I‘d call this less a retelling of Beauty and the Beats and more a fully-fleshed telling. It was an enjoyable enough read, but didn‘t contain anything new or add anything to the bones of the story. There was magic there, but not fleshed out or explained, and the third act climax felt forced. On the other hand, the descriptions and imagery were lush and beautiful. So it all lands somewhere in the middle for me.

Also started Jazz by Toni Morrison in print and tagged book on audio. Maybe I'll finish one more book before 2024.

Beat a personal record in 2021! Happy new year y‘all! 🎉🎉🎉

4 ⭐ I really enjoyed this book. It had a dreamy, relaxing quality that, while slow-paced, actually read quite quickly, and I found myself immersed in the world that McKinley created. I truly wanted to explore Beast's castle and learn its mysteries. I was left with some unanswered questions, and the ending is a bit abrupt, but that isn't unusual for a lot of fairy tales, which is what this book is. ⬇

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved the middle of it, but the exposition went on entirely too long and the ending wrapped up entirely too quickly. Very oddly paced

I'm glad I read it. Not overly sweet. Likeable characters. It seems that Disney used some elements of this version. And, I am happy to say that I can use it for 1978 #CenturyReads from last year's goal. #FairytaleReadingChallenge @Charityann

I loved the family dynamics introduced with Beauty and her siblings. I felt it added a lot to the original tale. The descriptions of the castle were very well done and painted a wonderful image in my mind as I read.

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so. Robin McKinley‘s writing is gorgeous, as always, and this book was hard to put down. The story mostly followed the original fairy tale—to the point of sometimes using the exact dialogue from the version I read as a child—other than Beauty thinking she isn‘t beautiful and moving with her family to a small town when her father loses his fortune. There always seemed to be a lot of tension that was gently defused.

Why the heck haven‘t I read this before?! It is lovely.

A reread just for the all-round familiar niceness of it. I'm going to reread Rose Daughter, too; it's fascinating to see an author do two versions of the same story. This version is a little less ornate, with less of a feeling of a whole magical world surrounding it, but I enjoy the characters a lot. And despite talking about the relative simplicity, there are some excellent descriptions.

Such a deliciously sweet retelling of Beauty and The Beast. No surprises, no disappointments. The ending felt a bit rushed but that would be my only complaint.

Feeling nostalgic this winter weekend, so I pulled some favorites for a reread.

If you‘d told my childhood self that I‘d grow up to have a cozy attic with a snuggly dog and a window seat where I can read fairy tales all day... well, I don‘t know that I would have done anything differently, actually. 📚🐶💕

I‘ve had this #retelling on my TBR for a while, so when I saw it was available on Overdrive I pounced. It did not disappoint. In the spirit of full disclosure I will admit that I never watched any of the movie or TV adaptations of this #fairytale but one day I‘ll get around to seeing the one where Angela Lansbury sings.

I enjoyed this retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast. It offered a slightly different back story and family dynamics, which added to my interest in this retelling.

Of all the fairytales I abosultely love the Beauty and the Beast. I would find, buy and read all types of retellings of this story. Robin McKinley did 2 I believe and I enjoyed both!

I finished this a few days ago and totally forgot to post! This was super cute for a children‘s book, although I do wish that maybe the ending hadn‘t happened so rapidly? I feel like we spent a ton of time with her family (which is great!) but didn‘t get to see a whole lot of her bonding with beast. Otherwise, I had fun with this read!

Doing a little research for my notes before I send off my #LMPBC book (a week late I know!!) Enjoyed this retelling of Beauty and the Beast. McKinley captures and emphasizes some interesting aspects of the original tale. The supporting characters have a sweet story arc. I felt the ending wrapped up too briskly. The backstory on Beast was clever but left me with more questions about the family, the household, the magician, and Beast himself.
