One Afternoon | Sian James
post image

Here are my two choices for December 2025. I‘ve wanted to read Lady Rose ever since learning that it was a favorite of the Queen Mum‘s. One Afternoon sounds interesting, and this would give me an excuse to buy a copy. 😄

#PersephoneClub

rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen A package from Johnny Bergen arrived yesterday. Please tell him I‘ll be a good girl and wait until Christmas to open it. 🐶♥️ 2w
elkeOriginal Lady Rose is one of my favorite books ever! Would happily reread. But my vote goes to Afternoon - so I can buy a copy without guilt and blame y‘all 😉 2w

rubyslippersreads @elkeOriginal I love to use Littens as enablers. 😆 2w
elkeOriginal @rubyslippersreads And they are always happy to oblige😉 2w
Cathythoughts Both sound great. I‘ll go for 2w
Tamra Now that @elkeOriginal lauded Lady Rose, I have to vote for it! 2w
LeahBergen I‘ll let Johnny know it arrived safely. 😉 2w
LeahBergen I‘ve read Lady Rose so (like @elkeOriginal ) I‘ll vote for the one I‘ll “have” to buy for myself. 😆 2w
CarolynM These choices are hard! 2w
Bookbuyingaddict Iv read one afternoon it is wonderful ! How can this wonderful writer not be more widely known thank goodness 😅 for Persephone I won‘t vote as I‘m happy with either 😀😍 1w
LeahBergen And the winner is One Afternoon! 1w
rubyslippersreads Good thing I was proactive and ordered a copy from eBay before the voting was finished. 🤣 1w

The Far Cry | Emma Smith
post image

This was a low pick for me. Interesting, but depressing. My favorite character was Miss Spooner, followed by the tiger, who should have eaten Richard while it had the chance. 😏

This isn‘t my copy(I read the ebook), but I certainly prefer the grey Persephone cover over this artwork. The photo depicts tea harvesting in 1945.

Donna, thank you so much for the Ozzy book gift. I haven‘t heard of the tagged book, but I look forward to reading it. And the ruby-red journal is fabulous! (Especially with the text hidden in the lines.) And all just in time for the Wicked movie. 👠🌈🧹

I can‘t believe we‘re already choosing books for 2025! Here are my picks for January.

I enjoyed this, especially Verily‘s attitude of “just getting on with it.”

I‘m including the “cosy, silvery barrage-balloons” because they reminded me of my mom telling me that she and her girlfriends walked by some every day on their way to school. They each picked one and named it after a movie star; my mom‘s was Humphrey, for Humphrey Bogart. 😄

Any Littens with fond memories of Dark Shadows? @UwannaPublishme and I are starting a #buddyread of the tagged book, and we‘d be thrilled to have you join us for our journey back to Collinwood.

We‘re starting today with the Foreword by DS actress Kathryn Leigh Scott and Introduction by the author. A chapter a day after that, but please feel free to jump in at any time. 🦇

#hometoshadows #TheresNoPlaceLikeCollinwood

MemoirsForMe Yay! I‘m ready! 7mo
MemoirsForMe Perfect to have Kathryn Leigh Scott write the foreword! It‘s stirring up so many memories already! My cousin was one of the many fans who hung out outside the NY studio. She‘d call us and report the scoop. I was so jealous when she met Chris Jennings (the first werewolf). I thought he was so cute. I also love how Dan Curtis consulted the fans about a story arc. We did get so immersed in the details, didn‘t we? 7mo
See All 10 Comments
CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme I don‘t remember Chris Jennings. Hmm. I guess that sexy Quentin Collins played by David Selby erased him from my memory.🐺 7mo
MemoirsForMe @CatLass007 You‘ll have to Google the actor who played Chris (Don Briscoe) and see what you think. But I agree, Quentin is a hottie too. ☺️ 7mo
CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme I was looking at the IMDb pages for Dark Shadows and several of the actors. I discovered that David Selby is from my home state of West Virginia. And there was a story going around town that Jonathan Frid had moved to my hometown and opened an antique store. I have no idea if it was true. For some reason Mom didn‘t want to drive around town looking for him. 😁 7mo
CatLass007 @UwannaPublishme Okay, I just googled Jonathan Frid and there‘s no mention of his ownership of an antique store in West Virginia or anywhere else. Urban legend. 7mo

Am I the only one who thought the introduction comparing this to Agatha Christie was a bit much? I enjoyed it, but felt like I could see what was coming a mile away. It was much more Gothic romance to me than murder mystery. And Cynthia might be the dopiest Gothic heroine I‘ve ever encountered. 😂

Jess_Read_This Oh geez, I skipped the intro and am glad I missed that comparison. From what I‘ve read so far this no comparison at all. Not even in the remotest of possibilities is this novel comparable to a Christie mystery. 7mo

I‘m a bit late for #5JoysFriday (and #4 isn‘t true today, although it gives me the joy of an excuse to stay in and read. 😸)

Thanks for the tag, @DebinHawaii 😘

DebinHawaii A great & joyful list! 💛💛💛 And while sunny days are full of joy, I like the joy in a rainy day to read too! Thanks for joining in! 🤗 8mo

Anna and Her Daughters | D.E. Stevenson
post image

I enjoyed this, but like other Littens, I didn‘t really care for the direction the second half took. I loved Mrs. Millard, Margaret, and Miss Smith and her dolls. Val improved once he met Chairley. I thought it was odd that Anna almost completely disappeared from the story, even though her name is in the title.

But I sure didn‘t think Ronnie was the prize all the sisters thought he was. 😏

#FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

jlhammar Yes, agree completely! Fun to see the different covers. I hadn‘t seen the one on the left yet. 9mo
Ruthiella No, Ronnie was no prize! I would have preferred Jane finding a new love. Everything else could have happened. 9mo

rubyslippersreads @jlhammar I think that cover kind of gives away the plot. 😏 9mo
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella It was like the author thought her readers would expect a “romantic” ending. 9mo
julieclair I agree about the cover giving away the plot. That always annoys me! 9mo
CarolynM You‘ve summed it up so well👏 9mo
batsy Was wondering about the vanishing of Anna, too 😆 And Ronnie is definitely no prize. Those covers are lovely! 9mo
LeahBergen Just how I felt! I was a bit over Ronnie by the end. 😆 9mo
Jess_Read_This @batsy @LeahBergen The allure of Ronnie was lost on my by the end too. He couldn‘t make up his mind on Helen. He is in the U.K. And sees Jane but it‘s a short visit and can‘t make the time to see his son, plus the way he treats the African staff was wrong. He is no prize. 9mo
Jess_Read_This @Ruthiella Agree!! I just wrote something similar. Too bad things didn‘t work out with Jane‘s American stargazer beau. 9mo
Ruthiella @Jess_Read_This So many romantic possibilities…all wasted! 😆 9mo
rubyslippersreads @Ruthiella @Jess_Read_This And all because of Ronnie. ☹️ 9mo

I ended up enjoying this, although I got a bit tired of Evelina‘s worshipful letters to her foster father. She was almost too good (and sometimes too naive) to be true . I also found the twist at the end pretty unbelievable.

I loathed Mme DuVal and the Branghtons. Captain Mirval was a jerk, but sometimes funny. Clement was a creep, and Lord Orville was, like Evelina, almost too good to be true. So I guess they were meant to be together. ⬇️

Deblovestoread What a beautiful edition 💜💚💜 9mo
rubyslippersreads ⬆️ I‘ve always wanted to read this book—thanks to @TheAromaOfBooks for organizing this group read.

Pictured is my mom‘s copy, published in 1904. I love the Hugh Thomson illustrations.

TheAromaofBooks Oh what a fun edition!! Thank you for reading along with me!! I did overall enjoy this one, but definitely found the pacing to be uneven. The sections with Evelina's terrible relatives...!!!!! Way too long 😂 9mo
LeahBergen Beautiful edition! 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly Oh, I love the illustrations! Thanks for sharing them! 9mo

I don‘t know anything about this book except that it involves three favorite Litten authors, Jane Austen, Mrs. Gaskell, and Charlotte Brontë. And it‘s free for #Kindle today. #ebook #kindlefreebie

lil1inblue I'm intrigued! Thanks for sharing! 10mo
ElizaMarie Thanks for posting this. It sounds right up my alley. I just “bought“ it. 10mo

I was gone all day yesterday and came home to find these lovely (and color-coordinated 😁) birthday gifts from @LeahBergen .

The Pangur Ban book is intriguing (the look on that cat‘s face!) And I‘ve been wanting the LMM Short stories for ages. What I love about both these books is that I can just dip in and out of them as the fancy strikes me. ⬇️

rubyslippersreads You know my addiction to stickers and washi tape. And that card is absolutely frameable. 😻

Thank you so much, dear friend and kindred spirit. 😘

LeahBergen You‘re so welcome! You‘ll have to let me know what‘s making Pangur Ban look so nonplussed. 😆 The LMM stories seem very interesting; the forwards to each story describe how much she reuses certain plot devices and how some are based on her own life. I hope you had a wonderful day! 😘😘 10mo

I don‘t know if I would have picked this book on my own, because the subject matter was so painful. But I absolutely raced through it, and would definitely try other books by this author.

Tamra Yes! I‘m curious about her other titles. It was certainly a fast paced, agonizing thriller. 11mo
Tamra Was this made into a film? I can see it working. 11mo
rubyslippersreads @Tamra Yes, I think back in the 80s. Unfortunately, I can only find it on Starz, which I don‘t have, or I‘d watch it. 11mo

LeahBergen I was thinking the same thing about the subject matter. 😬 I‘ll be starting right after I finish my IRL bookclub pick (as I know I‘ll want to read it straight through)! 11mo
Cathythoughts Yes , I agree. It‘s a difficult read. But so good. I raced through as well.. must put up my review too. So well written 👍🏻❤️ 11mo
Cathythoughts I want to try other books by her too. But I‘m finding it hard to get them.. 11mo
jlhammar Yes, so painful, but I‘m so impressed by the writing and completely gripped so far. Can‘t wait to get back to it this evening. I was also wishing I could watch the film, but I don‘t have Starz either. 11mo
elkeOriginal I remember the movie! When I read the book summary I immediately remembered it and had to look it up. Judd Hirsch as the detective. 11mo
Caryl I felt the same way! I was hesitant to give it a try, but I decided to trust Persephone Books -- and all of you! I'm very glad I read it. (I bet Judd Hirsch was a great Detective Menetti. And Stockard Channing as Jocelyn!) 10mo
