Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) | Rowling, J.K.
For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort, and might even have assisted in the deaths of James and Lily PotterHarry Potters parents. Now Black has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard him muttering in his sleep, "Hes at Hogwarts... hes at Hogwarts." Of course, Harry already had plenty to worry about. After inflating his nasty aunt and running away on the magical Knight Bus, he finds hes being pursued by death omens at every turn. He receives two wonderful gifts: a top-of-the-line Firebolt broomstick, and the Marauders Map, a magical diagram of Hogwarts made by the mysterious Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. Hermione disappears frequently, burdened down by a seemingly impossible course schedule. And the soulless Dementors have come to guard Hogwartssupposedly to protect Harry from Sirius Black, but they terrify Harry more than the fugitive ever could. To strengthen himself against them, Harry reaches out to Remus Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who was once a friend of his fathers. Lupin teaches Harry about the Patronus Charm, a defensive measure well above the level of magic generally mastered by wizards Harrys age. But even with his broom, his map, his magic, and his loyal friends, Harry isn't safe. Because on top of everything else, theres a traitor hidden at Hogwarts

For me, this is where the series really picks up. I love the whole story of the dementors, the time turner, a prisoner on the loose, the Marauders‘ Map, learning more about Snape‘s grudge, and (my favorite) Lupin! I love that Hermione has a few moments of defiance in this book with Malfoy and Prof. Trelawney. *I found this British edition in a used bookstore, and I love it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This has always been my favorite book of the series - I can remember where I was sitting 25 years ago when I first read the ending and, for the first time I can remember, felt genuinely shocked by a twist in a story.

These are our road trip books now, so we started this one back in April as we drove home from FL and finished it on our drive back to IL from Kentucky.
Looking forward to book 4 on the next trip!

My original copy of the prisoner of Azkaban was so bad the cover was torn, it had seen bath water several times, and the spine was so cracked it couldn't close.

No comment on the third thing, there are a few books I would just erase from the planet though. Such as curly girl and Lolita

The third book sees Harry, Hermione, & Ron about to start their third year at Hogwarts. On the way there they encounter Professor Lupin, their new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, when a Dementor, one of the feared guardians of Azkaban searches the train. Harry seems to be the worst affected of anyone. It seems that a prisoner named Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban & is after Harry to take his revenge for what happened to (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named & the Dementors will be a fixture around the school for a while. The story also takes in werewolves, secret maps, animagi, the trial of Buckbeak, & Gryffindor's quest to win the Quidditch Cup.

This is a re-read & my original rating of 4 stars stands. I'm not a big fan of the Buckbeak storyline in general (Buckbeak is fine, it's the whole 'animal in peril' thing) & I don't particularly like Professor Trelawney
13mo
OutsmartYourShelf (I agree with Hermione's assessment here). On the plus side, there's Quidditch, the Marauders' Map, & the introduction of characters (Lupin, Black, etc) who will appear in further books on the side of either good or evil. It's not my favourite of the series but it's still good. 4🌟

I am reading a few books right now:

•Lady Chatterley's Lover (so far I would recommend to certain people)
•Migrations (I don't know. I had to go back and reread a few chapters because I'm not paying attention)
•HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban (always recommend)
•LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring (yes for those that like epic classics)

I listen to HP to fall asleep at night but don‘t have a current audio read. Hubs got stuck at work so Wes and I had to drive an hour ten to a friend‘s house for dinner tonight. Enter HP. Two things really struck me: 1 the adults should‘ve prevented Hermione from overdoing it 2- Snape is a horrible bully. Like no redeeming qualities.

5-26-23: My 59th finished book of 2023! The 3rd installment of the Harry Potter series was ok. It was a lot of classes and quidditch related chapters until the last 100 pages when it picked up. Between Professor Lupin‘s secret, to the capture of Sirius Black and the discovery of Peter Pettigrew, learning about dementors and the Patronus, it became very interesting. As usual, Ron cracks me up and Hermione annoys me. It was nice to see Harry happy.

Harry Potter is in his third year of Hogwarts school and is eager to get the year going. However, Harry soon finds out that the feared criminal Sirius Black has escaped from the prison of Azkaban, and that he‘s after Harry. In response to this threat, Hogwarts brings in prison guards from Azkaban. These guards are known as dementors, and they cause Harry a lot of trouble. The year progresses, and eventually the guilt of Sirius Black is questioned.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Javin. You were missing your POV and recommendation. 3/6 2y
Javin.VandenDungen You might like this book if you like fantasy books and books about magic.
The point of view in Harry Potter is third person omniscient, as their is an outside figure following Harry along, and referring to him as Harry. The author uses clever language to develop the feelings and emotions of Harry through an outside perspective.

Also I just need to post how gorgeous my new reading journal is for 2023 and beyond! It‘s from The Quirky Cup Collective, and it‘s amazing; besides having this beautiful cover and gilded edges, it has sections for book reviews, TBRs, Reading Challenges, Books to Own, and more! I‘m hoping this helps me put a bit more thought into my final thoughts on a book, so we shall see!🌿

Here‘s my reading progress for a book I started reading last night. It‘s good. I‘m getting cozy vibes from this book series and I‘ve only read the first 2 books so far. This is a good series to read when you‘re curled up with a blanket and hot drink but it‘s also a good series to read if you want to escape the real world and not think about anything for awhile. I‘m having so much fun reading this series. I want to watch the movies too.

The third installment of JK Rowling‘s series is one that dives deeper into the overall story that is progressively building on. We meet many new characters and learn more about Harry‘s late parents and their friends. Ultimately having to save an innocent man after the truth is revealed.
