I know myself, with #CampLitsy25 on its way and probably #CampToB25 (why hasn‘t it been announced yet?!) and the upcoming #Booker longlist I know I‘ll keep changing my reading plans. So to make it doable I chose the shortest books on my TBR shelves for #14Books14Weeks. Looking forward to reading all of these!

Bookwormjillk I loved Mina‘s Matchbox. So different from her others. 10h
sarahbarnes So many of these I want to read, too! Great stack and a great plan! 😊 10h

sarahbarnes Yes I‘m in! I need to finish my stack! 10h
Liz_M @BarbaraBB You read so many books, I'm sure you can manage these and the #CampLitsy books! 9h
squirrelbrain I keep thinking about joining in with this challenge….🤔 8h
Ruthiella @squirrelbrain Do it! 😂 Mix it up with a few sure things (#CampLitsy25) and some where you need the challenge to motivate you. 👍 8h
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain No brainer, @Ruthiella is right 😉 2h

Between #authoramonth and #bookclub selections and #camplitsy I filled out most of my list for #14books14weeks & just needed a couple more from my TBR.

TheBookHippie I gotta get my list together! 2d
BarbaraBB Great stack. #CampLitsy definitely helps! 2d
Liz_M It looks like you're going to have a fabulous reading summer! 1d

James: A Novel | Percival Everett
post image
Pickpick

Great timing for me to be reading the audiobook of James just as it won the Pullitzer!
I wanted to give a shout out to the narrator Dominic Hoffman. He really is fantastic. I listened to him narrate Homegoing years ago and that book is now burned in my brain. (Please listen to it if you havent read it yet!) He has a gorgeous voice and made the differences in James‘s use of two languages have such an impact on me. This book is thought provoking ⬇️

Centique Although you dont need to have read Huckleberry Finn, that is a book i studied at uni, so it felt particularly emotional for me to know that i studied this book without thinking too deeply about the character of Jim. 💔 2d
CBee @Centique I loved Homegoing so much, and read James last year for #camplitsy. I pretty much love everything I‘ve read from Everett (have you read The Trees?). Thanks for the heads up about the audio narration, makes me want to add those both to my audio library! *runs off to look* Oh! Transcendent Kingdom by Gyasi was also excellent 😊😊 2d

Suet624 @CBee that‘s always the question I ask, “have you read the trees?” 2d
Jas16 Agreed @Suet624 That is my first question too. 2d
CBee @Suet624 great minds! That was my first Everett. He never disappoints! 2d
Reggie At bookclub people brought up James and I said-have ya‘ll read The Trees? Or So Much Blue. Also Im sad because he and his wife are coming to the Santa Fe Book Festival this weekend and all the tickets are all sold out. 2d
Centique @Suet624 @CBee The Trees was my first Percival Everett too! Absolutely loved it! 2d
CarolynM Lovely review🥰 Putting Homegoing on my Audible Wishlist 🙂 2d
Centique @TheKidUpstairs OMG! I am so excited to hear that 🙌 Thank you so much for letting me know 😊 2d
Centique @Reggie oh man! That is disappointing! Never enough tickets for the really good ones. I am going to a writers festival thing this weekend - my friend chose which session, and it‘s one about a woman who left a cult. Should be interesting! 2d
Centique @CarolynM i hope you like it! The thing with Homegoing is you are jumping a generation with most chapters - from mother to child etc - so it ends up like connected short stories. There were one or two that didnt grab me but the rest were wonderful. 😍 2d

Still in Monrovia with the sociopath narrator of this tedious nonsense

bookandbedandtea "Tedious nonsense" ? 3d
CSeydel @bookandbedandtea I keep waiting for her to realize that her unhappiness is because she‘s pathologically self-absorbed, but she hasn‘t yet 3d
dabbe I bailed on this one during Camp Litsy last year for reasons you just described so well. 🤣 3d
See All 33 Comments
CSeydel @dabbe I‘m so tempted to bail but my book club is discussing it Thursday night and I want to be able to defend my low opinion of it. And … maybe? .:. it gets better? My husband wisely bailed after 50 pages 3d
CBee @CSeydel I bailed during #camplitsy last year too. It was making me feel physically ill 😂 3d
5feet.of.fury 😂😂 3d
TheBookHippie I‘ve never hated a book as much as this one.. 😵‍💫 3d
fredthemoose @CSeydel it does not get better 3d
dabbe @CSeydel Life's too short! I bet you already have enough to defend your position. Sometimes a bail sends a powerful message, too! #hailthebail! 😍 3d
willaful yet another camp bail here! 3d
DGRachel Adding my vote for “save yourself and bail”. I am another Camp Litsy bail. 3d
BarbaraBB Lol, I loved it! 3d
CSeydel @TheBookHippie It‘s truly terrible. The MC seems to think she‘s the only person in the world who has ever had an original thought. The rest of humanity exists only as either her audience, support staff, or pawns in whatever emotional games she‘s playing with herself. 3d
CSeydel @CBee @5feet.of.fury @fredthemoose @dabbe @willaful @DGRachel Thank you all for your support! I was happy to have read far enough that she acknowledges that “there is something very wrong with me” and starts to take accountability for some of the bullshit she‘s making up in her head and attributing to everyone around her. That she‘s been ridiculously unfair about older women. But it‘s just so boring listening to her natter on. 3d
TheBookHippie @CSeydel It was such an insult to women as a whole, let alone the immense privilege it shows ad nauseam and insult to my intelligence. I think it‘s an extremely harmful book. It shows why I don‘t like most women that‘s for sure. Just YUK. (edited) 3d
CSeydel @BarbaraBB A lot of people do! When I‘m done I‘ll check out your review and look forward to seeing it from a different perspective 🤞🏻 3d
CSeydel @TheBookHippie I hope most women aren‘t as full of themselves as this one. Somehow she manages to be completely absorbed by her own inner fantasy world - “mind-rooted,” as she calls it - living entirely in her mind yet shockingly un-self-aware somehow. She views her entire life as a piece of performance art and everyone else is her supporting cast, and can‘t understand why they don‘t also see themselves that way 3d
FashionableObserver I tried so hard to get into this book. I really did. I think I made it a few chapters in before bailing. I usually hold onto my books with a death grip, but I swear I try to pawn that thing off on people all of the time. 🤣 3d
CSeydel @FashionableObserver I hear you. It‘s a slog for sure. 3d
5feet.of.fury @CSeydel is this the same book club that picked Lost Apothecary? 😅 3d
TheBookHippie @CSeydel I always have that hope. 3d
FashionableObserver @CSeydel I don‘t understand the rave reviews. It flew off of the shelves—I picked up the last copy my tiny bookstore had. All of the ladies in the store were raving about it, too… 3d
Ruthiella If it‘s worth anything, I am enjoying your complaints! 😂 So thank you for reading! 3d
RaeLovesToRead 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 3d
RaeLovesToRead I thought the book was brilliant, but I also agree with everything you say 🤣🤣🤣🤣 3d
CSeydel @5feet.of.fury haha - No! Can you believe it? Two book club meetings happen to fall in the same week and they both picked loser books 😩 3d
CSeydel @Ruthiella Thank you! That‘s one good thing! I had seen some bad reviews and I hoped even if it wasn‘t good, it would at least be “fun to hate.” But it‘s mostly tedious listening to someone go through all these emotional calisthenics to rid themselves of a stupid misconception that I don‘t share (that sexuality is everything, and women are worthless after menopause). Like: I just don‘t care, and I‘m not learning anything 💀 3d
CSeydel @RaeLovesToRead LOL!! 😂 3d
BarbaraBB I also love the controversy surrounding this book 😂 3d
CSeydel @BarbaraBB Absolutely! At least we have that 😆 3d
CarolynM You comments sum up my feelings exactly. She‘s appalling. 2d
CSeydel @CarolynM Glad I‘m not the only one 😬 2d

CatLass007 Thank you! A couple of these already are on my wish list so I‘ll just bump them up a bit. 4d
Kitta Ooh I‘m so excited! Not the ones I voted for but it‘ll be great to read some new authors. I love #CampLitsy! 4d
TheKidUpstairs Love the variety! Looking forward to another year of camp! 4d
squirrelbrain Hooray! 6 wonderful books to discuss! 4d
Ruthiella Great mix of books. Camp‘s gonna be fun! 🤩 4d
Deblovestoread Fantastic bunch of books! Yay for camp 🏕️ 4d
BarbaraBB @Kitta @TheKidUpstairs @CatLass007 I am glad you‘re happy within the results. It will be a great reading summer! 4d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Yes! Really happy with the results! Now I have to get those books and start reading! 4d
DGRachel What a mix! Two I‘m really looking forward to reading, three that are intriguing 🤔, and one that I want to run screaming from. 🤣🤣 (edited) 4d
peaKnit Ooh Tilt was on my TBR! 4d
BarbaraBB @Graciouswarriorprincess I did didn‘t I? If not something went wrong because you are definitely on the taglist 4d
BarbaraBB @DGRachel Now I am really curious which one that is! 4d
DGRachel @BarbaraBB LOL. I was thinking of Audition. Most of these are (as usual) out of my comfort zone. Tilt sounds like it will break me, but Audition looks like the one I am least likely to enjoy and will be the hardest to pick up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4d
BarbaraBB @DGRachel at least it‘s short! But you can of course skip it and arrive at camp when we start Wild Dark Shores which I already read and is so, so good! 4d
KarenUK Great list! Looking forward to it ❤️ 4d
Megabooks I think the campers have chosen great books this year and several genres, too, which is fantastic! Scifi, dystopian, thriller, lit fic! It‘s going to be a great summer!! (edited) 4d
BkClubCare The WHOLE slate! 🎉 4d
BkClubCare @DGRachel - and that is the fun? I personally am NOT looking forward to the SAC. It is so NOT my genre. 4d
DGRachel @BkClubCare It is the reason I come to Camp! It‘s a celebration of readers and our differences. Whether I enjoy the book or not, I enjoy the conversation about it. The SAC is the one I‘m looking forward to the most. 😂 4d
BkClubCare @DGRachel - I DNF‘d the one of his I tried 😔 It was just TOO MUCH. Is this one part of a series? (Hoping NO) 4d
CSeydel Thank you so much for hosting! 4d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Yes I love that it is sort of eclectic 😀 (edited) 4d
BarbaraBB @DGRachel @BkClubCare I too love that we have different tastes and some of these books might not be my first choices but I know the discussion will add so much to them! And SAC is not part of a series as far as I know! 4d
BarbaraBB @peaKnit @KarenUK @CSeydel We‘ll have some good times ahead of us I think, with reading these books and discussing them! 4d
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB - Thank you. You are a Litsy inspiration to me. Happy (American?!) Mother Day 4d
CSeydel @BkClubCare Yeah that‘s the way it goes with Camp Litsy, LOL! I wish we had a “semifinals” voting round so we could narrow down our choices, but in the end it‘s just for fun 🤷🏻‍♀️I might read Death of the Author and Tilt but the others, no thanks. (I do enjoy SA Cosby, his books are great thrillers but not really discussion material.) (edited) 4d
Chelsea.Poole Looking forward to discussing these with you all. Such a nice variety! 🏕️ Thanks to the hosts for the thoughtful questions and keeping the campers in line! 4d
BarbaraBB @BkClubCare Same ❤️❤️ 4d
CarolynM Some interesting titles there. I probably won‘t read all of them, but will look forward to seeing all the discussions 🙂 4d
BarbaraBB @CarolynM We‘re happy to have you at camp whenever you like! 4d
Meshell1313 Sounds like a perfect camp! 3d
Well-ReadNeck I‘m in! Please keep me on the tag list. Excited to discuss All. The. Books!! 3d
BarbaraBB @Meshell1313 We‘re happy to have you! 3d
BarbaraBB @Well-ReadNeck We will, no camp without you! 3d

Pickpick

Early in the COVID pandemic, Cora‘s sister is brutally killed in front of her in an anti-Asian hate crime. She then becomes a crime scene cleaner and starts getting visited by ghosts. I was initially put off by the title, but I‘m glad I got over that, as I found this really absorbing.

BarbaraBB Great review. This one has been on my radar since people nominated it for #CampLitsy. 5d

Audition | Katie Kitamura

Pickpick

Another great book by Kitamura. Her sparse, detached writing style is perfect for this story. I‘m a fan of David Lynch‘s films, and reading this felt like watching Lost Highway for the first time - I could never get my footing in the story before it shifted and blurred again. So good. Excited this will be our first book for #CampLitsy this year!

Billypar You sold me with the Lynch comparison! 5d
Ruthiella So looking forward to this. I definitely also want to go back and read her debut as well. 5d
BarbaraBB Now I want to read it even more. Very happy this will be our first #CampLitsy25 read! 5d
squirrelbrain Yay - great review! Looking forward to this even more now! 5d
Lesliereadsalot Excited to read this one! I‘m next at my library. 5d
