Colorado Kid | Stephen King
68 posts | 112 read | 50 to read
Stephen King's bestselling unsolved mystery, THE COLORADO KID -- inspiration for the TV series HAVEN -- returns to bookstores for the first time in 10 years in an all-new illustrated edition. On an island off the coast of Maine, a man is found dead. There's no identification on the body. Only the dogged work of a pair of local newspapermen and a graduate student in forensics turns up any clues, and it's more than a year before the man is identified. And that's just the beginning of the mystery. Because the more they learn about the man and the baffling circumstances of his death, the less they understand. Was it an impossible crime? Or something stranger still...? No one but Stephen King could tell this story about the darkness at the heart of the unknown and our compulsion to investigate the unexplained. With echoes of Dashiell Hammett's THE MALTESE FALCON and the work of Graham Greene, one of the world's great storytellers presents a moving and surprising tale whose subject is nothing less than the nature of mystery itself...

I read most of this on a 2 hour plane ride. Very good mystery. I read this for a buddy read on Instagram and am looking forward to hearing everyone‘s theories.
Don‘t feel like I can say much more without giving away too much but I was entertained.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I haven‘t read it - but I enjoyed the tv show, Haven - which is a continuation of this story. 7mo

What an incredible, albeit all too brief book this was. I'm sure many will be put off by elements they feel are missing, but ultimately this book poses a fascinating mystery, expertly told by two of the best storytellers out there to one of the most likable audience surrogates I've come across in King's work. My only real gripe? I want so much more - of Dave, of Vince, and of Stephanie. Considering a good story shouldn't overstay its welcome, 5/5.

I've been meaning to read this one for ages, just finally got around to it, and I'm so glad I did!

I adored the characters in this one: I wish I could spend a day just talking to Vince and Dave. Even though this is a tale of mystery through and through, it has an inexplicable coziness and charm to it. And, as always, in King's delightful prose style. I just all around loved it!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I haven‘t read this but I enjoyed watching Haven - a show that picks up after the events of this book. Have you seen it? (edited) 14mo
SpeculativeFemale @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I did watch Haven and was fond of it! It probably gave me a certain perspective on the book (particularly about Dave and Vince), but only to a small degree. 14mo

Another short one by SK while I put new foil on my desk.
This is a #mystery all right. Two old guys running a weekly newspaper on one of the islands off the coast of Maine tell the story of the mysterious 'Colorado Kid' to their young intern. I loved the characters and the way this story was told.

Certainly a departure from King‘s usual style and a book that will frustrate many. Still, as someone who loves King and is still mad that Bob Iger forced David Lynch to reveal who killed Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks, this was right up my alley.

I loved this - I like when the story has no clean ending - the writing made the characters feel real (I do think a 90 something year old man might still refer to a young woman as “girl“ )- not all lives and deaths are understood - good read -

A dead man is found on a beach in Maine by two high school students 25 years ago. The mystery of the Colorado Kid is told by two older men who run the local newspaper to their young apprentice. I was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed this one. It‘s not just about the story of the Colorado Kid; it‘s about a place in Maine, the relationships between the newspaper people, and the reality of mysteries. #MountTBR

Of the 3 books King wrote for the Hard Case Crime series, this is by far the weakest. Liked the Maine setting & main characters, but this has the feel of a short story s t r e t c h e d into a novella. I was also annoyed by the older men referring to the younger intern as "dear" & "darlin'". Skip this & read Later or Joyland, King's other Hard Case Crime books. #fiction #mystery

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Two old timers from a small weekly newspaper kick around a 25-year-old cold case with their forensics intern - a young female with *gasp* breasts. 🙄 This drab conversation is the entire story. We hear all the progress and speculation on The Colorado Kid‘s mysterious death, which is interesting, but some might find the ending unsatisfying. I thought it worked fine. Bonus star awarded for that fab cover! #coverlove

While I appreciate what King did with this book, I can't say I personally liked it.
This is great storytelling, but what else can you expect of King. But there's a little to much left to the imagination for my taste, and while I realise that it is the whole point of the book. I can't say I'm a fan.

Reagan The actual case of the Somerton Man is so fascinating, this just did not do it for me, and I‘m a die hard King fan 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y

I love these Hard Case Crime editions. Having said that, Joyland was a struggle. Some fine writing but ‘slow burn‘ doesn‘t tell the half of it. By contrast, The Colorado Kid was a great read: beautifully paced and ample testament to King as a writer of versatility and charm. It‘s brilliant that he remains so prolific and I‘m looking forward to starting on The Institute next. I‘ve heard good things.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, I was okay with a mystery within the story that didn't have a wrapped up ending. The overall story had an ending with one of the main characters being asked to stay. It was an easy light read and I enjoyed the interactions with all the characters. This is a great Stephan King and I am glad it was my first.

Not your typical Stephan King novel except for the exceptional writing and storytelling.
In 1980 a body is found on the beach of small Maine Island. The man has no ID and nobody knows him. So where is he from and how did he get there, but most importantly how did he die?
2005 an intern at the newspaper on that small Maine island hears the story of ‘The Colorado Kid‘ from the 2 old timer news men that were there.
Excellent short read. 👍🏼

3rd book in O.W.L.s HP Magical Readathon-career=Metal Charmer-class-Defense Against Dark Arts-prompt-Grindylows=book set at the sea/coast. I have mix opinion b/c I liked the characters and their dynamic but not the end.I remembered a short story from Hemingway in that style, a conversation in one day about an event and you can know the characters. I liked that style. But the end of the mystery is inconclusive, open. It was from ok to so-so 3.3⭐️

DGRachel The book may have disappointed, but that cover is amazing. 🤣🤣🤣 5y
Gissy @DGRachel Yes! It is! It was mainly a cover buy. I'm just new in this Stephen King book world. 5y

This book has mixed reviews but I quite enjoyed it. Stephen King is a great writer as always, and I found this story intriguing and not predictable. The cover was unfortunately very misleading, as I was hoping for some 1950s noir-esque type of story, but instead we get a mystery with no solution. Some might hate it but I think it‘s worth reading, and can be read in a couple of hours. 4⭐️

I picked up this book in response to my love of the series Haven on Netflix (and all things Stephen King). But the book was merely a seed to grow a new story.

However, I loved the book for what it is - an atypical mystery. King himself said that people will either love it or hate it. Why? It‘s a reflection on story and storytelling. To that end, there is no answer given to the mystery. The fun is in the story, not the answer.

📷: Google Books

laurenlovesliterature I keep seeing this at the thrift store...but I keep padding it up. Should I get it??? 6y
LiterRohde @laurenlovesliterature If, like me, you are OK with not getting any answers, then yes. The fun of this book is enjoying the story of a mystery that raises questions but has no answers. I believe that‘s why King said there is no middle ground for most - they either love it or hate it. Also, it has no supernatural elements. It‘s all mystery. And it is a quick read. (edited) 6y

H is for Hard Case Crime.
A few years ago I had the joy of coming across a new King book, quietly released,in paperback only, sold in drugstores, and I remembered what it was like being a kid in a ... well, a bookstore. Not only did I get a King book out of it, but it led to rediscovering my love of pulp fiction. He followed up with another standalone treat, Joyland, & it was just as fun.
If you‘ve missed these, fix that.

@GarthRanzz

Sweettartlaura PS - if you like this genre, don‘t overlook 7y
GarthRanzz These were great books! I loved the pulp noire feel to them. Joyland was my favourite of the two. I need to look into some of the other Hard Case books. Like the ones Michael Crichton wrote. 7y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz I wound up with a monthly subscription to Hard Case Crime because of The Colorado Kid - they shipped 2 books a month for less than $10. I wound up giving it up cos they were just piling up. But I often wonder if they still do that. 7y
See All 18 Comments
GarthRanzz That might be worth looking in to. Definitely cheaper than Barnes and Noble! 7y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz it was real old-school, too - like, they sent an envelope for you to mail your check in... and this was around 2008/2010 - online payments/debit/credit cards/all that were well established. Made me wonder if it was run by an old guy chomping on a cigar, telling his spinster secretary Maude to hold his calls, in a run-down factory near the river, in some part of town the developers forgot. 7y
GarthRanzz LOL that‘s a hell of an image. Befitting the series. But it looks like they sold out. Changed publishers and it doesn‘t look like the new one kept the club. 7y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz Aww, man... no more Hard Case Crime? Well, if it was up to Maude & that new kid Cliff in Accounting to keep track of those checks, I guess it‘s no surprise 😕 7y
ShookBelf @Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz The best comment thread I've read in a while! 7y
Sweettartlaura @ShookBelf 👍🏻 I aim to please 😏 7y
GarthRanzz I‘m thinking Cliff and Maude embezzled the money and started a new publishing house called a Titan. They picked up the Hard Case series for a song and changed how you buy them. Online through a bigger crook; Amazon. 7y
Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz Yes... because Cliff is secretly Maude‘s son by... of course, the boss-man. He threw some money at her, told her to take care of it. They‘ve been plotting their revenge ever since. 7y
Bookladylinda @GarthRanzz Amazon = online crook! 👍🏾 7y
vivastory @Sweettartlaura @GarthRanzz This thread is killing me 😂😂 Now I have an overwhelming urge to read a noir 7y
Sweettartlaura @Bookladylinda @vivastory Thanks for enjoying! And yes, @vivastory go get you some noir - it‘s always fun ❤️ 7y

Sweettartlaura @vivastory I JUST listened to The Big Sleep - it was great! Scroll through my feed - pretty sure I reviewed it. And yes to Colorado Kid. Joyland isn‘t so much noir, but it is classic pulp. And for real, check out Queenpin by Megan Abbott - I loved it. She has another one in this vein, but I haven‘t gotten to it yet. Enjoy! 7y
vivastory I have Queenpin in my car. I might read that one. I love her work. 7y
Sweettartlaura @vivastory Do it - you might even finish it today. 7y

1. Dusting. Its necessary but tedious to me. There are so many nooks to remember!
2. Uh my dad makes a really good meatloaf!
3. Less! The week days I have more alone time.
4. Eliza and Her Monsters took me about 5 or 6 hours only. I‘m usually a slow reader.
5. The kids/young adult section
6. None. My library is upstairs 😫
7. YA crime/mystery is a new one
8. The Colorado Kid!!!!

Kaye Thanks for playing. Great that your dad makes good meat loaf. Now I need to make one. Sounds good. Also, I hate dusting. I could probably dust with a snow shovel. Usually I use my arm sleeve. Don‘t tell anybody. 😁 7y
