Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban | J.K. Rowling
For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort, and might even have assisted in the deaths of James and Lily PotterHarry Potters parents. Now Black has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard him muttering in his sleep, "Hes at Hogwarts... hes at Hogwarts." Of course, Harry already had plenty to worry about. After inflating his nasty aunt and running away on the magical Knight Bus, he finds hes being pursued by death omens at every turn. He receives two wonderful gifts: a top-of-the-line Firebolt broomstick, and the Marauders Map, a magical diagram of Hogwarts made by the mysterious Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. Hermione disappears frequently, burdened down by a seemingly impossible course schedule. And the soulless Dementors have come to guard Hogwartssupposedly to protect Harry from Sirius Black, but they terrify Harry more than the fugitive ever could. To strengthen himself against them, Harry reaches out to Remus Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who was once a friend of his fathers. Lupin teaches Harry about the Patronus Charm, a defensive measure well above the level of magic generally mastered by wizards Harrys age. But even with his broom, his map, his magic, and his loyal friends, Harry isn't safe. Because on top of everything else, theres a traitor hidden at Hogwarts

Catching up on yesterday's reading! I love this chapter. I'm always so jealous of Harry's unencumbered time to just soak in the Wizarding World. ✨ #potteraday

GingerAntics He certainly deserves it. I need to catch up after I get grades submitted for the 4th six weeks. 12h

So many fun details in this chapter. Love the iron cage with 100 copies of “The Monster Book of Monsters.” “Torn pages were flying everywhere as the books grappled with each other...” #potteraday

The Leaky Caudron: I love this perky chapter because Harry gets to finally have some freedom and enjoy life a little. It also introduces the wise, old Crookshanks. #potteraday

Love this chapter! The creepy dog sets the perfect scene. It's the best surprise when Fudge doesn't care that Harry's blown up his aunt -- and used lumos. Good thing the Ministry likes him in this book! And ironic, or ridiculous, that Harry gets a warning for Dobby's magic and not his own though, lol. 💜💚💜 #potteraday

Poor Dudley, I'd almost feel bad about his depiction if he wasn't so awful to Harry. Marge, though, is the absolute worst. One of my favorite scenes in the movie!

Can't wait for tomorrow! I love the Knight Bus. 💜 #potteraday

GingerAntics 💙🤍💙 the night bus!!! 3d
Eggbeater I do feel kind of bad about all the Dudley fat shaming. If I was an over weight child reading this I think about how it might make me feel. 3d
Linsy @Eggbeater Exactly! It's difficult, as an adult, to read those parts. Dudley is, after all, a kid. And his weight gets compared to his poor character a lot, which are completely separate things. 2d
Yoshi-and-a-book Yassss! Exactly 💯 @Linsy and that was my exact thought 💭 @Eggbeater (edited) 2d

Ohhhh boy...that Aunt Marge...what a piece of work she is. “Just a small one then...A bit more than that...and a bit more...that‘s the ticket.” Always fun to see a hateful, obnoxious character get their comeuppance! #potteraday

Day 2: Aunt Marge's Big Mistake

And in second place of most hate HP characters we have Marge (Umbridge of course winning hands down) But I tend to agree with Marge about the blood lineage think...She and Vernon are both horrible 😤 And Harry is just as noble and brave as his parents.

#PotterADay #ReadAlong #HarryPotter

Linsy Good point! Both Vernon and Marge are awful. I feel like Petunia could have been so much better if she was around different people and had been able to deal with her childhood resentment though. 3d
Enchanted_Bibliophile @Linsy I also think she's not bad, very nosey but not mean like Vernon. And Dudley even have a soft heart in the end.. 3d

The first 75%, just like the movie only the movie to me does a better job of world building than JK does. The ending though, I learned some things I didn‘t from the movie. Also, Snape is an asshat so why do people like him so much? I don‘t get it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love the letters and newspaper clipping. Oh pompous Percy and his fez! His Prefect badge is pictured in Kay's illustration, I checked. For some reason, this detail tickled me.

The moment Harry opens The Monster Book of Monsters is priceless. I'd forgotten it happens so soon! I love his hesitation as he considers just what Hagrid could have sent... It's a great way to remind us of past books/characters while progressing the story. ⚡ #potteraday

GingerAntics I was so hoping there would be a picture of the newspaper clipping in mine, but sadly there wasn‘t. 4d

Day 1: Owl Post

This is my favourite quote 👆
I love how Rowling summaries the previous two years (books) in the first chapter. Giving us everything we need to know about what happened, bit also adding new titbits. Keeping us entertained all the way through.

I love Harry's gifts (each representing their giver in its own way)

#PotterADay #ReadAlong #HarryPotter

Linsy Love your collage! I especially love Hermione's gift to Harry. Shows she's really thinking of him. I know how easy it is to just want to give books! 😆 4d

Not like I ever need an excuse to pick up a Harry Potter book...but the Prisoner of Azkaban #PotterADay hosted by @Linsy kicks off today (on my day off) and so...here I am. 🥰

I usually reserve the fall/early winter for HP...but let's be real...I'm usually thinking about the Wizarding world every single day of the year soooo...🤷🏼‍♂️

Yoshi-and-a-book I want to do #potteraday but the library has no copies and the online database has zero ebooks. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 5d
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Yoshi-and-a-book Ohhh no! 😱. Have you tried a used bookstore? The ones around me usually have multiple copies of each book for 3-4 bucks. 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️ 5d

Just finished reading the illustrated version of this book along with Jim Dale‘s audiobook with my 8 year old. This is my favorite of the series and is so fantastic to revisit. Love, love, love seeing her experience this magic for the first time. Can‘t say enough amazing things about this series, these illustrations, and that narrator. #JimDaleisthebest

Prisoner of Azkaban was my childhood favourite in the series, slightly gothic & very haunting. Still the ways the lives of Sirius and Remus were so blighted by the cowardice of another, starkly contrasted with the raucous high jinx of their youth pulls my heartstrings. What it is to live on in the aftermath of betrayal & grief...

Pictured with gothic classic, Wuthering Heights, another beloved book of my youth that reckons with loss and grieving.
