Second ever Steven King book. (audio). The story itself is neat; couple found each other during a government experiment had a kid who can create fires. Now they are running from said agency. What I did not like was how sexualized they made this 8 year old girl. Almost dnf‘ed because of that. Couldn‘t stand how those agents thought and reacted around her. Don‘t have much else to say because, that took over my perspective of the story from then on.

I love Stephen King, but this one was a bit rough for me. He had me hooked in the beginning and the middle… then it dwindled to this mediocre long winded time of boredom. Which I understand it was setting up for the big finale. But it was drawn out more than it probably should have been. Still a great book I‘m happy to have on my shelf!

Book #13 of 2023: “Firestarter” by Stephen King

An oldie from 1980, complete with an afterword about Cold War experiments with psi-ops. It‘s not one of my favorite King books but still engaging and a pretty quick read.

🎧 A couple meets while participating in a government research program, walking away with special powers. They get married and have a little girl named Charlie with special powers of her own.

I enjoyed seeing Charlie‘s grow into her powers. It‘s a long cat & mouse game with Charlie and her father running from the government. The people they meet, those that help them, their incarceration and manipulation.

Good story.

Though the plotting can feel jagged at times, this is still a very well-written work. We're given plenty of reasons to be invested in the fates of Charlie and her father, the tension never truly leaves the reader, and the insight into the inner workings of The Shop is fascinating. It serves as a sobering reminder of what our own government is capable of, what they have done in the past, and what they may yet do in the dark and distant future. 4/5

Not as scary as I usually like from King, and I prefer the larger cast of characters in other books. Other than that, this ticked all the boxes. I always fly through his books no matter how long they are. The creepiness in this is much more psychological than many of his other works I‘ve read. I‘ll never look at a kitchen sink garbage disposal the same, that‘s for sure… 😖 My heart broke for Charlie. I wanted to scoop her up and protect her.

I'm not sure how to rate or review this. For reasons that I can't explain, this is the fifth book that I've read by Stephen King, even though I don't enjoy Stephen King. And this book is good...for Stephen King. So if you tend to enjoy his novels, maybe you should read this one...I guess?

This is my least liked by Stephen King so far. Most of it was a lot of science talk that went over my head. And also just talking and living. It was suppose to be horror/Thriller and I did not get any of that. You have a girl who can start fires with her mind, how did he miss the mark so badly? 1/5

Stephen King is always great. This is a story about a government experiment gone wrong and test subjects just trying to survive. The remains of a family with special abilities are on the run for their life. This really gives me Under The Dome type of feelings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Every time I opened this book, The Prodigy song (same title) popped into my head, taking me back a couple of decades. If you don‘t know it, look it up! 🤘🏼 A “Lot 6” experiment eventually leads to a child born with a dangerous pyrokinetic power. Now, the government agency responsible wants her dead. Solid story, but too long-winded even though it‘s brief by King‘s standards. #bookclub

This reminds me of a cross between Carrie and The Dead Zone. Not as amazing as The Stand, but I really enjoyed it. I wanted the best for little Charlie McGee, I wanted the worst for the bad villain John Rainbird, and I adored Irv and Norma Manders, the farmers who wanted to live peacefully but were brought into the Big Government Secret because they were nice folks. I should rewatch the movie now.

This was fine, entertaining at times but it was too long; felt dated & campy. The writing was a little off color, probably acceptable for the early 80‘s but I don‘t think it would get published today without some editing & polishing. A light pick. 🎉In non book news my niece qualified today and will skate at tomorrow‘s pairs long program. This book gripped me from the first page.

Andy and Vicky met at a scientific drug trial being administered by the US government. Neither of them knew what was being injected into them, they just knew that the 200$ volunteer fee was well needed.

No one considered that the fact that after the trial Andy and Vicky would start dating, go on to have Charlie, a baby girl with the ability to start fires.

Fabulous book!

First finished book of 2021 (started 2020). After much reading of technical and heavy history & politics a good story was much needed, and this delivered. Secret government experiments, a father and child trying to survive, a good wholesome old American couple wanting to help out, pyrokinesis and a bit of mind control. Not overly long, disturbing, horrific or gorey and so it suited me well for a holiday read.

I thought I had read this before, but nothing came back to me while reading.
