The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession, it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s. If anyone is headed to Dublin soon - PLEASE GO TO THE VINTAGE COCKTAIL CLUB!

Appeared as a dark and unimportant building, with a distressed door which you buzz. When you walk through you're into a speakeasy 1920s styled gentleman's room with dim lighting, welcoming sofa chairs and rustic tables - loved their cocktail book too! All those 20pgs

I love Vulture‘s 10 Favorite Books lists & I adore Lupita Nyong‘o so I‘m sharing the link to her list under the book she “has read the most times.” The Great Gatsby is not a favorite of mine but I need to try it again & see if I find the “decadent melancholy” Lupita loves more appealing than I did in school.😉

Day 5: Favourite classic novel.
.
Don‘t judge me! This is the only choice I have as it is literally the only classic I have read cover...to cover...
.
My aim this year though is to try and read all of Jane Austen and Wuthering Heights. Hopefully I can do it 🤞

How much of a historical fiction purist are you? I‘m loosey goosey about the books I review on my historical book review site because there‘s so much historical relevance in both literature and books that take place after the time frame most people think historical should be set. Read more: https://pickingbooks.com/blog/historical-fiction-definition

mydearwatson I always viewed historical fiction as fiction that takes place in the past, not necessarily fiction that was written in the past. I haven‘t actually read your article, just throwing in my two cents 😉. 2mo
Crazeedi I just enjoy books aet in any historical time, history is anything that occured yesterday or before! 2mo
PickingBooks @mydearwatson Agreed! 🙌😁 2mo
See All 6 Comments
PickingBooks @mydearwatson You are correct. 😁Historical fiction is fiction set in the past, but you can read literature written in the past as historical fiction. It gives you a new perspective on both the book and the time it was written. 2mo
rwmg "To be reviewed on Picking Books, books in both genres must be written at least five years before the majority of the events described" Wouldn't this make them prophecy rather than history? 2mo
PickingBooks @rwmg thank you for catching my error! I meant to say at that they must be written at least 5 years after the majority of the events described. The way it‘s written would make the books prophesy, wouldn‘t that be something! 😆 2mo

1. I'm 18 years older than my youngest sibling; I met my husband when I wrecked into his car; I've watched the sun rise from the easternmost point of the US
2. Tagged!
3. Maggie Stiefvater when she was touring for All the Crooked Saints. She was an absolute delight.
4. Just temporarily, cold - layers, space heaters, etc. But if you're talking about all day long, I'd rather be too hot than chilly.

I really enjoyed the feel of this story, but was quite surprised with the turn the book took in the second half, most unexpected. Really pleased I finally got to read this, but felt quite a sad and reflected ending. If you haven‘t read it yet, it is quite a quick and easy read.

ValerieAndBooks It is quite good 💖. First time I read it was in high school. And if you look closely at the cover, those are naked ladies swimming in the pupils of the eyes. I never knew until it was pointed out in 3mo

I finally got around to reading this classic after seeing and hearing it referenced throughout my lifetime literary journey. It felt like a very nicely paced, structured, compact novel. I can't say many of the characters strike me as likeable except perhaps the narrator, but maybe that's the point. Overall, the story is perhaps a warning about letting an obsession with the past derail one's future.

I had to read this for school, and I honestly thought I‘d hate it. (Spoiler alert: I didn‘t!) I think what I loved most about this book was the writing style, the way Fitzgerald describes early New York paints a beautiful picture of the glitz and glamour of the time period. The characters weren‘t ones I was incredibly attached to, but I felt like I understood them, and I liked how they weren‘t supposed to be redeemable. Overall, really good!

rretzler 😻 We have an older cat (whose brother is no longer with us). When we got 3 new kittens, one of the kittens decided to befriend the older cat. It‘s a pretty one-sided friendship, but after 2 years, the younger cat (Mycroft )still wants to snuggle with Picasso, much to Picasso‘s annoyance. He‘s learning to tolerate Mycroft, but Mycroft is bigger and sometimes cuddles by laying most of his body on top of Picasso. 5mo
