apprentice. 6y
DivaDiane Oh, and what questions? You can WhatsApp me. 6y

Today‘s reading location....When this area, Sandwood, first appeared on maps in the 17th century it was described as an extreme wilderness where wolves love to roam. Brilliant timing as the book I‘m reading has a significant wolf in it and the chapter I‘m on, that wolf has a starring role! #readingonlocation
