Seven Sisters: Book One
Seven Sisters: Book One | Lucinda Riley
109 posts | 102 read | 6 reading | 99 to read
The first book in a series from #1 internationally bestselling author Lucinda Riley, author of The Midnight Rose--hailed as "an extraordinary story [and] a complex, deeply engaging tale filled with fascinating characters" (Library Journal). Maia D'Apliese and her five sisters gather together at their childhood home, "Atlantis"--a fabulous, secluded castle situated on the shores of Lake Geneva--having been told that their beloved father, who adopted them all as babies, has died. Each sister is handed a tantalizing clue to her true heritage--a clue that takes Maia across the world to a crumbling mansion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Once there, she begins to put together the pieces of her story. Eighty years earlier in the Rio of the 1920s, Izabela Bonifacio's father has aspirations for his daughter to marry into the aristocracy. Meanwhile, architect Heitor da Silva Costa is devising plans for an enormous statue, to be called Christ the Redeemer, and will soon travel to Paris to find the right sculptor to complete his vision. Izabela--passionate and longing to see the world--convinces her father to allow her to accompany him and his family to Europe before she is married. There, at Paul Landowski's studio and in the heady, vibrant cafes of Montparnasse, she meets ambitious young sculptor Laurent Brouilly, and knows at once that her life will never be the same again. In this sweeping, epic tale of love and loss--the first in a unique, spellbinding series--Lucinda Riley showcases her storytelling talents like never before.

While not a #roadtrip in perhaps the traditional sense, each sister in this series takes a journey to discover her heritage (and herself). I've only read the first one but enjoyed it very much.

Darn it, now I have to read the rest of these. Sisters adopted by PaSalt, named after the mythological Seven Sisters of the Pleiades. Historical, mythology, family, secrets. In this one you go to Brazil and the history of Christ the Redeemer is fascinating. Good read.

I was really surprised at how much I loved this book. Especially considering that it's a genre I usually avoid, and not something I would have ever brought for myself. But my mother-in-law (not a reader) heard everyone talking about the books and decided to get me the first 3 for my birthday.

Let's just say I am very grateful to her at this moment. This is such a touching, raw story. Told in such a compelling way.

Whew. This was a chunkster, and though it was a relatively easy read, I found the first section of Bel‘s life dragged. And it was sad and dispiriting to think of how little has changed for women in so much of the world. But I loved the historical aspect of the book, and the middle sections picked up. I guess I‘m hooked; I have The Storm Sister on hold! #OutstandingOctober

I thoroughly enjoyed this dual timeframe story and was completely immersed in the characters‘ lives. I found both timelines equally as engrossing but I did love the history behind the building of the famous monument, Christ the Redeemer. Historical fact and fiction are blended beautifully. The descriptions of Geneva and Rio are very vivid, it made me want to visit both places. A wonderfully engaging and absorbing read. Double thumbs up from me!

I loved this book!
My last of January and third and final book of #Brazil for #FoodAndLit

Told in two time lines, the seven sisters tells the story of Maia, who is looking for her biological family after her adoptive father dies, leaving her and her five sisters with clues to their pasts. The clues lead her to Rio and to Isabella‘s story.

Beautiful writing and an intriguing premise. I will probably read the next for Norway in May 🤣

Ordered some Brazilian food for #FoodAndLit and tried a bit of everything!

There are Coxinhas (chicken croquettes), Pao de Queijo (cheese bread), Brazilian smoked sausage, Feijoada, BBQ chicken with Portuguese piri piri sauce, and chicken hearts.

We preferred the Feijoada we made at home. This one had beef whereas ours was just pork and tasted meatier 🤣 And I was the only one brave enough to try the hearts!

Clwojick ♥️♥️ 4y
Butterfinger How were the chicken hearts? 4y
Bookworm54 @Butterfinger they were quite nice. I read somewhere that described them as tasting like the dark meat of a chicken. I thought they were a bit meatier than that. And they weren‘t too chewy, texture kind of like a smoked sausage... But I only had 3 as I couldn‘t get over the fact they were hearts! Haha 4y

I love a good historical fiction that teaches as well as entertains. As the Christ the Redeemer is being built, a romance brews between the sculptor's assistant and the local rich girl. The romance was okay, but I was fascinated by the history of the gigantic Savior who looks over the impoverished favelas and the Copacabana crowd. #FoodandLit (1/5) @Texreader #PopSugar21 -like to visit in 2021 $4.57 @dariazeoli #SeriesRead - Book 1 @TheSpineView
