Lark Rise to Candleford - Trilogy
Lark Rise to Candleford - Trilogy: Lark Rise, Over to Candleford and Candleford Green | Flora Thompson
58 posts | 10 read | 2 reading | 4 to read
Flora Thompson's immortal trilogy, containing "Lark Rise", "Over to Candleford" and "Candleford Green", is a heartwarming portrayal of country life at the close of the 19th century. This story of three closely related Oxfordshire communities-a hamlet, the nearby village and a small market town-is based on the author's experiences during childhood and youth. It chronicles May Day celebrations and forgotten children's games, the daily lives of farmworkers and craftsmen, friends and relations-all painted with a gaiety and freshness of observation that make this trilogy an evocative and sensitive memorial to Victorian rural England.

Cuilin That ending was a bit underwhelming. I would also give it a soft pick as a novel, but the amateur historian in me #FullSend I‘m definitely gonna check out the TV series. 2w

Ruthiella I really liked this book a lot! I didn‘t mind that it was slow and plotless. 😆😍 2w
Bookwormjillk I think this would probably be a better TV show. Was afraid to watch before I finished so I wouldn‘t spoil the ending…but there was no ending? Anyway I would read the phone book with you all so I still enjoyed it for all my complaining. 2w
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk @cuilin The TV show is great. I‘m still working on the book. Like @Ruthiella I don‘t mind the lack of plot, but I‘m marveling at how they made a series out of this. (edited) 2w
Bookwormjillk Also Miss Lane gives Misery vibes and I would have liked to hear more about that. #ImYourBiggestFan 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk omg she 💯 does! 🤣🤣🤣 2w
willaful Also a soft pick for me.

I was just reading some of Flora's history... not only did her favorite brother die in WWI but her son died in WWII. 😭 It was a hard time to be alive.
2w
Deblovestoread Glad to have read it chp a day. I don't think i would have finished otherwise. I would have liked an epilog with how the rest of Laura's life went. I loved the show and am looking forward to a re-watch starting tonight. 2w
KAO I really did enjoy this—though I would not likely have made it through without the daily accountability and all of your comments! Thank you! I just started watching episode 1 of season 1 of the 2008 series from PBS—and I can completely understand your frustration if you had seen the series before reading the book! So much drama in episode 1 already! Whoever wrote the script had modern audiences in mind, I‘m sure. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I did like this but I do wish some of it had been a bit more focused on Laura, as those were my favorite parts. But it was all very interesting - although I'm not sure I would have finished if it wasn't for this group!!! 2w
dabbe We got the most detailed explanations for pretty much every single thing in Lark Rise and Candleford--plus extreme details for every little thing Laura did, every flower she saw, every game she played, ... yet we don't know why she just up and leaves? #wth? The ending made me go 🤯!!! 2w
Bklover I actually enjoyed this somewhat, and I‘m glad we read it. Particularly enjoyed reading it with the #hashtagbrigade ! However I will admit that the idea of watching the show now is painful! 😂 2w

Thank you @BarkingMadRead for leading the #Hashtagbrigade in this group read. Unlike some of the group‘s co-readers, I very much enjoyed this gentle, disjointed and plotless look at rural life in late 19th century England, which was based on the author‘s own experience. For me, the slow pace of the book really suited the chapter a day approach. 😃

This is also my first completed book for

This book was more a collection of vignettes than a story, and I think it‘s probably better suited to reading all at once than a chapter a day. I could see myself reading it by the lake on a summer day not really caring about the lack of story line, just enjoying the strong sense of time. But to discuss as a group as if any of it fit together? Nah. #ItsNotYouItsMe #ButMaybeItsYou #HashtagBrigade

Thank you @BarkingMadRead Truly heroic this one.

Cuilin I feel a little guilty knowing Mrs Macey‘s business. 🤫 as to Mr Phillip #ILoveTheSoundOfMyOwnVoice White, good for Laura saying thanks but no!!! 2w
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin ahhhhhhh I totally left that out! That was so sad, and I liked it better thinking he was off traveling 2w
willaful I was half-expecting you to use the “why are men?“ meme for this chapter. 😂 Thank goodness Laura didn't let herself get caught up in that! I wonder why she didn't stay at the post office though.... will we actually find out, or will it just end with her tombstone? 😂 2w
KAO I was stunned that we actually got the mystery regarding Mrs. Macey‘s absent husband solved—but what a sad turn of events there! (edited) 2w
KAO I‘m so relieved that Laura didn‘t settle for Philip White. No, thank you, but your egotism has been amusing anyway, Sir. 2w

This novel offers a nostalgic portrayal of rural English life in the late 19th century. Thompson's descriptions of the natural landscape, seasonal changes, and daily routines are immersive, transporting readers to the hamlets of Lark Rise and the more affluent Candleford. HOWEVER, the narrative is too descriptive at times and lacks a strong, driving plot, making the reading overly cumbersome at times.

Bookwormjillk Did you finish???

Oh wait is today the last day? I just realized I never finished today's chapter. That's the kind of book this is 😂

TheAromaofBooks It was kind of interesting to hear about the Oscar Wilde trial from someone of the same era, but completely disconnected from it, kind of like we are with any Hollywood drama that comes up. 2w

TheAromaofBooks The story about the guy just wandering off for a YEAR?! I need MORE DETAILS on where he was and on poor Mrs. Macey's sketchy missing husband 😂 2w
willaful Maybe I was spoiled by book 2 but I'm having so much trouble getting interested in this one! Just dying for it to be over already, 2w
KAO @TheAromaofBooks Agreed! Where in the world was this man for an entire YEAR?! And the mystery of Mrs. Macey‘s husband off with “his gentleman” is very suspicious. I‘m betting we never find out more about these, but I hope I‘m wrong! 2w
willaful @KAO Any other author, we definitely would. For this one, odds are against us! 2w

Yet it was thrilling to see a man hurtling through space on one high wheel, with another tiny wheel wobbling helplessly behind. You wondered how they managed to keep their balance. No wonder they wore an anxious air. ‘Bicyclist‘s face‘, the expression was called, and the newspapers foretold a hunchbacked and tortured-faced future generation as a result of the pastime.

dabbe @mcctrish Bam! That's the word for this book. It's an ACCOUNTING of every single aspect of daily life. I'm close to saying #uhCOUNTmeout! 😂 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk what really funny is I did my reading at school today during silent reading time. I have this and my Sunday Buddy Read on my kindle and I decided I‘d knock my chapter off using the kindle app on my phone. But it was queued up to Grand Hotel and I was so perplexed as to where the German dancer came from and who was he backing into a corner 1mo
mcctrish @dabbe I mean, it certainly is a glimpse into a day in the life but my god it‘s dry as toast 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - It's true!! I honestly can't decide whether or not I like this book!? But I love the more personal glimpses we get with Laura's opinions/thoughts/actions vs. the overview. 1mo
KAO I found it remarkable that there was a lot to say about the role of church (including the rector‘s practices outside of services) in this hamlet. Nowhere near this amount of detail was given about school! Then again, the actual church building was often located at the center of a village (or is that true only in Germany, Austria, and other European countries where I‘ve seen it so often?). I can imagine how the church was figuratively central too. 1mo
KAO I do agree that my interest is sparked when I get a glimpse of Laura or Edmund‘s behaviors! Or of particular background stories on occasionally introduced characters. Poor Rev. Marley! 1mo

willaful Interesting commentary on the class issues for the teachers. Kind of an extension of that for governesses I guess. I chortled at “3 ladies, 3 women, and a teacher.“ 1mo
dabbe @Cuilin That would happen when Matt and I would be escorts at middle school dances. dabbe I cracked up when Miss Higgs told the class she wanted to be their friend, and the students “scented weakness ... from one whose office it was to rule.“ There's a reason why teachers don't smile until 2nd semester. 😂

My first year teaching I had an 8th grade class from hell. I literally begged them to be good and promised them an ice cream party EVERY Friday if they were. Did it work? Nope. Major lesson learned. By me. 😂
1mo
KAO As a retired teacher myself, I was looking forward to this chapter! I am fascinated by accounts of school life from the past! I had a distant relative who was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse in Canada many decades ago—and man oh man, but she had stories to tell! (edited) 1mo
Bookwormjillk I was kind of happy Laura wasn‘t top in her class. Nothing wrong with smart girls of course but it seems like every girl in every book ends up number one in her class. Kind of relatable to read about one who was good at some things and not at others. 1mo

Bookwormjillk @Cuilin I actually don‘t mind it but I think it would be better read in chunks or all at once. To me chapter a day is kind of weird for a book like this. 2mo
dabbe I did love reading the songs today. They were like ballads--or maybe they were actually ballads. 😂 2mo
mcctrish It‘s just a lot of words setting the scene for an episode of All Creatures Great and Small imo and I‘d like it to start already 2mo
willaful @dabbe It's definitely ballads! I'm interested in folk music, so I enjoyed this chapter. I recognized a few of these because they made it to Appalachia and Jean Ritchie sang them. 2mo
Bookwormjillk I was trying to figure out the tunes for each one but in my mind they all sounded like Chumbawumba. 2mo
dabbe @willaful 🤩🤗🤩 2mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk 🤩😂🤗 2mo
Bklover @Cuilin The way this is written reminds me of the early Little House books minus any drama. The difference being the target audience. 2mo
willaful @Bookwormjillk Here's a bit of Jean Ritchie singing Lord Lovell: https://folkways.si.edu/jean-ritchie/lord-lovel/american-folk-old-time-world/mus...

And here's a version of “False Sir John“: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAT5mDCwKpE

KAO I enjoyed some of the songs that I found on YouTube—especially “The Outlandish Knight”! https://youtu.be/bq6RldgW7NQ?si=bX_O2D6mjk1HasWB (edited) 2mo
KAO @Cuilin I‘m with you! I‘m enjoying the book so far (though I‘m not usually so patient with long descriptions), and the word “pastoral” seems perfect. Maybe it‘s just what my anxious mind needs right now! 2mo
Cuilin @KAO exactly, it‘s so relaxing. 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin I love your perspective! I think I need to change the lens through which I have been viewing this book. 1mo

i have the cutest tiny edition of this from the library (shown on a regular sized hardcover for scale.) But the print is too small for my aging eyes, so I have to use my ereader!

#HashtagBrigade

Bookwormjillk That‘s what I would have to do too 2mo
Ruthiella I can only imagine how small the print must be! I have a paperback copy from the library with normal sized print and it is a BRICK! 2mo
TheBookHippie Mine is still enroute 😅😵‍💫😬 I‘d need a magnifying glass 🫠 2mo

AllDebooks 🧐 I can barely see the book, never mind the print. 2mo
Librarybelle Cute edition, but I can only imagine the size of the print! 2mo
julieclair Thankfully, I‘m reading it on my tablet, so 1) I can‘t see how thick the book is and 2) I can adjust the size of the print to suit my old eyes! 😂 2mo
BarkingMadRead That‘s a cool cover!! 2mo
mcctrish Such a pretty cover but micro print is ridiculous. I‘m on my e reader too and I think I‘d like to know how far I have to read of this meandering bucolic story 2mo
Deblovestoread I‘m on an e reader, too. Although I can still read fairly small print it causes headaches so I steer clear. 2mo
Bookwomble It looks like Macmillan Collector's edition judging by the cover layout. I love those books, but as you say, the font can be challenging at times! 🔎📖 2mo
quietjenn So pretty, but I sympathize about the font. I'm reading the ebook, too. 2mo
willaful @Bookwomble Yes, that's it. I remember the first edition of “The Professor“ I ever read was a tiny one like this -- but I was maybe 16 then! 2mo
