Swan Song
Swan Song | Robert R. McCammon
McCammons epic bestselling novel about a girl psychic struggling to survive in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust Something flashes in nine-year-old Swans brain, telling her that trouble is coming. Maybe its her mother, fed up with her current boyfriend and ready to abandon their dismal trailer park and seek a new home. But something far worse is on the horizon. Death falls from the skynuclear bombs which annihilate American civilization. Though Swan survives the blast, this young psychics war is just beginning. As the survivors try to make new lives in the wasteland, an evil army forms, intent on murdering all those tainted with the diseases brought by fallout. When Swan finds a mysterious amulet that could hold the key to humankinds salvation, she draws the attention of a man more dangerous than any nuclear bomb. To rescue mankind, this little girl will have to grow up fast.

🎧 I enjoyed this story. I listened to the audiobook. Well written & narrated.

Swan, Josh, Sister, Ryan, Glory and a plethora of secondary good/evil characters.

The main characters are well defined and their stories fully explored. At the end I wasn‘t left with any questions because those that I had were left unanswered for a reason. Speculation.

Global nuclear war.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

Twainy The humanity that remains is disfigured from the radiation, some have heads slowly being covered by an impregnable material, changed in other ways or dying.

There‘s a definite struggle between good & evil with an ultimate evil character.

“God” will finish what the global military-political arena started. Or will he?

I love end of the world, dystopian novels. (Multiple TW‘s. This was written in the 80‘s)

I‘m adding this one to my list of favorites. This is a chunkster (917 pages) but so worth the time. We follow different survivors after nuclear missiles have ravaged the world. As they move across the country, some will come together to rebuild and some to destroy, but they will all meet to fight for good or evil. I loved many of the characters and even shed a few tears. #Booked2023 #GiftedbyaLitten

Bookzombie Thank you @Reggie for this one. I‘m so glad I finally read a McCammon book. It was so good. 2y
Reggie Yayyyyyy. Sometimes when I‘m at a funeral and they say Amen, I think to myself- that‘s the password. Lol. There was a lot to love and be scared of in this book. And he‘s good at mixing the human heart with the horror. Glad you liked it, Margie. 🖤🖤🖤 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie Lol. I was just sitting here thinking about Job‘s mask and what would our inside face look like. Also, while I would have loved Paul to have survived, his final act killing “Lord” Alvin was very satisfying. 2y

An epic, and very dark, post-apocalyptic novel. I did enjoy this, but struggled sometimes to return to its gruesome subject matter. Often compared to The Stand, and I was not immune to that. I read The Stand as a pre-teen and while I know nostalgia gives me 20/20 hindsight, Swan Song just doesn‘t live up to it. The ending is quite tepid for a book of this magnitude, and I didn‘t fall in love with the characters as much as I would‘ve liked to. 3⭐️

braddsibbersen To be fair, the climax of The Stand is a bit underwelming too... 3y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @braddsibbersen You‘re not wrong. The climax/ending of The Stand is not the best part of the book. The journey and characters make the book, and I believe King did it better. Still glad I read this though! I did like it! (edited) 3y

I absolutely loved two aspects of this book. One that this book is about never giving up hope. That there is always something worth fighting and taking that next step for. Two, there is so much character development throughout this book.

One thing I want to note is the comparison between this novel and The Stand by Stephen King. I don‘t really see them being the same except for in the aspect of good verses evil.

Full review of GoodReads

KathyWheeler I‘ve had this book for years but haven‘t read it. I did wonder if there was any similarities between it and The Stand. 3y
AuntCourtney @KathyWheeler it is but it isn‘t. The only similarity it really has for me was the good vs evil aspect. As far as plot it‘s two very different scenarios. Plague and religion compared to nuclear war and magic 3y
KathyWheeler @Curlybookowl I might pull out my copy and finally read it. 3y
AuntCourtney @KathyWheeler I hope you enjoy it. It was my number 1 read of 2021 3y

#21DaysofHorror Day 13. My favorite post apocalyptic novel written by one of my favorite authors. Nuclear missiles were launched and several characters spread across the country will meet up to either fight for good or evil. McCammon writes some real scenes of horror, one in a movie theatre where Faces of Death is showing, and another, a fight in the parking lot of a Kmart. Great characters, great story, and a lot of horror in this chunkster.

vivastory I really want to read this one. It's sitting on my TBR shelves, but I just have to be in the right mental space for a chunkster. When I am though there is absolutely nothing in the world like a horror epic 3y
Reggie @vivastory it‘s been 20 years since I‘ve read it but if you wanna buddy read let me know. I‘d love to pick it up again. 3y

Oh man, did I go on a JOURNEY with this one! I was up and down. Midway, I was lagging. But I pushed through and I‘m glad I did. Evil cannot survive in the face of Hope. Think of what humans can be. Create the future you want. Make your inside face more beautiful than your outside face. 😊 I cared about the characters. Were there flaws? Sure, but I don‘t think they detract from the overall feeling this left. #PBSGreatAmericanRead

vivastory I've had this on my shelves for awhile. I was thinking of starting it soon. I know some people say they like it more than The Stand. 3y
AshleyHoss820 @vivastory It was on my shelf for quite some time as well! It kept staring at me, so I decided to spend the summer with a chunkster..but I read it FAST. It‘s decent sci-fi. The supernatural element isn‘t quite necessary. It can be a bit heavy-handed occasionally with the religious undertones. I didn‘t like the sudden racism towards the end toward one of my favorite characters. Overall, I enjoyed the overarching message of the power of hope. (edited) 3y

AshleyHoss820 @vivastory Doggone it! Now I gotta read The Stand so I can compare! 🤣 That ones also been simultaneously intimidating me and beckoning me from my bookshelves! 3y

This. Was. Amazing. I loved every second of it, and I think that‘s the fastest I‘ve ever read such a long book. Apocalypse, evil men, kind-of magic, redemption, fights for survival...I can‘t believe I‘ve never read this until now. I absolutely recommend it!

Reggie I say this a lot about this book. It‘s been over 20 years and the part that I remember that freaks me out is when the Devil guy is maniacally laughing in the movie theatre watching Faces of Death while his face morphs into the people who look like they just happened to be at the accident but actually caused it. And the Kmart scene. I need to reread this. Glad you liked it. 4y
Lauranahe I found all the keloids so gross. Every time they cracked open, foe some reason, it just really, really grossed me out. The sound of the cracking, the pieces scattered around...yikes. But what was underneath was fascinating! 4y

So I tried so hard because I both loved the book but wanted it to end. Bailed about halfway through (still had about 400 pages) It was just so long already and I had much more to go.

That Kmart scene was crazy though, first time in a while I was yelling at the character don‘t and why!!!!!!!!

This is an epic post-apocalyptic novel, it's similar to The Stand by Stephen King. While The Stand is about a super-flu, this is about the aftermath of a nuclear war between America/Russia and a bunch of survivors struggling to live among the ruins while a demonic man stalks the land. 👹

Mehso-so

This one gets mentioned on most of the 'top 10 best apocalyptic books' lists so I thought I'd give it a go. It's a long book and there's a hint of The Stand in there (good vs evil... supernatural forces etc). Overall I enjoyed it, but was a bit long and needed a good edit. The ending was a good example of what looks like an author that was fed up with it and didn't quite know how to end it, so took the 'and they lived happily ever after ' route.

My first 5-star read for 2019 – thanks for the fantastic #NewYearWhoDis recommendation @LauraJ! This epic post-apocalyptic novel follows several groups of survivors after the United States has been reduced to a wasteland due to a nuclear war. The edition that I read weighs in at 919 pages – it‘s a hefty book – and based on the page count, I expected there to be some lulls in the story. There wasn‘t (at least not for me). candority @C.Perone @TNbookworm @Reggie I think I‘m going to love it too! I‘m prepared to be scared/creeped out. 6y
juliegumdrop I would like to try this too. Intimidating because of its size. Hope you enjoy it! 6y
ColleenIsReading One of my all time faves! I‘ve reread several times. I wrote my college senior thesis about nuclear war in science fiction, and this book was a big part of it. 6y
candority @juliegumdrop It is intimidating! But I‘m loving it so far! I read over 100 pages in one sitting - it moves along quite well! 6y
candority @ColleenIsReading I can see why! That‘s such a cool topic to write your thesis on 😊 6y
ColleenIsReading It worked out really well, the summer I was doing the main part of my research, I had gathered up various novels and stories but I kept saying “too bad The Stand has the flu instead of nukes because it would be so much fun to write about...” Then I wandered into a bookstore and found the original paperback edition, just published! And so many similar themes to The Stand, I was delighted. 6y
candority @ColleenIsReading Wow, what a fantastic coincidence - it was meant to be! I‘m surprised by how many similarities there are between the two books. I‘m sure McCammon faced a lot of criticism when Swan Song was published. The Stand was a five star read for me, but so far, I‘m enjoying Swan Song more than it! 6y

#18in2018

Most of these are #blameitonlitsy reads.

My absolute favorite fiction for the year is Swan Song. Robert McCammon is an incredible storyteller. After reading this, I bought several of his other books, which I plan to read in 2019.

My favorite non-fiction is Becoming. The writing is warm, welcoming, and inspirational.

The book that I feel is underrated and that everyone should read is River of Teeth. I mean it has hippos after all 😁

TrishB Swan Song and Becoming are in mine too 😁 6y

McCammon is a new favorite of mine, at least for audiobooks. Long, dense stories that you can listen to for hours. This was really good! A great post apocalyptic drama.

TrishB Loved this too 💕 6y
Reggie Ohhhh, this book, I should reread it this year. 6y

Okay, THIS is what I wanted The Stand to be! Both books feature survivors of a world catastrophe traveling the U.S. trying to rebuild their lives. The themes are more focused in Swan Song...good vs evil, redemption, belonging. The writing is grittier and I easily lost myself in the story. Not once did I check to see how many more pages left ‘til the end of this #chunkster. (I frequently peeked while reading The Stand.). A rare 5-Star read!

Eggbeater That pug though! 😍 6y
TheLibrarian What a cute pup! 6y
tricours I also thought it was better than The Stand! 6y

Mehso-so

The premise of this book is that the world is pretty much wiped out due a nuclear holocaust and the few remaining people left are split into two groups: the good trying to bring hope and life back into the world and the bad trying to further destroy. Sound familiar at all? If you‘ve read The Stand by Stephen King, it might. Granted there are some differences but at times this book felt unoriginal and definitely waaaay to long. #mehbook

Slajaunie That is what I thought as I read the description. Definitely a King knock-off. 6y

Why did I start a 920 page book over the weekend? I am enjoying it.
Yesterday was not only Halloween...it was also Abby‘s 15th birthday. She fell asleep in her quinceañera dress.

This book is incredible. Probably one of my favorites of all time now. I loved the story, I loved the setting, and I loved the characters.

This is my first McCammon book and I am definitely a fan now.

If you like end of the world dystopian chunksters, read this book. 💜📖

LauraJ I have this deck too and this was the image in my head throughout the story. 6y
