Cujo (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Cujo (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Stephen King
Stephen King puts nerve-tearing teeth into the terror of man's best friend turning into the ultimate beast. With this warning, prepare to meet Cujo, a friendly, playful 200-pound Saint Bernard who chases a rabbit into an underground cavern. When he emerges from the darkness, he is something else. Something that the men, women, and children of Castle rock, Maine, do not suspect. Until is too late. Until the fever of fear rises and spreads. Until no one is safe, and no one can escape the insatiable slavering evil padding on four paws from victim to victim.

Bookwormjillk One of my earliest memories is asking my Dad what he was reading and him teaching me what rabies was....

I thought this was okay, but it dragged a bit. I'm pretty sure I've read it before, but didn't remember much.

BookwormAHN I remember reading this in 4th grade and the first few pages terrified me but I also remember me and my mother getting in an argument on how to spell damn and me showing it to her in the book 😸 2w
BookwormAHN I also agree that this is the most realistic of his terrors and all dogs should be vaccinated for rabies. 2w
BookwormAHN Also the monster/man in the closet is the same as the serial killer in The Dead Zone. 2w
BarkingMadRead @BookwormAHN yesssss I love a good Easter egg! 2w
5feet.of.fury @BookwormAHN lol for the vocal lesson 😂 and I agree, Cujo didn‘t want to be a bad dog. The whole thing is so upsetting. 2w
KathyWheeler I ended up feeling bad for Cujo as well as for the people in this novel. It does drag a little bit though. 2w
AllDebooks This one hit me hardest. I thought the pace was goid and added to the tension. My heart broke for Cujo. I was incensed at Tad's parents for not being more supportive. Both of them had the heebie jeebies around the cupboard and noticed the awful smell. There is no rational explanation, but I would not be putting my child in that room. 2w

Lower end of the pick scale for me. Like many of King‘s books, it could have been a little shorter. I liked the way King handled a parent‘s love for their child. There is only a vague whisper of the supernatural in the story; the horror here is nature and illness. I saw a goat in someone‘s front yard on my walk. #audiowalk #LosersClub

Listening to Cujo for #LosersClub. I read it when it first came out, but don‘t remember all the details, so this should be interesting. King has said he doesn‘t remember writing the book; he was so high. I don‘t recall noticing anything weird, narratively, at the time. #audiowalk

Everyone knows the name Cujo, but have all of us really gotten to know this poor canine? Stephen King has a way of telling stories unlike anyone else. Cujo isn‘t the only scary thing in this story; humans are far worse. Curiosity and a wanting for second breakfast literally lead Cujo straight down the rabbit hole, where bad things are. What happens next is horrifying but it‘s not his fault. Highlight to remember: please vaccinate your pets!💉

Shortly following those mortal events in the Camber dooryard, Cujo‘s remains were cremated. The ashes went out with the trash and were disposed of at the Augusta waste-treatment plant. It would perhaps not be amiss to point out that he had always tried to be a good dog. He had tried to do all the things his MAN and his WOMAN, and most of all his BOY, had asked or expected of him. He would have died for them, if that had been required. ⬇️

JenniferEgnor He had never wanted to kill anybody. He had been struck by something, possibly destiny, or fate, or only a degenerative nerve disease called rabies. Free will was not a factor. The small cave into which Cujo had chased the rabbit was never discovered. Eventually, for whatever vague reasons small creatures may have, the bats moved on. The rabbit was unable to get out and it starved to death in slow, soundless misery. Its bones, so far as I⬇️ 1mo

(You have to love when a book starts out like this): “Once upon a time, not so long ago, a monster came to the small town of Castle Rock, Maine. He killed a waitress named Alma Frechette in 1970; a woman named Pauline Toothaker and a junior high school student named Cheryl Moody in 1971; a pretty girl named Carol Dunbarger in 1974; a teacher named Etta Ringgold in the fall of 1975; finally, a grade-schooler named Mary Kate Hendrasen in the⬇️

JenniferEgnor early winter of that same year. He was not werewolf, vampire, ghoul, or unnameable creature from the enchanted forest or from the snowy wastes; he was only a cop named Frank Dodd with mental and sexual problems.” (edited) 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Cujo was the best boy until he wasn‘t, but unlike the human monsters in this book, he couldn‘t help it. King is very good at making insane things seem real. This story feels like it could‘ve happened. In his memoir On Writing, King states that he was regretfully so deep in his alcoholism, he doesn‘t really remember writing this book. #coverlove

Third time I‘ve tried to finish this book. I will finish because there‘s a sequel to it in King‘s next book. “What happens to Cujo, how he becomes a horrifying vortex inescapably drawing in all the people around him, makes for one of the most heart-stopping novels Stephen King has ever written. “A genuine page-turner that grabs you and holds you and won‘t let go” (Chattanooga Times), Cujo will forever change how you view man‘s best friend.”

ElizaMarie I have recently revisited this novel (this time via audio) and I forgot how scary it was! I am glad you were able to finish it. I am curious about the sequel too. 2y

Cujo is one of the many King books I haven‘t revisited since high school. It still holds up today (and, in some ways, is more devastating to read as an adult). That said, I‘d forgotten how little of the book is dedicated to Cujo‘s rampage. Lots of deep, extensive character depth here, which really defined early King.

I didn‘t expect to love this one so much but WOW. Stephen King is so freaking good at building characters and details in the beginning and then layering them until the end just blows my mind. These characters are so real and believable. The story was heartbreaking in several ways, but the suspense I felt throughout and my heart rate in the second half made for a really fun reading experience.

Next up #readingStephenKing: The Running Man!

JanuarieTimewalker13 I love King but I‘ve never read this one! I‘m currently 1/2 way through Revival and am deeply engaged. He spins the best yarns! Always gets me out of a slump. Fantastic storyteller!! 3y

This is a struggle for me because of the chapters when Cujo is getting sicker. His POV is exceptional so much that it absolutely rips my heart out. I‘m not sure I‘m supposed to sympathize with Cujo, but here we are. I am a Dog Person.

Stephen King‘s layered build-up of each character is flawless though. He is the Master, no doubt about it.

I hope I can finish this one, but it will all come down to the dog. #readingStephenKing #currentlyreading

This is a difficult book to read, especially if you are a parent. I've always looked at Cujo as Stephen King's way of working through some of his worst fears as a parent (much like The Shining), and it's difficult to see him create such a wonderful, vulnerable character as Tad, then put that character in mortal danger. That said, Vic and Donna are written in likable and realistic fashion, and King manages to maintain tension throughout. 4/5.

This is the story of Cujo, a big cuddly dog who turns in a total monster. This all felt very real to me and the atmosphere and tension in this book leaps of the pages. I was in this very realistic, horrific situation where I could feel the heat and the sweat running down my own back.

I enjoyed how King gave Cujo his own dialogue, I actually felt so sorry for this dog. The internal battle in his own mind really added depth to his character.
