Pyramids | Terry Pratchett
It's bad enough being new on the job, but Teppic hasn't a clue as to what a pharaoh is supposed to do. After all, he's been trained at Ankh-Morpork's famed assassins' school, across the sea from the Kingdom of the Sun.First, there's the monumental task of building a suitable resting place for Dad -- a pyramid to end all pyramids. Then there are the myriad administrative duties, such as dealing with mad priests, sacred crocodiles, and marching mummies. And to top it all off, the adolescent pharaoh discovers deceit, betrayal -- not to mention aheadstrong handmaiden -- at the heart of his realm.

This was my #DoubleSpin for this month. While it was good, it's probably my least favorite of the Discworld series so far. I loved all of the others, but this one not so much. It's still a Pick, though.

These are the authors I plan to concentrate on for #BacklistReadathon. The first 4 are authors whose series I've chosen for #SeriesLove2024, so I hope to read quite a few from those., and for the remaining authors, I'll be happy if I read at least 2 or 3 from each in 2024.

Began in Belize last year and finished on Hilton Head Island 🏝️ Pratchett‘s books are my favorites to take on vacation!

This one got a little too geometrically metaphysical for me. However, still overall enjoyable. My favorite parts - You, B- the camel 🐪, Teppic‘s time in the Assassin‘s Guild school 🔪, and his ancestors. (Why is there no emoji for mummies??)

“No-one is more worried by the actual physical manifestation of a god than his priests; it‘s like having the auditors in unexpectedly.”

Here, Pratchett criticizes the overreliance on the calcified traditions. The fear of the new, the parents mindlessly forcing their way of life on the children, people forgetting the origins of their convictions, and motions replacing the core of being—and it‘s all comedy.

Gosh, was that man brilliant.

Ok, after reading a few more reviews I‘ve decided my original book (Little Eyes) may be a bit dark for this category. Here are some other possibilities I‘m considering. Anyone have an opinion?
#LMPBC @Johanna414 @peanutnine @BethM

peanutnine If I had to choose, I'd say Redshirts. I'd be fine with Pyramids though too, I've been meaning to try out a Discworld novel and they say it doesn't matter where you start. I've already read Howl multiple times (it's wonderful) 2y
CSeydel @peanutnine Perfect! If I can get a copy of Redshirts I‘ll probably do that one. I already own Pyramids. While some of the Discworld books are more sequential, this one is decidedly stand-alone. 2y
Johanna414 I agree with Sarah - I‘ve read Howl before but would happily read either of the others! 2y

I think it's evident given the quotes I've shared that I had a truly wonderful time reading this book. In fact, for those new to the Discworld, THIS is the book I would start with. It's not too heavy on the lore, repeat characters or social commentary; it goes hard on the word play, laughs and truths: slyly condemning dessication of society and corruption of church and state via 'tradition'. You Bastard, in all its glory, should not be missed.

Oh Terry. I love discworld but this one was tough. Terrific ideas, terrific world, great characters and ideas. He has so much fun playing on ancient Egypt, classical Greek philosophy, death, religion and, just discworld,. But the plot drive isn‘t there, and when it is, the pacing is terrible. It makes for a sluggish read.

CarolynM Not my favourite discworld novel either, but I still giggle about camels doing higher mathematics. 3y

Must admit not the one I've most enjoyed from the series so far, but that's not to say it was a bad one, it's just one I didn't enjoy as much as some of the earlier ones.
Still a great book though.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and it still made me laugh.

A fairly standalone Discworld book as the characters do not show up in any other book (except for Death). It lagged a little in part 3 for me but overall fairly decent.
Finally read this because it was my #bookspin for March.

This is one of my favourite Discworld books, partly because it is genuinely funny and Terry Pratchett has a lot of fun riffing with Egyptian mythology. Also, I love the deeper themes here - about not knowing where you belong and tradition versus innovation. I‘m really enjoying my reread of Discworld and feel that Sir Terry really starts to hit his stride at this point. Another book down for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

One more down in my discworld reread. I may have read it only once before and couldn't remember much. I loved the parts in Ankh-Morpork and everything related to the mummies, but on the whole it's not one of the better ones.

Different from any of the Discworld novels I've read so far, and yet it still captures all the satire and fun. Not everything landed for me, and I found the trip to Ephebe dragged. I think honestly, I would have rather had more fun with the Assassins' Guild members. Overall, though, I really liked it!

My TV is my favorite fitness tool? Yes, because paying for gym memberships is just wasteful for me as an introverted full-time special ed. teacher w/a toddler. I never gather the energy to go. But workout videos are my jam - esp. the high energy dancey ones. This is a new video I'm trying, & as you can see, it took my Terry Pratchett hostage until I was done. Funny that one of the activities we did was called Pyramid!

Yet another book that feels like practice for later novels, with too many problems and not enough strong points. When I first read this book it didn't occur to me that the Discworld books have a race problem, so good for me growing as a reader.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one, it read like three interconnected short stories, like a short story trilogy, so it seemed a bit disjointed, but I liked the overall story. 6y
See All 18 Comments
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well, you know that I think the story has too many angles. 😉 I think Teppic is a tepid character. 😁 6y
Laura317 I got bored with it once Teppic went home. I much prefer his Assassin Guild life. Not sure what this says about me. 😂@julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 6y
julesG @Laura317 Same here, Ankh Morpork is just much more interesting. The Assassin's Guild is fun. I liked the exam Teppic had to take. 6y
Gezemice Oh, my favorite is when he gets dresses as pharaoh the first time. Hilarious 😁 6y
dariazeoli I agree with the thought that this felt disjointed, like three different stories. I did like the idea of the entombed pharaohs being annoyed with being entombed. 😁 6y
julesG I thought that embracing the old ways with a passion (just going to mention sleeping, walking, plumbing here) was very thought provoking, apart from being hilarious. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @dariazeoli Yes, I liked that too, and how they worked together to communicate over the centuries...We don‘t understand that archaic version anymore, but someone does, and they translated it up the generations, I thought that was very clever. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG Yes, I agree there. 6y
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was waiting for some major error in the translations. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG Like the old telephone game!😂 6y
julesG @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Exactly! I was hoping something major would get lost in translation at first, but due to the chain being so long, also be recovered at the end. 6y
khooliha This one had some good imagery/moments near the end, like having to assassinate a pyramid or how Teppic's ancestors support and bolster him in his time of need, but so much of this book fell flat for me. Ptraci exists just as a joke and I don't think it's a funny one. Teppic doesn't make much of an impression as the lead, and can we ditch the comedic incest? 6y
khooliha The opening segment did make me wish that Sir Terry had written a full blown parody of the "boys coming of age in boarding schools" subgenre. 6y
khooliha Also? Too much of the story around Teppic smacked of colonialism. 6y
julesG @khooliha Can I just say, I agree to all of your points? You've put my feelings and thoughts into words! 6y

I enjoyed this one, even though it felt a bit like a trilogy of short stories pulled together in one volume, honestly the Assassin Guild beginning was quite good on its own, but I also liked the returning home and home not being the same part, and then finally the magical pyramid part. I left feeling like some of that ending was left undefined, I‘m hoping we see a few of these characters again somewhere along the way.
