Really, really struggling at work atm. You might think that, in a hospital, during a global pandemic, people would start making a tiny effort to respect your personal space, but nah. A porter fully barged into the back of me when I was going in this morning (through the one entrance all staff now have to use, in a big hospital). But hey, he was wearing a mask!

arlenefinnigan My line manager apparently thinks it's hilarious that the cleaner makes me so uncomfortable. "oh I did laugh when you told him he was supposed to be 2 metres away!" "he was crawling under my desk. While I was sitting at it." "hahahaha! Some people would like that!" Seriously? This is OK? Am I in a Carry On Film? 5y

arlenefinnigan Meanwhile, while over half the office have been sent to work from home, the ones that are left are making a special effort to pick up the slack, chatter wise. It's all day, every day. I don't know how they don't give themselves headaches. They sure give me one. 5y

arlenefinnigan Unfortunately my husband is also an extrovert, so when I try to talk to him about how unhappy I am and how much I'm struggling, he rolls his eyes and makes it clear I'm making a fuss over nothing. Which makes it all the more unfair that he gets to work from home and I have to go into a office with shrieking banshees all day. 5y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I totally understand... the struggle is real and it doesn‘t look like it‘s going away any time soon unfortunately. I‘m a nurse and I work in our transfer center and our hospital is on hospital diversion! 5y

Bookwomble I usually work at a different community clinic each day, but as they're all closed and I can work by phone during lockdown, I'm now based in one place, pretty much on my own. I feel for you, Arlene 💗 5y

MicheleinPhilly Ugh! I‘m sorry you have to deal with that under “normal” circumstances. You certainly don‘t need any additional stress when we‘re all at the breaking point. Mindless chatter just to fill dead air is one of my pet peeves. 5y

MicheleinPhilly I‘m thankfully remote 100% but I have a colleague that will drone on about the most pointless stuff for 20 minutes during every meeting. She never SHUTS UP! When we‘ve been doing the Zoom calls I spend the entire thing staring at my own face so I don‘t “accidentally” roll my eyes. 5y

arlenefinnigan They're getting me a work laptop so that I can work from home, and it's been suggested that if I need to come into to office to work on casenotes I should come in of an evening, after people have gone home. Happy days 😃 5y

MicheleinPhilly Sadly Pickles loves being on camera so that just inspires them to gush. I have however surreptitiously phoned myself so they can hear the phone ring and then I say, “Sorry, I have to take that.” 😈 5y

CBee @arlenefinnigan @MicheleinPhilly did y‘all see the story about the gal who accidentally made herself a potato during a Zoom meeting? It was some setting on her computer or phone and she couldn‘t figure out how to change it 😂😂 So she was a potato. At a work meeting 😁😂 5y

arlenefinnigan @CBee 🤣 when Aisling Bea was on The Last Leg a few weeks ago, she put in the potato filter, then when she turned it off she was wearing a potato suit 🤣 5y

The main thing I've learned from the last few days is that extroverts would honestly rather die and/or kill you than respect your personal space.

A lot of this illustrated guide to introverts was spot on for me. Sometimes when our culture seems to value extrovert qualities more, it‘s comforting to see introvert qualities normalized. It ended up being a so-so because I was expecting a little more humor. Quick read. I‘m also an INFJ like the author (occasionally an INFP).

marleed I hated those deliberately bonding moment meetings so much that I volunteered for a 2-week long intense course on how to conduct such meetings hoping that if I truly understood it I would be a better participant. Well that was 2 weeks I‘ll never get back. (edited) 5y

marleed @arlenefinnigan I did leave the course with my certificate and a better understanding of the attempt to build a cohesive workplace. The alternative is a company that doesn‘t give a damn about about employee relations. And actually the training taught me to be a better person personally since the whole 2 weeks was about compassion first. 5y

I LOVED this. It absolutely talked my language. It's great to have someone say that being quite, needing alone time, needing time to think before speaking etc. aren't character flaws. "Be good to yourself, be true to yourself" is a great motto to live your life by.

batsy This is why I went freelance ... Not the smartest life decision in terms of benefits and being financially set for life, but I was slowly losing my mind in the office set up... 6y

Wow. I learned some things about myself from this Illustrated Guide to the Introverted Life. I never recognized why I‘m the “helper” at other people‘s parties (when I even make it) or why I can‘t come home from an event with no time to spare and go straight to bed. Must. Have. Time. To. Unwind.
