The Fellowship of the Ring
The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien
The first volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGSOne Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.A unique, wholly realized other world, evoked from deep in the well of Time, massively detailed, absorbingly entertaining, profound in meaning. First time reading this, and I gotta say I‘m a little upset no one‘s told me about Tom Bombadil before. He‘s the Chuck Norris of fantasy! He literally busts in, saves the day and is like, gotta bounce I have a hot chick waiting for me at home.

Oh my gosh, I love Sam!!! And Tolkien! I can't believe it took me this long to hop on the LOTR bandwagon. I liked Hobbit a lot -- especially because I got to reminisce with some of the characters in Fellowship -- but I definitely got into this one more. On to book two! (Or three, depending on how you're counting.) Hopefully I'll be caught up to #lotrchapteraday soon! 😁 #fellowshipoftolkien #classicschallenge2020 #mounttbr

Snowy Sundays are for reading and staring out the window.

I should probably hurry up and finish this book - #FellowshipofTolkien is already onto The Two Towers - but I've been lingering in Rivendell. There was so much about the beginning of this journey that I had forgotten, it's such a pleasure to revisit.

JazzFeathers True, eh? I think we tend to fall back on the movies, but the books are so much richer, especially in this first part. 2w

JazzFeathers @Literary_Siren We actually started with Unfinished Tales, which is a good choice after finishing LotR. I didn't remember that really there was this hard feeling between Aragorn and Boromir. I thought it was an invention of the films. Which l've always liked, by the way, that viril antagonism between two strong men.

I also find it fun that once again Tolkien hints at what was his first idea for the story, that Aragorn would go to Minas Tirith with Boromir.

I don't know how it is, but this time the poetry and melancholy of the chapters of Lothlorien is really touching my heart.

Overall, this book was a fun read! I dub the last chapter as "the one where we aren't sure why we spent so much time deciding who should go in the first place". I greatly enjoyed doing the #fellowshipoftolkien chapter a day readalong. My school semester has started, so I'll have to take a slower pace for the next book. #lotrchapteraday #readalongs2020

JazzFeathers Really? Instead l appreciated the doubts and indecisions. It's more realistic and feels less like 'So since this is the story, let's do this as soon as possible' 😉 3w
Kenyazero @JazzFeathers The doubts and indecision was important. It was the point of this chapter, I'd say! It was just a very long chapter. It made Bilbo's complains about not getting lunch feel more realistic too 😆 3w

L. G. Cullens It seems you are enjoying The Lord of the Rings :-) I had read The Hobbit in the 1940s, so in the late 1950s when The Lord of the Rings became available, I dived in and read it again in the 1990s. As the book grew on me over the years, I came to realize how much of an eco-fiction tale it was with a wealth on insight to be gleaned between the lines.

Take care

I had to look up this unfamiliar word fosse today. I tend to think of Lothlorien as a place of safety and seclusion, with sentinels and soldiers only near the borders. However, even here in the center of that protected place there are tiny hints to the possibility of and continual preparation for war. The city is surrounded by a trench and the Fellowship must travel around to the other side to enter it.

There‘s so much in this chapter as the Fellowship arrives in the forest of Lothlorien. I always appreciate the description of this beautiful land.

There‘s also a clear depiction of just how much distrust there is between the dwarves and the elves at this point as well. Finally, Aragorn steps continuously more into the role of a leader through this chapter.

#FellowshipofTolkien #LotRChapterADay
