The Hollow
The Hollow: A Hercule Poirot Mystery | Agatha Christie
79 posts | 79 read | 30 to read
A far-from-warm welcome greets Hercule Poirot as he arrives for lunch at Lucy Angkatells country house. A man lies dying by the swimming pool, his blood dripping into the water. His wife stands over him, holding a revolver. As Poirot investigates, he begins to realize that beneath the respectable surface lies a tangle of family secrets and everyone becomes a suspect.

I like this one. It's quiet and puts a bit of a twist on the usual Poirot storyline. A discontented doctor takes a break from doing clinical trials on impoverished women without informed consent to spend a quiet weekend in the country with his wife. Interestingly, the main part of the mystery involves the quiet weekend, not the cavalier drug trials.

rwmg I must admit the tagged book wasn't one of my favourites, but yes I do love a good Agatha Christie. Currently reading “After the Funeral“ 8mo

I laughed out loud at the scene of the servants dressing down the young kitchen maid for not adequately shielding her ladyship from the police!

“If you see me with a pistol in my hand, the proper thing to do is come to me and say, ‘Mr. Gudgeon, will you be so kind as to give me an explanation?‘ What you should *not* have done is to go babbling off to a policeman — and only a Sergeant at that!”

… or whatever else strikes my fancy I suppose, LOL. No, no, stick to the plan:

The Hollow is for my Agatha Christie fan club (hosted on fable - if anyone is interested, I‘ll post the link) but I‘m late and they‘ve already moved on to The Labours of Hercules 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oscar Wars is for my LA-themed book club (hosted on Discord; if anyone is interested, I‘ll post the link) meeting July 9

1984 is for #14books14weeks

Poirot is invited to lunch at The Hollow, where he is disappointed to find a murder performance on his arrival. Except it's not an act and someone's just been shot.
Another great character study by Mrs Christie

Mehso-so

Poirot arrives at his neighbours' for lunch only to find Gerda Christow standing over her husband's body with a gun. It looks too staged to be real. And yet John Christow is dead.

I found most of the characters in this one rather tiresome and the murder delayed far too long. So-so verging on Pan.

I know #20in4 goes til the end of today this time, but I'm calling it at 4 days, the end of Monday, anyways. It just fit so nicely with the end of the month.

Very pleased with my progress this time. 5 books finished (even though 3 were almost done before the readathon started) and read for 10.5 hours. Looking forward to next month's! Thanks as always @Andrew65!

Read just over an hour yesterday for 3:30 so far in the readathon, but more importantly, I finished my assignment so now I can focus on #20in4!

Starting today with some #audiostitching to the tagged. I'm getting close to the end of this ornament finally! Still a lot of backstitching to go.

Bk4 of August & #LitsySummerCampReadathon & Bk1 of #AwesomeAugust #readathon is done. A reread by audiobook on Scribd, this has always been one of my favourite Dame Agatha books. One of her more convoluted murders, it‘s set in a big country house in England with a shooting, an unfaithful man & too many suspects. Loved it👍 #ChristieCrimeClub #ReadChristie2021 #ReadItAgainSam #AudiobookChallenge2021 #BookspinBingo #BritishCrimeClassicsChallenge👇

Both of these have mysteries built around romantic relationships. Five Little Pigs—Poirot is asked to re-evaluate the facts from a 16 year-old murder. He interviews everyone, then has the people involved write their accounts of that time. I enjoyed it, but it‘s repetitive due to the format.
Tagged—different than previous books because you get to know the victim before the murder & continue the story w/ minimal Poirot investigation. A good one.

I really liked this one. There were a lot of characters and a lot of points of view in this one. A lot of awful people too. However, such a good whodunnit! I definitely didn‘t see the mastermind behind it. Though it didn‘t age very well. A few phrases that would no longer be used today.

It surprised me how much I enjoyed this book! A locked-door mystery of sorts, but Christie allows the reader to get a sense of the players prior to the murder, which I appreciated. January book for the #readchristie2021 challenge.

The mystery was clever and this Christie had a bit more character development with its multiple points of view. Always enjoy Poirot and his inner dialogue. Never enjoy the racism that was unfortunately common in this time period and with Christie. Read as part of the #readchristie2021 challenge hosted by OfficialAgathaChristie on IG 🤓

Hey #LMPBC #GroupN What titles do you want to read? I‘m thinking the less well known titles- that is how I found the tagged book and By the Pricking of My Thumbs. Thoughts?
@Laughterhp @hwestfall @Marmie7

Laughterhp I agree about lesser known titles. Especially since I‘m part of an Agatha Christie book club and I‘m reading her books in publishing order. Both of the ones you mention sound good, so I‘d be okay with either. I like Poirot over Tommy & Tuppence, but I‘ve never read a bad Christie. 😂 I‘ll look through the ones I own and post tomorrow. 3y
hwestfall I have only ever read Murder on the Orient Express so whatever you choose will be perfect for me. 3y
Marmie7 I've read By the Pricking of my Thumbs, but not the other one. I'll post my choices later today. 3y

I read this Apr 5-20 and rated it 4 ⭐️. Overall I liked the mystery and the characters. I am not too sure if I really found the addition of Poirot good or bad. It took me longer than normal to read this one because of real life. For most of this month, it‘s been a struggle to read.
