Just After Sunset Exp: Stories (Export)
Just After Sunset Exp: Stories (Export) | Stephen King
69 posts | 86 read | 51 to read
Subtle, haunting, terrifying--this astonishing collection of short stories from #1 bestselling author Stephen King includes the short story "N." Stephen King--who has written more than fifty books, dozens of number one New York Times bestsellers, and many unforgettable movies--delivers an astonishing collection of short stories, his first since Everything's Eventual six years ago. As guest editor of the bestselling Best American Short Stories 2007, King spent over a year reading hundreds of stories. His renewed passion for the form is evident on every page of Just After Sunset. The stories in this collection have appeared in The New Yorker, Playboy, McSweeney's, The Paris Review, Esquire, and other publications. Who but Stephen King would turn a Port-O-San into a slimy birth canal, or a roadside honky-tonk into a place for endless love? A book salesman with a grievance might pick up a mute hitchhiker, not knowing the silent man in the passenger seat listens altogether too well. Or an exercise routine on a stationary bicycle, begun to reduce bad cholesterol, might take its rider on a captivating--and then terrifying--journey. Set on a remote key in Florida, "The Gingerbread Girl" is a riveting tale featuring a young woman as vulnerable--and resourceful--as Audrey Hepburn's character in Wait Until Dark. In "Ayana," a blind girl works a miracle with a kiss and the touch of her hand. For King, the line between the living and the dead is often blurry, and the seams that hold our reality intact might tear apart at any moment. In one of the longer stories here, "N.," which broke new ground when it was adapted as a graphic digital entertainment, a psychiatric patient's irrational thinking might create an apocalyptic threat in the Maine countryside...or keep the world from falling victim to it. Just After Sunset--call it dusk, call it twilight, it's a time when human intercourse takes on an unnatural cast, when nothing is quite as it appears, when the imagination begins to reach for shadows as they dissipate to darkness and living daylight can be scared right out of you. It's the perfect time for Stephen King.

3½✨
It's been a while since I read King. But this compilation of stories made me remember why I like his work so much. From one extreme to the next, he keeps surprising me in the most unexpected ways.
N, Mute and The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates were my favourites.

While probably the weakest collection of King's short works I've yet read, it remains a collection of King's short works, which is to say an absolute delight. I hope his next collection reverses the downward trend, but either way, I'll surely be happy to read it. Standouts include Willa, The Gingerbread Girl, The Things They Left Behind, N., The Cat from Hell, and Mute. 4/5

King is so good at writing short stories, and these delivered. I know most people seem the like N. the best, but I really enjoyed Willa and The Gingerbread Girl. The first gave me lots of feels, the latter was non-stop adrenaline. But all were so good! And In A Tight Space….what a way to end a collection. 😳

First I read a cool ghost story called Willa from Just After Sunset.
Then I read some Project Hail Mary which is vg so far.

Harvey‘s Dream. Story 3. Read by Stephen King. Not a great narration, but interesting to hear it as if it were coming directly from his brain. The story was a simple but foreboding morning coffee conversation between an old married couple. A simple real life vignette, if your real life is created in Stephen Kings brain. Four stars.

A book of Stephen King stories to prepare for Halloween. Each story read by different narrators. The second, called The Gingerbread Girl, starts when a woman out for her morning run sees blond hair hanging from a car trunk and just has to take a look, and is predictably abducted by the killer. What follows is her harrowing experience at the hands of the man. A truely scary “curiosity and the cat” tale. A little over an hour listening time.

Yay, finished Just After Sunset, missed the #losersclub date by quite a bit 🤣. I‘m not a big short story fan, but this is The King, so I enjoyed it. My absolute favorite was N. It was wonderfully, stressful because I could see myself easily slipping down that rabbit hole. In the author‘s note he mentioned “The Great God Pan” as inspo. This is a book I recently heard about but decided not to add to my TBR. Of course now I have to read it.

5feet.of.fury I had read that with #losersclub and totally forgot about N being inspired by The Great God Pan, which I have also not read, but read a reimagining of 2y
Reggie Is N the one about the ocd people trying to keep out inter dimensional monsters with their repetitive rituals? Cause I loved that one. 2y
NikkiM5 @Reggie yup, that‘s N. I still think about it 🤣 2y
NikkiM5 @5feet.of.fury oh wow These Fleeting Shadows sound really good. And it would cover my book about inheritance for the 52 Book Club. Thank you! 2y

Squeezing in the last #Scarathlon2022 #TeamMonsterMash activities I did but forgot to post. Finished these buddy reads. I have great intentions with buddy reads but I rarely finish on time with the group(s) sorry 😆 Completed Just After Sunset (last 5 stories) I think reading the notes at the end was my favorite part. I haven‘t read much King other then his On Writing memoir, 4 Past Midnight, and This Collection. ⬇️

MatchlessMarie Hoping to read more with the #losersclub group. But I really love King‘s writing brain and seeing all the pieces come together. Glad to have finally read Interview with the Vampire and I am starting to get into all these retellings (Horseman) which was also my October #DoubleSpin There are so many ways to tell classics. I also got caught up with The Rookie/ Rookie Feds 5 episodes total. ⬇️ 2y

5feet.of.fury My personal Favorite Stories: The Cat From Hell, The Gingerbread Girl. Least Favorite: the Stationary Bike. 🚲 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury I totally agree on that 🚲 one! 2y
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRun it made no sense! Couldn‘t wait for it to end. What were your faves? 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury gingerbread girl, the things they left behind, and the cat from hell 2y
5feet.of.fury @BarkingMadRun The Things They Left Behind was good, NY Times at Discounted Rates was sweet but pretty predictable- especially considering how off the rails some of his stuff can get. 2y
Bklover My favorites were The Cat From Hell and The Stationary Bike. I thought TSB was odd at first, until I figured out that the workers were actually inside him. Or at least that was my understanding. Anyway I also loved The Gingerbread Girl! Was fun revisiting this one. It‘s not one of my faves overall but the stories did keep me reading. 2y

Playing catch up from the weekend. I think week 2 was more heavy on watching 📺 than reading. I finally finished watching Carmilla after having read it in September. I also finished Harvey‘s Dream, Rest Stop, Stationary Bike, The Things They Left Behind, Graduation Afternoon, and N. From Just Before Sunset. N has to be my favorite so far. 202 words for #ScarathlonWordSearch
Bottom 3 still in progress but added 2 more hours of reading time. ⬇️

Now, I don‘t know what to read so I finally picked up this one. I‘ve already taken the dust jacket off. I don‘t know why, but reading books with dust jackets stresses me out.
