Just finished reading this article. I'm glad the number of independent bookstores is growing, but I don't think every place is getting to enjoy the bounty. My community has a books a million and a used bookstore (trade ins, no special orders or new books at all.) I don't think e-books are dead either.

The bookstore situation where I live makes me sad.

https://observer.com/2018/11/ebook-sales-decline-independent-bookstores/amp/

Sace My husband and I are thinking about where to retire and we are including bookstore as one of the things to consider. 6y
9999 I live on the Arabian peninsula. Magazines and movies are edited for content. I am completely dependent on my ereaders to obtain books. There is a library here that is very nice, but limited. Those that can take advantage of their independent book stores are very lucky. But sadly, you don't have to be half way across the world to not have access to one. 6y
Amie I hope ebooks aren't dead because I find them very convenient, although they can't take the place of the beauty of a physical book. I think ebooks are priced too high, which might account for the decline in sales 6y
See All 36 Comments
Amie Oops, pressed send too soon. If a physical book and ebook are similarly priced, I'll go for the physical book. I think ebooks should cost less than print. 6y
lynneamch I can vouch for East Tennessee. There is Ann Patchett 's Parnassus, of course, in Nashville. But, Knoxville has Union Ave Bookstore, which just expanded! There is always something going on with the theatre, symphony, museum, and university, as well as the Smoky Mountains nearby. I love that a bookstore is part of your retirement criteria. 📚💖 6y
Kappadeemom I don‘t have a local bookstore, so I rely on my Kindle and my Books a Million too 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I read primarily on a Kindle as well. The town I live in has a independent bookstore, but I can‘t afford it it‘s so outrageously priced. I on occasion drop in and buy something, but I couldn‘t primarily read from there. I will say the pricing of ebooks has a huge affect on what I purchase. Everything becomes a kindle daily deal eventually so I usually wait for it to go on sale. 6y
Shannon_McKinney Where I live there are literally no bookstores in the whole town. However we have a wonderful library system with 6 different locations. If I want to purchase books I have to drive 30-40 minutes out of town to the nearest bookstores. About 30 minutes away I can find myself at a half price books. They‘re okay, but definitely not my favorite. If I‘m willing to drive 40 minutes (which I usually am haha) we have a wonderful store in Dayton, OH... 6y
Shannon_McKinney Called One Dollar Book Swap. Every book inside paperback, hard cover, everything is one dollar! They also own a Murphy‘s Used Book Store in Kettering, OH the highest priced books are usually 3-4 dollars. In Kettering we also have Books-a-million and a Barnes and Noble but I rarely go to the big name chains. I own a kindle but I could literally count on one hand how many books I‘ve purchased on it.I mostly use overdrive provided by my library on it 6y
queerbookreader I get most of my books from the library! And the ones I own mainly come from thrift stores cos that's all I can afford. I don't like how folks like this article are all "print is dead???? Ebooks are dead?? Reading is dead??" I think ppl are really finding the right equilibrium between reading mediums, that's all. I've read articles about audiobooks now and "are they going to ruin print??" ppl love to be dramatic and can't see a life with variety 6y
Amiable @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I'm so glad to hear that you have bookstores on your list of criteria for retirement locations! My husband and I are in the same boat right now, and people give me strange looks when I list the things we are insisting on: a walkable city with access to bookstores, tea shops, good healthcare, a university and cultural activities. The access to healthcare they understand--the bookstores and tea shops? Not so much! 6y
Samplergal I use the library for print, audible, and ebooks. I buy print and ebooks. I think it is, for me, the book. If it‘s something I want to keep, it‘s a book and I will buy it. If it‘s a “not worth a buy” I‘ll get from library. Either e book or print, although living near the beach, I love my paperwhite. I only get audiobooks from the library because I‘m cheap. The hold list is long and sometimes I get the books first. 6y
Sace @sskk I've heard this from many people outside the states, that e-readers provide content they otherwise not get...especially if they were to wait for a translation. They feel lucky to be able to read English and to have more available because of eReaders. 6y
Sace @Samplergal my library is ok, but not fabulous. They no longer use overdrive. Only Hoopla and cloud library. I can find some things, but not the latest. Sometimes we have to wait for those. 6y
Sace @Amiable my husband wants good restaurants and movie theaters too. 😁 Neither one of us likes driving much so big cities are out unless we can find a bubble within a city. 6y
Sace @queerbookreader EXACTLY! I think readers are perfectly fine with a variety of sources/formats. Storytelling is never going to die. 6y
Sace @Shannon_McKinney that sounds wonderful! I would love to have a cheapie bookstore. It's such a shame I'm spoiled by the mild winters of the southeast 😂 6y
Sace @amie and @Ashley_Nicoletto WORD. I never quite get why print and e-books are so similarly priced. I understand the author needs to get paid, but is that where the majority of the pricing comes from? Because I would think an ebook would cost way less to publish than a physical book. 6y
Sace @lynneamch Nashville traffic though. 😢 Knoxville could be nice, but I'd have to find someplace to go the third week of October every year *cough* Roll Tide. 6y
Amiable @RestlessFickleBookHoarder That's another reason we are eyeing cities--I don't like driving, either! Looking at cities that have walkable neighborhoods (i.e. the "bubbles" you mention) and good public transportation. Honestly, we both went to college in Boston and would love to move back there. But the costs are insane. So we're looking for a Boston without the Boston prices. Not sure where that would be! 6y
8little_paws @Amiable oak park illinois is cheaper than Boston (but NOT cheap) however you could rent an apartment or buy a condo for a decent price. It's a very walkable neighborhood, with a fantastic library and an outstanding affordable local book store. 25 minutes by train to downtown chicago. 6y
8little_paws My 2 cents: these days my books primarily come from the library or botm. Occasionally I'll grab something at my local store. I never buy books on Amazon any more. I have a crazy backlog of tbr that I own, and moving this past summer really put that in perspective for me. Now I generally give away my books after I read them, unless I really love it. I'll never get rid of all of them! But i'm happy to pare down. 6y
Amiable @8little_paws Thanks for the info! It's funny that you should mention Oak Park -- my husband grew up in Arlington Heights in the NW suburbs and my in laws currently live in downtown Chicago! I am certain I could convince the hubby to give it a look. 👍🏼 6y
8little_paws @Amiable the prop taxes on single family homes here are off the charts, to be warned. However from what I understand they aren't bad on condos. I live in a rental on the east side of the town (the cheapest part, closest to the chicago border) and think it's an incredible value. I looked at Boston for college 20 years ago and at that time a studio was a little less than my 2bed apartment here. 6y
GingerAntics I think psychical books are making a resurgence...they are much easier for participating in seminar style classes, but the convenience of ebooks is never going to get old. Sorry to the author of this piece. 6y
AlaMich @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Ashley_Nicoletto @amie They didn‘t used to be priced the same. On the Book Riot podcast they discuss this issue from time to time and one of their theories is that publishers are actually trying to discourage ebook purchasing. But I remember when Kindle was first becoming a thing, and $9.99 was the price for a newly published title, $12.99 if it was a sure thing best-seller. But backlist titles were around $4.99 -$5.99 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @AlaMich Yes! I remember this as well and it was glorious. I adore the book riot podcasts and always enjoy a good audiobook pricing rant. Everything becomes a kindle daily deal eventually so I just wait it out or download from the library. 🤣 6y
AlaMich @Ashley_Nicoletto Yeah, Jeff is pretty funny when he gets on his soapbox about something. 😁 6y
Sace @8little_paws this is truly something I need to start thinking about. My shelves are insane right now and I would not want to box and move all of these books, so I need to get myself under control. 6y
Sace @GingerAntics agreed. When traveling nothing beats the ease of an e-reader. I can take as many books as I want with me. 6y
Sace @AlaMich interesting. I wonder why they would want to discourage ebook purchasing. I'll have to listen to more book Riot podcasts. 6y
AlaMich @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I can‘t remember what theoretical reason they gave, but it is strange. 6y
AlaMich @8little_paws The Oak Park library is fantastic!! We used to live in OP and my spouse grew up there. Sadly, we moved before the new library was built. We live in Evanston now, which has a lovely library, but I think OP has a nicer one. 6y
8little_paws @AlaMich I've lived in evanston as well! I have to agree...op has a better network of other libraries that all connect, so it's really really easy to get just about any book without a long wait. But the evanston library book sale is fantastic. 6y
Shannon_McKinney @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I would easily move to the southeast and join those in warm weather. 😂 I‘m a summer girl, and we visit Florida a lot (actually here right now & it‘s about to snow back home yuck 🤢) Hopefully I‘ll join you south-easterners someday, and gladly pay a bit more for books in exchange for warmer weather. 😂 6y
Sace @Shannon_McKinney I hear you! I grew up in Florida and have lived in the southeast all my life. Not sure I could ever handle a real winter! And honestly, cost of living is a lot less. 6y

Last weekend I did a field trip to Baltimore to visit Book Thing. It is a completely free bookstore and they take any and all donations. Totally worth a visit and a fun area since it is near the art museum.

Samplergal Isn‘t it wonderful? I lived a couple blocks from there about 8 yrs ago. LOVE them! 6y
TsundokuAleax @Samplergal I think it would be a problem if they had a better selection of what I like to read. Thankfully, that was not the case so self control was not hard. But I will be telling everyone about this place 6y
Samplergal @TsundokuAleax all the teachers grab stuff. When I lived there I found a ton of stuff. It‘s like a thrift shop. Some days are better than others. 6y

Minnesota friends - any Minneapolis book stores that I should check out while I‘m here? I have a few free days this week and I‘d like to do something other than get worked up about the football season finale causing traffic issues.

AshleyS I like Mager‘s and Quinn on Hennepin, and I haven‘t been there yet, but Boneshaker books on franklin is supposed to be pretty great-I have a friend that works there. (edited) 7y
LadyChristy Mager‘s & Quinn is great, we actually took our engagement photos there! Boneshaker Books is awesome! Wild Rumpus is super fun - it‘s a bookstore for young readers, but open to all ages and they have not only bookstore cats, but a bookstore ferret, chinchillas, rats, pigeons, and my personal favorite, a fuzzy black bantam chicken named Neil deGrasse Tyson! 😁 7y
LadyChristy But wait, there‘s more! Once Upon a Crime is a delightful stop for all things mystery and Birchbark Books (owned by author Louise Erdrich) is perhaps the coziest bookstore I‘ve ever been into! Happy exploring! Enjoy Minneapolis, we‘re a pretty bookish city! 📚 (edited) 7y

I've come across this excellent article today as well 😻😻😻😺😺😺👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻: http://mentalfloss.com/article/29928/10-excellent-bookstore-cats. Thought you might enjoy it; after all, it has bookstores and cats 😸! Do you know any of these fine individuals? 😻

MaureenMc Yes! I've met Spike at Left Bank Books (St. Louis) a few times. He looks very much like our cat, Onyx. 😸 7y
Nonaroo We went to a wonderful bookstore today in Cleveland (Loganberry Books, it's truly wonderful). The owner brings their cat to the store but it the cat's day off today (his name is Otis). I really love when bookstores have cats in them. Thanks for sharing the article. 7y
Ericmanciniwriter Twice told tales in Seattle practically had an army of cats. Good selection too 7y
JazzFeathers 😍😍😍😍 7y
scripturient They left out Kitty from Shakespeare and Co, Paris! ;) 7y

This is Nietzsche. He lives at one of my favourite bookstores and has his own line of tote bags. @lemonlime799 #catsoflitsy

queerbookreader He's more successful than I am. But I'm not mad look at all that fuzzy 8y
RaimeyGallant Is it the one in Wolseley? I think I remember a cat last time I was there. 8y

xicanti @RaimeyGallant he's a BC cat. I spent some time near Chilliwack earlier this year and went to visit him at The Book Man whenever I could swing it. 8y
RaimeyGallant I've been to Chilliwack, but I didn't have the pleasure of going to this bookstore. 8y
xicanti @RaimeyGallant I highly recommend it, if you're ever back that way. They've got a great selection, and if you use your own bag they make a donation to charity. Plus, Nietzsche's a sweet guy. 8y

We have a gem of an #indiebookstore in the city I work in; it's called Scuppernong Books. They are super nice people and have this huge space (for a small store) in the back they will let groups use (I had a grad class' final meeting there and I've held meetings there for my DKG chapter). Their collection is very eclectic and fresh, plus they have used books. Oh, they make an awesome latte, too! #aprilbookshowers

RealLifeReading That is a fun name! (edited) 8y

My favorite local #indiebookstore is The Reader's Corner. They have 25 and 50 cent books outside (under an awning) available 24/7 on the honor system. Inside there's an incredible collection, and the people who work there know what they have and will help you find it. It's a dangerous place to turn me loose in! #aprilbookshowers

RealLifeReading Wow. Looks like an awesome store! 8y
