Case one: A little girl goes missing in the night. Case two: A beautiful young office worker falls victim to a maniac's apparently random attack. Case three: A new mother finds herself trapped in a hell of her own making - with a very needy baby and a very demanding husband - until a fit of rage creates a grisly, bloody escape.Thirty years after the first incident, as private investigator Jackson Brodie begins investigating all three cases, startling connections and discoveries emerge . . .

It's official. Atkinson is one of my favorite writers. This has a totally different voice than Life After Life, and I want to read them all. Although...I think I might *read* the other Jackson Brodies bc the narrator was slightly annoying.

I can‘t believe it‘s been a decade since I last re-read this book! But I have to admit that a lot of this felt brand new to me!! I love the way Atkinson creates her characters who are all so vivid! The plot is great, too and I am so excited to get to binge on this series- and after that, I definitely plan on checking out the tv adaptation! It‘s rainy out so I‘m enjoying my favorite inside #ReadingPlace! #30JuneBooks

Book #4 of the Modern Mrs Darcy Must Read mystery list! This is a first book in the Jackson Brodie series. I am familiar with the author but havent heard of this series either. Lots of great new books for my TBR! This story follows three separate cases that the private investigator is trying to solve. The links between the three will stun you!! Definitely a must read! Mehso-so

It took me 4 weeks to read this book. The author seemed to write in an American style but she is British. The case histories were tedious. The book reminded me of a BBC drama that is so slow that after 15 minutes of the 1st episode you swap Channels for something better to watch. I started to enjoy the book just over half way through only to find the end as dreary as the start. The final explanations gave the stories closure not a fairytale ending

I picked this copy up from a book swop in Alcudia, Majorca. After 3 weeks I've only reached page 69. So far this has been the most tedious book I ever read. My partner said it has a good twist at the end. If it doesn't improve after I have read the case history section I'm bailing.

So this is Kate Atkinson number four for me. I really enjoy her writing and am meandering my way through her work.

This is a British detective novel and whilst I enjoyed it, I struggled to suspend judgement when presented with a private detective who has all these juicy crimes just land at his feet.

But maybe I need to get over myself & learn to go along for the ride 😂?

An enjoyable read 👍.

Really cool story with multiple crimes mysteries spread out over long period and same detective working through them all at present day. You get to hear each character‘s thoughts and insecurities and Jackson the detective is the best one. Maybe wouldn‘t jump into this one if you have little girls without knowing what it‘s about.

Novel needs no synopsis since most people are familiar with it. I picked this for my England trip as part of #backpackEurope bc it is set in Cambridge. I enjoyed the book. It was well written and an engaging read. I like how Atkinson plays around with the narrative structure and timeline.

Mini challenge: Pimm‘s drink. I was able to find Pimms so I made this and a mocktail (seltzer and lemonade) for my daughter.

Not sure where I am headed next

Daisey I don‘t have the time this summer to figure out a plan and read for this challenge, but I‘m absolutely loving seeing the posts so far!! 1y

It‘s a hot day in the sun today in Oxford. So I am thrilled to be sitting in the Christ Church library, reading for the afternoon! I have dreamt of doing this since I go the tour last year during my week living here. I‘m beyond excited. It‘s cool, the chair is stylish and comfortable and it smells amazing in this room!

My book has taken me to several places already in the first chapter. I have strolled along the river from Cambridge to grantchester, stopped for tea at the Orchard Tea rooms, punted, saw the horse races at Newmarket, and visited the Fitzwilliam museum.

This year Oxford really feels like school. Last year I did all the pre-reading (+ 3 extra books that added context) so the week just felt like a book club while staying in a museum. This year feels more like college because of a mix up in the syllabus & one book was swapped for another. I therefore need to read a new book by Friday. No problem, but there are a lot of outings & lectures between now & then. So I‘m up at 5:55 am, starting the book!

JillR Love Kate Atkinson 💕 1y
HardcoverHearts @JillR I have only read Life After Life, which I thought was brilliant. So I am thrilled to have a reason to start this series. 1y

I‘ve arrived in England and was able to enjoy some afternoon tea while cracking open my first book. I‘m a bit jet lagged so will probably be making my way slowly through my first book and then will have to decide if I want to travel around the UK or on to France.

#backpackEurope

Heathrow was pretty crowded and I ran into several Litsy/GR/blog folks

Dulcinella I enjoyed that book! 1y

#readingresolutions day 25 #mysterymonday @Jess7

I read this one because Stephen King had praised it so much. I was not disappointed. I rarely am when I read one of his suggestions.

Tashreads I ❤️ Jackson Brodie 1y
madamereadsalot1 @Tashreads I do too! And apparently there's a show of it and Jason Issacs (Lucius Malfoy) plays him in the film version of it. I haven't seen it though. Just trailers and promo pics. 1y

Okay but not great. The pace was grindingly slow for much of it and the third mystery (the axe murder) felt largely extraneous to the rest of the story. It also beggars belief that the police didn't solve ANY of these cases when Brodie largely stumbled across the evidence decades later. Right. But I did enjoy the characters and I like Brodie, even if I could have done without the obligatory broken marriage and domestic drama.

It's already clear that Victor is not a particularly good person and yet substitute "mathematics" for "books" and I'm sort of with him in this one. Except I'm not married with children so I get points for that.

saresmoore 1. I can attest that you are, assuredly, nothing like Victor beyond this particular comparison. 2. You get, like, triple points. I can attest to that, too. 😬 2y
saresmoore Such a good book! 2y

Moray_Reads @saresmoore 😅 The way these characters think about their children and spouses is pretty worrying 2y
saresmoore Isn‘t it? Either obsessive, dismissive, or abusive. Small wonder that Brodie is unattached. 2y
LeahBergen 😂😂 I love this series. 2y
MariettaSG I am married with children but understand this with either the use of ‘mathematics‘ or ‘books‘, 😮 2y
Moray_Reads @MariettaSG I think lots of people must sympathise with it to a greater or lesser extent. Hopefully not everyone deals with it by basically removing themselves from family life and leaving the spouse to cope alone as Victor does! 2y
GabrielleDubois The important thing is to know who you are and to be happy with it, it? 🙂 2y

I‘ve got the TBR “blues”, apparently lol. My next 3 books tbr... which one is your favorite? #tbr #feelingbluesy #bluemonday

aarchamb I have not read the others but I really liked The Bone Clocks. It was weird but good all at the same time. 2y
kristilabrie Nice! I loved Slade House which pulls from the same universe I believe. Looking forward to reading it 🤓 2y

Mehso-so

This was halfway between a pick & a so-so. I didn‘t feel invested in the story until the last quarter, and while I found the resolution of the cases intriguing, it took a bit too long before I cared about how they would resolve! Overall, too many unlikable characters who weren‘t interesting enough to make up for their unlikableness. I‘ve heard better reviews of Atkinson‘s other books, so I still plan to read Life After Life & hope I like it more!

BarbaraJean @CareBear I‘ve heard good things about that one, too! I‘ll probably read Life After Life first since it‘s on my shelves, but A God in Ruins is on the list as well. 😊 2y
CareBear I think that‘s the order they are supposed to be read in, lol! 2y

Started this one last night... another blue book to match my bookmark. 😊 I‘m not sure when I bought this, but I remember putting it on my mental #TBR while living in the San Francisco Bay Area... which would make it somewhere around 12-15 years ago. 😮 It‘s my first Kate Atkinson, and I‘m enjoying it so far.

APLitlife I bought that about 10 years ago! Never read it. May be time for me to crack it open. 2y
Zelma I love this book and have recommended it to so many people since. 👍 2y

#riotgrams challenge day 9: Beloved Series
Kate Atkinson is one of my favorite authors and I love all 4 of the Jackson Brodie literary mysteries. I‘m not a big series person, but these are wonderful!
