I have been writing morning pages daily for nearly three months, and it has been quite a revelation! The thing about writing them is, it is a bit of a struggle, but truth be told, everything in the book is coming true. The fact that writing morning pages helps one unblock ones creativity, even though it seems like reverse psychology. The thing is writing three whole pages of text/prose works its magic on you. It also has some elements of CBT.

BkClubCare Lovely! 2mo

This is a pic somebody's personal thoughts about her experience of the book entitled 'The Artist's Way'. This is an awesome book and the concept of morning pages is truly something else. It truly takes alot of effort to write three whole pages of text every day, but the journey even though a little difficult is worth it because it leads to some rather astonishing revelations about our subconcious thought processes and find clarity in life

You do not need to work to become spiritual. You are spiritual; you need only to remember that fact. Spirit is within you. God is within you. -Julia Cameron

The Artist's Way | Julia Cameron

Julia Cameron's philosophy has helped me understand that the ability to be artistic comes more naturally than one would think. Cameron believes that the “refusal to be creative is self-will and counter to our true nature.“ In other words, we all possess an inner creativity; we just willingly choose to block ourselves from that impulse. Her course is meant to help us unlock the artist that lives within each and every one of us.

“The book called 'The Artist's Way' helped me face my fears around trying new things and gave me a better framework to live with the vulnerability and uncertainty that comes with life.“

The Artist's Way | Julia Cameron

Many of us wish we were more creative. Many of us sense we are more creative but unable to tap effectively into that creativity. Our dreams elude us. Our lives seem somehow flat. Often, we have great ideas, and wonderful dreams, but we are unable to actualize them for ourselves. Sometimes we have specific longings we would love to be able to fulfil by learning to play the piano, painting, acting, or writing.

I am reading this incredible book. It sure has some interesting truths in it, such as how writing 3 whole pages of handwritten content can boost your creativity. It also tells you other nice things such as the importance of nurturing that creativity. One way of doing so is by going on Artist's Dates. There are also other things in first chapter worth noting, which somewhat interested me, and surprised me as well.

Follow-up to my last post:

"Reading deprivation casts us into our inner silence, a space some of us begin to immediately fill with new words---long, gossipy conversations, television bingeing, the radio as a constant, chatty companion. We often cannot hear our own inner voice...above the static...If we monitor the inflow and keep it to a minimum...[o]ur reward will be a new outflow. Our own art...will begin to nudge aside the sludge..."

ImperfectCJ Still not convinced that this means I have to set aside Lone Women until this coming Sunday. Especially since today is my day off work. 11mo
IndoorDame I do vaguely recall that part. I think I assumed she meant talk radio, and mostly listened to music during that time. But it‘s definitely a daunting prospect! You should do whatever feels right. 11mo
Suet624 I can feel sometimes that I am avoiding silence by reading. When that happens I put the book aside to think through what it is I'm avoiding. Other times you can't tear me away from reading. It's all in the quality of need as far as I'm concerned. I also spend time in the morning doing a tiny bit of journaling so I'm not totally blocking out my inner voice. Read on, my friend, with intention. :) 11mo

AmandaBlaze I admit that after Winter Games I took a day off mostly. I couldn't imagine a week. 11mo
BarbaraBB I see what she means but not how it would help me in any way to not read. I think reading gives me focus and stability 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
ImperfectCJ @Suet624 I was actually thinking along similar lines. I know that sometimes I put an audiobook in my ears to drown out my own thoughts, and that perhaps if my intention this week is to read mindfully and with awareness of my reasons, that would meet the spirit of the activity. So far today I've mostly been listening to Low through my headphones, which has been lovely and sometimes cathartic but also doesn't leave much space for my own thoughts. 11mo
Suet624 @ImperfectCJ 💕💕💕 I haven‘t listened to Low in ages. Thanks for the reminder. 11mo
Faranae I think this a case where an author or creator takes something that worked for them personally and acts like it's a universal experience. I suppose if you've never done it before, it can be worth a shot, and I certainly think cutting back stuff that's intentionally addictive like social media might be helpful, but... some of us read *to* think more deeply, not to avoid it. 11mo
ImperfectCJ @Faranae You make a good point. I definitely find myself reading with an eye for metaphor and how to tell a parallel real-life story/situation/experience through symbolism, how that brings forth a truth that is difficult to impart just by recounting facts and emotional description, and I find that this really expands my thinking. I also see Cameron's point in that a pause gives those ideas space to develop, or they're just passing notions 11mo
ImperfectCJ @Suet624 I only recently discovered them (although I'm sure I've heard their music) via the podcast 60 Songs that Explain the 90s, and I am a little obsessed right now. Their last album is heartbreaking. I guess it's good timing for a reading break. :-) 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly This book is so widely recommended, but I dropped it after this week and get annoyed by the mention of it now. That was one of the most anxious weeks of my life (the most anxious I‘d ever been until my son was a newborn, and now my cancer diagnosis). Never doing that again. 11mo
Larkken Haha, I see what she means I think, but doubt that being bored would make me into something I am not: an artist or brilliant (thinking of the similar tagged book...). Reading is an escape, yes, but also makes me engage with the world in new ways. 11mo
ImperfectCJ @Clare-Dragonfly Wow, you had a very strong reaction to this exercise! I do find some of her suggestions strident and maybe somewhat off-base, but my reaction to it isn't as strong as yours (at least to this one...I have others that get my heart rate up in a bad way when people mention them). 11mo
ImperfectCJ @Larkken I think that part of the thing is that she was writing this in the late 80s/early 90s, and there really wasn't much besides books, TV, and radio to capture our attention. And TV was so different...no 24-hour news cycle, even. I feel like she could have rewritten this exercise to be more about mindfully engaging with potential distractions rather than cutting out reading specifically. It would have made it easier to personalize, at least. 11mo

I forgot that Week 4 of The Artist's Way includes a week-long "reading deprivation." I didn't plan ahead, or I would have been working on books I don't mind putting off for a week instead of two I REALLY want to keep reading.

I've managed to avoid reading (print and audio) for nearly 5 hours. Surely this counts as enough deprivation?

catiewithac 😱 11mo
IndoorDame Does she say why? It‘s been years since I did it, but most creatives don‘t read as much as Littens, or for the same reasons... If she‘s just trying for a week long distraction deprivation, maybe a week sans television and/or social media would work? 11mo
Crazeedi I read this many years ago, forgot about this 11mo

My first Artist Date since starting the tagged book again. It's been more than a year since I stopped taking voice lessons, and this morning before work I gave myself the time to spend just singing. It was cathartic and, I like to believe, occasionally melodious. My home-from-college kid woke up to my singing and said it was a great way to wake up, so there's that.

SamAnne Love this. Have you read Your Brain on Art? Just picked it up from the library. 📚 looks like it could be an interesting read. 11mo
CatLass007 I haven‘t sung in a while. I auditioned for Civic Chorale a couple of years ago and was asked to sing second soprano instead of first. Losing some of my range probably can be attributed to not singing and getting older. I enjoyed being part of a group again but I kept missing rehearsals because of migraines. It seemed to me that I was just putting myself through the frustration of falling behind and it wasn‘t necessary. That‘s happened (cont)⬇️ 11mo
CatLass007 with other things too. Until my neurologist and I figure out what‘s going to prevent migraines, I‘m not going to torture myself by making plans. 11mo

CatLass007 @SamAnne Is the book something that would be better seen? Because saving my vision is one of the reasons I listen to audiobooks, and this is available in audio format. 11mo
CatLass007 Also, @ImperfectCJ, cute kitty. I guess I should ask you the same question: is The Artist‘s Way a book that is better seen than heard? 11mo
BennettBookworm LOVED the artist‘s way! 11mo
ImperfectCJ @SamAnne That book looks interesting! I'll have to check it out! 11mo
ImperfectCJ @CatLass007 Hmm...I haven't really thought about it, but I don't think it has to be seen. Mostly it's just essays/explanations of the weeks and the activities that you do on your own. I think it would depend on the individual and how they process information audibly, but I can't think of anything you'd miss if you experienced it only on audio. 11mo
CatLass007 Thank you. That‘s very helpful. 11mo

Lately I've been feeling a little mid-life-crisis-y and decided I wanted to do The Artist's Way all the way through again, something I haven't done for 20+ years. Try as I might---I even had my family search---I could not find the copy I've had since 1996, so I ordered a new one. When it arrived today, I unpacked it, turned to the bookshelf to put it away, and put my hand immediately on my 1996 copy. So. The system works.

Texreader Dang! That‘s crazy! But also, this looks fascinating! Share more info? 12mo
ImperfectCJ @Texreader Absolutely! It's a 12-week series of activities designed to help you recover your creative self. The two main elements are daily Morning Pages and weekly Artist Dates. I'll tag you in a couple of posts showing the ToC. There's an element of New Agey spirituality in it that rubs some the wrong way, but I find the exercises to be valuable enough that I am comfortable translating the New Age language into something less cringey to me. 12mo
Texreader I‘m so going to check this out! Fascinating!! Thank you for the posts. 12mo

Why do i get my best ideas in the shower? An exasperated Einstein is said to have remarked. Research shows that this is because showering is an artist-type activity.

Showering, Swimming, Scrubbing, Shaving, Steering a Car. So many S-like yes words! All of these are regular but repetitive ideas that may tip us over from a state of logicalness into our creativity.

AkashaVampie Being in a bathroom, u get really good idea. My grandfather used to call it his office. Haha 13mo

You must not take anyone on this artist's date but you and your inner artist, a.k.a your creative child. In its most creative form, the artist's date is an excursion, a play date that you pre-plan and defend....

quote
SarahDWriter

...is our creative holistic sense which usually works its way out in patterns and shadings. it sees a Fall Forest and thinks 'Wow! Leaf Bouquet! Pretty! ...

.....An artist's mind is both creative and free-wheeling, it is akin to making new connections, yoking together new images to evoke meaning. Like the Norse myths calling a boat: A wave horse. In Star Wars, the name Skywalker is a lovely artist brain-type flash.

quote
SarahDWriter

There is no wrong way to do morning pages, as these morning meanderings are not meant to be art. Or even writing. I stress that point to reassure the non-writers working with this book. Writing is simply one of the tools. Pages are meant to be simply, the art of moving the hand across the page and writing down whatever comes to mind. Nothing is too petty, too silly, too stupid, or too weird to be included.

blurb
SarahDWriter

In movie terms we simply pull focus, lifting up and away from being embedded in our lives, until we attain an overview. This overview enables us to make valid creative choices. Think of it as a journey with difficult, varied, and fascinating terrain. You are moving to higher ground. The fruit of your withdrawal is what you need to understand as a positive process, which is both painstaking but exhilarating.

3/5⭐ The aggressively Christian framework being passed off as general spirituality bothers the shit out of me. The author clearly comes from a privileged perspective that's often out of touch with reality. She relies on the problematic law of attraction and other woo-woo (e.g. just plan to travel the globe sincerely enough and the money to do so will appear for you!). However, her tools and reflective tasks are incredibly effective. #bookspinbingo

slategreyskies It‘s been years since I read this, and I don‘t remember the Christian aspect of it. That‘s a bummer, because I was looking forward to rereading it. Thanks for the review! 2y

tokorowilliamwallace Yay, let me know how The Artist's Way methodology works for you. It didn't work for me, though it should have, with its just-out-of-dreaming stream-of-consciousness mind dump. 3y
Allylu I have just finished book #6 for this month, but it‘s only the 25th, I have 6 more days to go. I want to set a goal of 10 books for February. I‘m doing great on my weight loss, and I am going to set a goal of walking on our treadmill or outside, if possible, at least 3 days per week in February. Heavy exercise is not encouraged under my plan but 30 minutes or less is okay. Let‘s go! 3y
Crazeedi @wanderinglynn I read the artists way many years ago, I just looked at it on my shelf yesterday ❤ 3y
OriginalCyn620 I‘ve been thinking of starting The Artist‘s Way too! Maybe sometime in the next couple of months I will do that! 3y
mcipher My Feb goals are my nervous system reset yoga daily practice, 3x week minimum 10 minute walks, 3x week veggie-based lunch, and to only read my shelves after I‘ve finished my current library books because we are moving and books are heavy. Jan has been an amazing reading month and I‘ve stuck to my lunch goal at least - it‘s been too cold and easy to put off walks! 3y
wanderinglynn @Allylu walking is an excellent exercise! And it is only the 25th (there, it‘s already the 26th here 😉) so you still have time to work on your Jan goals and think about your Feb goals. You‘re doing awesome! 🙌🏻💜 3y

TheAromaofBooks I also had a slow start in January, and did change my goals, but since then (the last two weeks) I have really been sticking with it and am so excited about my progress, even if it is in the form of teeny tiny baby steps haha 3y
wanderinglynn @TheAromaofBooks sometimes finding the right goal can make all the difference. And teeny tiny steps are usually better in the long run than gigantic steps. You got this! 🙌🏻 3y
Lynnsoprano Not quite what I wanted to do for January, but I‘ve been close, and I exceeded what I needed to meet my Apple Watch monthly challenge. For February, my goal is to pass my WW weekly steps goal every week, and read four books. 3y

CoverToCoverGirl I have a wine glass the with the same thing on it! I get it out and use it when my husband says or does something really annoying lol 🙄 which in turn annoys him - then we both end up laughing 5y
CocoReads @CoverToCoverGirl I love that! I‘ve been wanting the wine glass too 5y

Mehso-so

Apparently I‘m an oddball: This book is super popular, but I found it sloppy and often frustrating, an inconsistent mix of control-freaky negativity, fluffy handwaving and filler, and occasional deep insights. Some of the good ideas were very good, though, and some of the moments of clarity rang very true, so I have to give this a mixed rating. I‘m glad I read it, but am dubious about reading it again. 😆 Power to those who love it, though!

This is one of those books that I continue to come back to. It's been years since I first read it, and I still do morning pages religiously as suggested by Julia Cameron. This is a wonderful book for artists of any and every medium. She helps you take care of yourself and your craft, showing you that art and spirituality are intertwined.

I just finished the 12 week program set out in this book on creativity. I confess I have owned it for many years and, after a New York Times profile on Julia Cameron I picked it up and decided to go through the 12 weeks- I enjoyed it ( all but the reading deprivation week😱) and it taught me alot about creativity. Recommended for creatives or those who want to be.

SkeletonKey I was doing so well until that reading deprivation week and then I quit 😂 Darn. 6y
Booksnchill @SkeletonKey It was a bit terrible but I did get alot done around the house! 6y
batsy @SkeletonKey I had the same response when I read this, years ago 😆 I love the morning pages idea; only problem is I've stopped 🙈 6y
SkeletonKey @batsy - Me too! Should try to pick it up again. 6y

I wasn't sure if I was depressed or not, so I flipped a book over to seal the deal.

I turn into my father so fast when I see the difference in the US price and the Canadian one.

It took me 7 months to get through the 3 month program, but I didn't give up! Transformational experience not only on my creativity but also how I want to prioritize all of my passions in life. Can't recommend this program enough!
