I didn‘t think I was going to get through this book this weekend, but I‘m knocking things off the to do list. This is a well researched, comprehensive, non-judgmental, eye opening look at ultra processed food and the ramifications of it playing a big role in our diet. I appreciate the inclusion of the UK, USA and Canada in his research

Im so glad I read/listened to this book. I thought it had several interesting parts i had not heard about such as the experiment in the early 1900‘s with infants and toddlers and food, and the Nestle Barge in South America. But most of all it reinspired me to remember that there is a way to feel better, and that my brain and body are being hijacked by ultra capitalist companies. mcctrish @ChaoticMissAdventures I remember when I had my first baby, I nursed him and he was finally old enough ( according to all books to take one feeding by formula) He was 6 lbs at birth and a voracious and frequent eater, I was so happy for the break. He hated it. It took FOREVER to set that routine. Then we both got colds and my paediatrician said cut the bottle til he‘s better. I started crying on the spot. One bottle so I could get dinner ready 😭 3mo

Tamra I haven‘t read the book, but I think being mindful about food choices is good goal. At this point I am a tad more worried about all the microplastics we consume. By just opening a plastic bag we inhale microparticles of plastic! 3mo
Tamra As an adoptive mom, I hope the author wasn‘t bottle/formula shaming per se. Nursing isn‘t an option for everyone. 3mo

ChaoticMissAdventures @Tamra not at all, the author is incredible throughout about not shaming. The focus is on how terrible the companies are, how they have worked their way into remote villages and give misinformation, and push formula onto areas that may not have access to clean water then they start charging after they have established a culture. He is very open and honest about how we as consumers often cannot avoid processed food for a number of reasons. 3mo
mcctrish @Tamra 😳 plastics really should be banned. I‘m barely into the book, so far it‘s only ice cream and all the foods with carrageenan, Palm oils, and guar gum getting talked about ( there goes my cottage cheese) so far my take away is if you can‘t buy the ingredients you should limit the foods that have these things in them - that‘s just common sense imo 3mo

ChaoticMissAdventures @mcctrish Nestle is a horrible company, they have taken over and drained so many natural water sources only to sell the water back in plastic to the same community. I have been boycotting them for over a decade, but like the author talks about it is really hard because they own so much you do not realize they own, like cat food and cleaning brands 3mo

Read for #Naturalitsy #MidwinterSolace it‘s a soft pick. I knew much of the info on UPFs (Ultra-Processed Foods) it was a good refresher & while I knew about Nestle‘s role in baby formula scandals, I wasn‘t as familiar with the floating junk food supermarkets they took down the Amazon River.🤦🏻‍♀️🤯🤬Still, it drug a bit with repetition, especially in the middle. But as a food & nutrition geek, I‘m glad we read ⬇️

rockpools I think a lot of the final conversation about this book took place last week. However, I‘ve just finished. I am glad I read it, I find I am much more aware of ingredients, including those that are so prevalent that you don‘t even think of them as weird (maltodextrin for eg), and am trying to focus on more ‘real‘ food. HOWEVER. Lots. I think he‘s basically arguing for a shift away from the entire capitalist system, and while I don‘t necessarily 3mo
rockpools disagree, I‘m not too sure it‘s helpful from where we‘re at.

Actually, that might be my take on most of the book! I don‘t disagree (and it has improved my awareness) but I‘m not too sure how it helps. Worth reading, especially in the context of a group discussion like this.

ElizaMarie @rockpools I agree. I feel like this helped me mostly by being more aware of things. Like you mentioned, “real food“. 3mo
ElizaMarie I am glad I read it. I don't think I “learned“ a whole bunch (as most of this stuff was either common sense - prepackaged foods aren't super healthy). I think what frustrates me the most, was I couldn't really help develop a better plan of action after reading (other than a general, more whole/raw foods, more fruits and veggies). I found the most interesting aspect of it was the reminder that packaging claims aren't really that reliable. Bummer. 3mo

It was a little long and reiterated points multiple times. However, this book made me more aware of how much UPFs have invaded the food system. If nothing else, it will make me read food labels a whole lot more and reduce my intake of fizzy drinks. The audiobook did have chatty /interview sections between the author and his brother, which helped ground the book a little. #naturalitsy

This book is about the dangers of eating ultra-processed food. I'm not sure how to feel about this book. I agree that the ulta-processed foods are unhealthy however I think most sensible people know this and what he doesn't cover is what to eat now.

TheAromaofBooks I haven't read this one, but I am always low-key frustrated by books that spend a great deal of time telling me about a problem, but then offer me no alternatives or suggestions for what I can do to help tackle said problem. 3mo

Probably better as a podcast, with interviews from other people.
In reading this for #naturalitsy I found the author pedantic + repetitive. I liked what I did learn, but mostly feel I read padding and strident reiterations. My takeaways: avoid emulsifiers, avoid artificial flavors/smells, trust yourself to know when something's bad for you. Me? I will continue to eat my fav ketchup chips... But will also pay better attention to ingredient lists.

This was okay. I feel like a lot of the reasons van Tulleken shared for why we should avoid processed foods were things I was already aware of and why I try to avoid them. He did add a few more that were new to me and gave me even more motivation to cut them completely out of my diet. I tried to finish this one quickly as there were quite a few folks waiting on the library hold. #naturalitsy #BookspinBino @thearomaofbooks @alldebooks

TheBookHippie I finished it. Had to be back to library was only 7 day loan. But I did not learn one new thing or like the tone 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😬😵‍💫. Could be just me. Seemed all preachy with no clear path and was quite elitist in what the thought was in what we can actually control. Not everyone has time money or resources even if they wanted to adhere to eliminating types of foods. Not sure why this book rubbed me wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️. 3mo

IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I agree. He implied that he didn‘t have a moral stance on what others should do and that he understood structural inequality but neither of those things really rang true. He reiterated facts I knew and when I thought about if I could actually make changes in my life based on hearing this all again realized my circumstances don‘t allow me to. Maybe this would have been stronger if he‘d focused more on next steps in public policy. 3mo

I‘m enjoying the book and recommending it- i do wonder how we can get out of this without advocacy- to change this. I know i was really dependent on quick meals after getting sick and blamed my weight gain on lack of movement but now wonder how much was the change in my diet too? (too significantly more processed food) 3mo

Many FDA things got gutted and have no one watching and many environmental things got cut ..So to try and get them back plus more is a big mountain. 😳😵‍💫 and not high on the list as we don‘t even control our own bodies currently. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit not crazy and the little things do make progress . More water, less processed no fast food, just keep making little simple changes. Low impact exercise, walking, etc. 3mo
BookwormAHN I've also finished it and I have mixed feelings. I agree with how bad processed food but I'm not to sure what to eat now. Also I'm feeling rather defeated on his views of exercising. 3mo
IndoorDame @BookwormAHN most of the current science is trending towards his view that exercise doesn‘t have a significant impact on weight loss, but he really failed to emphasize the other aspects of the research on exercise that show the deep degree of importance it plays in overall health and longevity 3mo

Bluebird Also my least favorite section. Kinda preachy & not very helpful! I‘m with @Chrissyreadit it just reminded me why I am so frustrated about food (& not crazy) My take aways so far are the same as when I started. Do the best I can to reduce processed foods/eat fresh foods when possible. I disagree with him about weight and exercise.I think exercise is critical to health and weight control. Can‘t change the industry, but can try to make small changes 3mo
PageShifter It's comforting to read your comments. I have not read about these things before, so I liked how this book got me to think more what I am really eating. And got me to understand more what's happening in the backgroung (food industry). But I also got the feeling that this book wasn't offering solutions, and it seems I wasn't the only one thinking that. 3mo
Larkken You could really tell in this section that this started as a podcast. I agree that it was preachy and redundant. I'm with you, @jenniferw88 that it made me start looking at labels again rather than just buying the thing with the "best" health claims, so I guess there's that! 3mo
Larkken @TheBookHippie super infuriating how he only seems to be speaking to people with money/access. I'm still confused what he says the dif is between a food desert and a food swamp, but i know I've lived in a food desert and the struggle is real for people who live closer to ten fast food restaurants than to any grocery store, and he is clearly not speaking to the people without cars or who can't otherwise leave the area. 3mo

Larkken Maybe the wrong section to talk about this (I've finished and returned the book already so can't check) but I did find interesting the parts on smell and how additives esp those related to odor is hampering our natural self-selecting abilities. I've always felt really strongly that cravings should tell us something about what we need, and have had that feeling supported during pregnancy, so liked seeing some sort of science behind it. 3mo

Listening to the audio for the #naturalitsy buddy read and this comment jumped at me: “Was the food made to nourish you, or was the food made to make money for a group of people?” I know there would be nuances to this- but there can also be some clear cases of items labeled food that really should not be sold or eaten but are.

IndoorDame I thought about that idea too because most of the UPC I eat is genuinely both, but every so often I reach for something that‘s what my mother would have called junk food and those things were always only business ventures 3mo

Tamra Right now I‘m also concerned about the microplastics in food, given just opening a bag distributed particles in the air & on/in food. I‘ve been reducing plastic at home for a long time, but it‘s nearly impossible at the grocery store! 3mo

I finished this one :) I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the next discussion on this book. I found myself discussing it with my husband as well. I enjoyed that it didn't feel preachy at all. Talking a bit about the farming practices made me lean back towards when I was a vegan (maybe I will transition towards vegetarian or pescatarian - vegan was so hard to follow). #NaturalLitsy @AllDeBooks

IndoorDame I wouldn‘t make any drastic changes to my diet. But having been advised to cut out wheat and gluten several years ago even though I‘m not celiac, I might do a trial of adding them back in to see if it was easier to reduce UPF that way, and to see which seemed to make me feel worse… 3mo

rockpools There were a few bits in this section that I found intriguing and/or surprising. The idea that we burn the same calories pretty much, however active we are - I mean, REALLY?? In some ways I quite like it as a theory- it means if I‘m not losing weight, the exercise is doing me good in other ways, and that‘s kind of reassuring. (And obvs, food is even more important) But it feels like it goes against everything we‘ve been taught ever. 3mo
rockpools The stuff about food poverty, and food deserts/swamps was quite tough to read - the sheer numbers (almost a million people in the uk lack a fridge, almost 2 million no cooker 🤯)! It‘s a complete tangent to the purpose of the book, but (especially after conversations about some of our young customers) I feel like I need to find out more abt food poverty locally, and what support there is. 3mo
PageShifter I maybe wouldn't change anything based on this book only, but I love how it made me to think more about several things. Yes @rockpools that was quite something :D I don't believe that's true though. I know people who run maratons and they eat a lot - still being thin. That wouldn't be possible if they really would consume the same than those who doesn't work out. 3mo
TheBookHippie I didn‘t learn anything new although I had to study this in depth when I was diagnosed with RA . Food deserts are awful, we have massive fresh foods here but they cost way too much for most ppl. I am listening to the audio version, so I am enjoying hearing his voice and words and is passion re: this topic. 🥫 I was aware of the food desert concerns, and it's just sad that some of our most richest nations have such food poverty. 🥫 I have such a horrible time with diets. I struggle with my relationship with food/body/etc. I have been making small lifestyle changes to help, need to work on empty calories. 3mo
Bluebird @rockpools and @PageShifter i also took issue with his theory that we burn the same calories regardless of exercise. Evidence supports otherwise. It actually made me question all his other theories! This book hasn‘t inspired me to make lots of changes, but I‘ve always subscribed to the theory of everything in moderation and fresh foods are better whenever possible. Just do the best I can-which means I still eat a good amount processed foods. 3mo
Bluebird I agree there are concerns with ultra processing and look forward to more research. And now with the information about the prevalence of micro-plastics, which are also found to be in higher concentrations in processed foods makes it all that much worse. 🤯 3mo

I found this really eye opening and fascinating - particularly the bits about food regulation (or lack of), how and why UPF is so addictive, how some ingredients in UPF are made and what goes on without our conscious awareness really as we eat. The author states his intention in writing the book was so people can have knowledge and awareness and make their own informed decisions about what to eat. My other half is glad I‘ve finished reading it 🤣

#naturalitsy The science here was sound, easy to follow and the author was occasionally amusing, but he didn‘t present any facts or ideas or draw conclusions that I wasn‘t already familiar with. I‘d recommend this for people who don‘t have much background knowledge of current nutrition science and are interested in an overview.

Bluebird I‘m enjoying the audiobook. The author narrates…and his enthusiasm for the subject matter adds a lot. I think I would find it a bit too dry if I was reading it. 4mo

Finished Part 3, can't wait to hear what others thoughts are so far. I know one thing that has really hit home, I really need to limit (eliminate) my coke intake. I used to never drink it, it was water, coffee (black), or wine (red); but then I got hooked back on the soda.

TEArificbooks I started by switching to Coke Zero sugar to reduce the sugar intake at least. I just like flavor to much. I drink water and tea mostly. But I don‘t drink coffee and need the caffeine from coke sometimes. I do like sparkling water with flavor but it goes flat so quickly. 4mo

This was an interesting read - thought-provoking!

Basically this had same things told over and over again, but from different views. But the author explained at the end why book had to be this long: you have to tell what are the facts that your opinions are based on.

I loved how this wasn't preachy, it just wanted to open my eyes. I knew some things already, but I also started to think some things more and got new things to ponder.

Aimeesue @Tamra Van Tulleken points out early on that almost all food is processed in some way, except for maybe some wild berries, mushrooms and oysters. The bigger concern is the ULTRA processed, commercially-driven foods, designed for low cost manufacture and stability for transport. I‘m looking forward to reading about the health studies focused on those kinds of foods! 4mo

This is not the type of books I normally read. I usually avoid food and diet books like the plague, but I had heard good things about this and thought I would give it a try. Van Tulleken reads the audio book himself which was great, he even has recorded conversations w/ his twin about their experiences and experiments. I love his approach around processed foods - we cannot avoid it, there is zero shame, but we all need to be educated on where 👇

ChaoticMissAdventures It comes from, the history of it, and what it does to us. I really appreciated his look in how most research we have is funded by big food corporations. And while I went in knowing most of what he would say (processed foods are bad) he laid things out in a fresh and enlightened way. 4mo

rockpools I‘m finding this very readable so far, if gross at times, but the author is a tad heavy-handed - feels like he‘s justifying every example, whilst attempting to explain all of science. The idea that there‘s a type of food that exists primarily for profit is just dystopian! It‘s certainly making me think more about labels, and put things back on the shelf. I‘m interested to know what happens to his body at the end of his UPF ‘diet‘. 4mo

He really wants me to understand what he is saying and why he is saying it. 🍩 With the broken leg and inability to really pick my meals or read labels, this hasn't changed our dinners. I don't really eat a lot of “prepackaged“ food - my husband likes to cook. But from hearing this information I know the ingredients would be UPF.

ElizaMarie 🍩 I feel well, as a society, know that food companies are trying to sell a product. I think the packaging is so confusing thought. He talks about high UPF content but then has labels stating “low fat“ or “low cholesterol“ and stuff like that. I think, if anything, it confuses me even more. UPF is “needed“ d/t our lifestyles, our refrigerating needs, our home lives, and stuff like that. We can't 'not“ have them. I don't know... Confusion. 4mo

Bluebird I agree with @rockpools that the author seems a bit heavy handed. The definition for UPF is too broad & too convoluted. the NOVA system is not fully tested and I think more research needs to be done before we can say that ALL these products are the problem. I think a huge % of UPF fall into the high fat, high salt and high sugar categories & still believe these are major contributors-and those seem to be mostly what he was eating. 4mo
Bluebird Not surprised to hear that the big food co‘s develop products that are as cheap as possible to drive up their profits and to get us to eat more of the items/get hooked. Who can eat just one cookie, chip, etc.. Am interested to read the rest of this book. It hasn‘t changed my eating patterns. Still believe whole foods and eating lower fat, salt and sugar items are best. Hope this book spurs more research into UPF so we can determine what to avoid 4mo

I have not changed anything for this book, but actually I have been aware of some things even before starting to read this. I think this is making me think about what I am eating even more. Too many variables of ppl dna autoimmune systems etc we all know we should eat whole food -then you look at what‘s in the ground the soil etc. Perfect food scenarios are for the people who have time money access. And the packaging that says “fat-free“ or talks about the health benefits of certain foods, just ugh! It's like his whole discussion on cereals. I know portion size is a crazy thing where we are now.

ElizaMarie I think I t has been inspiring me to ask my husband to incorporate more whole foods into our diet (I am not able to do any of the shopping at this time). My nutrition is atrocious; part of why I passed out, fell, and broke my leg was because my iron intake is so low (I am severely anemic and pass out often); so... I know I need to work on the proper foods. @AllDeBooks - I love the discussion aspect of this book! 4mo

rockpools @TheBookHippie Your comment above re perfect food scenarios - YES! I‘m getting a lot from the book, and I think it will change how I eat, but it‘s very all-or-nothing, this good, that bad. Meanwhile, in the real world, life‘s complicated, and balancing family health/diet requirements adds a whole other layer. I‘ve taken a step back and will be attempting a slightly better job, rather than guilt-tripping about not doing a perfect job. (edited) 4mo
TheBookHippie @rockpools my nutritionist told me if you switch one thing or ten percent it‘s a start, try to work to 50 percent change and stay there awhile- see if you feel the difference. So I‘ve lived by that until 2022 and got Covid and then long Covid. I‘m just now starting new way to eat and move again. All or nothing isn‘t for all of society. It‘s just not applicable. 4mo

Reading this book the other day and my partner says he knows when I‘m REALLY liking a book as I “find every minute of the day to read it - even if it‘s 1 minute. Talk about it …. A effin lot. Talk about it and tell me I should read it, or read a paragraph or a sentence. ALOT.” 😂

Soubhiville Hi! I am fine with books being chosen any way! I tend to only join reads when I have the time due to being in several bookclubs 🤪📚. I don‘t do the winter/solstice challenge or events, and I probably wouldn‘t participate in one here, again just due to time. I have enjoyed reading along and chatting about the ones I‘ve read! ElizaMarie I love the idea of knowing books ahead of time so I can schedule them in. But also, I am not the most huge participator when things get super busy. But that‘s why I want to plan things better 4mo
DebinHawaii I am new to the group with #MidWinterSolace as I was looking for a quieter, easier group to join in & help brighten the holidays which it did immensely, so thank you for that. I would like to continue & join in the readalongs & always appreciate knowing titles in advance so I can plan & source books. Hooked_on_books I agree with the crowd about the benefit of knowing the books in advance. Especially new, popular titles with long holds (like the January pick, which I can‘t get in time). I don‘t participate in the other activities and don‘t expect to and I‘ve already overcommitted myself to challenges for next year, though in general I do think challenges are fun. 4mo
Bluebird @AllDebooks whatever works best for you is fine for me. 😀 I appreciate all your efforts in organizing these. Even announcing the books quarterly will help in planning. I too get most books from the library so I often have a 1-2 month wait to get the loans. I am trying to limit my commitments this year in order to bring down my TBR list, but I‘ve enjoyed reading along with you all when I have the time. 4mo

Listened to our potential December #NaturaLitsy pick early since my library hold came through. This is not a diet book. Explores how ultra-processed food is changing our lives and bodies (and planet) and looks at our flawed, complicated food system. Interesting, shocking, disgusting, enraging—definitely worth a read!

Tamra 🤔 I already have to wage a losing battle with my kids re: junk food. This might send me over the top. 😝 6mo

"It's just a thickener." "It stabilizes the product." "It improves mouth feel." "It boosts protein content." We hear these kind of things, justifying the ever-increasing list of ingredients in packaged foods, and we are helpless to do anything about it because we're already hooked. Convenience, cost, availability, and the insidious rewiring of our brains that make us crave ultra processed foods that will never satisfy.

CampbellTaraL We underestimate the resources corporations have at their disposal to ensure profits continue to grow. And the only way they do is if we buy more. Of course they're going to configure the product so that we want more of it, it's capitalism. The worst part is what is happening in poorer countries: displacing cultural food systems, indoctrinating people as babies, and leaving them entirely dependent food-like substances that are killing us all. 9mo
