The Eighth Life
The Eighth Life: (for Brilka) The International Bestseller | Nino Haratischvili
132 posts | 38 read | 5 reading | 97 to read
That night Stasia took an oath, swearing to learn the recipe by heart and destroy the paper. And when she was lying in her bed again, recalling the taste with all her senses, she was sure that this secret recipe could heal wounds, avert catastrophes, and bring people happiness. But she was wrong. At the start of the twentieth century, on the edge of the Russian Empire, a family prospers. It owes its success to a delicious chocolate recipe, passed down the generations with great solemnity and caution. A caution which is justified: this is a recipe for ecstasy that carries a very bitter aftertaste Stasia learns it from her Georgian father and takes it north, following her new husband, Simon, to his posting at the centre of the Russian Revolution in St Petersburg. Stasias is only the first in a symphony of grand but all too often doomed romances that swirl from sweet to sour in this epic tale of the red century. Tumbling down the years, and across vast expanses of longing and loss, generation after generation of this compelling family hears echoes and sees reflections. Great characters and greater relationships come and go and come again; the world shakes, and shakes some more, and the reader rejoices to have found at last one of those glorious old books in which you can live and learn, be lost and found, and make indelible new friends.

I knew I was reading a new favorite by the first page, and I‘m so excited about her new novel coming out this fall.

An other contender is Excellent Women by Barbara Prym. This was my first Prym, but it won‘t be my last.

I'm always hesitant to claim a book as "one of the best I've ever read", as I've read so many great books, however this book truly deserves the title. What a phenomenal story this has been! A heartwarming and heartbreaking story of Soviet Georgia, from WW1 until the country breaks from the Soviet Union, focused on the impact on one family over many generations. I was absolutely hooked from the very first page. Brilliant!

Suet624 Congrats! That‘s a hefty hunk of paper! 3mo

suvata It is on my TBR but I haven‘t been brave enough to start it yet. 5mo
slategreyskies @suvata Amy ( @AmyG ) said that she broke it into lives, reading one or two at a time and then another book and then coming back to this one, so I‘m planning to do that too to make it more manageable. 5mo

Amiable How did you make out with “Kristin Lavransdattar”? Was that one a bail? 5mo
Suet624 What a chunkster! 5mo
slategreyskies @AmyG I‘m about 70 pages in so far. I‘m aiming for a minimum of 20 pages a day, so I‘ll finish it in under two months (I think). I‘m still on the first life and am really enjoying it so far! 5mo
slategreyskies @Amiable Kristin Lavransdatter is being set aside for now, not because I don‘t want to finish it, but because it wasn‘t what I wanted read, so I kept putting off reading. I figured that was a sign to set it down and come back to it in a bit. I‘m hoping to start it again in a few months, maybe even in the fall when the weather cools. I‘d still like to finish it this year. :) 5mo

The Two of Cups- our past and how we got into our current situation. I just finished the tagged book - a family saga (takes place over approx 100 years) and the story if the Joshi family…much if it having to do with their love choices and how that shaped the future of the family members.

#tarottakeover @ErinSueMreads

sarahbarnes I‘ve had this on my TBR for awhile - is it worth the length? 6mo
AmyG @sarahbarnes It was. But, because it‘s so long, I broke it up into lives. I‘d read a life or 2 and then read a couple other books. 6mo

Way to go, Amy! (Special props for tacking this chunkster in paper. My husband insists that my current 1,000+-page chunkster “doesn't really count“ because I'm reading it on my tablet. In his view, you get all the points for carrying this one around for several months. 🙂 )

Amiable @coffeewithbooks Join us! The hardest part of completing a chunkster is making the decision to pick it up and start it, IMO. Then it's just one page at a time until the end. Just like any other book. :) If the thought of an 800+ page book intimidates you, we are going to change things up a bit for 2023 with graduated tiers -- so you can start smaller and work your way up to the big guys! 6mo

#SharreadsReadathon book1
This was a chunskster!! 1000 plus pages, but once it draws you in, you'll be captured. From Stasia to her great granddaughter Niza the story of the generations is told in the setting of the Russian revolution forward. The family lives in Georgia where the family sells sweets using a secret chocolate recipe. As the years pass the son of the chocolatier becomes a high ranking official in the Soviet union. ⬇️

Crazeedi Niza is the narrator and in graphic prose tells the history of her family. This book is a translation and is very well done. Highly recommend!! 7mo

This novel is the definition of epic, covering hundreds of years of Georgian history through the lens of a single family. Cruelty, brutality, & much loss, but also love, duty, and a touch of magic. The prose was beautiful; kudos to the translator(s).

A 934-page sweeping historical romance on Georgia - the country. It basically covers the 20th century, opening around 1900 and closing around 2003, a pivotal and hopeful year for this place. I‘m not going to rave about this, as I was never carried away, but it‘s nicely written and I enjoyed it all, the vaguer first 2/3 in the Soviet shadow, and all the detail touches in the last 300 pages, especially as the Iron Curtain collapsed.

BarbaraBB Great review. I felt the same. Not raving, entertaining though 12mo
Graywacke Thanks. I remember you mentioning that. I think it‘s a book that can really click with the right reader, but it all depends on how they respond to that tone. But I didn‘t fully respond. ☺️ I also think it got better when Nika started on her own life. 12mo

Getting my early morning reading in - when i do most of my reading. 15 hours into this one I‘m not quite halfway through (roughly 1958, Soviet Georgia. It started around 1900). It‘s one of four long-ish books I‘ve been reading this month and won‘t finish…which is ok, but also a little strange.

slategreyskies I‘ve been considering reading this one. It looks good, but it‘s such a time commitment. 13mo
Graywacke @slategreyskies right, totally understand. It‘s a good fit if you want to zone out in that reading state of mind for a long time. 🙂 I‘m always happy to pick it up. (edited) 13mo
BarbaraBB Are you enjoying the book? I know many did but I was never really captured. 13mo
Graywacke @BarbaraBB I‘m enjoying. I like spending time with it and I like the overall structure so far. But, I haven‘t been carried away. (And I would like more unique to Georgia, and less sort of widely known “generic”, history and flavor.) 13mo

I'm on the home stretch of this book - just hit page 800, only 120 left to go! I am honestly just in awe of how much I love this story. You would think a generational story spanning a century could be a bit of a slog, but it's not! I have been entranced, captivated, and utterly engrossed with every single page. Takes place in Georgia (country not state) and has so much interesting history. I'm dreading the end because I don't want it to be over!

Cathythoughts This is all good to hear 👍🏻❤️… I have it & im often tempted.. but it‘s so long 13mo

Finished at last! The best thing about this book was its lush, colourful cover. I did not love the content. The writing is quite pacy so I read it to the end - all 934 pages of it - but now I feel slightly grubby. I could have used my reading time on something less... I don‘t know? What‘s the equivalent of ”click-baity” for books?

#Georgia

Cathythoughts Well , it‘s cover is certainly shown off beautifully in your picture 💫… I have it on my shelf… 14mo
Liz_M I hadn't thought of it as click-baity, but I get what you're saying. I just found it tiresome that none of the family members had an ordinary life -- every single one suffered some sort of unspeakable tragedy. 14mo

This book is amazing! It weaves over 100 years of Georgian history through the lives one extended family. It's full of drama and horrors, of emotions and activism. It is a book that gives you space to learn, to grieve, to reflect and to cry - not tears of sentimentality but ones triggered by human pain. It's full of human energy and Georgian landscapes. It has the smell of peaches and the waft of vodka.. I loved it!

Thought whilst I‘m not leaving the house (so no backpack and bicycle) it was a good time to tackle all 930 pages of this #chunkster !

Heideschrampf Enjoy! I absolutely adored this one 📚❤️ 2y
TrishB I‘ll keep an eye out for your review 👍🏻 2y
Hooked_on_books It‘s a beast! I enjoyed it, but it‘s so devastating in places that I had to break it up into smaller bits and read it slowly. 2y

Well into this 20th century novel of Georgia, the country. I read with my atlas handy. Lengthy, instructive, absorbing. More novels about this part of the world please! #atlasreads #20thcenturysoviethistory #discoverGeorgia #longreads #toughlives

I‘m diving into this chunky tome (977 pages). Just started the preface and it seems like it‘s going to be a delightful book. I love a good, long generational story. And while I was reading Patsy in written format, it dawned on me that the audio may be exceptional, given the main character is Jamaican & some dialogue is written in patois. Sure enough -that was a good decision. Both are chunky books so I‘m hoping to get through them faster this way.

charl08 I'm coming up to the last 200 pages. Worth the time! 2y

charl08 @BarbaraBB It has taken me a while to get into, but yes! Trying to motivate myself with signs of progress as it is such a chunkster... 2y
BarbaraBB It is and it drags at times but overall I thought it to be an easy, engaging read. 2y

This book was epic in every sense. It spanned generations of a Georgian family, the rise and fall of the USSR, unforgettable characters, tragic love affairs, and a magical chocolate recipe. At 934 pages, it was also epic in length, but I didn‘t find any of those pages excessive or diversionary. This book was a big investment, but completely worth it. 5⭐️

monalyisha One of my reading resolutions is to read at least one big, long book this year! I already have a few titles on the docket, but I may add this. Great review! It sounds fascinating! Maybe I‘ll rekindle a love of Big Books & end up reading more than one! 2y
Redwritinghood @monalyisha I started it at the end of June and just took my time. If a book is interesting enough, I love to have a big book to just sink into. I hope you like this one if you get around to it. 2y
BiblioLitten After reading this I have a feeling I will be able to manage a fast-paced big book. 2y
Redwritinghood @BiblioLitten I have that one my Kindle. Need to get to it too. 2y
