Secret, Book & Scone Society
Secret, Book & Scone Society | Ellery Adams
From New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams comes the first in an intriguing new series set within a quirky small-town club where the key to happiness, friendship--or solving a murder--can all be found within the pages of the right book . . . Miracle Springs, North Carolina, is a place of healing. Strangers flock here hoping the natural hot springs, five-star cuisine, and renowned spa can cure their ills. If none of that works, they often find their way to Miracle Books, where, over a fresh-baked "comfort" scone from the Gingerbread House bakery, they exchange their stories with owner Nora Pennington in return for a carefully chosen book. That's Nora's special talent--prescribing the perfect novel to ease a person's deepest pain and lighten their heaviest burden. When a visiting businessman reaches out to Nora for guidance, she knows exactly which novels will help. But before he can keep their appointment at Miracle Books, he's found dead on the train tracks. Stunned, Nora forms the Secret, Book, and Scone Society, a group of damaged souls yearning to gain trust and earn redemption by helping others. To join the society, members must divulge their darkest secret--the terrible truth that brought each of them to Miracle Springs in the first place. Determined to uncover the truth behind the businessman's demise, the women meet in Nora's cramped and cozy bookstore to share stories and trade support. And as they untangle a web of corruption, they also discover their own courage, purpose, and a sisterhood that will carry them through every challenge--proving it's never too late to turn the page and start over . . .

The tagged book is one #WithTherapist or a kind of therapist. The MC (Nora) is a bookseller & bibliotherapist who recommends specific books & book stacks to help her customers get through their issues. 📚

The author‘s website has the lists of book Nora recommends in this book https://www.elleryadamsmysteries.com/downloads/BibliotherapyBookTitlesfromTheSec...

I keep trying cozy mysteries & hoping to find one I like. This is pretty good. The non-detective investigation makes much more sense than any other cozy I‘ve read and that made me happy. Also, just gorgeous writing about the joys of reading.
When a suspicious death occurs in a small town filled with ppl escaping their past, 4 outcast women work together to solve the crime their sexist sherif won‘t.
3/5 read for the love of books

Bookish characters who create a found family. Crime solving. Coffee, tea, wine and baked treats? I found a new series to love.

I picked this up for my "cozy mystery" reading challenge. This story appealed to me, but I didn't get engaged enough to care about the characters. I kept ditching it as my hopeful new releases dropped and couldn't get back to this story. I think this is a me problem vs. a book problem.

This cozy mystery is disappointingly bad. The characters engage in way too much over-explaining while they are doing something, which makes the dialogue clunky and pedantic. The situations they insert themselves into strain credibility. And the characters are more like caricatures, especially the men. This ends on a cliffhanger and I don‘t care enough about any of them to continue. Moving on.

sisilia Oh that‘s too bad. The title is so inviting 13mo

For the #BookAboutBooks prompt I bring you the first book in the series of 16 (mostly) cozy mysteries on my Kindle that are set in bookstores, libraries, book clubs & other bookish places.📚📚📚📚📚

ShyBookOwl Thank you! I've only read one, the slaughtered lamb. I really enjoyed it but it wasn't exactly "cozy." There's some violence, sex, and I think cursing too if I remember correctly. 2y

A cozy mystery with more substance than most. Set in Miracle Springs, North Carolina. Four women, who work in or own businesses catering to tourists, set out to investigate a murder that‘s related to real estate fraud. I loved all of the women, but especially Nora who is committed to bibliotherapy: hand selling books that address the pain her customers carry into her bookstore. To work together the women must share their truths. Fun read!

Finished one book early in the week. I enjoyed the mystery but wish the author would have given the MC a different back story. I was going to DNF Maybe but finally got interested at about 20% and want to know how each of the individual patient arcs wrap up. I have always been interested in Russian history and the Romanovs. Loving Boyne‘s HF on audio set in this time forward to the 80‘s. 8 days til tax seasons over and a couple days off…

Cinfhen So interesting/ I bailed on the Boyne this week - I think it was narration that wasn‘t jiving with me 2y
Deblovestoread @cinfhen. I started out at 1.8 but had to slow it down for awhile to get use to his accent. I was able to ramp it back up after a couple of commutes. 2y

First book to check off from the July #bookspin BINGO board is the first book rented from LIBBY. Reads much like a cozy mystery, with a little town, some murders and a dedicated, interesting cast of characters that work hard for justice and an answer against corruption. I loved the setting, and would join the society in a heartbeat. Also, I want to visit that bookstore!! #recentlyread 4.5⭐️ @TheAromaofBooks 📚❤️💙

I liked the plot/characters in this mystery, but there were a few things that bothered me. First, our MC's irritation with her friends. Nora's new friendship pact feels forced at best. Second, several unlikable characters are described as "rotund," as if their being overweight is key to their sour personalities. Diversity is important, but this came across as fatphobic. Third, some of the accents were just too similar when read by the narrator.

KathyWheeler Ellery Adams also has a series I find unreadable because of the negative depictions of fat people— The Supper Club mysteries. 3y
Shae_Purcell @KathyWheeler I just read the description for the first book in that series. Cringe! 3y

This book was a slow burn. It took me awhile to get into it, but then I was hooked. The prose in this book made it feel as if it was written 50+ years ago but then something modern like Harry Potter would be referenced and I would be reminded that this is a fairly recent book (2017). Very different from anything else I have read this year.

The best of intentions but I still finished this the day before posts for my virtual foodie book club were due.🤷🏻‍♀️It‘s just been that kind of month.😬 I really enjoyed this 1st book in a food & book filled cozy mystery series (enough so that I got the 2nd & 3rd books on Kindle sales). Nora helps heal peoples‘ souls & hearts through books, Hester through baking comfort scones & they come together with 2 other women to solve a murder. I picked⬇️
