Bookshop (Revised) | Penelope Fitzgerald

Short-listed for the Booker Prize A beautiful book, a perfect little gem. BBC "Kaleidoscope" A marvelously piercing fiction. "Times Literary Supplement" In 1959 Florence Green, a kindhearted widow with a small inheritance, risks everything to open a bookshop the only bookshop in the seaside town of Hardborough. By making a success of a business so impractical, she invites the hostility of the town's less prosperous shopkeepers. By daring to enlarge her neighbors lives, she crosses Mrs. Gamart, the local arts doyenne. Florence s warehouse leaks, her cellar seeps, and the shop is apparently haunted. Only too late does she begin to suspect the truth: a town that lacks a bookshop isn t always a town that wants one. This new edition features an introduction by David Nicholls, author of "One Day," along with new cover art."

My 12th independent bookstore visit on the #HTXBookCrawl24 was to Candescent Books, which is a pop-up bookstore that was set-up at Native Coffee in downtown Houston. The owner not only has a good amount of popular books available, but also homemade candles. The historical fiction candle was my favorite, even though that is not my favorite book genre. This a great spot to hang with friends or just sit with a good book.

RedxoHearts I'm jealous! I just heard of this but rarely get over towards Houston. It would be a fun time to go visit them all though 6mo
Morr_Books @RedxoHearts This is the first time that Houston is doing this, so I got overly excited. These bookstores spanned more than 100 miles, so I did a lot of driving this month but loved it! 6mo

Undone by seasonal allergies. The day has had a horizontal viewpoint. I filled the between sneezes and itchy moments with this book. It‘s a slim novel telling a quiet story that felt right for a Sunday afternoon. Never once did I feel the urge to assume a vertical viewpoint until close to the end when I realized that sometimes unkind schemes result in a permanent alteration to sweet hopes and dreams, unlikeable people often remain unlikeable,👇🏽

Nute good folks and good intentions are easily pushed into obscurity by the trampling of the powerful and the privileges of money-class-caste…all of that shall surely define our ruin and vanquishing. Yet, still I was pulling for Florence…for goodness sake, she owns a bookstore. As readers we always pull for the keeper of books, right?👇🏽 (edited) 3y
Nute I was pulling for her bookshop in a town where not many desired to read & few had leisure time past what is required to survive. How brave to introduce Lolita to that citizenry! I was hoping that there would be a miraculous shifting of power and voice. Maybe there was…Florence hopefully left an indelible impression on someone…reading can raise you up, literature can carry you far from where you physically are & give intelligence bumper points.👇🏽 (edited) 3y
Nute Didn‘t do too much for putting despicable people in their place so unfortunately the story leaves you feeling a bit sad. Maybe that‘s the rub though, sometimes shifty folks get away with their shifty behaviours. I didn‘t mind this story for it‘s intended purposes. Always nice to read about a bookstore, even a short lived one so I still say Recommended. (edited) 3y

This wasn‘t what I expected, but I really enjoyed it. It was far less bookish than I anticipated, instead focusing on the petty grudges of an English village—with a bookshop as the stage for playing out those social machinations. It‘s a bit quirky, a bit funny, a bit sweet, a bit sad. And it‘s thoroughly British—so much is in what‘s not being said. Recommended, with the caveat that it‘s not a cozy bookish read—it‘s much sadder & sharper than that.

This isn‘t a simple “feel good book” as much as we might wish for a bookish escape novel right now.
I should have known as my previous experience of Fitzgerald was biting and incisive character portrayals. In this novella, as beautifully as Fitzgerald paints the bookshop and its eccentric owner, she removes our rose coloured glasses - there is small town villainy afoot.
I love her writing and I must read more of it - this was just a tiny taste.

Tanisha_A Ooh, haven't read the book but watched the movie featuring Emily Mortimer. I liked it a whole lot, and she is a great actress imo. Like you said, it's not just about a person who loves to read, but so many other complications faced in a town which is yet to open itself to the world. 5y
Tanisha_A And think i would love to read Fitzgerald, too. 🙂 5y

This is a forgettable little book of manners about a middle aged lady who wants to run a bookshop in a frankly unsuitable location. I was trying to come up with a witty one liner about damp squibs and damp bookshops, but couldn't. For a lover of bookshops this novel was a disappointment.

As I am about to go to London, I wanted to ask if anyone of you can recommend good English books to me? Which are also written in slightly simpler English. 😬 prefers thriller, but I'm open for everything. ☺️

Sarah83 @scripturient @julesG it is your turn. 😊 7y
julesG @Sarah83 Thanks! Well, what I used to recommend to my students (Volkshochschulkurse) was children's books. Yes, sounds boring. I know. But thrillers can go in all directions. You need to understand language, specific language (medicine, police, law,...), culture, etc. Children's books offer simpler language and hence more satisfaction. And there are always the cozy mysteries by MC Beaton. I'm tagging a few in the next comments. MC Beaton 7y
