Watching #VirtualJaneCon and catching up on #pemberlittens feed with my Austen mug today! The perfect end to my rather chaotic week.

Here's a link to our very own @REPollock's incredible bonnet video! I am in love with the Charlotte Lucas bonnet they created for the theater they work for. 😍

https://youtu.be/281PVjfYCKU

I also loved Dr. Elizabeth Rands' look at gender subversion in P&P! It's a happy day.

REPollock Thank you for sharing my bonnet and I‘m glad you enjoyed the event! I loved it and will gladly take part again next year. 2y
REPollock Also that gender subversion one was amazing. 2y

REPollock @Linsy I wish I‘d known about this event in prior years, this is it‘s third year! Such a fantastic idea for an accessible event and I like that the programming spans from the literary to the historical to the fandom-y. 2y
Linsy Me too!!! I watched last year and loved it so much. It looks like it's even bigger this year! Makes my littlw Jane Austen heart so happy 2y

Emma | Jane Austen

Post 3 of 3
#PemberLittens

Enter Mr. Knightley, the sensible intimate friend of the family, also the older brother of Emma‘s sister‘s husband. Knightley walks over (to Mr. Woodhouse‘s utter astonishment) to bring news that Isabella‘s family is well, to wish them joy after the Weston wedding and to argue with Emma as to whether her claims of matchmaking the couple are valid. Knightley seems to relish in finding fault and/or arguing with Emma.

TheBookHippie He cracks me up 🤣👏🏼 3y

OriginalCyn620 Love this meme! 🤣🤣🤣 3y
MaureenMc I love it when Emma references “a fanciful and troublesome creature,” & Mr. Woodhouse thinks she‘s speaking about him. 😄 3y
inthegreensandblues "Mr. Knightley, in fact, was one of the few people who could see faults in Emma Woodhouse, and the only one who ever told her of them." ❤️ 3y
Liatrek I love this first chapter❤️ The dialogue between Emma and Mr Knightly is so fun to read. Can you add me to the chapter a day post please🙂 3y
batsy I love Mr. Knightley & his introduction adds an immediate zing! to the proceedings 😆 Though because Emma is the one I've re-read the least, I think, I had a 😳 moment when I contemplated the age difference between him and Emma (I know it's standard in her fiction and for the time, but...) 3y
sprainedbrain @batsy yes, 16 years is a lot! 3y
LitStephanie I was struck by Mr. Woodhouse's extreme anxiety. He would be medicated today. 3y
LitStephanie @batsy me too; I didn't remember there being such an age difference. 3y
meghathecloud @sprainedbrain I have been very absent from litsy, so missed asking you to tag me in Emma chapter a day posts. Tag me please?! 3y
Chrissyreadit Yes- when I was a kid age difference was still not creepy, but now we know so much more- and it‘s clearly one more way to maintain a patriarchy stranglehold. 3y
sprainedbrain @Chrissyreadit yesterday as part of the #VirtualJaneCon I watched a presentation exploring whether or not Knightley groomed Emma. It definitely made me 😮😬. 3y
Chrissyreadit @sprainedbrain I think we would recognize that today in a horrible way- but in Austin‘s time what would her motivation be for writing the characters that way? I wonder if it would be because marrying a young man may not have been a consideration, and also she did not have someone guiding her on her faults- the way a mother or older sister might. That being said- grooming would have been part of the role of a male (I suspect) 3y
Chrissyreadit Also I‘ve not been able to watch Janecon and I‘m very bummed. 3y
sprainedbrain @Chrissyreadit I think they are all still out there on YouTube if you want to watch anything from the program. There are a few today that I will miss live but plan to watch later. 😊 3y
Chrissyreadit Ohh! Yes I will look! Let me know if your watching tonight and I might too- we can text discuss them 3y
mollyrotondo Okay so I see some people mentioned that Knightley groomed one Emma. I never thought that way because I really always liked Knightley and I consider them to be old family friends (and the of course 😍) but I will definitely keep this grooming point in mind as I reread 3y
sprainedbrain @mollyrotondo I don‘t know that I think he did... it was just a presentation I watched for virtual JaneCon. I like Knightley too! 3y
mollyrotondo @sprainedbrain yeah I‘m not sold on this theory 😂 I always believed he was the only friend who saw her for who she really is, all her faults, recognized these faults and pointed them out to her but loved her for all of it. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Oh dear. I‘m behind but I might have to go back and reread this chapter because I think I confused Mr. Woodhouse and Mr. Knightley. 😳 3y
sprainedbrain @Clare-Dragonfly oh dear! 3y

Last night was Emma (and ohmygosh I love that movie and have watched it twice now)...

Tonight at 9 CST we are watching 2005‘s Pride & Prejudice (you know, the one with the best Darcy, by just a nose) to wrap up an excellent second day of #VirtualJaneCon.

The discussion/watch party will be happening in the Drunk Janeites Facebook group, if you‘re so inclined to join us. 🥳

Daisey I completely forgot about this. Just joined in to watch! 4y

Stolen from Drunk Austen. 😉🤣

Is anyone else taking part in #VirtualJaneCon today and tomorrow? I really loved the Instragam livestream by the wonderful Soniah Kamal and the YouTube livestream by Courtney Birnbaum about adaptations. I‘ve rented the new Emma movie and can‘t wait to watch it tonight with the live tweet! 🥳

I‘m wondering if I should try starting a virtual JA book club, or just binge the books/adaptations all on my lonesome.🤔

Librarybelle I just watched the video about Jane and her popularity and her fandom...so good! And, if you decide to start up a virtual JA Club, count me in! 4y
ravenlee I did a long-distance, email-based JA book club with my MIL and her sisters and various other women in the family last summer. It was...excruciating. But I don‘t hold anything against Jane! 4y
CrowCAH If you do want to host a virtual Jane Con, I‘ll help ya out! ☺️ 4y

Chrissyreadit I would participate in a virtual JA book club to the best of my ability. 4y
Amandajoy I would be curious about a virtual JA book club. I‘m currently reading an Austen adjacent book, so it‘s appropriate. Also, I‘m pretty sure there‘s a reference to Persuasion in it that makes me want to reread that one. (edited) 4y
sprainedbrain @ravenlee oh, now I‘m curious! Can you elaborate on why it was excruciating? 😂 4y
sprainedbrain @Librarybelle @CrowCAH @Chrissyreadit @Amandajoy I have a whole pile of Austenesque novels and retellings on my tbr, and so many adaptations that I haven‘t seen. I‘ve been thinking very seriously about rereading all of the novels, too, so maybe this could be something fun and multimedia if several of us wanted to have a club. Everyone could have a say and nominate books, movies, etc. 🤔 4y
sprainedbrain @Amandajoy I liked Death Comes to Pemberley! Both for the continued story of Lizzie and Darcy, and for the fun mystery. 😃 4y
Librarybelle That sounds exciting! 4y
ravenlee Partly because there was no schedule, so whichever book we were reading, someone would spontaneously send out a set of questions in an email, then there‘d be a flurry of responses, but while I was thinking about my own response the next day they‘d all move on and then I‘d get a “reminder” message from my MIL that I‘m supposed to be participating. 4y
ravenlee And partly because I was expecting book club or literary analysis discussion (English degree here) but they all wanted to discuss which JA character is most likely to embroider best and then they all wrote their own little stories with themselves as JA-type characters (all funny but ridiculous) and I just didn‘t have the attention span for that. 4y
ravenlee They then moved on to Ayn Rand (their mom loved her books and they all find them hilarious) and more recently Little House on the Prairie. I begged off for both. It was all just kind of crazy (the women on that side of the family are all kind of crazy, but most of the time we call it eccentric). 4y
sprainedbrain @ravenlee OMG that does sound excruciating! 😬 4y
CrowCAH @sprainedbrain sounds like you have some great ideas already! 👍🏻 4y
