Frankenstein was enjoyable enough. As usual it wasn‘t at all what I thought it would be, but that‘s not a bad thing. My favorite chapters were the ones where they were on the boat. My least favorites were when Frank would just faint for months at a time.

Picture is of the pumpkin I bought today because the lady at the register said it looked like Frankenstein. (I didn‘t tell her she meant the creature.)

I noticed some mixed reactions as I left the sold out nighttime showing of Del Toro's latest. Personally? I loved it. I think that if you have read the, & enjoyed, the book you will be pleased. I think that otherwise it might seem too slow. Although there are a few liberties here & there it is a very faithful version & it is undoubtedly one of Del Toro's most visually stunning works.

LeahBergen I‘ll probably like it then! 👍 5d

AmyG Thanks for the review. I will def catch this one. 4d
vivastory @Cathythoughts Hope you like it, Cathy. 4d
vivastory @Bookwomble Let me know your impressions when you see it. I've loved Del Toro since Devils Backbone and for me this is one of his best. A year or so ago I thought that we were going to have a second season of cabinet of curiosities. Turned out to be a dream. I was so bummed lol 4d
vivastory @AmyG 👍🖤 4d
Billypar I can't wait to see this. And I think The Devil's Backbone is one of his most slept-on films: one of the all-time ghost story greats imo. 4d
vivastory @Billypar Totally agree re: Devil's Backbone. 4d
Bookwomble @vivastory I really liked Cabinet of Curiosities, especially the Lovecraft adaptations (despite the liberties!). I'd guessed they weren't doing a second series after this time - so many good shows don't seem to get the traction they need 🫤 4d
vivastory @Bookwomble This is true. I read recently in Filterworld that around 70 percent of the NF content are series. That's why I'm so cautious of starting any of them. I mean Stranger Things is wrapping up a decade after it aired, but this is the new norm for streaming 4d
vivastory @Bookwomble I still need to watch season 4 of Stranger Things. I plan on doing so before season 5, but I read an article about the planned release dates for season 5 and it is wild. I have never seen anything like it 4d

ElizaMarie Do y'all think the creature would have spared Elizabeth if he didn't marry her? Victor is so selfish. I think he knew that the creature will kill her, and didn't do enough to protect her. Like maybe getting out of her life, it's not like he seemed super excited about getting married anyway. 5d
Bookwormjillk And yesterday I was so sure everything would be ok 😣 5d
dabbe You destroy the only thing the creature will love; then YOU get married and think you'll be all happy? THEN you let her go off to bed on her own? This is where one has to suspend their disbelief just a tad. 5d

Clare-Dragonfly Frankie basically confessed when he saw Henry! He‘s lucky the judge didn‘t take it as such and was willing to dig. 7d
Crinoline_Laphroaig What's with this guy always falling into a fever when something bad happens? Is this the male equivalent of a Regency heroine catching a cold and almost dying every time she gets caught in a bit of rain? 7d

Cathythoughts I‘ve only just started the book, good question. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but I see dark academia here …. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Huh… it‘s a stretch but not entirely wrong. Victor goes to university to do all his creating. 2w
ravenlee @MuddyPuddle @Litsi @Cathythoughts @Clare-Dragonfly I can see how you could make the argument, and I agree that there are elements of dark academia, but I think it‘s more adjacent than full-on DA. But while I know Frankenstein reasonably well, I‘m no expert on DA as a genre. 2w

KAO @TheAromaofBooks I take it back! The description of mysterious, misty paths in the mountains of Switzerland in this chapter seems ideal for the setting here! (My limited experiences in the Swiss Alps have mostly been glorious summer days where it was hard to let dark thoughts take up any space in one‘s mind in the face of such grandeur!) (edited) 3w
KAO I confess that I‘m flabbergasted that the creature has such fantastic thought processes and linguistic abilities!! All from the transplanted brain? Can‘t wait to learn more! 3w
See All 12 Comments
Bookwormjillk @KAO that‘s what I thought too! I didn‘t expect such an eloquent creature! 3w
dabbe The creature is highly intelligent and longs for companionship. Victor (the “father) shuns his creation JUST BECAUSE he is hideous on the outside. The creature then becomes hideous on the inside because of his abandonment by Victor. One just has to ask: which is more important to one's development as a human being? Nature or nurture? The easy answer is both are important, but the case for “nurture“ is about to be made by the creature in his tale. 3w
Sparklemn @dabbe Can‘t wait to hear the creature‘s sad tale. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - I guess any setting can be good for a bit of a horror story if it's stormy enough 😂 3w
dabbe @Sparklemn IKR? It's a doozy. 🖤 3w

KAO Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of this book, I‘ve been amazed that this takes place in Switzerland, of all places! So are these characters British transplants—and I missed that somehow? Or are they really speaking German, French, Italian, or Romansh (official languages of Switzerland), and we‘re just getting an English translation?? Just seems odd to me! 3w
KAO Okay—I had forgotten about the letters at the beginning! Robert Walton wrote to his family members from Russia and then later from his sea voyage about meeting this very sad fellow traveller (Victor, I assume), who spoke “in English, although with a foreign accent” and who later shared his tragic tale. I know he needed to be from a mysterious place, but Switzerland? 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Victor continues to be incredibly self-centered, insisting that he is the most tormented! 3w
ElizaMarie Poor Justine!!! 3w
Sparklemn Why didn‘t anyone at the trial ask how she could have had the physical strength to strangle a healthy young man with her bare hands? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3w
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Switzerland has a lot of dramatic settings, so it definitely helps 😂 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn - Right? And why said healthy young man would just... let her?? 3w
KAO @TheAromaofBooks I guess you‘re right! My own experiences there have been quite limited and significantly less dramatic in a “great setting for a horror story” sense! 😂 3w
TheAromaofBooks @KAO - Ooooo I would love to visit Switzerland! I am sure photographs do not do it justice! 3w
Seabreeze_Reader @Clare-Dragonfly Those were my thoughts, too! He claims to be wretched but then basically does nothing. By this point, Victor should have been trying to track down his creation, knowing what will likely happen again. 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @Sparklemn @TheAromaofBooks I thought he was a child… 3w
Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly oh, he may be a child! I‘m not sure which brother is which. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly - I think he was 7 or 8? And “tall for his age“ from Elizabeth's letter. I'm sure he could have been overpowered by a full-grown woman, but it still seems like it would have been a struggle, or that he would have had time to call out for help? 3w

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Did you know you can use the QR Code on the 19 Crimes wine bottles to view their Living Wine Labels? It's a small thing, but still fun to do. 4w
ElizaMarie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I had “known” but never tried it until now!!! Thanks!!! She screamed and hissed at me. 4w

Bookwormjillk Hello Flowers in the Attic how off putting. I know, a different time. 4w
JenlovesJT47 Hmm that last sentence in the chapter was a tad bit creepy, no? 😳 #obsessed 4w
Clare-Dragonfly Apparently Beaufort is the name to use for men who make terrible money choices. 4w

dabbe #mytwocents Two versions of FRANKENSTEIN were published: one in 1818, and one in 1831. The more popular one is the 1831 version. In that one, Elizabeth is “adopted“, but in the 1818 version, she was Alphonse's niece and Victor's real cousin. By 1831, Shelley had experienced the death of two children and her husband, which gave her a more pessimistic view on the story and made her more morally cautious. She also softened Victor's character. 4w
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe I wondered which version I had—Project Gutenberg wasn‘t clear! Now I know I have the 1831 text. What an interesting change. Thank you! 4w
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly I hoped the Elizabeth distinction would help! Not a lot of issues list the publication date! No idea why. 😍 4w
Bklover @dabbe- thanks for the info!🩵. I didn‘t know there were two versions. Victor is going to be an interesting character 🤨 4w
dabbe @Bklover YW, and boy is he! 🧡🤎💛 4w
Roary47 Well, I wasn‘t reading to much into it so just thought of him as an overprotective brother. 4w

I intensely dislike commuting before dawn, but it does get a little better when #HashtagBrigade is reading something a little bit creepy. 🧌

Seabreeze_Reader The writing is so elegant that it's making my other books sound simplistic. An #unfaircomparison and yet it's so. 4w

ElizaMarie @Bookwormjillk Ha yeah!!! I loved this quote! 4w
dabbe #mytwocents Having “The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner“ be one of Walton's favorite poems is crucial to his meeting of the “stranger.“ Just like the mariner, who has a tale to tell (a la Jacob Marley in A CHRISTMAS CAROL), the stranger also has a story to tell to ward off the ambition of Walton in his pursuit of seaworthy excellence. In one of the most famous frame tales every written, we're now going to go back to hear the tale. 4w
Bookwormjillk @dabbe thanks! Love these insights 🐦 (closest I could find to an albatross emoji) 4w
Crinoline_Laphroaig Struck by how desperate he was for a friend and how quickly he became enamored. 'I love him like a brother. ' 4w

I put together some of my best stuff from the unit I taught on FRANKENSTEIN (lots of fun clips and whatnot). If you'd like to share it with everyone, please do. I can't see everyone's name on the post above, so I can't do it.
