pickThis is a keenly incisive book, particularly striking as the narration has a sort of dreamlike quality, and the narrator herself is not entirely reliable. A dystopian world, but one not that far from ours—especially given the current state of politics. Looking at the US‘s Project 2025, it‘s even more striking. And terrifyingly realistic tbh. Certainly still a prescient and clever read, even so long after original publication—and a great reread.

Offred navigates a society where women aren‘t allowed to read, write or express themselves in society & are reduced to breeding potential while she recalls her life before. Atwood used historical touch points (which are too relevant today) to show how society changes & can bow to extremists even in a short time. Looking forward to the discussion!

Here's an example of a book that gets lots of hype and seems to be very much at the top of the recommendation lists, but was just meh for me. I found the parallels between Atwood's distopian future and our current times rather terrifying in many ways; however, as far as the storyline goes I guess I was expecting more. Not sure what that would be exactly, just that as a whole it fell a little flat. Still glad I read it though. #audiobook

So not a fan of book banning! Lots of these I haven‘t heard of, but the number of kids books on this list is astounding, yet not at all surprising. I‘ve always let my girls read anything they were interested in reading, just as my parents did with me when I was growing up.

An important and terrifying book right now because it is so topical! But I don‘t think there will ever be a time this won‘t be controversial, because a story where a repressive counter-regime has both already risen and fallen in recent memory is always going to imply a vague threat to both “sides” of the political divide.
“When we think of the past it's the beautiful things we pick out. We want to believe it was all like that.”

pickQuite a chilling tale of a possible future dystopia from the viewpoint of a handmaid, Offred (belonging to Fred). Womens rights are greatly restricted and some men are in total control. I haven't seen the movie or the TV series but I have looked at the recent graphic novel. I recommend it for open-minded adults or older teens. Reminds me of 1984 a bit.
Starting this book that is often banned. I haven‘t seen any of the modern TV series but I know a little bit about it. Hope it never comes to be!

I just rewatched season 1 of the screen adaption of The Handmaid‘s Tale and I have to say, there is some serious sh*t going on in the US today that uncomfortably resembles Atwood‘s dystopia. On multiple fronts. 🥹

I was at the hairdresser yesterday and they had Monocle issue 164, June 2023, art special, inside they had an interview with Atwood, and it says:
“The American Library Association lists The Handmaid‘s Tale as one of the country‘s most regularly banned books; to illustrate the point, Penguin Random House even produced a special edition of the novel made from fireproof paper and filmed the author blasting it with a frame-thrower.”
I had no idea.
pick(1985) Here's another in my list of books-I've-sometimes-pretended-to have-read-already. It's brilliant, chilling, and holy dystopia Batman it feels more relevant now than I imagine it would have done in 1985.
