Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year
Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year: A little book of festive joy | Beth Kempton
8 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
This is a book about Christmas. But it's also a book about belonging, connection, self-care, joy and ordinary magic. Calm Christmas and a Happy New Year offers inspiration for a new kind of holiday season - one where you radiate calm and cultivate delight. Spanning late November to early January, Calm Christmas embraces the festive build-up, the celebrations and the turn of the year in a holistic, nurturing way. Beth Kempton will whisk you away from the frenetic energy of the high street and invite you to come sit awhile by the fire, pausing to explore what a more mindful festive season could mean for you. Full of personal stories, tips and advice for slowing down, staying calm and connecting with others, it offers a welcome retreat from the pressure to create 'the perfect Christmas'. At its heart Calm Christmas is about a book about wellbeing in winter, which will encourage you to use this time of natural hibernation to germinate new dreams and nurture a beautiful life in the year ahead. Instead of entering January exhausted, further in debt, and already regretting broken resolutions, you will begin the New Year with precious memories, feeling rested, rejuvenated and inspired. This atmospheric book will lead you through the darkness of winter, back to the enchantment of an authentic and meaningful Christmas and New Year.

I think this is probably a good read if you're overwhelmed each year by Christmas, but since the Hubs and I don't have kids and usually spend Christmas on our own or with friends, a lot of advice didn't serve me. But it did really make me think about gift giving and how I want to tackle future Christmases.

MidnightBookGirl Also I really loved the idea of mindful present wrapping and finding the joy/zen/art of it instead of the usual panicked ripping of paper and bows. 5mo

Hygge is very much a mindset rather than a lifestyle. It's all about comfort, not just physical but also emotional and psychological comfort. Focus on what brings you comfort in life, the people you spend time with, fave activities, food & drink.
Most importantly, do what you gotta do to take care of yourself. Own your mood and embrace it for what it is x

Yuki_Onna This is so beautiful... 1y

My last lists for 2022. 😍❄️🥂🎄 I've drawn up 3, as I'm planning on lots of mood reading for the #midwintersolace and #winterreadathon events.
List 1 - Anthologies for all those busy days
List 2 - Fiction to bring warmth, comfort and joy
* List 3 - Non-fiction to keep the brain ticking over and curiosity

I've included all remaining challenge books to round up 2022

A delightful book filled with musings, suggestions, love and light for the holiday season. I picked up a few great ideas to make the season less harried and more meaningful. #wintergames #mistletoemaniacs @Clwojick @StayCurious

I enjoyed the parts that celebrated and romanticised Christmas and winter. Beth Kempton is great at describing simple things in beautiful ways.

I less liked the ‘self help‘ parts which came across quite privileged and ‘just be less stressed‘. As a person with chronic pain, being told that enjoying Christmas will be easier for me if I journal and do yoga every morning doesn‘t help a lot when my condition makes those specific things very painful.

Emilymdxn The story of the man whose house and possessions burned to the ground and that helped him appreciate family and non material things also rubbed me the wrong way. Like what proportion of people are in a position to be 100% financially okay and grateful for their relationships after losing their home and all their possessions?? I‘d be completely ruined and I probably wouldn‘t be thinking about the magic of Christmas? 2y
bthegood Thank you for the honest review - sometimes I think like you do - the self help part is easy if you are in a position to do those things - I read the book Lean In years ago and realized the only women who could “lean in“ like that at work and take charge would be women already in positions of power and/or privilege - 😊 2y

🌲All this snow has me with Christmas on the brain. One of my favorite bookstagrammers has Calm Christmas in her pile of TBR. Once I read the premise, loving the idea of daily readings from late November thru January, I immediately bought a copy. Who doesn‘t love the notion of a calm Christmas or calm season in life for those that celebrate differently or not at all?

Anyone else reading this during the holiday season?

mklong Sounds great! I may have to get a copy. 4y
Sace I don't celebrate Christmas but this still intrigues me. I like the concept. 4y
Jess_Read_This @Sace I should edit my comment bc after I posted, I‘ve been thinking about those that don‘t celebrate or celebrate differently. I was intrigued with the idea of a calm season rather than the holiday aspect primarily too. When my copy comes, I‘ll let you know what the author seems to be focusing on? 4y

Jess_Read_This @Sace I hope the book won‘t end up feeling exclusionary for those that don‘t celebrate, you know? 4y
Sace @Jess_Read_This please do! And thanks! 4y
Jess_Read_This @mklong Let me know if you do. I‘d love to compare notes with others reading it. 4y
TheBookHippie This intrigues me as well. 4y
Jess_Read_This @TheBookHippie I‘m really looking forward to this one. I think I‘m entering a life season where I‘ve been reflecting on quality over quantity in terms of time, experiences, and interactions. I‘m hoping this book brings some new ideas how to achieve that during the holiday season. 4y
TheBookHippie @Jess_Read_This I have always thought the holidays too stressful 🤣we switched up things about 5 years ago. Best thing I ever did. New traditions thoughtful expressions instead of the norms . 4y
Jess_Read_This @TheBookHippie I love hearing that. Do you mind sharing what you switched up to make it so much more thoughtful and better than the norms which were stressful? 4y
TheBookHippie @Jess_Read_This We do Christmas Poems to each other and attach a small gift. All year we write three things of gratitude in a journal daily &read them to each other on New Year‘s Eve. We get a gift and write a note why we bought the gift. Christmas Eve We do Jolabokaflod everyone gets a box of books or non readers get movies and we have cocoa (books etc are mostly from thrift stores) We have a huge brunch on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we graze. 4y
TheBookHippie We do not have people over or leave other than my own kids and grandson December 24-25 no phones either 4y
TheBookHippie The money we would spend as former days we donate this year we are buying a dollhouse for one of my classrooms 4y
Jess_Read_This @TheBookHippie I love your traditions. Absolutely love them. I spoke to my sister yesterday to start to see what the family might think if I bring up adopting a family or charity for Christmas rather than do presents. She loved the idea. Thank you for sharing your traditions with me- I want to incorporate Jolabokalod into our traditions this year too. 4y
TheBookHippie @Jess_Read_This it‘s so much better to do meaningful and give back it‘s been wonderful. 4y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this book. I've almost ordered. 4y
