And done…which means I‘ll start posting about books again instead of just posting pictures of a Lego recreation of a setting from one of them. 😬😂 Pictures of the finished set tomorrow. Tonight it‘s all about Sauron‘s study & I must admit…he‘s a lot more studious than I would have thought! The pictures are a close up of the bottom level & then upper level of the “study” in the tower. Last is a full view of tower before exterior pieces added.

The building continues and we are now out of the kitchen and into the throne room. The cool thing about this floor is that when you pull the little knob, visible at the bottom of the top right picture, the throne opens to reveal the white tree from Minas Tirith. Some really great details in this set. Definitely a fun build and one that is distracting me from reading…something I‘m going to rectify right now….

Ok, we‘ve moved up out of the dungeon and into the kitchen and thank goodness we can be a little less worried about the lava up here! 🥵😅 I‘ve included a general view of the two levels, a close up of the kitchen, a portrait or three more fabulous orcs and/assorted minions, and finally another drawer (?) to pull out to revel a secret. The detail on the set is pretty fabulous. I‘ll make sure the next update includes some exterior shots.

I‘m reading, just not as much as I‘m completely distracted by this awesomeness. The first level (Book 1) is done. Pictures are of the front doors (which can be opened/closed by turning a gear, some Orcs, an imprisoned skeleton which can be lowered towards the “lava” and then pulled back up again by turning another gear, Shelob who is hiding but can be pulled out whenever you want and a close up of the first floor interior. It‘s a great set!

I listened to the original American National Public Radio broadcast and I loved it. An ensemble cast really brought the story to life. Coming in at 3 hours, I know it‘s abridged, so I won‘t be counting it toward my 1,001 books journey until I read it in full. This was just such a nice listen while I crocheted. ☺️

We finally finished this one! My husband and I started listening to this last July and will only listen to it during road trips.

Andy Serkis did a fantastic job but it's not easy to listen to this in a long sitting. We found ourselves constantly drifting with this one, which is not good for those who are driving. It was best to listen little by little.

This was a re-read for me but the hubby's first.

Happy Tolkien Reading Day! The Tolkien Society chose to focus on Service & Sacrifice as a theme this year. With that in mind, I‘m sharing this quote that I love about the small deeds of simple people being important in the matters of the world.

Additionally, today is Annunciation Day, recognized by the Catholic Church, and Lady Day, for a long time considered the beginning of the new year in England.

"I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains, and then find somewhere where I can rest..."

I've been so stressed with work lately. I've honestly been quoting this quote to my hubby almost every night. Today, he surprised me with a quick trip to the mountains so we can get some nature therapy and play in the snow.

Plus, we continued listening to the tagged book, which we started last year. It's taking us a while but that's okay.

After exactly seven years I'm rereading LotR, how fitting is that? And even though now I realise how male dominated the story is, I still loved every step I took with the Hobbits. Once again. It was the same feeling I had when I first read it. The narrator does a great job and I think his voice fits the story very well. Merry and Pippin are still my favorites, I can't help myself 😄 Already preordered the next audio book. Obviously.

Will l day that l loved it?
Doesn't seem as l need to. If you scroll down my feed, you'll find a few places where l have already said so 😂

Rather, l'd sped two words on the new Italian translation.
I'm sorry to say, l didn't enjoy it 🙁
⬇️

JazzFeathers It is very clear that the translator has no understanding of the fantasy language, let alone Tolkien's. His choice of words weren't inherently wrong, they still had no place in Middle-earth. Sentences that sounds like, "This is such a terrible news", or "Who knew we were so far ahead"... you know what l mean? You read these things and immediately, you're not in Middle-earth anymore. I laughed thrice reading The Council of Elrond ? 9mo
Daisey I‘m m sorry to hear this about the translation, but I‘m also not especially surprised based on your original comments about it. 9mo

Well, one could think, not a very eventful chapter, just people rowing in some boats. And yet so much happens here. Gollum.is revealed: Sam, Frodo and Aragorn knew it. the orcs, the Nazgul, the Argonath. Frodo trying to make a decision. Aragorn trying to make a decision. Boromir brooding.
It's just incredible.

#LotRChapterADay #FellowshipOfTolkien

It always annoys me when readers say there are too few women in Tolkien's work. That's simply not true. And anyway, if there were only Galadriel, l'd be more than satisfied. She's that good of a character.

In this chapter, we see both her power and her vulnerability, her wisdom and her ambition. All the phenomenal complexity of a very human and yet extremely ethereal being.

gossamerchild I would agree that Galadriel is amazing. I would've liked more of her, though. 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly I have to disagree with you there! The books have hardly any women compared to the number of men, and those that appear have very little screen time. Eowyn will play a more active role, but so far we‘ve had: Arwen, who exists to be a symbol for Aragorn (I don‘t think she even spoke during her brief appearance); Galadriel, who is awesome but mostly a remote power preparing to fade, on a pedestal rather than active on the ground; and Goldberry… 9mo
See All 24 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly … who is a force of nature and a hostess, and to some extent a motivation for Tom, rather than a character herself. Some of the male characters (like Elrond) are more forces than people too, but all of the characters so far who are fully drawn people are male. 9mo
JazzFeathers @gossamerchild l know. But Tolkien didn't know much more of her at the time either, at the time, l should guess 😂 9mo
JazzFeathers @Clare-Dragonfly As you imagine, l disagree 😜 Readers often judge the number of female characters in Tolkien by The Lord of the Rings, but there are plenty of female characters in The Silmarillion. And l disagree on the role of the characters you mentioned here. Galadriel is a Ringbearer, just like Elrond and Galdalf and she has a much more active part in Frodo's understanding of his task than, for example, Elrond. 9mo
JazzFeathers Also, if we look at Celeborn and her dynamics, it's quite clear to me that she is the more powerful (not uncommon in Tolkien's couple), she is also often mention before her husband. So it's not just a reader's perception, it's how she's perceived by her people too. As for Arwen, l don't know if this is your first read of the book, but towards the end she gets a dialogue with Frodo that, for me, is one of the most powerful in the book. 9mo
JazzFeathers Besides, l don't think it's fair to judge the weight of a character by their mere screen time. The importance of their actions is far more relevant to me. But l'd love to hear what others think 😁 @Daisey @wordslinger42 @BookwormAHN @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BethM @TheAromaOfBooks @Susanita @Roary47 @TheBookDream @dabbe @Vansa 9mo
Vansa Oh,this has always been one of my favourite soapboxes.I have always thought Tolkien has really powerful, interesting women, quite a rarity in fantasy-even Ursa LeGuin, writing decades after he did, centred men in her fantasy series(and derided women's magic as “weak as women's magic“).Eowyn is one of my favourite fictional characters ever,Galadriel has presence and such power, and all of them have agency. And no threat of sexual violence!(1/n) 9mo
Vansa If you take a lot of modern fantasy, for instance,George RR Martin has many women characters but his writing of them is,in many instances, quite icky, and they're overwhelmingly made to suffer sexual violence- something he doesn't make the male characters suffer. In a world where dragons exist, maybe writers don't need to throw in that much realism?!I agree, number of pages does not equal representation to me(2/n) 9mo
Vansa (3/n)Tolkien devotes a lot of attention to the landscapes, but that doesn't mean nature is the protagonist of the books!I would also argue that by their sheer absence, the Entwives are also given a lot of importance-they taught the rest of Middle Earth agriculture!I think the books have enough pivotal female characters to keep me happy.Patrick Rothfuss,or Robert Jordan,in my opinion, have far less well written female characters 9mo
JazzFeathers @Vansa It's very interesting what you say, because l've never really thought about it. Yes, of course every fantasy reader knows that fantasy is considered more of a masculine genre, but l never really thought how contemporary fantasy is really sexualised. What you said about Martin is true, thought l've never elaborated it. 9mo
JazzFeathers @Vansa But l've often thought that while most fantasy authors (men and women) portray female characters that are 'strong'because they act like men, Tolkien give value to many 'feminine' characteristics, that even men display. Aragorn, for example, displays caring, the ability to heal and rebuild, a love and respect for non-bookish knowledge. All 'feminine' characteristics. 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa To me Galadriel and Elrond play very equal roles in this trilogy. A way stop on the way, that imparts healing, rest, and much wisdom….as well as sets up the next section. Some of the divided views for women‘s roles in story I think come from those that have read the Silmarillion and other background information vs have not. Those that have imbibe them with very complex backstories that isn‘t really on the pages itself in LOTR. Both are right 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ from their POV. Arwen has always bothered me though, even with more Silmarillion story. She & Aragorn have a story that parallels one in their myth/history or Lúthien & Beren, but she doesn‘t get to be nearly as involved with their adventures as Lúthien did, which is a shame to me anyway. Now the next women to show up in the LOTR series (on its own, no backstory) is the one I enjoy reading the most, but she is also the only one that got ⤵️ 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ her own adventure in these 3 books. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 9mo
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa My impression about Arwen and Aragorn is that Tolkien really really wanted the story of Been and Luthien to be known, but he didn't know whether it would be because nobody seemed to be interested in publishing The Silmarillion. So he found a way to recount it even without recounting it. 9mo
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yet, last time l read The Lord of the Rings, when l read Arwen's dialogue with Frodo, l remember thinking, 'She only gets to speak here, but she gives such powerful speech that to me it's enough'. To me, Tolkien was trying to give her the same strength of heart and mind Luthien has despite Arwen's shrunk screen time. My impression 😜 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers I agree, but again… that strength only comes because we read all the other books and backstories and myths in detail. If you just read LOTR, alone, by itself, you couldn‘t put all that meaning into it. 🤷‍♀️ 9mo
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l think that part of the difficulty we have in seeing Tolkien's women's power is that in his stories the ability to renounce or let go is more powerful than the ability to conquer. And this is a very hard message to receive in our world, where renouncing and letting go is seen as the act of a weak person. 9mo
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l agree. Tolkien tried to the very last to have The Silmarillion published with Lord of the Rings, because it was one long story to him, and it was impossible to adequately understand LotR without the Silmarillion. He was apparently right. 9mo
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa So maybe it's up to our effort to see the story how he intended and that it's an accident of publication and popularity that may cause us to have a partial vision of the whole. Again, my own thoughts 😜 9mo
JazzFeathers @Vansa l forgot to tag you 😬 9mo

I enjoyed this chapter because we see here the fellowship taking shape. And also l liked the way the mountain becomes a character, similar to what happens in The Hobbit.

And l find it interesting that it's pointed out how there are forces that don't belong to any part (like Tom, too), because it's easy to think that in such epic battle, everyone must take a stand. It is not so. The world is bigger that that.

I have been listening to some Tolkien-focused podcasts and is it just me or is the worst fate for anything in Middle-earth to “fade.” Elves that don‘t return to Valinor: fade. Bilbo and Gollum spending too much quality time with the ring: fade.

The final chapter is not so much an ending as a transition to a new phase of the journey. These are often published as three books, but really it‘s one long story. At the moment, I‘m just sad to be waiting a few days to continue this epic journey with these characters.

BethM I‘m so glad we have more days! The hobbit extra days made me sad, but these ones I totally need😂 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was a little startled to reach the ending! Someday I‘ll read the LotR as one long book, as Tolkien intended. 9mo

Vansa @Clare-Dragonfly that's exactly what we're doing in this Read along😀 9mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Vansa We are taking breaks between books… and also I have to wait for my library hold on Two Towers to come in 😂 9mo
Daisey @bethm I get it! Sometimes I‘m so grateful, and other times, like today, I just want to jump into the next one. 9mo
Daisey @Clare-Dragonfly It does kind of sneak up on you here. I do consider this readalong reading them all as Tolkien intended as one story. The pauses are just to help keep all of us on track together. Hoping your hold comes in quickly. 9mo
Roary47 I‘m glad we have a little break here. My baby is going to arrive soon, so hopefully perfect timing. 😅 Then I can read him the second on the outside. 🤣 9mo
BethM @Roary47 congrats!!! 9mo
mabell 🐶🐱❤️ So cozy! 9mo
Daisey @Roary47 Sounds like the perfect plan! 9mo
Daisey @mabell It was! I had a bit of an annoying day, so it was the perfect calming thing for me. 9mo
JazzFeathers True, eh? But there's a greater separation between The Fellowship and the rest of the book then between The Two Towers and the rest of the book, in my opinion. 9mo

4✨ How do you sum up a book that had so much happen? We have hobbits that set out on a journey, met an unexpected leader, lost a good friend and guide, as well as run into a lot of other characters… as well as bad guys. All this because an evil force is after a powerful object. On to the second book to continue the journey. #FellowshipofTolkien #LotRChapteraDay @Daisey @JazzFeathers #catsoflitsy

Daisey When I read the final chapter now it reminds me this is just part 1 of a longer work. It‘s hard to sum up as it‘s really no conclusion, just the beginning of a new phase in the journey. 9mo
dabbe Hello there, sweet kitty! 🖤🐾🖤 9mo
JazzFeathers I agree with @Daisey The more l read Tolkien's work, the less l'm able to 'jydge' it because it slowly becomes something l love too much and l feel relevant to me. There's no sense in judging anymore. 9mo

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

All caught up with #readingwesteros #gotchapteraday, #lmpbc, and #cbbc #coffeebeanbookclub - now on to catching up with #fellowshipoftolkien #lotrchapteraday- that Elrond chapter is soooo long and threw me off my game! I‘ll read and participate in all the posts as soon as I‘m caught up- which may be a minute yet lol.

JazzFeathers 😂 l know it's probably nerdy, but l love The Council of Elrond. 9mo

I love the Council of Elrond. Every. Single. Time.
I know that many find it long and difficult, but to me, it's like a bonus in the story. It's a chapter in the book that contains many different stories, all connected. I mean: you're reading this book and you get to enjoy all these other stories.

It's fantastic!
